Everything You Need to Know About Apocalypse Before His X-Men Movie Debut

by Rob Bricken

Apocalypse is weird. He’s arguably the X-Men’s most powerful foe, but he’s not the most famous; he has a generic name, hard-to-defined powers, and his motives change a lot. And now he’s also going to be the big bad of the next X-Men film! Here’s a helpful primer before Apocalypse (the movie and the character) arrive this May.

Cheetos

Cheetos. Not even once.

Those little balls of fried corn fluff covered in orange powder are so addictive, you’ll never know what hit you until it’s too late. Then you’ll need an intervention from those who love you, and if you've truly hit rock bottom, you might be ready for a serious stint in rehab. And although you may recover, you’ll never be the same. Because you demanded it… Deadpool!

Deadpool’s enduring popularity baffles and gratifies. Without a movie or a TV show to raise his profile, just how has Deadpool become so popular? There’s really no good answer other than that he’s built a fan base the “old fashioned” way: gradually, and by word of mouth.

Anticipation for Deadpool is high. There’s still resistance to the character among a certain strain of old-school comics fans, but those readers appear to be outnumbered. Fox has made the bold decision to allow the movie to go forward with an R rating, confirming that the character’s mega-violence will not be compromised. In the context of a market where superhero media of all types is micromanaged by multi-billion dollar conglomerates, Deadpool is a genuine anomaly. Deadpool can legitimately boast of being a product of popular demand: this movie literally wouldn’t exist if lots of people didn’t like him—really, really like him, as Sally Field might say.

VOTD: Are These the 10 Best Closing Shots of All Time?

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Love these.

This was excellent.

Best Closing Shots

Just last month, we called your attention to a countdown of what CineFix believed were the Top 10 Opening Shots of All Time. But every movie that starts with an iconic shot must also come to an end, and now we have a list of what CineFix thinks are the Top 10 Closing Shots of All Time. The closing shot of any film can be even more important than the opening shot as it’s the last impression the film gives you before you leave the theater. So let’s see if you agree with these picks for the best closing shots in cinema.

Here’s the video countdown for the Top 10 Closing Shots of All Time from CineFix:

If you happen to be somewhere you can’t watch the video, here’s the list of movies:

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
  • A Serious Man (2009)
  • The Piano (1993)
  • Gangs of New York (2002)
  • Fight Club (1999)
  • Inception (2010)
  • The Searchers (1956)
  • Stalker (1979)
  • The 400 Blows (1959)
  • Casablanca (1942)

Fight Club and Inception are no-brainers when it comes to the best closing shots in more recent memory. And it’s no coincidence that The Searchers ended up on this list after also being on the list for the Top 10 Opening Shots of All Time, mostly because the opening and closing shots mirror each other, basically as bookends.

One of the more surprising picks is Gangs of New York, especially since it’s not exactly Martin Scorsese’s best movie. But the time lapse of New York with the graveyard in the foreground is quite a powerful shot, showing the change not just in the city’s landscape, but in its personality when compared to the gritty history we just saw unfold in the film.

As for the top pick, it’s hard to argue with an iconic shot as the one that ends Casablanca. That’s just pure film history right there.

‘Green Room’ Red Band Trailer: This is the Punks Versus Neo-Nazis Thriller You’re Looking For

by Jacob Hall
Corey

One of the movies I am most excited for this year.

green room trailer

A24 is on a roll. A day after they release a new trailer for The Witch, an early frontrunner for one of the best films of 2016, they go ahead and reveal the first full trailer for Green Roomanother early frontrunner for one of the year’s top films. After making the festival rounds for much of last year, the latest film from director Jeremy Saulnier is a few months away from a theatrical release and this is something you’re going to want to see as soon as possible – you’ll kick yourself when it becomes one of your favorite movies if you wait too long to see it.

You can watch the new Green Room trailer below.

Green Room is built on an intimate, razor sharp premise: a struggling punk band agrees to take a gig at an isolated venue, learning too late that the operation is a cog in the local white supremacist machine. When they witness a murder, these young and thoroughly incompetent musicians lock themselves in the green room and participate in a brutal, bloody siege with deadly killers who will casually see them dead to hide the evidence. Oh, and Patrick Stewart (yes, that Patrick Stewart) is terrifying and magnificent as the skinhead lead villain of the film.

And while this may be a red band trailer, it’s worth noting that this preview really doesn’t even touch on how nasty this movie really gets. This is not an experience for the squeamish or the easily disturbed. Which means you really should drag your squeamish and easily disturbed friends to go see it.

Although Stewart grabs all of the headlines for his against-type casting, the ensemble is wonderful all-around, with Anton Yelchin doing fine work as the throughly outmatched protagonist and Imogen Poots solidifying herself as an actress to watch as a scene-stealing mystery woman. However, it’s Saulnier regular Macon Blair who gets the real standout performance, once again proving himself to be one of the most promising and unheralded actors out there right now.

Speaking of “promising and unheralded,” Green Room is Jeremy Saulnier’s third feature film and it’s about time we recognize that he’s the real deal. His Murder Party is a hilarious, black comedic delight and Blue Ruin is one of the most lean and mean and emotionally engaging thrillers in recent years. Green Room falls about halfway between the two of them: it’s a crowd-pleasing splatter flick and a morally complex thriller that forces you to confront its violence and the impact is has on its wide range of characters. Why Saulnier isn’t turning down major Hollywood gigs left and right is a mystery.

Here’s the official synopsis:

GREEN ROOM is a brilliantly crafted and wickedly fun horror-thriller starring Patrick Stewart as a diabolical club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band. Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon.  What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see.  Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club’s depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise.  But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown. Intense, emotional, and ingeniously twisted, Green Room is genre filmmaking at its best and most original. Saulnier continues to build his reputation as one of the most exciting and distinctive directors working today, with a movie that’s completely different from his previous, highly acclaimed Blue Ruin, but which is just as risk-taking and even more full of twists. The entire cast deliver first-rate performances, but Patrick Stewart gives a transformative and brilliantly  devious turn as Darcy-elegant yet lethal, droll yet terrifying, Stewart makes the film simply unforgettable.

Green Room opens in limited release on April 15, 2016 before going wide on April 29, 2016.

Great Job, Internet!: The Frinkiac search engine can find screencaps for that Simpsons quote

by Joe Blevins
Corey

Good.
Lord.

AMAZING

In a flashback from the classic “Much Apu About Nothing” episode of The Simpsons, adenoidal genius Professor John Frink describes the awesome, UNIVAC-style computer he has created: “Sure, the Frinkiac 7 looks impressive–Don’t touch it!–But I predict that within 100 years, computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive only the five richest kings in Europe will own them.” What the professor could not have predicted is that, in 2016, there would be a Frinkiac search engine capable of matching Simpsons quotes with the appropriate screencaps, drawing from the first 15 seasons of the long-running animated series. Just type in, let’s say, “oyster Lucy” or “cider town” and let the Frinkiac do its thing.

For anyone wondering how this miracle of technology came about, Brian Barrett has a nice write-up about the Frinkiac over at Wired, and one of the search ...

These Pics Prove Some People Are Geniuses When They're Drunk

by Zeon Santos

There are some aspects of the human mind that will forever remain a mystery, and a few of those aspects pertain to how our brains perform when we're intoxicated.

(Image Link)

Someone who's sharp as a razor when sober may fall apart after only a few drinks, becoming a mindless, drooling husk of a human, and yet sometimes people who are normally a bit mindless become MacGyver when they're drunk.

These drunk geniuses know every hungover person needs food badly, every toilet needs arm rests and that bicycle of theirs could really use a handy pizza slice holder, for those long rides home from the bar.

The 100 Jokes That Shaped Modern Comedy

by Miss Cellania
Corey

This will take a while, but is so good.

Vulture has a mega-post with a timeline of comedy history. The title is a bit hyperbolic, because the 100 jokes are limited to the United States in the last 110 years. However, it does include visual gags, one-liners, full skits, movie scenes, standup, long-running jokes, and more, with commentary. There are tons of classics that will make you laugh no matter how many times you’ve heard them, and others you may vaguely remember and will be glad to see again.

“When I’m Good I’m Very Good … But When I’m Bad, I’m Better” -Mae West, 1933

“I was in love with a beautiful blonde once, dear. She drove me to drink. That's the one thing I’m so indebted to her for.” -W.C. Fields, 1941

“Welcome to the Academy Awards, or, as it’s known at my house, Passover.” -Bob Hope, 1968

“Dave’s not here.” -Tommy Chong, 1971

“These go to 11.” -Christopher Guest, 1984

There are a lot of videos. You can read through them in order, or use the timeline to jump around and find your favorites. Some are NSFW, but the description should indicate the subject before you play a sound clip or video. This list could keep you busy for days.

Bo & Matthew Sneak into a Movie Theatre

Two best friends fulfill “a lifelong dream” of sneaking into a movie theater as one large person. It’s not about saving the money on the ticket; it’s to see if they can get away with it. Of course they did. Movie theater employees aren’t paid enough to risk a confrontation, or even care.

Deadpool Releases Infographic; Ryan Reynolds Stars In Super Bowl Commercial

Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds seem to have a handle on this internet thing. Today’s entries in their continued campaign to rule online include a helpful infographic and a Hyundai commercial.

First up is that recently released infographic with Deadpool helpfully separating the heroes from the douchebags:

deadpoolgraphicThere might something else going on with this image, as well. But that’s hardly a concern of the film’s star, who also features in this newly released Hyundai ad. It will air during the Superbowl and one imagines many people — including Reynolds himself — wish to live in the world it illustrates … one with collision-prevention breaking.
