Grandmaster Maurice Ashley vs. Trash Talker

by Miss Cellania

Maybe you’ve seen the chess players at Washington Square Park in New York. They play each other for grins and crush out-of-towners quickly. Here, a chess hustler named Wilson is challenged to a game by a stranger, or at least a guy he doesn’t recognize. It’s chess grandmaster Maurice Ashley. Wilson doesn’t know what he’s in for, but he puts up a good fight anyway.

(YouTube link)

Ashley barely looks at the board as they zip through a speed chess game, but he still knows exactly where every piece is supposed to be at any minute, which causes some controversy before the game is over. It’s a satisfying match, even if you can’t follow it. This video is a segment from the HLN TV show The Tim Ferriss Experiment. -via Uproxx

‘Baby Driver’ Filming Now: Check Out Behind-the-Scenes Shots From Edgar Wright’s Latest

by Jack Giroux

baby driver filming

Good news: Edgar Wright has begun filming his newest picture, Baby Driver. Shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, began this week, and Wright is already sharing behind-the-scenes pics from his rock-and-roll car chase film. There aren’t any shots of the excellent cast, but posting a few shots from the set isn’t a bad way to celebrate the start of principal photography. Check out Wright’s photos below.

Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Lily James (CinderellaJon Hamm (Mad Men), and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards). Wright’s frequent collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost aren’t a part of the cast, at least not in roles that we know of. We haven’t heard much about Wright’s original project, but about a year ago we got our first synopsis:

Plot follows a talented, young getaway driver (Elgort) who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss, he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

We’ve since learned a little bit more about the film. Jamie Foxx plays the crime boss, and he forces the young driver into that impossible heist. James plays the love interest, while Hamm stars as one of the villains, a member of the gang of bank robbers. There’s no word on who Spacey is playing.

Edgar Wright shared the image of the clapperboard above on his Twitter, but the director posted more behind-the-scenes images over on his Instagram account. Since music plays a big part of the film, as is usually the case with Wright’s work, the first batch of photos are set in Atlanta’s own Criminal Records. For starters, Wright tipped his cap to David Bowie:

A photo posted by Edgar Wright (@edgar_wright) on

Wright and cinematographer Bill Pope (The Matrix) first collaborated on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, before they worked together again on The World’s End. Thankfully, Wright and Pope are back at it, because the DP is shooting Baby Driver.

The Return of ‘Ghostbusters’ Ecto Cooler Seemingly Confirmed with a New Can

by Ethan Anderton

Ecto Cooler Coming Back

Last November, we got word that Coca-Cola had re-registered the trademark for Ecto-Cooler, the Ghostbusters themed juice drink that was popular in the 80s and ’90s. There was no guarantee that the soft drink company would bring back the flavor that Ghostbusters fans have wanted back on shelves for years, but with a new Ghostbutsters movie on the way this summer, a nostalgic cash grab just made sense.

Now we seem to have confirmation of the drink’s impending return, as a sample can has made its way online in an eBay auction. And if you’re skeptical that it might be a fake, there’s a few reasons that it seems to be legitimate. Find out more about Ecto Cooler coming back tomorrow.

Here are a couple images of the Ecto Cooler can that’s up for sale on eBay now (via Distractify):

ghostbusters-ectocooler-newcan1 ghostbusters-ectocooler-newcan2

/Film reader @PoLISHPHENoM first sent us this image before we got a little more information on the listing, which seems to be a test can that hasn’t been filled with juice or anything. Making it seem legitimate is the updated nutritional facts chart to account for the can size, which has a little more juice that the usual juice box from back in the day. Plus, the top of the can saying “Ghostbusters: Only in Theaters” adds some more credence to it as well.

For all the purists out there who might be upset that we won’t be getting any juice box versions of Ecto Cooler, it seems like we’ll be getting those back too. A test box of Ecto Cooler has been revealed over at the Resurrect Ecto Cooler Facebook page, though it doesn’t have any box art or anything like that.

Speaking of which, the major difference between the new Ecto Cooler and the old one seems to be a lack of Slimer. And since we don’t really know if the green ghost will be in the movie or not, and he hasn’t been in a movie or cartoon series, not including him in the artwork kinda makes sense.

Coming Distractions: The trailer for Showtime’s Andrew Dice Clay show listlessly shrugs its way into existence

by William Hughes
Corey

I'll always give Dice a chance.

Hickory Dickory Dock! What do you do when you used to be one of the world’s biggest comedians, but are now a barely remembered walking punchline with all the edge of a sundae left out in the sun?

Answer: Go on Showtime as a stereotypical bumbling dad figure, according to the first trailer for Dice, the premium network’s attempt to give Andrew Dice Clay the comeback that pretty much no one was demanding. Starring Clay in the taxing role of a washed-up Las Vegas performer, the trailer sizzles with all the comedic heat and immediacy of a day-old steak resting on a poorly tended buffet (or a Criss Angel cameo in 2016, to give an example from the show). Natasha Leggero seems to be doing her best to inject the material with some energy, but there’s only so much anyone can do with a bunch of half-hearted ...

Great Job, Internet!: Adam Sandler’s “Ode To My Car” actually benefited from censorship

by Joe Blevins
Corey

Love this song.

It may seem difficult to believe from this vantage point, but Adam Sandler was not always a pariah. Two decades ago, when the actor and comedian released the second of his five albums, the public actually seemed interested in what this goofy 29-year-old Brooklynite had to say. When What The Hell Happened To Me? appeared on store shelves on February 13, 1996, Sandler was pretty much at the peak of his public acceptability as a multimedia star. He’d gotten the boot from Saturday Night Live the previous year and would nurse a grudge against the show for decades, finally relenting in time for the show’s 40th anniversary. But his movie career was in full swing by then, with Billy Madison already in the rearview mirror and Happy Gilmore on the horizon. The music business was a little kinder to comedy albums back then, too, and What The Hell ...

Newswire: Bill Murray allegedly smashes some cell phones, is still cool about it

by Sam Barsanti
Corey

Interesting...

Everybody loves a good Bill Murray story because everybody has a good Bill Murray story. They usually happen to a friend of a friend of a friend, involve the comedy legend popping up unexpectedly and doing something hilarious, and then they end with Murray reminding the lucky witnesses that no one will ever believe them when they tell their Bill Murray story. Maybe he crashed your relative’s wedding reception and danced with everybody? Maybe your old roommate was walking down the street in Chicago when Bill Murray ran up and started tickling him? Maybe you went to his house after the zombie apocalypse and accidentally shot him? Whatever the story, the great thing about them is that they all ride this fine line between being wacky and being realistic. In the end, we choose to believe them because we love Bill Murray, and those stories make the world seem ...

Hear This: “I Can Be Afraid Of Anything” is maximalist rock music for the ages

by David Anthony
Corey

Love this song.

In Hear This, The A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well. This week, in honor of The Grammys, we’re stumping for songs we think should have been nominated for “Song Of The Year.”

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, “I Can Be Afraid Of Anything” (2015)

In this year’s Grammys category for “Song Of The Year” the clear frontrunner—and should be winner—is Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” a track so important that putting anything else alongside it only heightens its profundity. Even if hadn’t become a rallying cry for the “Black Lives Matter” movement, it’s the kind of track that’s so powerful it makes anything seem utterly inconsequential in comparison. But, for the sake of argument, there’s one band that feels as impactful as “Alright,” and that’s The World ...

Newswire: CBS just had a record-breaking week for all those shows you never watch

by William Hughes
Corey

Exactly. Short of the news shows I have to watch in the AM for work and Big Bang (on DVD a year later) I don't watch any of these shows and have no interest.

For the first time in more than a decade, a single network had all 10 of the highest-rated programs on TV last week. And, proving once and for all that you and everyone you know are completely, irreversibly out of touch with the wider TV-watching public, that network was somehow CBS.

“Well, sure, Big Bang Theory,” you mumble to yourself, confident that you have a weak but stable grasp on the actual shape of the world. But you’ve already forgotten the network’s top-rated show, NCIS, which has been on the air for 13 years of uninterrupted unsub-hunting, and which pulled in almost 17 million viewers last Tuesday. That’s followed by Big Bang, which laugh-tracked its way to 16.2, and the Republican debates, broadcast from the alternate universe where Donald Trump is considered a credible frontrunner for the leadership of the free world.

After that, there are ...

Deadpool Artist Reilly Brown’s Newborn Baby Has Lost Everything In A Fire. Can You Help?

by Rich Johnston

Last week Sunday, comic book creator Reilly Brown and his partner were gifted with a happy baby boy.

The next Saturday, their block in Hoboken caught on fire, they left for Reilly’s grandmother’s house and watched their home, as it filled with smoke, on the news.

No one died, it seems everyone is safe. But they returned to this.

And this.

And this.

12717269_10153309383502233_5836048610249613948_n

They have suffered considerable damage from smoke and water, all their belongings were saturated in smoke, and as well as books and clothes, they have had to throw out all their new baby things.

Reilly writes,

Insurance will help us out a bit, but not enough to cover everything that needs to be cleaned, everything that needs to be replaced, as well as the moving expenses. I’m confident that we’ll figure something out one way or the other, but for the people who have asked how they can help, I’ll humbly direct you toward my art dealer’s site, www.AnthonysComicBookArt.com/artistgalleryroom.asp… – a few extra sales there could go a long way.

You can also book commissions from Reilly Brown here for upcoming shows, and pay in advance.

And he will be selling his convention sketchbooks digitally, right here, for whatever price you are willing to pay.

I think you should be willing to pay a decent amount.

Newswire: R.I.P. Police Academy and Punky Brewster star George Gaynes

by William Hughes

Variety is reporting that George Gaynes, an actor best known for his roles as stern-but-loving father figure Henry on Punky Brewster, and as the affably goofy commandant of the Police Academy franchise, has died. Gaynes was 98.

A long-time stage actor and singer—whose early career included a stint in the cast of the New York City Opera—Gaynes made his first TV performance in 1955, on NBC’s Television Opera Theater. From there, he worked steadily for the next 48 years, building up credits on shows like Bonanza, Columbo, and The Defenders. It wasn’t until the 1980s, though—when Gaynes was already in his mid-to-late 60s—that he fully entered the public consciousness with his iconically deep-voiced performances. First, he secured a small-but-memorable role in Dustin Hoffman’s 1982 hit Tootsie, as a male co-worker smitten with Hoffman’s cross-dressing creation. Then, two years later, he was cast ...

Great Job, Internet!: Colin Quinn’s Cop Show goes behind the scenes of a muddled procedural

by Joe Blevins
Corey

Watched a bunch of these.

Fantastic.

The characters in police procedurals may do their best to seem tough, competent, knowledgeable, and thoroughly in control of any situation life hands them, but the actors, writers, and directors who work on these shows are still the same vain, insecure, attention-starved airheads and crybabies as one would expect to find in show business. That’s the truth at the heart of Cop Show, a mockumentary web series created by and starring comedian Colin Quinn of Saturday Night Live fame. The series, now returning for a second season of episodes, each about five to seven minutes in length, is a production of automobile manufacturer Lexus’ L/Studio, dedicated to creating “subscription-style TV without a subscription (or a TV).” A third season is planned for later in 2016.

In Cop Show, Quinn plays a fictionalized version of himself, following in the footsteps of fellow comic Richard Belzer by playing the role ...
