Vikings: Valhalla spin-off in the works at Netflix

by Article Importer
Michael Ahr
Nov 20, 2019

The saga of Vikings made popular on the History Channel will continue in Valhalla, a Netflix offshoot from the original creator.

It should be no surprise given the popularity of History's flagship scripted series Vikings, here on this site and elsewhere, that series creator Michael Hirst has decided to continue the epic tale of the conquerors of the West in an off-shoot entitled Vikings: Valhalla, according to news from TVLine.

This sequel of sorts will be taking place on Netflix rather than the History Channel where Vikings is set to air the first half of its sixth and final season on December 4th in the US, and on Amazon Prime Video the day after here in the UK.

Valhalla will follow the exploits of one of the most well-known names in Viking lore: Leif Erikson. Taking place a century after the storyline of its predecessor, the spin-off also features historical figures such as Freydis, Harald Harada, and William the Conqueror. Like Vikings, this show will be filmed in Ireland, largely with the same crew, including executive producer Morgan O'Sullivan. Hirst has tapped Jeb Stuart to be the showrunner.

“I am beyond excited that we are announcing the continuation of our Vikings saga,” Hirst says. “I know that the millions of our fans across the globe will be thrilled by the belief being shown in our show by MGM and Netflix. Jeb Stuart, a truly wonderful writer, will bring new storylines and a powerful visceral vision to stories about some of the most famous Vikings known to history.”

Channing Dungey, Vice President of original series at Netflix, also chimed in adding, “Vikings: Valhalla promises to be everything that fans love about the franchise: heart-pounding, unstoppable action rooted in rich characters and dramatic storytelling that shines the light on family, loyalty and power. We are thrilled to bring the next iteration of the Vikings saga to life.”

Vikings season six arrives on Amazon Prime Video in the UK on Thursday the 5th of December. Read our fan plea for the season here.

You Need to Watch ‘Brick’ Before Seeing Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’

by Kalyn Corrigan
Corey

Lover Brick. Knives Out looks cool too.

Movies to Watch Before Knives Out

(Welcome to Knives In, a series about the movies to watch before Rian Johnson’s Knives Out arrives in theaters.)

Put on your murder-solving hat, because /Film has given me jurisdiction to dive deep into one film a day in preparation for the release of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which hits theaters tomorrow. Each film relates to Johnson’s “whodunit” in its own unique way, and each picture should hopefully be viewed prior to patrons watching the new movie on the big screen.

Today, we’ll be discussing Rian’s Johnson’s 2005 debut Brick, and how the movie is a perfect companion piece to his modern day murder mystery.

Hard boiled detective types, library denouements, good bulky sweaters, and contemplative sun covered car drives down long stretches of golden road. Musty mansions, razor sharp shoulder pads, stuffy shootouts and beautifully dangerous women. These darkly details infuse each Rian Johnson presentation with strong noir vibes, starting with his directorial debut Brick in 2005, and peppered throughout his entire resume, all the way through to his latest, Knives Out. Although Johnson himself argues against such categorization – Brick is a film noir, while Knives Out is a whodunit, he stubbornly insists in interviews – both films are clear products of his fascination with the Bogie and Bacall led black and white pictures from the 1940s, and the mystery plot driven, Dashiell Hammett penned novels of the 1930s. Johnson’s first movie may star high school students spouting slang like trench coat wearing cads on a shoestring budget, but when you get down to brass tacks, the fact is that at their core, both Brick and Knives Out are movies about the reluctant hero hunting for clues, trying to solve a case.

Whereas his 2019 star studded big budget production showcases some truly grandiose and admittedly more straightforward gumshoe clues, like a bejeweled knife and a piece of paper containing the bright bold letters “I know what you did”, Brick is more a product of its limitations, relying on code words like “Tug” and “Pin”, a torn party invitation, a distinctive cigarette with an arrow on the filter. However, what Brick lacks in lux and finery it makes up for in emotional investment. The murder mystery at at the center of the story deters a bit from the Agatha Christie style of Knives Out, choosing not to place the emphasis on the twist, but rather, the tugging of the heart strings. When Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) finds the love of his young life dead in a storm drain, he makes it his mission to learn who was involved, who pulled the trigger, and which particular foe put his forever girl Emily (Emilie de Ravin) in harm’s way.

Admittedly, Brick is much more of a straightforward noir than Knives Out. Both films display Johnson’s love for chase scenes, but whereas Brendan is donning worn out loafers on his foot chase, Marta (Ana de Armas) is flooring it in her sneakers via her compact car. Both films contain a scene that reveals information in the library – Brick actually has more than one – but whereas Brendan is telling Laura (Nora Zehetner), “Now you are dangerous”, a line all but lifted from The Maltese Falcon, and calling her “Angel” like Bogie would call Bacall in The Big Sleep, the characters in Knives Out speak with dialogue that is a little less heightened.  Yet, both films carry an emphasis on objects, on evidence, the camera focusing on images that stay in our brains long after the reels have finished rolling. These moments signify to the audience that whatever we’re looking at is important to the plot, allowing viewers to put themselves in the mind of the detective and follow along with him. Learning the clues at the same speed as the investigator helps us to play along, as if we, too, are right there in that gothic mansion, ready for action, on the case.

When Johnson’s first film won the Special Jury Prize for originality of vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, fans and critics alike wondered how the writer/director/editor managed to make a modern day film noir feel so believable and grounded. How could words like “Heel it now, dig?” come out of the mouths of early 2000s teenagers and yet, the film maintains an air of elegance that resonates with audiences? The answer is because when the kids say the lines, they’re not winking at the camera. Just as Johnson proudly assures patrons that Knives Out is not going to be Clue, neither is his first movie meant to be an arch parody. Gordon-Levitt, Ravin, Meagan Good and Lukas Haas play their characters straight, creating an environment that feels real, so when the situation grows direr, the outlandish events are easier to accept. Brendan’s bandaged snout may be a clear callback to Jack Nicholson’s J.J. Gittes in Chinatown, and the bird on the mailbox of the safe house might be an overtly obvious homage to The Maltese Falcon, but our ability to relate to the roles causes us viewers to root for the cynical school-goer to make it out of the Pin’s headquarters alive.

Johnson’s tendency to draw inspiration from books rather than other features harkens back to the mindset of another filmmaker, Park Chan-wook, and his habit of calling on literary classics to inform his own works of art. Admittedly a fan of Franz Kafka, director Park’s use of motifs in his movies display his affinity for seeing stories as a physical journey, notoriously remarking to reporters that if you want to be relaxed, you should just go to a spa. Even his 2013 film Stoker plays like a loose adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’, inadvertently proving that Mia Wasikowska would make a perfect Mary Katherine Blackwood if given half the chance. Although Johnson himself has never publicly admitted any sort of affection for the South Korean director, his explosive drama room scene in Brick where Brendan throws a nearby clock at the mirror and it shatters, Kara doused in geisha makeup just below, evokes an eerily similar vibe to Park’s Lady Vengeance when the titular characters sits and laughs below a reflected surface, both scenes being shot with the camera nearly on the floor, pointed upward, the siren smirking. There’s even a moment where Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) is donning a costume that nearly covers her eyes in The Last Jedi, evoking an image that’s very similar to Geum-ja Lee (Yeong-ae Lee)’s infamous ensemble, as she welcomes Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and Finn (John Boyega) back into the loving arms of the Resistance.

Park’s not the only possible cinematic influence, though – a much clearer one is John Carpenter. One of the things that’s so lovely about Brick is how it brings big Escape From New York vibes, especially the way the house lamp in the Pin’s pimped out van mirrors The Duke’s (Isaac Hayes) lit up Cadillac. A true pupil of the master, Carpenter’s influence seems to have seeped into every single one of Johnson’s films – one could even argue that the ending of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is basically the same ending that Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken undergoes in Escape From L.A. In his latest movie, Knives Out, Johnson even takes Jamie Lee Curtis, an actor who first made her mark in Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween – a movie about a psycho with a knife who stalks babysitters in their homes – and casts her as a real estate agent who sells – you guessed it — homes, in a film with the word ‘knives’ in the title. Brick, like Halloween, is a low budget indie film that is set around high school kids. Basically, Johnson understandably has the hots for the master of horror, and that appreciation helps elevate his work to another level.

What’s so wonderful about Johnson going on to make gigantic blockbusters like The Last Jedi, and what’s so endearing about this particular director is how he has managed to pull off the impossible thing: he used his newfound clout, money and resources to go back and make movies like Brick again, the quiet and purposeful drawing room whodunit. The fact that Johnson had used the same cinematographer Steve Yedlin and the same producing partner Ram Bergman, and the same actor Noah Segan, and the same composer Nathan Johnson (who happens to be his cousin), proves that in his bones, director Johnson just wants to make good movies with people he trusts. Only now, he gets to cast actors like Toni Collette and LaKeith Stanfield and Chris Evans in a nearly single location detective thriller while simultaneously getting back to the angle that made him great in the first place – subverting the genre. For Brick, Johnson took a seedy, rainy, L.A. city noir like The Big Sleep and placed it in a suburban high school. For Knives Out, he took a fussy British crime thriller from the 1970s like Death on the Nile and placed it in modern day America. This both prevents the audience from tuning out and allows the actors to take the material more seriously, a combination that creates a truly clever and playful theatrical experience.

Johnson’s exciting new crime thriller is the perfect evidence of his evolution as a filmmaker, his roundabout way of coming back to square one and revisiting the material he’s always loved in order to craft the feature he was born to make. It’s a simple plot that’s plagued his thoughts and inspired his eye since day one: a lonely hero searching for clues.

Oh, So The Mandalorian Is Really Going to Be About That? Awesome

The first episode of The Mandalorian was excellent. But it was also about what we were all expecting: a sci-fi western focusing on a lone gunslinger hunting down and capturing wanted criminals. That all changed in the episode’s closing moment, though. And now with the second episode, we have an idea of what The

‘Hunters’ Trailer: Nazi Hunter Al Pacino Wants You To Choose Between Light and Darkness

by Chris Evangelista

Hunters Trailer

Put this one on your “Most Anticipated TV of 2020” list. In the Jordan Peele-produced Hunters, Al Pacino leads a team of Nazi hunters in 1977 New York City. That premise alone should sell you on this, but if not, this new trailer should do the trick. It’s mostly just Pacino giving a monologue in a thick accent, but at the last minute, “Street Fighting Man” from The Rolling Stones kicks in, knives come out, and things get very intense. Watch the Hunters trailer below.

Hunters Trailer

Oh hell yeah, I want to see this immediately. Hunters “Hunters follows a diverse band of Nazi hunters living in 1977 New York City. The Hunters, as they’re known, have discovered that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living among us and conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the U.S. The eclectic team of Hunters will set out on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their new genocidal plans.”

Al Pacino is the leader of the Nazi-hunting team, heading up a cast that includes Logan Lerman, Jerrika Hinton, Josh Radnor, Kate Mulvany, Tiffany Boone, Greg Austin, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Carol Kane, Saul Rubinek, Dylan Baker, and Lena Olin. While Pacino has gone away, it’s great to see him back in these high-profile projects again. This year he had Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman, and now he’s charging into 2020 with Hunters, a series that enables him to stab Nazis with big knives. How can you not be interested in that?

Hunters, produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Sonar Entertainment, was created by David Weil (Moonfall), who serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside executive producer Nikki Toscano. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (American Horror Story) directed the pilot and is an executive producer on the show as well. The series is executive produced by Win Rosenfeld (The Twilight Zone, Lorena) from Monkeypaw Productions; Nelson McCormick (Prison Break); Tom Lesinski (Mr. Mercedes) from Sonar Entertainment.

There’s no premiere date set yet, just the knowledge that Hunters will arrive on Amazon Prime Video in 2020.

The Watch's Magical Cast of Cops and Criminals Is Getting Bigger

by Charles Pulliam-Moore

The BBC’s upcoming series The Watch based on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books already has a rather robust cast playing a group of elite, though scrappy cops fighting to bring peace to their corrupt town where crime’s been legalized. But the show was clearly still in need of some proper villains to give its heroes…

Nicholas Cage to Play…Nicholas Cage in New FIlm ‘Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’

by Jeremy Konrad
Corey

Yeeeeeeeesssssss

Nicholas Cage is set to star in a new film titled The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. It may in fact be the most difficult role he has ever played: himself. The meta-film would see Cage playing Nicholas Cage, down on his luck, taking a offer of $1 million to appear at a Mexican billionaires birthday party. When things get hairy, Cage slips in and out of some of his previous characters to get out of the situation. The film is written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, and would be directed by Gormican. The pair previously worked together in the short-run series Ghosted for Fox.

This all sounds amazing. It is like the Nicholas Cage version of Being John Malkovich, only probably with more explosions and freak outs. I have massively enjoyed the career…resurgence? Cage has been enjoying as of late. Mandy was a fever dream delight, and this would just be the cherry on top. The only question is: which Cage characters need to be involved?

Nicholas Cage to Play...Nicholas Cage in New FIlm 'Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent'

Obviously Cameron Poe from Con Air. That is a given. I would think Stanley Goodspeed from The Rock. Red Miller from Mandy will come out for sure, as will H.I. McDunnough from Raising Arizona. Castor Troy from Face/Off can stay away, ditto for Memphis Raines from Gone in 60 Seconds. My last two votes would go to Johnny Blaze from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (not the first one) and Benjamin Gates from the National Treasure series. Blaze so in a bind he can pee fire on everyone, and Gates because he can steal an impotant map or something to get him out of Mexico with an elaborate plot. Can we also take a second to appreciate some of those dandy Nicholas Cage character names?

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has no set release date quite yet, but we will let you know when it does for sure.

Over the past few days people have started reported finding the Walking Dead Wine at their local liquor stores. The Walking Dead Wine has a reserve age of 2016 and is produced by the Last Wine Company with four different variations. The bottle labels are interactive video labels with mobile phone apps.

I’m mentioning this because a few people have reported finding the Last Wine Walking Dead #1 variant cover at their liquor stores. The Last Wine Variant is a Walking Dead #1 reprint produced for the Last Wine company. The Last Wine variant was first released at New York Comic Con where cover artist Chris Burnham sold his comp copies.

I have read reports of people finding piles of copies for the taking of this book at their alcohol supply stores but this might be something you need to ask an employee about. This is definitely a book you want to be looking for as the most recent sale on ebay was for just under $500.

I don’t think this will be the going rate for this book as more copies start hitting the market place but I do think these books have great potential for selling for more than the price of the Wine.

“Sons of Anarchy”: Kurt Sutter Shares “Mayans” Disney Joke That May Have Gotten Him Fired; “SoA” Prequel Series Thoughts

by Ray Flook

If you’re a fan of Sons of Anarchy and its spinoff Mayans M.C., then you’re very familiar with the name Kurt Sutter. Which means you’re also familiar with the fact that the SoA creator and Mayans co-creator was fired from the FX series last week. About a week-and-a-half later, Sutter has quite a few thoughts to share about his termination, his current relationship with FOX, the SoA prequel that almost was, and a number of other topics – and he shared them with Deadline Hollywood.

Here are just three of our takeaways from some excellent, in-depth interview reporting from Mike Fleming Jr. – make sure to check out the entire article here):

SONS OF ANARCHY — “Red Rose” — Episode 712 — Airs Tuesday, December 2, 10:00 pm e/p) — Pictured: Charlie Hunnam as Jax Teller. CR: Byron Cohen/FX

● While leaving open future possibilities, the writer and producer of The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, The Bastard Executioner, and Mayans M.C. isn’t vague in describing her current status with Disney-owned FOX:

“I would say that in the near future, my creative relationship at Fox Disney is done.”

● As for what started the downward spiral that was his relationship with Disney, Sutter believes it was a Walt Disney-themed joke – and his choice of replacement joke following – that lit the fuse:

“It all started with a joke. And not a very good one. There was a line in the Season 2 premiere. EZ [JD Pardo] and Coco [Richard Cabral] were getting off the bus at the school where the drugs were being processed. There was supposed to be a really gnarly playground out front. Filled with debris, dangerous looking swings, sharp objects, rusty jungle gym, etc. As they exited, Coco sees EZ’s distracted and says: Lighten up Boy Scout, and gesturing to the playground, says, We’re going to Disneyland. EZ replies: Yeah? Guess this is where Walt buried all the Jews he had killed. Coco comments: That’s dark man… And exits.”

“So when I was informed that the Walt, Jew killing line had to go, I agreed and changed it to…We’re going to Disneyland. And now EZ says, Yeah… if Mickey and Pluto were pedophiles.”

● Though admitting that the prospects of it are now dead, Sutter imagined a limited series focusing on Jax’s father that would’ve had a Sherlock structure of fewer but longer episodes: “The way I write, the episodes are way longer than they are supposed to be anyway. So that to me would have been ideal.”

Sutter continued by sharing his vision of how the series would lay out overall:

“To do four movies basically and tell a story that starts in Vietnam with John Teller and Piney and taking it through the last of the first nine members of the club to show up. Which was Clay. And then ending it there. I didn’t want to fuck with the mythology that we had laid down. I just wanted to tell the story with the loose pieces we already had. I wanted the tone to be different, because it’s period. We are in a pretty rugged time right now, but it takes place in probably one of the most tumultuous periods, politically and socially, in the 60s with the Vietnam War. I wanted to really let the time and place and politics influence story. Tonally, I think it would have been a little different than Sons. But that’s as far as I got. I never sat down and started breaking story. I just knew, that’s where I wanted to begin, that’s where I wanted it to end and I knew it was a one-off.”

Sutter was fired from his role as series co-showrunner a little more than a month after Sutter announced he would be stepping down from his role if Mayans M.C. was picked up for future seasons (see below). Reportedly, the decision was made by FX CEO John Landgraf and Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment chairman Dana Walden and was based on “several complaints ” made about Sutter’s “behavior on the set of the series.” Sutter notified the series’ cast and crew of his departure via email – it’s still not known how this could impact his overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television, which included 20th TV, Fox 21, and FX Productions.

mayans m.c.
FX

Here’s a look at the letter Sutter sent to the Mayans team (from exclusive reporting from The Hollywood Reporter):

Dear Team Mayans,

Apparently, Disney HR and Business Affairs has conducted an investigation into the unacceptable conditions that have been created on the set of Mayans in season 2. As you know, I’ve removed myself quite a bit this season, allowing others to take a bigger role in producing the show. It appears that philosophy has backfired. It’s been reported by writers, producers, cast and crew that my absence and subsequent behavior when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment. Or at least that’s how Disney has interpreted it. I’m sure it’s true.

This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me. Not the way I wanted to end my 18 year relationship with FX. At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand.

I deeply apologize if I’ve made people feel less than or unsupported. My intention was literally the opposite. But clearly I’ve not been paying attention. My arrogance and chronic distraction has created wreckage. Just know, I adore this cast and crew.

I’m not sure what the fate of Mayans MC holds. But if it continues, you’ll still be in good hands. As I said at the premier, Elgin is ready to take on the challenge of running the show. I’m sure FX will get him the support he needs to find and follow his vision.

For those of you who wanted me gone, you win! For those of you who didn’t, you win too. Although I will no longer be involved, I have no doubt the new team will move things forward with the same quality fans have come to expect.

Thank you for the honor of working with all of you.

I don’t need, nor want, replies or condolences. I know where the love is. And for those of you who have it, I’m sure our paths will cross again.

Best,
ks

The news comes after Sutter had previously said that he was planning to step down from his role as co-showrunner on the series to allow co-creator and co-showrunner Elgin James sole run of the show.

Sutter made some serious waves in August at the official season premiere, announcing that he was stepping down from his executive producer role if the series was picked up for a third season. At the Hollywood screening, Sutter emphasized that a series centered on a Mexican motorcycle gang based on the California-Mexico border should be spear-headed by a person of color: “It’s time for the white man to leave the building.”

While initial reports were met with a sudden social media panic, fans took heart in knowing that the helm would still be run within the Mayans M.C. family: James would assume the role of showrunner for future seasons.

sons of anarchy
Sons of Anarchy/Mayans M.C./FX

Here’s what James had to say about his new role and working with Sutter for the past two seasons:

“Kurt Sutter changed my life. I couldn’t get a job in a Walmart or a Costco as a violent ex-felon. He took a shot on me … I don’t know what he saw in me … and the last two years I’ve learned so much from him that it’s left me speechless, really. I love everyone on our show so much. We’ve become a family. I’m so excited about what we get to do.”

sons of anarchy
Sons of Anarchy/Mayans M.C./FX

As for James being ready to take on the responsibility? No worries, fans… looks like he already has the right approach:

“F— yeah. I’m wearing a suit! Yeah, I am. Being the boss, all that means is taking the chains off and letting everybody do what they do. Everyone on our crew, our writers’ room and in our cast is brilliant. Our job is easy. Just turn the cameras on and let the chemistry happen.”

Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo) is a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Once the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp, EZ is trying to reconcile with his brother “Angel” (Clayton Cardenas) while searching for the truth behind their mother’s death. Meanwhile, their father “Felipe” (Edward James Olmos) is struggling to lead his sons down a righteous path.

Co-created by Sutter and James, Mayans M.C. also stars Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Richard Cabral, Danny Pino, and Emilio Rivera. The series is executive produced by Sutter, James, and Kevin Dowling. FX Productions and Fox 21 Television Studios produce.

sons of anarchy
Sons of Anarchy/Mayans M.C./FX

At the end of the show’s freshman season, James spoke about what he wants the focus of the second season to be: getting to the heart and soul (???) of the cast of character that populate the world of Mayans M.C.

“I just want to go deeper and rawer. [The cast] all met and we all fell in love with each other. I think a big part of that is realizing our hearts are all broken in the same places. And so now we have that trust in each other to go deeper.”

“High Fidelity”: Zoe Kravitz Series Reveals Preview Image, Hulu Premiere Date

by Ray Flook

Now that actress Zoe Kravitz‘s (Big Little Lies, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) spin on a whole new generation of Top 5 lists has finished swapping streaming homes within the Disney family, Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka‘s (Bull, Ugly Betty) updated Hulu romantic comedy series High Fidelity is offering viewers their first look at Kravitz in full DJ mode.

With the 10-episode first season set to debut on February 14, 2020, High Fidelity stars Kravitz, Jake Lacy (I’m Dying Up Here), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (On Becoming a God in Central Florida), David Holmes (Mr. Robot, Mindhunter), and Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA: Part II).

high fidelity
Hulu

Here’s an updated overview of the cast:

● Kravitz’s Rob is a record store owner who obsesses about music, pop culture, and top five lists – while trying to get a sense of herself and her life… and the “family” she’s surrounded herself with.

● Lacy’s Clyde is effortlessly cute, if not the coolest guy in the room. A recent NY transplant from LA, he’s still trying to figure out how to navigate the city. Despite his lack of interest in music, he reveals a funny and open side that intrigues Rob (Kravitz). But he might prove to be just like all the other guys… or so it seems.

● Randolph’s Cherise is boisterous, likeable, funny with an infectious energy and thinks she knows everything. Cherise is passionate about music, and passionate about telling Simon (Holmes) and Rob (Kravitz) their musical taste sucks. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she’s still searching for her purpose in life – and will surprise everyone when she declares her own musical aspirations.

● Holmes’ Simon is sarcastic and cranky with an attractive quirkiness. Simon loves to judge others and has an eccentric yet extensive musical knowledge. Simon and Rob dated years ago, but eventually came out, which put an abrupt end to their relationship but not their friendship. Simon still happily works for Rob at the record store. He presents as condescending and aloof, all the while leading a lonely personal life while he searches for Mr. Right.

● Ben-Adir’s Russell “Mac” McCormack is charming, worldly, intelligent — though not at all pretentious — and was Rob’s most serious boyfriend. Everything seemed to be great, then one day he moved to London, and a year later Rob is still getting over it. But Mac may not be gone from her life for good.

In early April 2019, it was reported that the series would swap streaming services after the project began to take on a more mature tone than wouldn’t fit with a Disney+ audience. The company decided that moving the project to Hulu would “protect the vision of the creators and allow them to tell the story the way they envisioned.”

“Developing High Fidelity with Zoe, Veronica, Sarah and the team at Midnight Radio has been incredibly exciting and we want to ensure they are able to make the show they are envisioning as Disney+ is dedicated to supporting our creative partners. To that end, as the series’ creative evolved, our Disney+ team, collectively with ABC Signature, recognized that the show would be better suited for another platform. Given Disney’s equity stake in Hulu, we’re happy High Fidelity will continue as part of our extended family.”

– Agnes Chu, SVP Content, Disney+

2019/2020 season - New Streaming Services, Second Wave

Directed by Stephen Frears, starring co-screenwriter John Cusack (Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer) and based on Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel, 2000’s High Fidelity featured Cusack’s Rob Gordon, a music store owner who can’t seem to make his relationships last so he decides to seek out some of his old flames with the hope of getting some answers. The film also starred Jack Black, Kravitz’s mother Lisa Bonet, Joelle Carter, Joan Cusack, Sara Gilbert, Iben Hjejle, Tim Robbins, Todd Louiso, and Lili Taylor. This time around, Kravitz plays the record store owner/ultimate music fan who’s obsessed with pop culture and those Top 5 lists.

“Hulu is home to stories that tap into pop culture and redefine genres, so we jumped at the opportunity to bring a seminal work like High Fidelity into the fold as a Hulu Original. We are over the moon to work with Zoe, Veronica and Sarah to bring viewers this fresh take on an enduring story that has resonated with millions of people over the past two decades.”

– Beatrice Springborn, VP Content Development, Hulu

Kravitz, West, and Kucserka will executive produce alongside Midnight Radio’s Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner; and Scott Rosenberg, who co-wrote the High Fidelity feature. Rosenberg and Midnight Radio will produce the series alongside ABC Signature Studios (SMILF).

Shep Smith Learns to Embrace Life, Leaves FOX News Airwaves Effective Friday [VIDEO]

by Ray Flook

FOX News original Shepard “Shep” Smith will be leaving the self-proclaimed news network after 23 years, making the announcement during his Friday show – which will be his last.

Here’s a look at final sign off from Smith (who had been with the network since 1996), followed by his official statement:

“Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News and begin a new chapter. After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged. The opportunities afforded this guy from small town Mississippi have been many. It’s been an honor and a privilege to report the news each day to our loyal audience in context and with perspective, without fear or favor. I’ve worked with the most talented, dedicated and focused professionals I know and I’m proud to have anchored their work each day — I will deeply miss them.”

While some may be surprised by the news of Smith departure, others are surprised the respected achor was able to last as long as he did – especially at a “news network” that started hard-right partisan and never looked back. Smith was one of the rare few who didn’t work off of talking points from The White House and was willing to speak truth-to-power. FOX News – and Smith specifically – have come under “Twitter attacks” from Donald Trump over their reporting.

Whether or not that had impact on Smith’s decsion remains unclear.

Here’s what Jay Wallace, President & Executive Editor of Fox News Media, had to say in a statement:

“Shep is one of the premier newscasters of his generation and his extraordinary body of work is among the finest journalism in the industry. His integrity and outstanding reporting from the field helped put FOX News on the map and there is simply no better breaking news anchor who has the ability to transport a viewer to a place of conflict, tragedy, despair or elation through his masterful delivery.

We are proud of the signature reporting and anchoring style he honed at FOX News, along with everything he accomplished here during his monumental 23-year tenure. While this day is especially difficult as his former producer, we respect his decision and are deeply grateful for his immense contributions to the entire network.”

“Vikings” Season 6: While He May Wear The Crown, Was He “Bjorn” to Lead? [TRAILER]

by Ray Flook

Series creator and writer Michael Hirst‘s (Elizabeth, The Tudors) critically-acclaimed series Vikings is set to storm its way back to HISTORY for its final season on Wednesday, December 4, at 9 p.m. ET/PT – with the 20-episode sixth season kicking off with a two-hour premiere. After the premiere, the following eight episodes will air every Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT; with the remaining ten episodes set to air in 2020 – and series regular Katheryn Winnick (Lagertha) taking the helm for one episode, marking her directorial debut.

HISTORY

“I always knew how ‘Vikings’ would end and, after 89 episodes, I truly believe the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons has been told and we are leaving our beloved fans with the proper and definitive ending they so deserve. Although it is bittersweet there are still 20 episodes left and the most ambitious and intensely emotional episodes are still to come.”

– Michael Hirst, Creator/Writer/Executive Producer

Revenge, drama and chaos closed out the mid-season five finale. Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen), a self-proclaimed God ruling over Kattegat with alarming terror, charged his army into battle against his enemy and brother Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig).

Unleashing a fiery guerilla warfare, the two brothers refused to surrender – blood, pride and the crown weighed too heavily on both of their shoulders. In the final moments, Ivar was forced to flee an imminent fate, disappearing into the darkness and securing Bjorn’s victory. Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), reborn after experiencing severe delusions from the major love she’s lost, emerged to crown Bjorn as the new rightful king.

Season six returns following the battle between brothers which has left Bjorn victorious and a hero to the people who have been under the tyrannical rule of Ivar for so long. As the new leader of Kattegat, Bjorn struggles to fill his late father’s shoes as king, while facing several dilemmas and wrestling with the idea that power overshadows morals.

Meanwhile, Ivar, searching for a new path to separate him from his past, is seen traveling along The Silk Road eventually leading him to Russia. He meets his match in Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky), a ruthless and unpredictable Russian ruler, who shocks even Ivar with his merciless actions. While Lagertha has her own agenda – to live a quieter and less public life on her own farm, but new dangers lurk close to home.

This season, the Vikings continue to take over Scandinavia as Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and Torvi (Georgia Hirst) travel to Iceland to uncover the mystery circling around Floki’s (Gustaf Skarsgård) disappearance and Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) pursues his personal vendetta against Ivar.

New Details Emerge About Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’

by Aedan Juvet

Zack Snyder’s upcoming film Army of the Dead is gearing up to be one of his most ambitious projects yet with Netflix giving him free rein to go all out. With the film currently in production, Snyder recently spoke out about a few plot details of the film and it sounds like it will be juggling a few different interesting situations at once.

Speaking with WMMR, Snyder divulged the premise as:

“The movie takes place in Las Vegas. A zombie plague hits Vegas, and they’re able to contain the virus to the city – they build a wall out of shipping containers. And then the city falls. And six years later, one of the casino owners hires this group of zombie soldiers to go get his money that he left in a safe in the casino. It’s coming out on Netflix next winter.”

After the undeniable success of the director’s 2004 film Dawn of the Dead, there was instant interest in Snyder continuing his reboot of the 1978 version. Snyder’s adaptation became one of (if not the best) zombie films of all time, in an onslaught of endless zombies faster and more aggressive than we’ve previously witnessed in film and television.

The film will not likely have any major plot connection to Dawn of the Dead, but knowing the tone that Snyder has created in his first zombie-outbreak movie leaves plenty of promise. Something about a squad of mercenaries in Las Vegas against hordes of zombies just sounds like it’ll make one kickass movie when it comes to Netflix in 2020. The film is currently filming in Los Angeles, Albuquerque and Atlantic City, so it’s only a matter of time before we learn more about the upcoming film and we’ll take whatever we’re given!

Army of the Dead will feature Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Samantha Win and Ella Purnell.

‘The Gentlemen’ Trailer: Guy Ritchie Returns to His Crime Thriller Roots

by Hoai-Tran Bui

the gentlemen trailer

Despite what its title implies, The Gentlemen is not afraid to get a little dirty. The poster for the Guy Ritchie crime comedy seems to suggest some sort of riff on Kingsman or even the director’s sleek 2015 spy thriller The Man from U.N.C.L.E. But with the release of its first trailer, The Gentlemen may in fact be a bit of an ironic title.

Originally named Toff GuysThe Gentlemen is more of a throwback to Ritchie’s grimy crime capers like Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Matthew McConaughey leads an all-star cast in The Gentlemen as a notorious American drug lord who finds himself embroiled in a London territory war. Watch The Gentlemen trailer below.

The Gentlemen Trailer

Now that he’s got his paycheck from helming this year’s Aladdin live-action remake, Guy Ritchie is taking the chance to go back to his roots. The Gentlemen is all smart-talking British gangsters — including Hugh Grant in a particularly outrageous accent — and deadly deeds gone wrong.

The film follows American expat Mickey Pearson (McConaughey), who has built a successful marijuana empire in London. But when his rivals learn that he’s looking to cash out and get out of the business, it explodes into all-out war, led by a greedy young upstart played by Henry Golding, who looks like he’s having the time of his life. Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, and Eddie Marsan also star in The Gentlemen. It’s an impressive international cast that Ritchie told Entertainment Weekly was the central conceit of this film.

“What I wanted was British aristocracy, New World American drive, and all of the fun to be had with bringing those two worlds together,” Ritchie said. “Marijuana’s kind of fun, but nevertheless serious and there’s money involved.”

Here is the synopsis for The Gentlemen:

From writer/director Guy Ritchie comes THE GENTLEMEN, a star-studded sophisticated action comedy. THE GENTLEMEN follows American expat Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him (featuring an all-star ensemble cast including Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant).

The Gentlemen premieres in theaters on January 24, 2020.

The Last To Know: The Rarest DMZ Book

by Jason Shaw
Corey

Loved this series. I always said this would make a fantastic show.

It's been a while that I have analyzed a final issue of series, but a recent announcement about a favorite Vertigo series has inspired me!

It was announced Tuesday that Ava DuVernay, who will direct DC's New Gods movie, will direct the HBOMAX pilot to the DC/Vertigo published Brian Wood property DMZ. The series features, a very timely topic, a second American Civil War.

While most speculators are clamoring for the first issue of the series DMZ #1, which was published January 2006 or the preview in Y the Last Man #37, be warned that the 2008 Convention Exclusive edition of DMZ #1 was published September 2008.

Rather, I would look for perhaps the rarest DMZ book, the 1:10 incentive of the final issue DMZ #72, which was published February 2011. According to Comichron, there should be only 599 copies of this book and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find in the wild. There are no graded copies of this variant in the CGC Census. (There's only one graded copy of the regular cover.)
