Ranking movies or TV shows is easy compared to more traditional art. There are a finite amount of scifi TV shows and movies you can watch, but pop culture art is damn near infinite. Every sliver of the internet is chock-full of it, not to mention the professional galleries, poster companies, on and on.

A Cure For Wellness, The Long Awaited Directorial Return Of Gore Verbinski
Punk rock guitarist turned innovative film director Gore Verbinski has returned to the directorial chair for the first time since his 2013 film The Lone Ranger. That being the fifth Johnny Depp movie the director did in a ten-year span, having only taken a break to do the Weather Man with Nicolas Cage.
In his new film, Verbinski tells the story of an ambitious young executive (Dane DeHaan) is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from a mysterious wellness center located in a remote area of the Swiss Alps run by Jason Isaacs. But soon he is caught up in the strange treatments and the terrifying secrets that will test his sanity. And though he just came to retrieve his boss, he may never leave.
Verbinski is well suited for a psychological thriller like this, probably more so than the big budget films he’s been focused on for the last decade.
A Cure for Wellness opens February 17th, 2017.

Fireplaces Of Marvel Heroes!… No, Really.
Marvel and Coca-Cola have gotten into the Holiday spirit in an odd way. They have put out five different yule log videos, but showing the fireplaces of different Marvel heroes. Included in this are Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ms. Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Let’s start off with Captain America’s Brooklyn apartment. Don’t know of many apartments with fireplaces… but I’m from L.A. so I could be wrong. Also, how broke is Cap that his chair is being held up by a stack of books? Nice picture of Peggy Carter on the side table. And I wondered what happened to his first shield.
We move on to Ms. Marvel’s New Jersey home where she has either left he costume on the couch or she made her own throw pillow. And is that a huge teapot on her coffee table or does a djinn come out of that thing when you rub it?
Now we cross the Rainbow Bridge to Thor’s home in Asgard. We see some lovely stained-glass work that matches the ornamentation above the mantle and on the door. There is a large dinning room table with not where to sit and what looks to be mini versions of Mjolnir and Thor’s helmet on the mantle.
Back down to earth we get a look at Tony Stark’s Manhattan apartment with four Iron Man helmets across the top of the fireplace. There is also a painting of himself by Adi Granov hanging over the fireplace. Which oddly seems appropriate. And like with most bachelor pads, there is a pizza box on the ottoman.
And finally we got out into the vastness of space to see what passes for a fireplace on the Guardians of the Galaxy’s spaceship. If you look closely you can see Baby Groot warming up by the glowing orb.
‘Westworld’ Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
Now that we’ve had enough time to digest the Westworld season one finale, I wanted to take a look towards Westworld season 2. What do we know about the second season of this hit HBO series? I took a deep dive into interviews with Westworld co-creators and showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as chats with the series’ stars Evan Rachel Wood, Jimmi Simpson and Anthony Hopkins, a Facebook live Q&A as well as HBO’s ARG website and marketing materials.
In total, I swam through over two dozen different sources to uncover everything we know about Westworld season 2. So what did I find out? Hit the jump to board the train to Sweetwater.
Doctor Ford Is Dead, But Anthony Hopkins Could Return
Jonathan Nolan has confirmed that Ford is “dead,” putting to rest theories that Dolores murdered a host version of the park founder. He told IGN, “That was definitely a real Ford.” We do know that it was Dolores’ choice to kill Ford, and not a planned loop by the park creator: “it’s not that Ford couldn’t have anticipated it … he knows he could have predicted this outcome, but it’s absolutely her call. It’s a bold new starting point for her character.” As for why Ford needed to die, Nolan explains that the hosts “realize the only way for these creatures to be truly free is for that God to die.”
If on a very literal level, if Ford’s voice is the last thing … we’ve established his voice as an almost telepathic control of the park. The only thing standing between the guests and the hosts is Ford, so he removes himself from that equation.
But that doesn’t mean Anthony Hopkins can’t return for Westworld season 2. Talking with Deadline, Nolan commented, “Well, that version of Ford is dead.” He could return to play a host version of the character or appear in possible flashback sequences. When asked about this prospect in interviews, Nolan admitted that “with this show, you want to assume nothing,” before offering, “It was one of the greatest privileges of my career so far getting to work with Anthony for the first season.”
In another interview, Nolan says, “As for the show, where it goes, the characters — we’ve well established we’re playing in a more advanced ruleset in terms of death and resurrection than other [projects] I’ve worked on. So I would say: Assume nothing.”
During their Facebook Live broadcast, one viewer asked if Ford could have created a host version of himself using that fabrication machine in his secret underground laboratory. The producers called the question “really, really good” but wouldn’t answer it directly, only noting that Ford’s “sacrifice is real.”
I think in this line of questioning, we are approaching it from the view of a human. Maybe Ford doesn’t see the benefit of keeping his aging old human body alive? Maybe he did fabricate a host version of himself, and that is the version that will continue his life and legacy through the immortality of his creation.
Each Season Will Have a Distinct Feel and Theme
Jonathan Nolan has said that their goal is “to tell an ambitious story in season-long chapters, each with a distinct feel and theme.” So the big question is, what will be the distinct feel and theme of the second season? The answer may lie in our next quote:
Season 2 Will Be About Chaos and Transcendence
In the end of season featurette, Jonathan Nolan revealed that the second season would be about chaos:
If the first season was defined by control, the second season is defined by chaos. That’s part of what we come to understand Ford has been planning all along … Ford has set in motion what he thinks is a plan. The nature of that plan is something we explore in the second season. What his intentions are: are they to let Dolores or the other Hosts escape? Are they simply to teach the human guests a lesson?
Producer J.J. Abrams also added, “What happens at the dawn of consciousness? What happens when you begin to actually wake up? Elsewhere, when asked for three words each to describe season 2 during their Facebook Live, Nolan said “total f–king mayhem,” while Joy added “madness and transcendence.” Commenting to THR, Lisa Joy noted that the control vs. chaos theme reminds her of the Langston Hughes poem “about what happens to a dream deferred. We’ve set this up as Dolores living in a dream, but it’s someone else’s dream. She can’t live her own life. Then, at the end, we see. It explodes and goes out with a bang.”
Don’t Expect to See a Lot of the Same Sets
Nolan has said they have no intentions on revisiting the same locations season to season:
We never had any intention of staying in one place. We don’t want to shoot on the same sets for 10 years. We want to blow the sets up and move on to another piece of the story. So we said when we started working on the series that we wanted to be ambitious. We wanted each season to increase in that ambition and in the scope of the show. It also follows the story of our hosts. Their lives begin in loops, and then expand and change and grow. It’s an origin of a new species. We want to follow that story all the way to the bitter end.
Now does this mean the show will leave Westworld behind altogether and transition to Shogun World? I don’t think so.
Westworld Will Still Be the Center of This Show
But Nolan warns us that “this series is called Westworld” and that “Westworld remains the center of our narrative.”
That’s the title of the show and that’s what we’re doing, so that will remain the center and heart of what we’re doing. But we’re going to see the hosts start to realize and almost be offended by this notion: “Wait, we’re not the only ones here? There’s more?”
In another interview, he says “the hosts are going to become more curious about what else there is in this world for them to understand and explore. That’s where we want our show to go as well.”
Season One Was a Prequel to the Actual Show
Star Evan Rachel Wood has said that the first season of Westworld is “an amazing prequel and a good setup for the actual show.” But what does she mean by that? Nolan has explained that Ford’s story in this season was “a prologue to the larger story that we’re telling.”
In this narrative Ford is God. This is the death of God as the jumping off point for our story but also a full meal to itself.
Season 2 Will Shine Light On Guest Experience
Ome aspect we wish they showed more of was the guest experience of attending Westworld. Nolan told TV Line that the writers talked a lot about how the experience would feel for guests and they “laid out a lot of that logic in the writers’ room.” But when it became apparent that the season’s focus was the hosts, “it didn’t feel appropriate to spend too much time illuminating how unreal this place is, because the hosts believe in it so much up until that horrifying moment when they realize that it’s an artificial world. So we didn’t get bogged down in it.” But he promises that season two will “spend a little bit more time” in “shining a light on those aspects of the park — what does it feel like to come to it as a guest? — just a little bit before the mayhem starts.”

VOTD: These Water-Powered ‘Star Wars’ Speeder Bikes Are The Real Deal
While some of the technology that was once just the dream of sci-fi filmmakers has become real, most of what we’ve seen in the Star Wars universe is still just fantasy. Whether it’s ships that can travel at hyperspeed, lightsabers or space stations that can blow up entire planets, we just have to accept that some of these creations may never be real. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t come close to realizing some of our Star Wars dreams.
One of the most exciting sequences from Return of the Jedi is the speeder bike chase between Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia and some Imperial Scout Troopers in the thick forests of Endor. While we’ve yet to create vehicles that can fly through the air like speeder bikes, thanks to the power of water, we have the next best thing.
Check out some awesome water-powered Star Wars speeder bikes after the jump.
Here’s the cool video showing off these real life speeder bikes from Devin Super Tramp (via Sploid):
So how did they make these speeder bikes? Well, they actually just modified a neat little water-powered recreational vehicle that already existed. It’s called the Jetovator, and the company behind them was happy to help make this awesome video that even has adorable Ewoks and a Wilhelm scream.
This modified Jetovator is one of the most cool creations I’ve seen in awhile, and it makes me wish that they were more readily available to ride for the public. If I can’t speed through the forest on a flying bike, then I’d at least like to stream down a river thanks to the power of water.

The OA Trailer: Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s TV Series Will Hit Netflix This Friday
Netflix has announced a new television series from Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij called The OA. I was a huge fan of their films Sound of My Voice and The East. In fact, Sound of my Voice was supposed to be the start of a digital series but instead became a film. I’m excited to see what they can do with a longer storytelling format.
Along with the announcement of this new series, which airs on Netflix this Friday, they have released a trailer. Watch The OA trailer now after the jump and find out more about this new show.
The OA Trailer
Brit and Zal’s films have all featured a big high concept science fiction premise which has it’s smart and exciting ideas examined through the lens of a smaller character-based dramatic thriller. Their stories often have a compelling mystery at its core, making us consider what might otherwise not be possible. This television series seems no different, about a blind girl who goes missing and returns home to her community with her sight completely restored. She remembers what happened while she was gone, and those events are key to this stories’ mystery. I’m excited to unwrap this one this Friday.
Here is the official synopsis for The OA:
The Netflix original series The OA, which launches this Friday, is from visionaries Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (Sound of My Voice, The East), who created and wrote the eight chapter, mind-bending odyssey together. The show begins with a missing blind girl in her twenties, Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling), who comes home to the community she grew up in with her sight restored. Some hail her a miracle, others a dangerous mystery, but Prairie won’t talk about her seven years missing with the FBI or her parents.
Marling stars in the series and Batmanglij directs all episodes. The series also stars Emory Cohen (Brooklyn, The Place Beyond the Pines), Scott Wilson (The Walking Dead, Junebug), Phyllis Smith (The Office), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, Fury, Dig), Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact, Silent Hill), Patrick Gibson (The Tudors), Brendan Meyer (Mr. Young, The Guest) and newcomers Ian Alexander and Brandon Perea.
Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Sarah Esberg from Plan B (Oscar-winning producers of 12 Years a Slave) and Michael Sugar from Anonymous Content (True Detective, The Knick) are executive producers of the series, along with Marling and Batmanglij. The OA is a Netflix production.
The OA will be released on Netflix on December 16th, 2016.

‘The Fate of the Furious’ Trailer: Vin Diesel Betrays His Family
Next spring, blockbuster summer kicks off early again thanks to the arrival of Fast and Furious 8. Actually, the movie is now officially titled The Fate of the Furious, a new title scheme going right along with the unpredictable insanity that this franchise has come to deliver in recent years. What began as a franchise about street-racing and undercover cops has turned into a blockbuster sensation with unbelievable heists, incredible action, bitter rivalries and a close bond of family. However, that last part is about to be shake to its very core.
See what we’re talking about in the first The Fate of the Furious trailer after the jump.
That’s right, after being adversaries who became allies and even friends, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are at odds again. When you have a crew that’s as close as this one, featuring the likes of Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, the only thing you can do to shake things up is to tear them apart. And the one thing this franchise hasn’t done yet is turn Vin Diesel against the rest of the people he calls family. Oh, and Dwayne Johnson is working with Jason Statham now.
Could you imagine how much more of an impact this story would have if we hadn’t sadly lost Paul Walker before now? If Dom was forced to turn on his makeshift brother, that would be absolutely mind-blowing. But we’ll have to settle for Vin Diesel being forced to betray everyone else this time, all at the behest of Charlize Theron, and as crazy as the action looks this time around (complete with a submarine), I think that will be just fine for franchise fans.
Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.
From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.
The Fate of the Furious hits theaters on April 14, 2017.

VOTD: This ‘Rogue One’ Commercial Will Make Tears Come Out Of Your Face
The brand of Star Wars is slapped on anything and everything you can find in stores. While it’s easy justified to be cynical about all the merchandising and branding of the sci-fi saga for the profit of corporations, sometimes the corporate sponsors who use Star Wars to promote their brand create something truly special and moving at the same time.
Case in point, Globe Telecom, Inc., the top mobile brand in the Philippines, has released a Rogue One commercial that is one of the most touching things you’ll see today. Maybe it’s just because it’s the holidays, or maybe it’s because 2016 was awful, but this commercial will pull tears right out of your eyes.
Sure, this is an advertisement for a massive mobile services company manipulating us into thinking better of them. But this Rogue One commercial also illustrates why something like Star Wars is so important to some people. It’s what makes us feel like we belong. It’s something that we can latch onto when the odds are stacked against us. It can help us cope with tragedy. It can inspire us to live up to our potential.
In the case of this commercial, a young girl uses a Stormtrooper helmet to hide her oxygen mask. Even though this makes her stand out, it makes her feel comfortable. Her brother wears his Stormtrooper hoodie with her in solidarity. And then her peers all wear Stormtrooper helmets so that she doesn’t have to feel embarrassed or alone. That’s just beautiful.
