There's Finally an Update on the Movie Version of Mark Millar's Time-Traveling Comic Chrononauts

by Germain Lussier

Before Mark Millar’s Chrononauts was even released in 2015, the comic had already been tapped for a movie adaptation. However, as is so often the case these days, the updates stopped there. Fast-forward to today and there is finally some movement on the project.

We’ve Got The Full Trailer To HBO’s Wizard Of Lies With Robert De Niro as Bernard Madoff

by Bill Watters

tease-1-spell-41047701_pro35_10-1920

The full trailer has finally dropped for HBO’s upcoming non-fiction drama film, Wizard of Lies. The story is a look at investment tycoon and con man Bernie Madoff (played by Robert De Niro) and his family (Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife Ruth, and Alessandro Nivola and Nathan Darrow as his sons Mark and Andrew) as his long-running Ponzi scheme begins to collapse around him .

The films creation is itself a family affair as it is being directed by veteran filmmaker, Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam, and Wag the Dog), with a screenplay by Levinson’s son, Sam Levinson. Sam’s only prior writing credit was also for his first directorial effort, the 2011 Another Happy Day.  Wizard is based on the book of the same name by New York Times reporter, Diana Henriques. Diana was the investigative lead on the paper’s investigation into the scheme and she held the first interview with Madoff in prison. Diana will be playing herself in the film.

Over the span of several decades, Madoff would take investors funds and use those to create fake profit returns for earlier investors. That way anyone actually seeking to pull any of their funds would find actual cash available. However under the hood, there were never any investments or trades actually being executed. The full extent of the financial impact of Madoff’s crimes may never be known; by the time he was sentenced in 2009 the total losses to investors exceeded $18 billion. He was sentenced to 150 years in prison and will be eligible for release in the Winter of 2139.

Christy Mack recounts what made War Machine trial so agonizing

by MMAjunkie Staff

Nearly the past three years have been an ordeal for Christy Mack, the former adult film star whose ex-boyfriend, War Machine, was found guilty last month of multiple charges in connection with beating Mack.

In a clip of Tuesday’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” Mack shed tears as she opened up about what made War Machine’s trial so difficult for her to endure.

“I never looked at him, except for when I was asked to identify him,” Mack said. “And there was one time – I believe it was in the initial hearing – where he had mouthed that he loved me. And that was extremely difficult. I began balling immediately. Because for a long time I did feel still emotionally connected to him. …

“It stays with you for a long time. And while I don’t feel the love that I used to feel for him now, going through this process with somebody that you did love – or that I felt like I loved – is extremely hard.”

On Aug. 8, 2014, War Machine broke into Mack’s house and attacked her and then-boyfriend Corey Thomas, leaving both with serious injuries. Mack suffered a broken nose, fractured rib and severely ruptured liver, among other injuries. A jury found War Machine guilty on 29 of 34 counts, including domestic violence, sexual assault and kidnapping.

War Machine faces up to life in prison for his crimes.

MARVEL’S HIP-HOP VARIANTS (PART 14)

by Yoni Ouziel

Hey everyone! I’m sorry for the long hiatus but I’m back with a few more Hip Hop cover homages! Hope to do more articles in the coming weeks! Also hope everyone has a Happy Easter or is having a Happy Passover!

Iron Fist 1 Redman: Doc’s Da Name
Redman was always a favorite of mine because he was one of the few rappers from the East Coast from New Jersey instead of NYC. Since I grew up in Jersey this made me happy for some reason.
Black Panther & the Crew 1 The Firm: The Album
The Firm got their start on one of my favorite albums of all time. Apparently this album wasn’t nearly as good.
America 1 Hamilton the Musical
The first of the hip hop covers to not pay homage to an album, this one is modeled after a Broadway play. Hamilton is one of the hottest tickets in New York city and the whole play is rapped instead of singing. The cover below is the second printing.
Royals 1 Frank Ocean: Blonde
I don’t know Frank Ocean’s music but I have a lot of respect for an openly gay man in the Hip Hop industry.
Nick Fury 1 RZA: Bobby Digital
The RZA is one of my favorites but I never really liked his Bobby Digital stuff. Still a cool cover on both signed by the very same artist, Bill Sienkiewicz.
Monsters Unleashed 1 Joey Badass: B4.DA.$$
I know nothing about this artist and don’t really like the homage…pass

I’m hoping I will be more consistent with my articles in the future and hope Khoi Cakes hasn’t missed me too much!

Comedian and ‘Chappelle’s Show’ Actor Charlie Murphy Dead at 57

by Ben Pearson

Charlie Murphy dead at 57

Here’s some sad news: TMZ reports that Charlie Murphy, older brother of comic superstar Eddie Murphy and a beloved comedian in his own right, died this morning after losing a battle with leukemia. He was 57 years old.

Murphy appeared in more than 50 film and TV shows over the course of his career, including Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, The Player’s Club, Roll Bounce, Night at the Museum, The Boondocks, Black Jesus, Power, and many more. He also wrote Vampire in Brooklyn (in which his brother Eddie played a vampire) and Norbit (in which his brother played a meek man and his nightmarish wife).

I was introduced to Murphy’s work through his hilarious appearances on Dave Chappelle’s legendary Comedy Central series Chappelle’s Show, in which Murphy told “True Hollywood Stories” and reenacted them in sketches. Even if you didn’t watch Chappelle’s Show back in 2004, you’ve undoubtedly seen or heard someone reference this classic sketch with musician Rick James.

But my personal favorite favorite Charlie Murphy moment is a sketch from the show in which he tells a story about the time he and his friends played Prince and the Revolution in a game of basketball.

It doesn’t get much funnier than that. Murphy’s deadpan delivery, the way he still seems surprised and confused by how it all went down that day…that still cracks me up more than a decade after I first saw it. It’s a testament to his delivery that everyone repeated his lines for years and they still maintain their power today. He was that funny.

It’s tremendously sad when anyone loses a battle with cancer, but the saddest part of Murphy’s death seems to be that his death was unexpected. Sure, he was undergoing chemotherapy, but TMZ says:

Family members tell us they’re absolutely shocked because they thought he was getting better. We’re told the family would call him frequently, and he’d even joke they were calling too much.

Murphy’s manager told the outlet that he died in a New York City hospital earlier this morning. Just before his death, Murphy sent one final tweet, which has now (weirdly) been deleted:

Charlie Murphy tweet

Rest in peace, Charlie Murphy. You’ll be missed.

The 10 Best ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Episodes

by Chris Evangelista

best mystery science theater 3000 episodes

In the not-too-distant future (this Friday, April 14, to be exact), Mystery Science Theater 3000 will return, bringing terrible movies and endless riffing along with it. The original iteration of the show ran for a whopping 10 seasons, spanning 197 episodes and a feature film, building a devoted cult following in the process. “Keep circulating the tapes!” became the show’s rallying cry, as fans would record episodes on VHS tapes (remember those?) and swap them amongst each other. Even if you weren’t familiar with what Mystery Science Theater (or MST3K, as most fans call it) was, there was a good chance that if you were flipping channels between 1988 and 1999, you likely came across it in its distinct form: a cheap-looking movie with three silhouettes down in the right-hand corner. It turned riffing on bad movies into an art form.

To celebrate the show’s return, I’ve gone ahead and assembled the best of the best – these are the greatest episodes of the series, a perfect marathon for seasoned fans and newcomers alike.

But First: Some Background

There was nothing like it at the time, and there still isn’t, really. The brain-child of stand-up comedian Joel Hodgson, MST3K originally debuted on low-budget TV channel KTMA in 1988, then jumped to The Comedy Channel (later dubbed Comedy Central) in 1991, where it would remain until 1996, before jumping a final time to The Sci-Fi Channel (or SyFy, as we know it today) in 1997, where it would remain until 1999.

The set-up is undeniably clever. A hapless working-class schlub (originally Hodgson, later replaced by Michael J. Nelson) is shot into space by two mad scientists in a fiendish plot for world domination through terrible movies. The Mads force Joel, and later Mike – trapped on the dog bone-shaped Satellite of Love with their two robot buddies Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo – to suffer through the cheesiest B-movies imaginable, believing that eventually they’ll hit upon the perfect movie to finally break the viewers’ spirit, and thus take over the world. The only way Joel, Mike and the bots stay sane is by endlessly mocking the films they’re forced to view.

It’s a premise that shouldn’t have worked so well. In reality, if you were sitting in a movie theater and three people sat down in front of you and started throwing jokes at the screen, you’d likely spring out of your seat and go get a manager. Yet MST3K struck the right balance, turning something normally perceived as rude into something endearing and difficult to recreate. Even in the age of painfully unfunny “live Tweets” over intentionally terrible junk like Sharknado, no one has ever come close to matching MST3K’s charm, not even the popular spin-off Rifftrax. The show struck a balance with its delightful DIY-nature, full of in-camera special effects, junkyard props and rather simplistic presentation.

In 2015, series-creator Hodgson worked with Shout! Factory to secure the rights to MST3K, and then launched a Kickstarter campaign intent on reviving the series. Hodgson had expected that maybe the Kickstarter would reach its goal in a month, but it actually surpassed it within a week, which shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise. MST3K was always a show tailor-made for cult following. So delightfully off-beat and so hard to pin-down, MST3K spoke to outsiders and self-proclaimed weirdos who found kindred spirits in the show’s pop-culture slinging characters. The rebooted series is headed for Netflix, and whether or not it can recapture the original show’s magic remains to be seen.

For now, though, let’s take a look back at the 10 Best Mystery Science Theater 3000 Episodes as we prepare for the show’s return.

1. I Accuse My Parents

Season 5 (now streaming on Netflix)

While MST3K frequently dabbled in cheesy sci-fi and genre films, the funniest episode revolves around a clunky, dopey stab at film noir from 1945, I Accuse My Parents. In the film, clueless teen Jimmy lies his way through life, trying to escape from his depressing home with his alcoholic mother and his negligent father. Jimmy’s lies take him far enough that he ends up getting involved with gangsters. The movie makes absolutely no sense, but it’s so earnest in its belief that it’s telling an important story about a good boy gone bad that it’s an absolute laugh riot to watch Joel and the bots mock it. In one lengthy sequence, Jimmy – on the lam from the crimes he’s committed – comes under the protection of the friendly owner of a greasy spoon diner. The diner owner says Jimmy can live with him rent-free on one condition: he has to accompany the man to church. “FORGET IT!” Joel, pretending to be Jimmy, shouts. When the scene abruptly cuts to a rowdy nightclub, Crow, taking on the voice of the diner owner, quips, “How do you like my swingin’ church, son?!” The film is preceded by a short educational film about truck farming, which is as depressing as it is silly.

2. Time Chasers

Season 8 (now streaming on Netflix)

Time Chasers is a low-rent sci-fi thriller from 1994 about a nerd who uses his Commodore 64 and a small airplane to create a time machine. He immediately turns around and sells the time machine’s patent to an obviously evil businessman, then has to spend the rest of the movie trying to right this mistake. Much time travel ensues, where the characters end up in a future that looks a lot like a shopping mall somewhere in Vermont. This is one of the more merciless episodes, with Mike and the bots endlessly mocking almost every facet of the film’s cheapo production. This was one of differences between host eras: the seasons with Joel in the lead tended to be sillier, with the riffing more playful. The episodes where Mike took over were willing to get a little nasty. That doesn’t make the Time Chasers episode any less funny, simply because the film is so committed to its premise, no matter how inept its script may be.

3. Mitchell

Season 5

Joe Don Baker is Mitchell, the laziest cop ever to put on a plaid sports coat, in this somewhat sleazy 1975 flick that Joel and the bots took on in Season 5. Mitchell is notable for being Joel’s final episode – the comedian had grown tired of being on camera and a rift had developed between him and his showrunning partner Jim Mallon. The episode ends with Joel rocketing off the Satellite of Love to freedom. Luckily for the Mads, they’ve recently hired temp Mike, who will take Joel’s place. As for Mitchell, it’s as drab as a crime thriller can be, loaded with some of the most un-thrilling car chases you’ll ever see. As Joel, Crow and Servo watch a low-speed chase, Servo observes, “This is what I’ll think of when I remember the movie Mitchell, and I will think of it.”

4. Pod People

Season 3 (now streaming on Netflix)

This 1983 French-Spanish sci-fi film follows a group of young people preyed upon by a murderous alien known as Trumpy (yes, really). Pod People was originally supposed to be a straight-up horror flick about a killer alien, but after the success of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the producers ordered the script changed. The end result is a schizophrenic mess about a killer alien who also befriends a young boy. Oh, also, there’s a rock band thrown in there somewhere. In one of the film’s most memorable moments, which could be used to summarize almost every film the MST3K crew watched, a recording lays down vocals on a new track, and we’re forced to watch the song run out from beginning to end. Once it concludes, his producer in the sound booth asks, “So what do you think?” The singer holds up his thumb and index finger in the international symbol for “Okay” before shouting “IT STINKS!”

5. The Final Sacrifice

Season 9

The Final Sacrifice, a Canadian horror-adventure film from 1990, is notable for having a hero with the unlikeliest of names: Zap Rowsdower. To be clear: this isn’t a film set in some far-off galaxy, or in the future. It takes place here on earth, in modern times, and just happens to feature a character named Zap Rowsdower. For some reason. “Rowsdower, is that a stupid name?” Crow asks when the character first reveals his monicker. This leads to endless riffing on Rowsdower’s name, as the denim-clad hero protects an awkward young boy from a cult made up of guys who wear ski-masks and tank-tops, for some reason. In one scene, we watch the masked, tank-top wearing cultists running through the woods brandishing weapons. “Ah, any given weekend in Canada,” Servo quips.

"U2 Producer’s Other Job: Selling CDs in Indonesia’s KFCs"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
NYT:
“CDs are still the No. 1 way to get music in Indonesia,” Mr. Lillywhite said, noting that a small percentage of the population has credit cards and internet connections are slow, hindering streaming. “In Indonesia, CDs are $4,” he continued. “And since nearly all of the record stores have closed down due to the cheap influx of pirated CDs, KFC is really the only place to buy them these days. People no longer go out to buy CDs on their own, but they do go out to buy chicken. And now buying a CD has become part of that experience. We even do concerts at KFC with some of our artists. So music and chicken have become intertwined.”

...

Mr. Lillywhite’s company, a subsidiary of KFC in Indonesia, sells 500,000 CDs a month alongside menu items like the Chick ’N Fillet sandwich and the Colonel Yakiniku Rice box.

‘Baby Driver’ Trailer: Volume Up, Pedal Down

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Looks sick. Should have an amazing soundtrack.

Baby Driver Trailer

Last month, Edgar Wright‘s latest film Baby Driver played SXSW and received plenty of rave reviews, including one from our own Jacob Hall. The critical acclaim and the buzz that followed was enough to convince TriStar Pictures to bump the film from its initial August release date all the way up to the end of June. They’ve got a lot of confidence in this one, and after seeing the first trailers, so do we.

Now another Baby Driver trailer has surfaced, this one set entirely to the Golden Earring tune “Radar Love,” which was featured in the theatrical international trailer that was released last month, but is used a little more effectively in this quick new trailer. Watch it below!

We get some adorable new shots of Ansel Elgort falling for a waitress played by Lily James, not to mention some slick new shots of the incredible stunt driving done in the movie. But even more importantly, we continue to get a vibe of how the music will work in this film, where Baby makes things happen to the beat and tune of whatever is playing from his iPod. Case in point, he has to stop the song at one point and rewind to give him the right rhythm for his drive.

In case you need any more explanation as to how music will really make this film pulse, Jacob Hall wrote in his review:

Baby Driver would be a fine action/heist movie if it was just that, but Baby’s music-driven existence gives the film an immediate and clever hook. With virtually every scene set to our hero’s eclectic soundtrack of oldies, indies, and everything in-between, the film becomes a musical. No one breaks into song, but they might as well. The rhythm of machine gun fire aligns with the beat of the soundtrack. Cups of coffee placed on a table act as a percussion back-up to the song blasting through the speakers. A walk through the city streets becomes a full-blown musical number that only we can notice, as the mundane choreography of day-to-day living syncs up with the music playing in Baby’s ears.

When it comes to Edgar Wright, I’m all-in, and the more I see from this movie, the more excited I get. Thankfully, trailers can only show much of how perfectly music works in this film, and with about 35 songs on the soundtrack (as confirmed by Wright himself), there will be plenty of musical moments that we won’t get to see until we’re sitting in the theater. I’ll be there opening day.

The rest of the Baby Driver cast includes Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Elsa Gonzalez, Lily James, Jon Bernthal and Kevin Spacey. Baby Driver is arriving this summer on June 28.

‘Chuck’ Trailer: The Inspiration for ‘Rocky’ Gets His Own Biopic

by Ben Pearson

Chuck Liev Schreiber

I’ve seen all of the Rocky movies a handful of times, but I’ve somehow never thought to do any research into writer/star Sylvester Stallone’s inspiration for his underdog boxing story. Sly apparently wrote the script in three and a half days after watching an unknown fighter named Chuck Wepner beat the odds and miraculously go 15 rounds against one of the greatest boxers of all time, Muhammad Ali, and now IFC Films is telling Wepner’s story in a new biopic starring Liev Schreiber. Check out the Chuck trailer below.

Chuck trailer

This is the latest sports film for Schreiber, who has appeared in films like Goon, Goon: Last of the Enforcers, Pawn Sacrifice (let’s say chess is a sport for these purposes), and The Hurricane. But most interestingly, the actor already has a direct connection to the Rocky mythology: Schreiber is credited as the HBO 24/7 narrator in 2015’s Creed, the spin-off sequel that featured Stallone reprising his beloved role as Rocky Balboa and starred Michael B. Jordan as Adonis, the son of Apollo Creed (who was loosely based on Muhammad Ali).

Chuck debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival under the title The Bleeder. Personally, I think they should have kept that title, because Chuck still conjures images of that now-cancelled NBC series that starred Zachary Levi (and I didn’t even watch that show). At least The Bleeder provides some insight into Wepner’s character beyond merely his first name. Titles are incredibly important for small movies like this that won’t be spending multiple millions of dollars in promotions, so here’s hoping they know what they’re doing because this actually looks like a fascinating film. There’s a solid supporting cast here that includes Naomi Watts, Elisabeth Moss, Ron Perlman, Jim Gaffigan, and Michael RapaportChuck is directed by Philippe Falardeau (The Good Lie).

If you’re the type of person who likes to know as much information as possible before you dive into something, here’s some homework for you. Back in 2011, ESPN produced a documentary in the company’s 30 for 30 series called The Real Rocky, which detailed Wepner’s story. Here’s the trailer for that doc:

Chuck hits theaters on May 5, 2017.

Chuck is the true story of Chuck Wepner, the man who inspired the billion-dollar film series Rocky—a liquor salesman from New Jersey who went 15 rounds with the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali. In his ten years in the ring, Wepner endured two knockouts, eight broken noses, and 313 stitches. But his toughest fights were outside the ring: an epic life of drugs, booze, wild women, incredible highs and extraordinary lows.

Comedy Central Fills Late Night Slot With The President Show

by Dan Wickline

It was once a slot filled by a fake conservative version of Stephen Colbert. It was then the home of Larry Wilmor’s The Nightly Show. Now, Comedy Central is giving the 11:30 PM slot after the Daily Show with Trevor Noah to President Donald Trump… well, sort of. The new series will start impersonator Anthony Atamanuik as Late Night Donald. It will also feature Peter Grosz as Mike Peance. The show is being executive produced by Adam Palley.

“Laughing at the President is a proud American tradition and we hope not to disappoint anyone in that department,” Atamanuik said. “But our political system is too broken for us to be content joking about one man, even though he is a disastrous silly little toddler boy. Mostly I’d just like to thank Comedy Central for giving us this platform to speak truth to power and if we’re lucky, end up in prison!”

The President Show begins April 27th.

Bellator 175 results: Sergei Kharitonov knocks Chase Gormley out cold in first round

by Matt Erickson

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sergei Kharitonov knows what it’s like to go to sleep from a punch. He had no qualms showing Chase Gormley what it’s all about.

Kharitonov (24-6 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) rebounded from a devastating 16-second knockout loss in his Bellator debut to shut down Gormley (14-6 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) in the first round with a massive KO at the 3:55 mark of the frame.

The heavyweight bout was part of the main card of Bellator 175, which took place at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., near Chicago. The main card aired on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie.

Gormley worked a kick early, then tried a right hand and baced away from one of Kharitonov’s rights. Kharitonov peppered a jab out there, but ate a stiff one from Gormley, too. Gormley tried a big right hand over the top that was just off the mark. When he put several jabs out there, Kharitonov nodded at him and asked him to keep coming forward. So Gormley did with jabs and solid rights, though Kharitonov stayed right with him.

Kharitonov landed a big right, but then Gormley answered back with a kick to the body and a several punch combination that had Kharitonov rocked. Gormley couldn’t put him away, though, and the fight went back to the center. Kharitonov started landing and coming forward, and as Gormley’s face started to appear marked up from the leather, in a blink the fight was over. Kharitonov landed a right hand to the jaw, and a right uppercut put Gormley unconscious on the canvas.

“It was my strategy – to be disciplined,” Kharitonov said through a translator. “My next fight, I’ll risk it more. I really want to fight for the (vacant) title.”
