Luther Season 5: Idris Elba Is “Back in London, Back in the Coat”

by Ray Flook
Credit: BBC America

London has one of its greatest protectors back, investigating the evils that the streets spew out. Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) took to Twitter on Thursday to let fans know that Detective John Luther was “back in London, back in the coat” – which means Elba is back to filming new episodes of BBC One‘s Luther. With a fifth season announced in June 2017, Jamie Payne (The Alienist, White Princess) has been tapped to direct all four episodes; with Elba, creator Neil Cross, Marcus Wilson, Hilary Salmon and Elizabeth Kilgarriff.

“We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do.” – Cross

Here’s a look a the video Elba posted to his Twitter account:

Dermot Crowley‘s DSU Martin Schenk is set to return for the fifth season, joining Michael Smiley‘s Benny Silver and Patrick Malahide‘s George Cornelius. Wunmi Mosaku will be joining the cast this season as new recruit Detective Sgt. Catherine Halliday. Having won a BAFTA in 2017 for her performance in BBC’s Damilola, Our Loved Boy, the actress can currently be seen in Channel 4’s Kiri and Netflix’s The End of the F—ing World.

“As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday [played by Black Mirror‘s Wunmi Mosaku] are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror. But, even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change John Luther forever.”

All the Glorious Science Fiction TV You Can (and Should) Watch This Year

by Mary Anne Butler

When we keep saying it’s going to be a strong year for science fiction television, there are some obvious reasons why. Sure, I’m going to include some not ‘hard’ sci-fi shows (like the superhero ones), it’s a seriously impressive lineup of watchable offerings in 2018.

I’m going to start with the series that just hit yesterday, Amazon’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.  Hailing from Ronald D. Moore and co, this 10 episode show is a collection of anthology-inspired self contained tales. Right now it’s not getting the best reviews in the world, and that’s a shame because it’s a really strong series.  Maybe it’s too dark for the average reviewer – don’t expect happy endings – but the scope and production values are through the roof.  The scripts are strong, the performances are stronger, and it was worth waiting for.

Let’s look at what else you can watch this year, shall we?

On Amazon:

Man In the High Castle will return for season 3 sometime during 2018, we’ll let you know when that date gets announced.

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, a little bit Outer Limits and a little bit Twilight Zone, this one season (so far) series has everything Dick fans could want in a anthology series. It hit Amazon on January 11th.

Credit: Netflix

On Netflix:

Travelers season 2, kind of like Sliders for adults but more along the lines of 12 Monkeys meets The Matrix, just with less killer robots (so far). Season 2 hit the streaming service on January 2nd, so watch both.

Altered Carbon, based on a book series by Richard Morgan.  Although I CANNOT BREAK embargo- do not miss this.  Seriously.  This hits on February 2nd.

Lost In Space.  Admittedly, I completely and utterly forgot this was happening, but it is. Parker Posey is playing Dr. Smith, and Toby Stephens (Black Sails) is playing John Robinson. Expect this one sometime in May of 2018.

Black Mirror technically came back in December of 2017, but after the holidays is sometimes the better for watching stuff like this.

Sense8 gets to finish it’s story with a ‘season 3’ 2 hour film, and is due to hit sometime in 2018.

The OA got picked up for a second season, which starts filming this month, and is expected sometime later in 2018 (even though we wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t til 2019).

Credit: Hulu

On Hulu:

Hard Sun, a British series kind of like if The X-Files was done on a premium cable network with hyper violence and stuff.  Apparently the world only has 5 years before it ends, and the show asks the moral quandary of if people should be told or not.  BBC hasn’t said if there was going to be another season or not. Hard Sun arrived on January 6th.

While maybe it wasn’t the best time for Future Man to air what with it’s brand of dude humor, it got picked up for a second season that’s due out sometime (theoretically) in 2018.

The Handmaid’s Tale comes back to Hulu in April of 2018 for it’s second season.

On FOX:

The X-Files returned to FOX for it’s eleventh season on January 7th 2018 and has 6 episodes scheduled.  We’ve talked a lot about this series, and it’s a seriously mixed bag.

The Orville is set to come back (eventually) in possibly 2019, as Seth MacFarlane is looking at an ambitious 22 episode order for their second season.

The Gifted was renewed for a second season, but we won’t be getting that until 2019 at the least since the season 1 finale airs on January 15th 2017.

On TNT:

The Last Ship comes back sometime in summer of 2018 for a 10 episode fifth season which started filming immediately following the end of season four.

On NBC:

Timeless is one of those special stories where it was reported canceled, only to have the network reverse their position in three days and announce a 10 episode second season was being ordered for a 2018 air date that still hasn’t been announced yet.

On Disney XD:

Star Wars Rebels is supposedly due back for it’s final season this year, but we’ve not heard a peep from Dave Filoni about when that may be yet.

On FX:

Legion should be coming back for it’s second season of 10 episodes sometime in April of 2018.

American Horror Story is due back for it’s eighth season, theoretically sometime in 2018.

On SyFy:

The Expanse returns on for it’s third season sometime later in 2018.

Killjoys got picked up for a two final seasons, 4 & 5, with s4 airing later this year in 2018.

Channel Zero was picked up for a third season, which is due to hit on February 7th 2018.

12 Monkeys was picked up for a fourth and final season, which is set to air on May 19th 2018.

Wynonna Earp was picked up for a third season by both SyFy AND Space, it’s expected to hit sometime in 2018.

The Magicians came back on January 10th to SyFy for the premiere of their third season.

Krypton (which yes is totally superhero genre but will be hardbase sci-fi) is premiering for it’s first season on March 21st 2018.

Z Nation comes back for it’s hilarious zombie-killing fifth season sometime in 2018.

Van Helsing was renewed for a third season, but won’t be airing (reportedly) until October of 2019.

On AMC:

Humans (which is a Channel 4 UK show) got picked up for a third season, set to air in 2018.

On HBO:

Westworld is coming back to HBO sometime in the spring of this year, theories are it’ll take over the previous release date in mid-to-late April that Game of Thrones used to have.

On BBC:

Doctor Who is tentatively set to air on BBC sometime in 2018, featuring the new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker who was introduced in 2017’s Christmas Special which also signaled the end of Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi‘s time on the series.

On USA Network:

The Colony was renewed last year for a third season, moving the production from LA to Vancouver.  It’s due sometime in the fall in 2018.

The CW:

iZombie got picked up for it’s third season which is due on February 26th 2018.

Other Streaming Services:

Stargate Origins premieres on February 18th 2018 on the all new Stargate Command website.

Star Trek Discovery came back for the back-half of their first season on CBS All Access on January 7th 2018, and draws pretty good ratings despite creating bigger-than-JJ riffs in the fandom.

***

Keep an eye out for what superhero shows are returning (or premiering) in 2018 when we publish that guide soon.

What shows are on your must-see in 2018 list?

You Will Believe a White Man Can Lean: Neil Patrick Harris Takes on MJ

by Dan Wickline

Michael Jackson was one of the greatest performers of our time. His music combined with his dance moves well earned him the title of King of Pop. And one of his most amazing moves was ‘the lean’ from the video for Smooth Criminal. While repeatedly asking Annie if she was okay, Jackson performed an almost gravity-defying move that became synonymous with the song. The white suit, white fedora, and thin white tie along with that move have become iconic. And in an upcoming episode of Lip Sync Battle that is a celebration of Jackson’s career, Singer/actor Neil Patrick Harris was tasked with performing the song Smooth Criminal.

Michael Jackson

They gave him the white suit, the white fedora, and the skinny white tie. But could NPH pull off the lean? If you go online, you can find videos that show the supposed secret to the move, but even if that’s true, it’s not something just anyone can do. I’d still fall on my face and twist my ankle if I tried. As for NPH, did he bring the smooth? Watch the video below to find out for yourself.

This, of course, airs on the Paramount Network (formerly Spike).

MoviePass Announces MoviePass Ventures to Acquire, Distribute Films

by Ray Flook
moviepass ventures acquire movies
Credit: MoviePass

In what seems like an altered version of the old cliche, “…but what I really want to do is direct,” MoviePass is looking to go from offering you discounted tickets for the movies you want to see to – hopefully – giving you the movies you want to see directly. Looking to make a big impact during the early days of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the subscription service announced that it was creating MoviePass Ventures, a subsidiary that will co-acquire films with film distributors.

While specific details on MoviePass Ventures are still unknown, the plan is for acquired films to be made available across a series of platforms, including streaming, on-demand and DVD/Blu-ray. The announcement and initial roll-out coincide with a day of pitch meetings with indie players; and panels with Elijah Wood, producer Daniel Noah, producer Lisa Whalen and MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe.

In a statement announcing the move, Lowe stated that the time had come for MoviePass to not only boost box office film attendance but also enjoy some of the profits from it: “It’s only natural for us to double down and want to play alongside [distributors] – and share in the upside.”

For Lowe, MoviePass’ move into providing original content is just a natural evolution that he’s seen happen at other services such as Netflix. So far, “change” has seemed to work for the service: after being purchased by data analytics firm Helios and Matheson, MoviePass restructured its business plan and dramatically reduced the monthly membership fee from $50 to $9.95. To say that had an impact on the service’s subscription rates would be an understatement: in 2016, there were 20,000 subscribers before the change; currently, there are more than 1.5 million subscribers.

Which isn’t to say that MoviePass doesn’t have it’s problems, with the biggest and most obvious one being that it’s currently not making money – and that’s a problem. The service pays full price to theaters for tickets (which can average $15 per in cities like NYC), and then subsidizes a large chunk of the cost to be able to offer discounted rates. MoviePass is depending on the accuracy of its analytics to establish a strong market share and the value of its customer data to offset costs. To that end, MoviePass is hiring Natasha Mulla as chief marketing officer to engage customers in cheaper-ticket markets like Dallas and Nashville as a way to help reduce ticket prices for consumers in higher-cost markets.

One other sticking point that MoviePass must also overcome: push-back from some of the major theater chains. AMC has minced words when it comes to their criticism of the service, calling into question its entire business model and predicting its demise.

Nick Frost and Simon Pegg Ghost-Hunter Comedy Series “Truth Seekers” Happening

by Mary Anne Butler

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are no strangers to the supernatural, nor to the comedy genre.  Last year the pair launched their own production company, Stolen Picture, and announced their plans to venture into additional content, such as a new tv series.

Editorial credit: DFree Shutterstock.com

The first item that we’ll see from Stolen Picture will be a film called Slaughterhouse Rulez, directed by Crispian Mills and currently in post production.  Pegg said the film is very satirical, very much about the U.K. selling itself off,  and that “it’s about fracking as well.”

The two are always busy- Pegg will be in Ready Player One out in March (he’s also currently filming MI: 6) and Nick can be seen in Into The Badlands on TBS and Tomb Raider opening in March.

“I’d rather have a lot less money and make a film or a TV series and have a great time doing it than put it through a million processes and people you don’t know and you don’t respect creatively. That’s the trade off,” Nick Frost said.

There is also a second film in the planning stages, about a fading double act who haven’t spoken for decades but reunite one last time. “We’d like to do it as a two-hander and make it on a very low budget,” says Pegg. “We’ve had the idea for a long time, and we’re going to write an outline and then improvise and make something, which is far looser than when we work with Edgar…where every transition is so precise.”

The other bit of news is a tv series called Truth Seekers that is currently being shopped around for distribution, even though they are backed by Sony Pictures Television.  This would maybe mean it would find a home on STARZ, but it’s too soon to tell.

Pegg said of Truth Seekers:

“Each episode is going to be an adventure, a potential haunting or something. It’ll start as a very parochial idea, a very small business venture for these people, but it will expand as the series goes on to be something far more global. It’s a language everyone understands, the mystery of the unknown. ‘Shaun of the Dead’ was a very parochial story set in North London and somehow it managed to get this global reach because everyone understands the language of zombie movies.”

Sony Pictures Television President of International Production Wayne Garvie said of the show- “Despite being very British, in terms of their sense of humor and perspective on the world, they have created content that has been lapped up around the world. Whether as actors, writers, producers, or even directors they have a constituency around the world they reach out to and a real bedrock of support and love in Britain.”

We’ll let you know if Truth Seekers gets picked up to series, and keep you updated on Stolen Picture plans.

You May Be Getting A New NBA Jam Game From Microsoft

by Gavin Sheehan

For a specific generation of gamers, there is only ONE basketball game that means anything, and that’s NBA Jam made by Midway. An arcade classic back when the company was firing on all cylinders, the classic 2-on-2 game featured the two main franchise players of every team at the time in the early ’90s when basketball was exploding and Michael Jordan was basically an ambassador to the sport. The game threw out catchphrases for a lifetime like “Boomshakala” and “Put Up A Brick” that to this day I still hear players diss each other with on shots both in new NBA games and on the real court.

Now according to ESPN, it appears as if Microsoft will be resurrecting the franchise for the 25th anniversary, with the game’s original announcer Tim Kitzrow teasing that he’s working with the company on a new project. While titles like NBA 2K18 are the current gold standard of basketball games on modern consoles, seeing NBA Jam come back would be a major event that a lot of fans and gamers could probably get behind. Especially if they do legendary teams and current rosters going head-to-head as you and your pals can do local co-op or online play. But we’ll have to wait and see if anything gets announced, which would probably be at E3 or during the NBA finals if they do.

Prime Gives Us a First Look at Britannia with David Morrissey and Kelly Reilly

by Dan Wickline

Prime has released a new trailer for Britannia, a British historical period drama from Jez Butterworth, Tom Butterworth, and James Richardson. The series will air on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland, and will be available on Amazon Prime Video in the US. The 10-part series stars Kelly Reilly, David Morrissey, Zoë Wanamaker, Liana Cornell and Stanley Weber. The series is the first co-production between Sky and Amazon Prime Video.

Britannia begins in 43AD as the Roman Army, determined and terrified in equal measure, returns to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia, a mysterious land ruled by warrior women and powerful druids who can channel the mysterious forces of the Underworld. Arch Celtic rivals Kerra and Antedia must face the Roman invasion led by Aulus Plautius as it cuts a swathe through the Celtic Resistance.

Britannia

Jez Butterworth is known for writing Edge of Tomorrow, Black Mass, and Spectre. He’s also been tapped for Maleficent 2 and for an upcoming live-action Cruella de Vil film.

It’s hard to get a feel for the series from the video, with a modern musical sound with some nice bass lines and shows some interesting comedic beats, but it also appears to have a bit of the supernatural to it.

Britannia premieres on Sky January 18th and on Amazon Prime January 26th.

Amazon Renews The Tick for Season 2; The City Rejoices

by Dan Wickline
Corey

I really enjoyed season 1.

The Tick lives to fight another day! Amazon has renewed quirky superhero comedy for a second season of 10 half-hour episodes. Production should begin later this year with the shows premiering in 2019.

Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Griffin Newman (Search Party) will both be back at The Tick and Arthur along with creator Ben Edlund, who debuted his character first in the pages of comic books and then on an animated series. This is the second live-action adaptation.

The series tells of a extremely powerful, yet somewhat clueless hero and his unwilling, unassuming sidekick in a universe where superheroes are the norm, but super villains are a bit of a joke. Except for The Terror (Jackie Earle Haley), who the world thought was dead. Also in the first season are: Valorie Curry, Brendan Hines, Yara Martinez, Scott Speiser, Michael Cerveris, John Pirkis and Alan Tudyk.

Edlund said of the renewal:

“I am so excited that Amazon wants to continue this wildly fruitful collaboration and that this amazing cast gets to stay together, and that we get to build this mythos further, wider, deeper, and taller. We got a good ball of mud spinning with the right tilt of axis, I’m very happy we have this opportunity to keep peopling it.”

Amazon will release the final six episodes of The Tick’s first season on February 23rd.

The Boys: Amazon Casts Five More for The Seven’s Roster

by Ray Flook
Corey

So excited for this one.

amazon

Amazon‘s new series The Boys just made a number of new additions to The Seven’s membership roster on Wednesday. Antony Starr (American Gothic), Dominique McElligott (The Last Tycoon), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Jessie T. Usher (Survivor’s Remorse) and Nathan Mitchell (iZombie) are set to join Jessica JonesErin Moriarty as leads in the streaming service’s adaptation of Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson‘s (Happy!) comic book series.

Created for series by Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and with Preacher‘s Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen set to direct, here’s an overview of the comic book series that was originally published from 2006-2012 from Wildstorm and Dynamite Entertainment.

boys amazon series seven cast

This is going to hurt! In a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, someone’s got to make sure the “supes” don’t get out of line. And someone will! Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother’s Milk, The Frenchman, and The Female are The Boys: A CIA-backed team of very dangerous people, each one dedicated to the struggle against the most dangerous force on Earth – superpower! Some superheroes have to be watched. Some have to be controlled. And some of them – sometimes – need to be taken out of the picture. That’s when you call in The Boys!

Starr has been tapped to play Homelander, leader of the main superhero team, The Seven; with McElligott playing Queen Maeve, a member of The Seven; Usher playing The Seven member, A-Train, a superhero faster than a speeding train. Rounding out the casting announcement are Crawford as The Seven member The Deep, an aquatic hero; and Mitchell as Black Noir, a masked superhero with fighting and Set martial arts skills.

Previously cast, Moriaty is set to play Starlight aka Annie, a young woman with superhero powers who can make lightning bolts flash from her eyes. Her dream is to be a real superhero like the famous Seven.

Sony Pictures TV Studios and Amazon are set to co-produce the series, with Neal H. Moritz’s Original Films.

NBC Orders Gabrielle Union’s Bad Boys Spinoff Series to Pilot

by Ray Flook

Looks like NBC is interested in telling the further adventures of Bad Boys II‘s Special Agent Syd Burnett, with the network giving a formal pilot production green light to an as-yet-untitled movie spinoff series starring Gabrielle Union.

Credit: Kathy Hutchins / Shutterstock.com

Written by The Blacklist writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, the project would focus on Union’s Burnett, who was first seen in 2003’s Bad Boys II helping take down a Miami drug cartel. In the pilot and potential series, Burnett would be making a cross-country move from Miami to Los Angeles for a new life.

Here’s an overview of the project’s storyline:

“Free-spirited former DEA agent Burnett has a fresh start in her new job as an LAPD detective. She’s partnered with Nancy McKenna, a working mom who can’t help but look at Syd’s freedom with some grass-is-greener envy. These two have totally different lifestyles and approaches, but they both are at the top of their fields in this action-packed, character-driven procedural.”

A little background on Union’s character from Bad Boys II: Burnett is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and was romantically involved with her brother’s partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith).

The untitled project hails from Jerry Bruckheimer TV, Belgrad’s 2.0 Entertainment, Primary Wave and Sony TV. Margolis and Sonnier executive produce with Union, Belgrad, Jerry Bruckheimer TV’s Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed, as well as Primary Wave’s Jeff Gaspin.

In a 2014 interview with Esquire, Union discussed the “dorky” aspects of her personality:

“I’m obsessed with Words with Friends [a Scrabble-like game app]. I currently have 26 games going, which I play all day, every day. I have a few randoms, just because my friends weren’t playing fast enough because of, like, jobs and stuff… but you can play your turn! [Laughs] I have 10 games going with one stranger, and we’ve been playing for over a year.”

‘Everything Sucks!’ Teaser Trailer: Netflix’s New Series Goes to High School in 1996

by Ethan Anderton

Everything Sucks Trailer

There has been plenty of nostalgia and love for the 1980s in recent years, but now that we’re inching closer to 2020, it looks like the 1990s are about to enjoy their heyday in the nostalgic spotlight. At least that’s what Netflix is hoping with the teaser for a new high school series set in 1996.

Everything Sucks! is a new 10-episode half-hour dramedy created by Like Crazy writer Ben York Jones and Save the Date writer/director Michael Mohan that follows a group of teens from the AV and drama club as they deal with the trials and tribulations of going to Boring High School. No, seriously, that’s the name of the high school they go to in Boring, Oregon.

Get a first look at the teaser for the series below.

Everything Sucks Trailer

The teaser does a fine job of taking us back to the 1990s, complete with CD walkmans, pop-up video bubbles, and of course, Everclear’s “Everything to Everyone.” And it also introduces us to the cast of teens we’ll be hanging out with during this series. However, it doesn’t look like this is footage from the actual series, so here are some stills taken from the episodes:

Everything Sucks Trailer Everything Sucks Trailer Everything Sucks Trailer Everything Sucks Trailer

Since I was born in 1986, this series will ring pretty true to my life growing up. My town may not have actually been called Boring, but that was certainly the best way to describe it. And while we didn’t have an actual AV club, I was definitely very much involved in the TV production class and speech and debate, which came pretty close to crossing over with the drama club, so this series will likely be right up my alley. Here’s hoping that Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan can make this more than just artificial nostalgia.

Everything Sucks! stars Peyton Kennedy (American Fable, The Captive) and Jahi Winston (The New Edition Story) as students Kate Messner and Luke O’Neil, with Patch Darragh (Sully, Boardwalk Empire) and Claudine Nako (Grimm) as their respective parents.

The 90s high school experience: Desperate, heartfelt, awkward, exciting, and free of smartphones. Set in the real life town of Boring, Oregon in 1996, Everything Sucks! is a quirky, funny coming of age story that revolves around Boring High School’s A/V Club and Drama Club— two crews of nerdy-edgy outsiders, who join forces to make a movie and endure the purgatory known as high school.

Everything Sucks is coming to Netflix on February 16, 2018.

First Trailer for Netflix’s Blade Runner-esque Series Altered Carbon

by Bill Watters

We’d heard that Netflix had been working on a series adaptation of Richard K. Morgan’s Altered Carbon, and now Christmas has come early with their release of a first-look trailer. Set in a very Blade Runner-eque future, every human has a “cortical stack” which records all of their thoughts, experiences, and the essence of what is the individual. The effect of this is that when a body dies, the stack can be removed and placed in a new body and the person can continue theoretically perpetually.

Altered Carbon

Jeol Kinnaman stars as the series lead character, Takeshi Kovacs, a former agent who had been killed in an attack and his stack had been on ice for nearly 500 years. He is re-activated in a new body to help try to solve the mystery of the suicide of a super-long-lived and wealthy Laurens Bancroft (played by James Purefoy).  The apparent suicide was of Laurens himself, and his restored from backup (he is wealthy enough to take a backup of himself every 48 hours) self is in search of the answer of why he would have taken his own life.

Altered Carbon - Awakening

The series explores the notion of identity, the effect of what approaches a form of immortality on society and blends it with noir detective stories of the highest order.

Game of ThronesMiguel Sapochnik directed the first episode. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross are Executive Producers alongside Steve Blackman and Mythology Entertainment partners Brad Fischer and James Vanderbilt.

Altered Carbon will premiere on Netflix with a 10 episode series on February 2nd, 2018.

HBO 2018 Promo: Westworld, Sharp Objects – But No Game of Thrones?

by Ray Flook

Around the holiday season, there are three things you can depend on: more travelling to family and friends this year than you swore you would do last year; at least one present that will end up in your “regift” filing cabinet; and HBO reminding its subscribers just how much they’ve spent on programming the past year as they’re getting them pumped for the new year.

HBO isn’t looking to break that tradition any time soon, releasing their year-end promo that celebrates current/returning series such as Insecure, Westworld, Crashing and Silicon Valley; while offering fresh looks at new series/films Fahrenheit 451, Gillian Flynn’s Sharp ObjectsSuccession, Here and Now, and Barry.

Most interesting part of HBO’s promo? The absence of Game of Thrones‘s final season during the rundown of what’s coming up on the cable network in 2018. Check out the video for yourself here:

Some of the main takeaways from the promo reel include:

●  Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon are briefly shown in a clip from Fahrenheit 451:

“In a terrifying care-free future, a young man, Guy Montag, whose job as a fireman is to burn all books, questions his actions after meeting a young girl…and begins to rebel against society.”

●  Al Pacino is highlighted from the film Paterno, centering on the rise and fall of Penn State’s Joe Paterno: the winningest coach in college football history who became embroiled in Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal.

●  Following up on a teaser released earlier this week, HBO also released a new look at Bill Hader from the dark comedy Barry:

Barry centers on ex-Marine Barry who works as a low-rent hitman in the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied in his life, he begrudgingly travels to Los Angeles to kill someone and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theater scene.”

●  Viewers also were treated to a few short clips from Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson, Elizabeth Perkins and Chris Messina:

“Camille, a crime reporter fresh out of a psych hospital for her years of self-harm, returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Mo., to investigate the murders of two little girls. The assignment lands her back in her childhood home under the critical eye of picture-perfect small-town socialite Adora, which forces Camille to confront personal demons.”

●  Westworld‘s second season was given the prime end-of-promo spot, leaving fans speculating over the growing war between the park’s VIP and the Hosts after the ominous words spoken by Ed Harris‘s Man in Black: “You wanted me to play your game. I’m gonna burn it to the ground.”

Cool Stuff: Scratch Off the 100 Movies Bucket List Poster As You Watch Them

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

They have this at one of the Christmas kiosks at Bryant Park. Cool stuff.

Scratch-Off Movie Poster

A few months ago we featured a scratch-off poster that had 100 essential movies for you to scratch off as you watched them like a lottery ticket checklist. Now another one is available for you to check out with a slightly different list of movies to keep track of this time.

The 100 Movies Bucket List scratch-off poster isn’t quite as stylish as the other one we featured, but it’s still a fun way to keep track of this extensive list of movies that everyone should see. Check out the scratch-off movie poster below.

Here’s the latest scratch-off movie poster from the novelty retailer Firebox:

Scratch-Off Movie Poster

As you can see, there are classics like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Jaws and more. But they also include some must-see movies outside of the mainstream such as The Professional and Spirited Away. There’s a good chance most movie fans out there have seen a lot of these movies. So if anything, this is probably a great gift for an experienced cinephile to get one of their friends who needs to start watching more movies.

The only problem with this particular scratch-off movie poster is that it doesn’t yet ship to the United States. So if you’re looking to give it to someone this Christmas, you might want to go with the other option we highlighted from earlier this year. Both will make someone’s movie education a little more fun, and then they’ll have something to show off when they’re completely finished with the whole list.

‘You Were Never Really Here’ Gets a New Trailer Showing Joaquin Phoenix’s Brutal Performance

by Patrick Dane

You Were Never Really Here has been floating around for a little while now, getting praise and awards more or less where ever it turns up. The film is We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay‘s newest work, adapting Jonathan Ames book of the same name.

It’s also been a big one for Joaquin Phoenix, too, whose role as a man who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty to save abducted girls is getting quite a lot plaudits. He even won the Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for the role. Now we have a new trailer where you can get a glimpse of where that praise is coming from. It looks like this might be a pretty brutal and tough watch, but it most certainly also looks good. You can check out the new trailer here:

The film is out April 6th, 2018 in the US at select theatres.

Extreme Barbie Jeep Racing Is The Real Pinnacle Of Racing

by Stef Schrader on Black Flag, shared by Julie Muncy to io9

If there’s any one kind of racing that gets universal approval from the Jalopnik staff, it’s Extreme Barbie Jeep Racing. It’s the safety-third pastime of flinging yourself down a steep hill on a children’s ride-on, and the wipeouts are incredible. It’s truly racing for the people, and we love it so much.
