Legally Blind 97-year-old WW2 Veteran Creates Amazing Pixel Art With MS Paint

by Tom

97-year-old World War 2 veteran Hal Lasko spends most of his time behind a computer, creating amazing pixel art with ’95 Microsoft Paint. Hal is now legally blind, with wet macular degeneration causing weaker sight in the center of it’s field, and computer is the only tool that allows his to continue drawing today. Grandpa, as he is lovingly called by his family, used to work as a typographer, therefore his grandson Ryan knew he would love to get back to drawing.  While working on a computer, Hal  is able to magnify the images to the extent where he’s able to see them. Check out his his work, described as “a collision of pointillism and 8-Bit art“, and a very beautiful documentary by  Josh Bogdan below.

Man Removing Graffiti, Becomes Graffiti Himself

by Eugene

Street artist DS sure has a sense of humor. After snapping a photo of a guy removing his graffiti off a wall, he ironically turned the guy into his latest stencil piece. Can you imagine the look on the guy's face once he's realized that he's been graffitied onto the same wall?

Yes, Vaccines Work [Infographic]

by Francie Diep
Some numbers before and after the introduction of common childhood vaccines

Do vaccines really work? Over the past decade, some parents in the U.S., Canada and Europe have started refusing to give their kids the recommended childhood vaccinations. They worry about safety, believing vaccines may cause autism or other disorders. Denial that the vaccines have any benefit at all has been a part of this particular type of refusal. (Parents in other parts of the world oppose vaccines for other reasons.)

Although no vaccines are 100 percent effective, they can have a big impact on the health of a population. Toronto's public health department put together this visual of the rates at which Canadians got different infections before and after the advent of some common childhood vaccines.

You can learn more about studies of vaccine safety and efficacy with Popular Science's new guide.

12 foreign McDonald's menu items

by Thrillist

Everybody knows McDonald’s has some pretty crazy items in other countries (Vegemite McMuffin FTW!), but they’ve also got some pretty tasty items that you’d be crazy not to dive right into — and that they’re crazy for not selling here, because people would undoubtedly go crazy for them. Crazy. Here are the 12 best.

1. Prime Rib Burger, Israel

McDonald's burger

Sure, they make you serve in the military, but at least you can fill up after your 60mi morning run with a lineup of charcoal-grilled burgers made outta prime rib and rib meat patties. This is the Big New York, topped with whatever the hell Royal Sauce is.

2. Texan Burger, South Africa

McDonald's burger

South Africa’s Texan Burger has barbecue sauce on it, like many burgers actually from Texas. Unlike burgers actually from Texas, they punch it up with a hashbrown, making it the perfect brunch burger. Or excuse to have a burger at brunch.

3. Samurai Pork Burger, Thailand

McDonald's burger

You won’t feel like committing seppuku after eating this Thailand specialty: the Samurai Pork Burger jammed with teriyaki-glazed pork.

4. Bacon Potato Pie, Japan

McDonald's burger

If you’re in Japan and don’t like seafood, that’s totally cool, because there’s this thing called bacon potato pie. Those brilliant bastards took a pie crust, stuffed it with nothing but bacon and mashed potatoes, and deep-fried the lot of it.

5. Pizza McPuff, India

McDonald's burger

In India, you can get a friggin’ pizza Hot Pocket at Mickey D’s. They call it a Pizza McPuff, and it’s easy to eat while driving around in your Tata.

6. Nacho Jr, Finland

McDonald's burger

The fact that this is on a Finnish menu and not an American one is bewildering. Take a burger, load it down with tortilla chips, salsa, and sour cream, call it the Nacho Jr, and boom: the perfect American Tex-Mex-style burger, made fresh daily in Helsinki.

7. McVicky Tzatziki, Germany

McDonald's burger

The German McVicky Tzatziki comes with a healthy dose of cheese cubes, onions, and of course gyro meat. These countries are getting pretty confusing all of a sudden.

8. Deep-Fried Balls of Camembert, Ireland

McDonald's fried cheese

Leave it to Ireland to make the perfect fast food Guinness-accoutrement: deep-fried balls of Camembert.

9. Chicken Maharaja Mac, India

McDonald's burger

What do you do if you can’t decide between a McChicken and a Big Mac? Why, go to India, of course, where the Chicken Maharaja Mac is the best of both greasy worlds.

10. Black Diamond, Japan

McDonald's burger

Wait at least 45min before skiing expert-level slopes after eating Japan’s Black Diamond, which smothers Emmental cheese and grilled onions in an egg yolk and black truffle sauce.

11. Moutard Boeuf, France

McDonald's burger

You’ll never be able to pronounce it, so you might as well shove one in your face before you even try. It’s France’s Moutard Boeuf, for which they put a burger on a baguette, add a couple of potato cakes, top it with mustard, and call it done.

12. McKroket, Netherlands

McDonald's burger

Slotting somewhere below the decriminalization of soft drugs and above the sadly Oompa-Loompa-less Heineken brewery, this Dutch treat, called the McKroket, is essentially a beef ragout that’s breaded and fried, topped with a mustard sauce, and served in a bun. Pro Tip: Eat it with mayo-drenched Vlaamse frites.

31 Mapping Stereotypes From Around The World

by Ieva

London-based designer Yanko Tsvetkov decided to mock our simplified perceptions of the world by creating a series of infographical maps of the most popular national stereotypes. Instead of drawing the traditional geographical boarders of the countries, Yanko’s maps indicate how different nations see one another. Find your country in each map and let us know how accurate they are in the comments!

Striking Graffiti Birds by Brazilian Artist L7M

by linen

Luis Seven Martins, going by the L7m nickname, merges nature with urban art in his beautiful series of graffiti birds. Born in 1988, this young Brazilian artist had his first contact with a spray can when he was 13, and since then has been experimenting and trying out new combinations with materials like china ink, latex, pastel and acrylic. According to his profile, L7m is “identified by the simplicity of colors and free geometry, related to several issues, causing contradictions and uncomfortable feelings in the observers.” Luis also does some independent work for different advertising agencies, cultural centers, schools and such. Each of his works is a beautiful combination of something elegant and rough at the same time!

Units of Measure Calendar

by Randy

An intriguing calendar that shows the date by using units of measurements commonly used. Designed by the team at ACRE in Singapore, you can buy your own Unit of Measure Calendar poster. There are two editions, a blue and black version as well as a black and copper.

The idea of creating a calendar was always at the top of our heads. However, we needed an idea that was sound, that made sense. We went back to our roots for that big idea, and we stumbled upon the fact our agency is named after a unit of measure.

Things began to click into gear and the team worked to create a calendar that would highlight 12 units of measure . This brought a lot of symmetry to our design philosophy which melds sense and practicality together. This craft-centric calendar is designed to be practically functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

I do wish the high-resolution version was available to view online, but we can only see the gallery images.

Massive Dragon Skull Found Washed up on the Beach

by khz

This 40-foot long dragon skull was spotted washed up on the beaches of Dorset's Jurassic Coast in the UK for a promotional stunt to launch the 3rd season of Game of Thrones coming out on Blinkbox. BLINKBOX.

Oh... and did I mention that the dragon skull is real? Well it is. It is the most real dragon skull ever found on the beach by a small child. She is a Dragon Slayer and I drank all the mead.

Long Exposure Photos of Golden Waves by David Orias

by Ieva

David Orias takes stunning long-exposure photos of the sea that you could easily confuse for paintings on canvas: the series, titled Waves, were shot in the early mornings at the beaches of Southern California, and the sunlight colors the pictures in a truly surreal and magical way. “Southern California has its fire season and sometimes this creates conditions of eerie orange light in the morning as the sunlight is filtered and scattered by smoke particles. This creates unusual and to some viewers unrealistic colors. I take the baseline colors and work with them to create a fine art appeal,” says David.

You Won’t Believe These Rocks Are Pencil and Crayon Drawings

by Ieva

What looks like a gorgeous seashore of colored rocks in the water, are actually skillfully-made pencil drawings by Ester Roi! Based in Southern California, Italy-born artist also uses crayons and oil pastels, combining both drawing and painting as she works. The vibrantly-colored rocks in water has been one of her main objects for the last several years already: “I study them above and below the surface, and observe how their visual characteristics change and relate to each other. I relish the contrast between a solid rock above the surface and its restless reflection below,” she says. “Water transforms everything it touches: hard lines become soft, warm colors cool, solid shapes break down into parts. Realism evolves into abstraction and the ordinary becomes extraordinary.”

And extraordinary is just the word you wanna use when you see Ester’s work!

Artist Shows What the Night Sky Would Look Like If Cities Went Dark

by Ieva

If you live in a big city, clear starry sky must be a rare sight for you – however, photographer  Thierry Cohen gives us a chance to see what some of the biggest cities would look like if they went completely dark. In order to create his Darkened Cities photo series, Thierry would first shoot the sky where there was no pollution and you could see the stars clearly, and then he would capture the city in the day time. Merging the two pictures together gives you the final result – a bit ghostly, yet wildly romantic!
