What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

by Melanie Pinola

What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

Dear Lifehacker,
I really need a massage, but I'm confused by the dozens of different types to choose from. What's the difference between, like, a Swedish massage, a deep tissue massage, or a Shiatsu massage? How do I know which one to pick?

Signed,
Sore All Over

Dear Sore,
A good massage is truly a treat and offers many health benefits, but as you've noted, massage places tend to offer lots of options on their services menus. In fact, there are over 200 different massage techniques and types, all treating different needs and providing various benefits. Let's break it down. Here are nine of the most popular types of massages and when you might want to choose them.

Massages for Relaxation and Stress Relief

Some massages are more soothing than others, leaving you feeling like you've been wrapped in a cloud and the "reset" button pressed on your body.

Swedish Massage

What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

This is the most common type of massage therapy, and what many people are thinking about when they hear the word "massage" or try to give someone else or themselves a good massage. Swedish massage uses a combination of these basic movements:

  • Long, sweeping strokes (effleurage), usually used at the start and end of a massage
  • Muscle kneading and rolling (petrissage), where the muscles are worked on just like kneading dough
  • Friction, where deep pressure is applied to a particular spot with the thumb, fingertips, or knuckles
  • Rhythmic tapping (tapotement), fast percussion movements like chopping and even pounding. (About.com notes, however, that percussion techniques have fallen out of favor for Swedish massages because they're not relaxing—the way that karate chops to your naked, oiled body could be distracting)

Best for: An intro to massage, stress relief, relaxation, releasing cramped or tense muscles, couples massage

Hot Stone Massage

What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

During hot stone massage, your body is not only weighted down with hot, smooth stones, but the masseuse also uses the stones to massage your body. It's like being caressed by the smoothest (rollerball-like) hands, but also being scorched by them for a "Yeeooowwww!….Ahhhhh" effect. A hot stone massage is mostly relaxing, but it also is more invigorating than your run-of-the-mill massage, thanks to the almost-too-much heat bringing you back to focus on the moment instead of letting you drift off. The heat helps release the tension in your back and shoulders, mostly, so those muscles can be worked on more effectively.

Best for: "Centering" yourself, releasing very tense muscles, relaxation

Chair Massage

What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

You've probably seen these strange contraptions at conventions, the mall, nail parlors, and maybe even your office. Chair massages have you sitting face forward in a chair so the therapist can massage mostly your neck, shoulders, and back. The good thing is you don't have to take off your clothes or have oils slathered all over you. The bad thing is you don't get a thorough whole-body massage as you do with other methods, and, since this is often done in public places, it can be very distracting and not as relaxing. Depending on the massage therapist, however, a chair massage can really get the tension out of your upper body.

You might see other kinds of chair massages, like massage chairs in malls you put a few dollars in to sit in, but if you're going to spend money on that, you might as well buy a good massage pillow for home.

Best for: Quick massages when you've been walking all day, stress relief

Massages for Treating Pain and Specific Conditions

Traditional massages are great when you just need a little stress relief and relaxation. When you have knotted muscles, however, or have more specific ailments, more attentive techniques are required.

Deep Tissue Massage

As the name suggests, deep tissue massage applies deep pressure onto specific trouble points. It feels very much like someone is torturing you on purpose by pushing into your knotted muscle, and the massage can leave you feeling sore. It's not just more pressure all over your body, however (which would be true torture), it's very specific, methodical treatment. As Moyer Wellness explains:

Deep Tissue is a very specific massage treatment in which the therapist uses knuckles and elbow's to "strip out" muscle tissue as far down to the bone as possible. Sound invasive? It is! It is definitely not for everyone. However there are millions of people out there that would never have their treatment any other way. This modality can be helpful to the following people: athletes who are considerably harder on their bodies than the average person, people who are undergoing physical therapy to aid in the breakdown process of scar tissue, (AFTER PROPER HEALING FROM THE INJURY HAS OCCURED), or anyone who has very dense tissue and thus responds better to the work.

...It is very important to ALWAYS speak up and let your therapist know if you need the pressure to be corrected, (i.e. if you need them to lighten up because it is too deep, or to apply more because it is not deep enough). Most everyone needs more pressure in some areas and less in others. This occurs because muscle tissue that contains Trigger Points is more sensitive to pressure and can be tender to the touch.

This is not the kind of massage to ask for if you expect to feel relaxed during the therapy, and afterwards you might feel sore for a couple of days.

Best for: Treating stiff, painful trouble spots like the shoulder and neck

Trigger Point Massage

Like Deep Tissue Massage, Trigger Point Massage focuses on specific areas of the body, rather than massaging the whole body. In this technique, the therapist pinpoints exactly the "problem" muscle and coaxes it with deep pressure to relax. Massage chain Massage Envy explains:

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may reduce referral pain in the neck. The neck, now acting as a satellite trigger point, may then cause pain in the head. The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache.

Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. ... The results and benefits of trigger point massage are releasing constricted areas in the muscles thus alleviating pain. You can experience a significant decrease in pain after just one treatment. Receiving massage with trigger point therapy on a regular basis can help naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries.

Deep tissue and trigger point massages are very similar. The difference is that deep tissue massage uses various traditional massage techniques to work the tissue, whereas trigger point massage is literally looking to manipulate or press on that one point that relieves tension in an entire area (perhaps not even nearby). For both, consider this contraption, which is an invaluable tool for torturing soothing sore muscles all over your body. This is a great guide on doing trigger point therapy for yourself.

Best for: Chronic muscle pain and tension

Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular therapy is a subset of trigger point massage. A highly trained therapist applies pressure to the areas where you have muscle spasms—muscles that are painful to the touch. WebMD explains:

Neuromuscular therapy is a form of soft tissue manipulation that aims to treat underlying causes of chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems. This medically oriented form of massage addresses trigger points (tender muscles points), circulation, nerve compression, postural issues, and biomechanical problems that can be caused by repetitive movement injuries.

Neuromuscular therapy will feel painful at first, but it should relax the muscle and help it get more oxygen and blood flow.

Best for: Treating injuries and issues like poor circulation or posture problems, lower back pain

Massages for Overall Health and Rejuvenation

While the massages above should all leave you feeling better, some specific types of massages may be better for an overall energy boost.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu (literally, "finger pressure") is an ancient technique from Japan. It combines gentle stretches with finger pressure to work on different pressure points. The idea is to fix imbalances in the flow of energy in your body. Although there's no concrete evidence of Shiatsu's use as a healing method, people who have had this massage still report stress and pain relief. About.com's Alternative Medicine site says:

A scientific explanation is that shiatsu calms an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which improves circulation, relieves stiff muscles, and alleviates stress.

Unlike other types of massage, you stay clothed during the treatment.

Best for: Ailments such as headaches, back pain, and lack of energy

Thai Massage

What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

Thai massage works your entire body. It's one of the most invigorating types of massages, as the therapist rigorously manipulates your body, moving it into yoga-like stretches. (It's sometimes referred to as "Yoga for the lazy".) The therapist uses every part of his or her body—hands, knees, legs, and feet—to not only stretch you but also apply pressure on your muscles and loosen your joints. You might even get walked on! This type of massage is both energizing and, at times, relaxing.

Best for: Improving energy, increased flexibility, overall health and well-being

Sports Massage

What's the Difference Between All These Types of Massages?

Finally, sports massage is designed specifically for the very physically active (whether you're a professional athlete or not). It combines Swedish, Shiatsu, and other techniques to concentrate on the areas that are related to your sport. Athletes often get sports massages to prepare for peak performance, prevent injury, and also treat injury. Sports Injury Clinic, which offers several demonstration videos, says:

The benefits and effects of sports massage include physical effects such as circulating blood and lymphatic fluids as well as stretching muscle tissue and breaking down scar tissue.

There are physiological effects such as reducing pain and relaxing muscles as well as psychological affects which include reducing anxiety levels.

Best for: Athletes

The massage types above are some of the most popular massages you can get, but there are many others. Regardless of the type of massage you opt for, be sure to tell your therapist which areas you especially need work on, whether you have any health issues, and, during the massage, how the pressure feels. When you find a therapist you like, you might want to book a standing appointment with him or her for pain and stress relief all year long.

EU court decides not to ruin the Internet

by Ben Zigterman
Hyperlink Copyright InfringementA European Union court ruled on Thursday that hyperlinks are not copyright infringement. In other words, the court decided not to ruin the Internet. In a case brought to our attention by TorrentFreak, the EU’s Court of Justice ruled in favor of Retriever Sverige AB, a service that collects links to free articles. Back in 2010, Swedish journalists were upset at Retriever for making their work public and felt they should be compensated. They lost the case, but appealed to the Stockholm District Court, which in turn asked the EU Court of Justice to decide. Fortunately, common sense prevailed, and as a result, so did the Web.

BBM Update Adds Voice Calls, Channels, Dropbox And Location Sharing For iOS And Android Users

by Darrell Etherington
bbm

A new update to the BBM apps for iOS and Android add a laundry list of anticipated features to the messaging platform. BBM Voice makes its first appearance on the Android and iPhone clients, allowing users to make direct voice calls to their BBM contacts via either Wi-Fi or cellular networks; BBM Channels provide message-board style group interactions around a particular topic, theme or personality; plus, users can now share location information with contacts via Glympse, and Dropbox files.

Also new is one-click sharing, which makes it easier for users to send photos, documents, voice messages and other kinds of content to their network connections. The Glympse-powered location sharing lets people send their real-time current whereabouts, complete with timed data availability set by the user, so that you can let a business contact know where you are relative to their location if you’re running behind, but take away that access after say 30 minutes. There’s also expanded emoticon support, with 100 new ones added to help users perfectly convey their feelings without the need for pesky, hard to spell words.

  2. samsungs4_bbm_quick_share_sendfile_eng

  3. samsungs4_bbm_quick_share_voicenote_eng

  4. samsungs4_bbm_quick_share_glympse_send_eng

Many of these features are inherited from the existing set of capabilities of the native BlackBerry OS version of BBM, and were promised back when the app launched on iOS and Android last year. But they’re very welcome additions, and should help provide the network with value add incentives to draw in new users. BBM recently lost its top executive leader as Andrew Bocking departed BlackBerry, and now it seems likely he was hanging around to make sure this update shipped before taking his leave.

BBM 2.0 shipping is a good sign for the messaging client, but its progress in terms of user growth since launch remains a bit of a question mark. These updates at least show that third-party platform development continues to be a priority for the company. Under recent executive shifts, BBM now falls under the purview of the Global Enterprise Solutions, division, so we’ll see how that affects consumer product efforts.

Sochi critic sentenced to three years in prison colony

by Amar Toor

A prominent Russian environmentalist and outspoken critic of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi was sentenced to three years in a prison colony this week, sparking outrage from human rights activists. As the New York Times reports, an appeals court in the city of Krasnodar handed down the sentence on Wednesday, upholding a ruling from a lower court in December. The activist, Yevgeny Vitishko, has been ordered to serve time in a penal colony for violating the terms of a suspended sentence handed down in 2012.

Vitishko had co-authored a report on the environmental damage caused by preparations for the Winter Olympics. He and his colleagues from the Environmental Watch of the North Caucasus were planning to present their findings at a...

Rovio teases 'Angry Birds Stella' spin-off

by Andrew Webster

Fresh off a trip to the go kart track, Rovio has announced the newest entry in its flagship franchise — Angry Birds Stella. Few details are available right now (including just what kind of game it will be or what platforms it's for), but Stella appears to be aimed specifically at young girls, and it stars the titular pink bird from previous games. "Angry Birds Stella is breaking the mold by introducing strong, passionate characters who really stand for something, while adding plenty of action and reality into the mix," Rovio CEO Mikael Hed says.

The developer says that the game "is all about inspiration, empowerment, and other real issues," without getting into specifics. Like most of the recent Angry Birds games, Stella will...

America! We’re #46! We’re #46!

by Uncle Dave

The United States, due to an “overly broad and abusive interpretation of national security needs,” fell below El Salvador and Romania in a world press freedom ranking released Wednesday.

The US fell 13 positions to 46th place in this year’s World Press Freedom Index, produced since 2002 by the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders. The organization said the main reason the US dropped so far in the rankings was because of its dogged efforts to “track down whistleblowers and the sources of leaks.”

“The trial of and conviction of Private Bradley Manning and the pursuit of NSA analyst Edward Snowden were warnings to all those thinking of assisting in the disclosure of sensitive information that would clearly be in the public interest,” the report reads.

“The whistleblower is the enemy,” it adds.

Avoid Computer-Caused Neck and Shoulder Strain with a Split Keyboard

by Melanie Pinola

Avoid Computer-Caused Neck and Shoulder Strain with a Split Keyboard

It's not just sitting all day in front of a computer that's killing you, it's how poorly designed, ergonomics-wise, computers can be for our bodies. Friend of Lifehacker David Kadavy says a split keyboard may be the biggest thing since the standing desk. Here's how to tell if a split keyboard is for you.

First, the facts. As the Design for Hackers author notes, office workers tend to have neck and upper back problems, usually because of tension in the trapezius muscles (which support outstretched arms). A big source of that tension is how we use standard keyboards—with our hands close together, stretched out from our bodies, and our shoulders subsequently pushed forward.

A split keyboard reduces that tension because you can more comfortably keep your arms by your sides (not to mention, position it perfectly for your needs). Here's Kadavy's experiment to see if a 100% split keyboard is for you:

Try this experiment:

  • Put the fingers of your left hand on your right shoulder, where your shoulder meets your chest.
  • Now, try putting your right hand on your keyboard, as if you were typing.
  • Now, move your right hand to the right, outside your keyboard.
  • Now that your right arm has cleared your body, you can have your hand closer to your body. Slide your right hand toward yourself a bit.
Did you feel how much your shoulder and chest moved? Did it feel more natural and comfortable to you? If so, you might like a "truly split" keyboard

Check out the full post below for keyboard suggestions, more convincing arguments, and additional ergonomic advice.

(Also, if you already have that dreaded computer hunch, try this 30-second solution.)

Oyster lands Disney for its subscription ebook service

    by Valentina Palladino

The ebook subscription service Oyster just caught the biggest shark in kids entertainment: Disney. The company announced on its blog that it's partnering with Disney Publishing and is rolling out a new children's category. Live today on Oyster's mobile apps, the new category means subscribers will have unlimited access to 100 titles from Disney that include properties like Toy Story, Cars, and the Disney Princesses.

Oyster CEO Eric Stromberg told GigaOm that there are over 10,000 children's books in its library of over 100,000 in-copyright ebooks. Some of the titles perviously listed under the Young Adult category, like Curious George and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, have been moved into the children's category....

    The Old Reader Premium!

We are thrilled to announce that we are rolling out Premium accounts for The Old Reader. Since taking over the application in August we’ve made tremendous strides to improve the dependability and speed of the application. We’ve also begun the process of building and releasing heavily requested features and have worked diligently on user support. We believe The Old Reader is now truly a world-class application!

Our next goal is to ensure the long term financial viability of The Old Reader. Hosting, development, and support are not inexpensive and while it’s never been our goal to get rich off of this application, long term sustainability and growth will require revenue. So we explored several models for generating revenues including a premium offering and advertising. In the end, we’d like to avoid advertising as we feel it’s too invasive and runs counter to our strong belief in the open web. So we started working on a premium offering that would allow 90% of our users to continue on with a free account that is largely unchanged from what they are using today.

What will you get with The Old Reader Premium?
    - Full-text search
    - Faster feed refresh times
    - Up to 500 Subscriptions
    - 6 months of post storage
    - Instapaper and Readability integration
    - Early access to new features

    What will it cost?
The Old Reader Premium will cost $3/month or $30/year. However, for the next 2 weeks (or up to 5,000 accounts) we’ll be offering the service for $2/month or $20/year and we will lock you into that price for a minimum of the next 2 years. This is our way of saying thanks to our existing users and hopefully getting the Premium service off to a great start.

    Do I have to upgrade?
No! 90% of our users can continue on for free just as they are today. However, users with more than 100 feeds will need to upgrade to premium. Otherwise, all functionality will remain available to free accounts. We also offer a 2 week trial period for the premium service and will even allow that trial period to get extended for those still interested in moving to Premium.

We hope you are as excited about TOR Premium as we are. It’s a great value for a service that we know our users will love. Thanks for continuing to support us and thanks for using The Old Reader!

Go for Android parent company may be set to acquire GetJar

    by Jerry Hildenbrand

    GetJar

Purported deal to be worth over $50 million

Sungy Mobile Limited, a China-based company behind the popular Go for Android apps, is reported to be buying out GetJar, one of the first app stores for mobile devices.

Sources have told Gigaom that the purchase price is over $50 million dollars, and expected to be announced next week.

Sungy Mobile is said to have realized the need to provide app discovery to their customers, which number upwards of 325 million, and absorbing GetJar — who has been doing apps and discovery since 2004 — is a great way to do it.

A quick look at the GetJar: Paid apps for free application in Google Play shows that Go for Android branding is already in place, so we're pretty sure these two companies have been talking to each other for quite a while.

There's no indication how, if at all, this will affect users of Go for Android apps. Signs point to a Go appstore, but it's possible they have other plans for their new GetJar purchase.

EU pushes for less US control of the internet amid outrage over NSA spying

    by Tom Warren

The EU is challenging US control of the internet today with fresh proposals aimed at decentralizing authority. While there have been concerns over US control for years, today’s proposals follow widespread shock over the US surveillance activities of the NSA. The EU appears to be playing to those concerns, suggesting that the US-centric model of internet governance needs to transition to a global one.

More global internet control brings its own concerns

The EU’s proposals call for more transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance about how the internet is managed and run. Russia, China, and other nations have pushed for changes that would transfer duties such as domain name allocation away from ICANN, the US nonprofit...

Google Voice Search Now Allows You To Make Calls Or Send Texts Based On Relationships With Contacts (Eg, "Call Mom")

    by David Ruddock

    unnamed (1)

On the official Google... Google+ page, Google announced today that the newest version of Search for Android will now allow you to call or text contacts merely by uttering their relationship to you.

For example, saying "call Mom" will now begin a telephone call to whichever contact you've marked as having that relationship to you. If you've merely put in "Mom" as a contact, Google will just call that. However, if you don't yet have a contact marked, an interface allowing you to select the person you want to associate with that relationship will then appear.

How to get your iCloud contacts onto your Android device

    by Richard Devine

Moving your contacts from your old iPhone need not be a chore with this handy guide

If you're just joining the Android world from a past life on iPhone, there are a number of things you might want to transfer to your new device. One of these is your contacts. Whereas on Android your contacts are backed up to your Google account automatically, Apple has iCloud to carry out the same purpose. Luckily, there's a pretty straight forward method to move your address book over.

There are apps in the iOS App Store that will sync your contacts to your Google account for you, but the method we're going to look at here involves just a computer and a web browser.

    1. Point your browser at iCloud.com.
    2. Login with your Apple ID and password.
    3. Click on contacts
    4. In the bottom left, click on the settings cog (pictured right)
    5. Hit "Export vCard..." and note where the file saves.
    6. Head over to Google.com/contacts and log in with your Google credentials.
    7. Click "More" and select "Import"
    8. Select the vCard file you exported from iCloud saved on your computer
    9. Let Google do the rest!

From here, providing you have your Google account set to sync contacts on your phone (Settings>Accounts>Your Google Account) your phone will populate the People app with your previously iPhone residing address book.

As I mentioned above there are iOS apps that will do it for you, likewise similarly on Android. Motorola Migrate, for example, will move all your personal affects over from your iPhone if you've picked up a new Moto X or Moto G. But it's really straight forward, and the added bonus to doing it this way with your computer is that you retain a hard backup of your contacts list for yourself.

MegaSound Lets You Set Custom Notification Sounds for Each Android App

    by Alan Henry

MegaSound Lets You Set Custom Notification Sounds for Each Android App

Android: MegaSound is a free utility that lets you set custom notification sounds for each app on your phone. You can have one alert for an incoming SMS, another for a new email, another for Hangouts or WhatsApp, and so on. That way you can tell the app that wants your attention before you even look at your phone.

Once installed, you can add any apps you want MegaSound to control to its list, and then tap each one to select a custom song, alert sound, or other notification sound that you want to hear when that app wants your attention. MegaSound only works with apps that you add to its list, and it has no effect on other apps and sounds on your phone. That's the beauty of the app—it's remarkably easy to set up, and it gets the job done.

The only downside is that the app requires Android 4.3 to run, but if you have it, you're good to go. MegaSound is free at Google Play. If you're looking for ways to customize your system notifications, take a look at previously mentionedUltimate Sound Control.

Actress, diplomat and legendary child star Shirley Temple has died at home in Woodside, California. She was 85.

Born in California on the cusp of the talkies era, Temple was only three years old when she made her first screen appearance. Scouring dance schools for talented youngsters, Educational Pictures spotted the precociously talented Temple in January 1932 and signed her up for two series of short films. Baby Burlesks and Frolics Of Youth, which exploited her cherubic charm as a young daughter of a suburban family, led to her feature film debut in the otherwise long-forgotten Red-Haired Alibi later that year.

Fame and fortune soon followed, with Hollywood majors Universal, Paramount and Warner Bros. all vying for her talents. But it was a Fox picture, Bright Eyes, that offered her first topline role in 1934. With Rags the dog in close attendance, her newly orphaned girl Shirley Blake charmed audiences and melted hearts.

Within a year the six year-old Temple had won a special juvenile Oscar – she remains the youngest Oscar winner – and been earmarked for stardom by 20th Century Fox boss Darryl F. Zanuck. The mogul appointed a team of 19 writers specifically to develop roles for her, often as a benevolent angel or orphan, including Curly Top (1935), The Littlest Rebel (1935) and Stowaway (1935).

Her dancing, singing and acting skills made her one of the most popular screen presences of the 1930s. With adult roles harder to come by, she retired from filmmaking aged only 22 in 1950, leaving a legacy of 43 feature-length movies and countless shorts.

Temple’s achievements extended far beyond the screen. An unsuccessful run at Congress was compensated for by appointments as the US’s ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia in a diplomatic career that lasted five years. She also served on the board of large American corporations and several charities, including UNESCO and the National Wildlife Federation.

She was married twice, once aged 17 to an airman-turned-actor called John Agar with whom she appeared in two RKO pictures, and later to Charles Alden Black. She remained with Black until his death in 2005.

In a statement, her family said that she died surrounded by loved ones and caregivers. “We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and... our beloved mother, grandmother [and] great-grandmother.”

Surprise: Google Has Cleared Themer To Reenter The Play Store, Should Be Live In Mere Hours

    by Ryan Whitwam

-themer-beta-beta-1-22MyColorScreen waited a few days before announcing the circumstances of its removal from Google Play, and just like that, Google has let the developers know the app is good to go once again. The app should be live for everyone in a matter of hours.

2014-02-10 21_28_04-Themer Beta - Android Apps on Google Play

The removal was due to a DMCA complaint from Apple because of a theme that imitated iOS 7. The theme was removed, but the team was disheartened when no one at Google could give them any idea when the app would be restored – they feared the app could be in limbo for weeks.

Flappy Bird taken down to save us from ourselves, apparently

    by Richard Devine

Game designed to be played while relaxed became anything but says developer

The world's brief love affair with Flappy Bird may now be coming to an end thanks to its removal from Google Play and the iOS App Store, but the developer has now come clean about his reasons for doing so. Despite an apparent issue with intense media attention, developer Dong Nguyen has spoken to the folks at Forbes about just why the bird flaps no more.

Nguyen, it seems, was saving humanity from itself. He says he designed Flappy Bird to be played for a few minutes a time while relaxing. Of course, what we actually got was rage quits, swearing, and all manner of unhappiness with how damn hard it was. And yet everyone kept going back for more. It's this addictive nature which Nguyen claims was the final straw, and was the ultimate reason that the bird has flown away for ever. Not any issues with Nintendo.

Of course, if you really, really need that kind of game to play, there's a ton of clones and rip-offs already flooding the market to give you your fix. Or we could all just play something better, whatever.

Edward Snowden’s NSA Revelations Win Crunchie For Biggest Social Impact

    by Alex Wilhelm
    IMG_9968

Tonight at the Crunchies, Edward Snowden’s massive leak of NSA material won the Biggest Social Impact category.

Besting rivals like Code.org and CrowdTilt, Snowden’s successful efforts to demask the mass surveillance undertaken by the National Security Administration on both global and United States citizens has ignited a worldwide discussion surrounding privacy and the proper role of government.

That Snowden won, therefore, is no surprise. This is doubly true among the tech-heavy bent of Crunchies voters. The technology industry itself has been a target of the NSA’s work through programs like PRISM and others. MUSCULAR, an NSA effort to tap the data lines between Google datacenters on foreign soil, is just one example of how tech companies have come under the larger cloud of the state.

Naturally, Snowden wasn’t able to pick up the award in person.

Other groups nominated in the category were StopWatching.Us, a protest group against surveillance; Code.org, an effort to help kids learn to code; CrowdTilt, a group funding tool; and Watsi, a crowdfunding platform working to bring healthcare to the underprivileged.

The pace of revelations from the Snowden trove has slowed in recent weeks, but the impact of what he shook loose from the United States government has led to government inquiry, lawsuits and just, perhaps, real coming change.

Deep freeze: how scientists are resurrecting magnet technology to cool refrigerators

    by Valentina Palladino

Thanks to recent breakthroughs, the insides of our refrigerators could work very differently in the coming years. Scientists at GE are perfecting a method of transferring heat that uses magnets to achieve temperatures cold enough to freeze water.

The method is based off the magnetocaloric effect, which originated in the 1880s when German physicist Emil Warburg observed that certain metals have special properties in the presence of a magnetic field. In this case, metal alloys that become hot in the presence of a magnet and cold when removed are used to create a heat pump. This pump then moves heat from the colder environment of a refrigerator to a warmer environment, like your kitchen. This is similar to current refrigeration...

eBay Founder’s News Site, The Intercept, Launches With NSA Revelations

    by Gregory Ferenstein

eBay founder Pierre Omidyar revealed the first publication in his new media organization, First Look Media. “The Intercept” launched last night with revelations about the National Security Agency which had apparently been using the bulk collection of phone records to target terrorists with drones.

The Intercept’s explanatory introductory blog post explains that these types of revelatory stories will be a staple of the news site, keeping with its mission “to hold the most powerful governmental and corporate factions accountable.”

First Look Media made waves in the industry after it had announced that the journalist responsible for revealing the NSA’s controversial spy program, Glenn Greenwald, would be joining as editor. Greenwald and his partner on the original NSA leaks, Laura Poitras, are part of the new site’s small 12-person team.

The breakout story on the NSA drone program clearly establishes First Look Media as an opinionated news site, with unabashed opposition to security hawks. Their first story is sourced from whistleblower Edward Snowden and an anonymous former drone operator, who alleged that the NSA “often identifies targets based on controversial metadata analysis and cell-phone tracking technologies. Rather than confirming a target’s identity with operatives or informants on the ground, the CIA or the U.S. military then orders a strike based on the activity and location of the mobile phone a person is believed to be using.”

Greenwald, in his traditional civil liberties-championing tone, reminds readers that drone strikes have often inadvertently killed innocent civilians, which shows the perils of automated targeting weapons.

Omidyar is shelling out upwards of $250 million for First Look, the very same amount Amazon head Jeff Bezos paid for the Washington Post. It should be noted that Greenwald and Omidyar can only milk NSA leaks for so long, so it remains to be seen how a hard-hitting media site can reach financial viability over the long-term. At least for today, they’ll be making news and that’s a (very) good start.

Rumor: Google To Begin Forcing OEMs To Certify Android Devices With A Recent OS Version If They Want Google Apps

    by David Ruddock

    thumb

Every so often, something shows up in the Android Police tip box that seems just a little too wild to be true. Such was the case with the information that led us to publish this story. After all, if someone simply claimed that Google was forcing device OEMs to use up-to-date software in order to get access to Google Mobile Services, you'd probably find such an allegation dubious at best. Even if they included moderately convincing evidence that this was the case.

Pensacola bans sheltering from weather with blankets or newspapers

    by Cory Doctorow
This week, the city of Pensacola, FL will vote on an "anti-camping" ordinance that makes it a crime to protect yourself from the weather with a blanket or a newspaper. Its intention is to criminalize homeless people, but, of course, it also makes criminals out of anyone who holds a newspaper over her head in the rain.
