5 Local Music Players For Android That Deserve A Second Look

by Rita El Khoury

music-player-roundup-nexmusic

Google Play Music. Poweramp. Apollo Music Player. We certainly do not suffer from a lack of choice when it comes to local music playback on Android. A simple search for the terms "music player" on the Play Store is guaranteed to yield hundreds of alternatives, varying from the excellent to the good and often the mediocre. However, in a sea of notoriously powerful (like Poweramp, GoneMAD, AIMP, Neutron) or familiar (like DoubleTwist, Apollon7 player) apps, hide a few that do something different. This is a selection of 5 such apps.

How to Install Free, Effective Antivirus Software (for Beginners)

by Whitson Gordon

How to Install Free, Effective Antivirus Software (for Beginners)

Anyone running a Windows computer knows how important it is to have good anti-virus software—but you don't need to pay for good protection! If someone you know still doesn't have anti-virus software running, here's a quick guide you can send them to help them set it up.

This guide was originally published in 2011, but our recommendations have changed since then. Microsoft Security Essentials, our previous favorite, is no longer adequately rated by most antivirus tests. If you're an advanced user, Avast is our personal favorite antivirus program, but it requires some configuration. For beginners, I can't recommend Bitdefender's Free Edition highly enough.

Note: This guide is for Windows users. If you're on a Mac, we recommend installing Sophos instead.

Here's how to set up Bitdefender on your Windows PC:

  1. Head over to the Bitdefender's Free Edition home page (not to be confused with their premium offering) and download the software. Double-click on the installer to begin the installation process.
  2. Follow the wizard to install the software. If it asks you to remove your existing antivirus software, go ahead and do so—it's generally not advisable to run two antivirus programs at once. Accept the terms and agreements when prompted. All of the other default settings will be fine.
  3. During the installation process, Bitdefender will run an initial scan to make sure your system is clean.
  4. When it's finished scanning and installing, you'll have an option to create a Bitdefender account. Most antivirus programs require you to register (for free) within 30 days to continue using the program, so you might as well do it now. Click the "Create a new account" link, set it up, and log in when you're done.

From now on, you should see a little Bitdefender "B" icon in your system tray—that means Bitdefender is running in the background, monitoring your computer for any viruses that may come your way. Bitdefender doesn't have many options, which makes it incredibly simple: just leave the "Virus Shield" and "Auto Scan" options on and you should be well protected.

How to Install Free, Effective Antivirus Software (for Beginners)

In many cases, Bitdefender will prevent you from visiting a web site if it detects malware on the page. If you ever do get an infected file on your system, Bitdefender will automatically quarantine it. You can see your quarantined items by clicking Bitdefender's icon in your system tray and clicking the "Show Files" button under the "Quarantine" section. From there, you can use the buttons on the right to delete the file, or—if you know it isn't a malicious file—restore it.

Remember, good anti-virus software is important, but it's even more important to browse the web safely. The best way to avoid viruses is to make sure you don't download them in the first place. Don't click on anything that claims you have a virus unless it's coming from Bitdefender itself. Don't click on any suspicious Facebook posts, and don't click on suspicious email links. If you get an email from ebay.com, hover your cursor over the link and look at the bottom of your screen to make sure it actually goes to www.ebay.com—if it goes somewhere else, it's probably going to harm your computer.

Hacking diabetes: the open artificial pancreas project

by Cory Doctorow

Sulka writes, "Over the last two years, several people with type 1 diabetes have decided they're not satisfied with the speed of development to technical solutions for managing diabetes. This has spawned several projects such as Nightscout, enabling cloud sharing of blood glucose data (especially crucial for parents with small children), and TidePool, which is working to better manage diabetes data in the cloud." UK leads Europe in electric car growth

by James Vincent

Europe's interest in electric cars is slowly growing, with registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles up 36.6 percent last year. Of the major EU markets, the UK saw the biggest growth, with registrations up a massive 300 percent. The UKwas followed by Germany (up 70 percent) and France (up 30 percent). Interest across the continent was split fairly evenly between hybrid vehicles (36,836) and all-electric cars (38,495), with the total number of registrations representing just 0.6 percent of the overall market. This is proportionally similar to the US, where concrete data isn't available but estimates put electric car sales at around 119,710 in 2014 — just over 0.7 percent of the market.

Tax incentives for electric cars are having...

British web surveillance violated human rights, court rules

by Amar Toor

Britain's GCHQ violated human rights by accessing intelligence from the NSA's mass surveillance programs, a UK court ruled today, though the agency is now considered compliant after disclosing details of the arrangement late last year. In a ruling handed down Friday morning, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) said the GCHQ, Britain's NSA-equivalent, violated rights to privacy and free speech under an intelligence sharing arrangement that allowed it to access data from the NSA's PRISM and upstream surveillance programs.

The IPT is the only court with the authority to oversee the GCHQ and Britain's other intelligence services. This marks the first time in its 15-year history that the tribunal has ruled against an intelligence and...

26 Speed Busting Fast Shutter Speed Images

by Darlene Hildebrandt

Last week we saw some ethereal and mysterious long exposure photos. Now let’s go the opposite way and look at some images there would not be possible without fast shutter speeds (with a couple that have some help using flash to freeze motion too).

Images at either end of the shutter speed scale give us a chance to capture life in an altered state; one we cannot see with our eyes. Long exposures blur things beyond recognition and add mystery. Short exposures freeze things in time and space and capture literally a millisecond of time in an image.

Add flash and you can stop bullets, speeding arrows and more. Enjoy the world of high speed photography:

Twitter's user growth has stalled, but its business keeps improving

by Ben Popper

The evolution of Twitter over the last two years has been the opposite of what most expected before the startup went public. Instead of growing to a billion users without much money to show for it, the company's user growth has stalled out while its revenue has boomed. Its inability to keep pace with the size of rivals like Facebook and even Instagram has spurred rumors that CEO Dick Costolo will be forced out. To keep employees calm, Twitter executives have reportedly restricted access to crucial statistics, like the number of monthly active users. Oh, and its inability to deal with rampant abuse on the platform is causing core users to abandon ship.

RIP RadioShack: The Iconic Electronics Retailer Files For Bankruptcy, Sprint To Move Into 1750 Of Its Retail Locations

by David Ruddock

nexusae0_Radio-Shack-Stacked-logo-0111

Today marks the end of an era in retail, as the iconic electronics chain RadioShack filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, weeks after a final warning from the NYSE that its stock would be delisted for falling below market capitalization requirements. While I was too young to really know RadioShack in its heyday, the company that got its start on mail-order ham radio gear in the 1920s, there probably aren't too many people in America who haven't at least walked into one.

Mattel and Google are announcing… something… on Feb. 13

by Derek Kessler

So on Feb. 13 in New York City, Mattel and Google are holding a joint "exclusive announcement and product debut" for… something. We honestly don't know what, and there's only so much we can divine from the classic View-Master styling of the invitation. Is it a Google Glass for kids? Google's child-friendly take on Microsoft Hololens? Ingress even more IRL? A not-cardboard version of Google Cardboard?

Dropbox's web client is now smart enough to open files directly in their native apps

by Nathan Ingraham

Dropbox hasn't radically changed its core product in a long time, instead relying on solid stability and a steady beat of incremental updates to make syncing your files easier. One such upgrade is starting to roll out today, and it should help keep files that are commonly shared and collaborated on in sync. The change itself is a simple one: when you're viewing your Dropbox files through a web browser, clicking on a file that is synced to the computer you're using will now give you the option to automatically open it in a native app rather than download the file to your desktop. From there, any changes you make to the file are of course synced through Dropbox.

Swatch will release a smartwatch this spring

by Sean O'Kane

Swiss watchmaker Swatch will launch a new smartwatch in the next two to three months, according to various reports. That would place the launch right alongside the April release window that Tim Cook outlined for the Apple Watch's release earlier this month. Details are scant, but a few of the watch's functions have already been made public. It will include "communication" abilities and applications compatible with Windows and Android. The watch will also be capable of making mobile payments, though right now the only known partners are Swiss grocery stores Migros and Coop.

But the feature that might give Swatch its biggest advantage is that the smartwatch won't have to be charged. Even well before its release, battery life is already a...

Kodak and Hollywood finalize deals to save movie film

by Sam Byford

Following a high-profile period of lobbying by directors such as Christoper Nolan and Quentin Tarantino, Kodak has secured agreements with movie studios to keep supplying them with motion picture film. Sony Pictures, Paramount, NBC Universal, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Disney will all continue as major customers of Kodak's film stock, guaranteeing the technology's future at the storied imaging company.

"Film has long been — and will remain — a vital part of our culture," Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke said in a statement. "With the support of the studios, we will continue to provide motion picture film, with its unparalleled richness and unique textures, to enable filmmakers to tell their stories and demonstrate their art." Kodak is...

BT is buying EE in $19 billion deal

by Rich McCormick

British telecoms giant BT has agreed to buy the UK's largest mobile carrier, EE, in a deal worth $19 billion (£12.5 billion). The deal means BT now has access to EE's 31 million customers, and the largest 4G customer base of any operator in Europe.

A deal between BT and either EE or O2, the UK's second-largest mobile carrier, has supossedly been on the cards for several months. In December, it was reported that the telecoms company would announce the takeover of one of the companies before the end of 2014. The delay also came with a rise in price — at the time, the deal was expected to be worth $15.2 billion (£10 billion).

Olympus Air is a wireless camera for your smartphone

by Sam Byford

Sony’s QX lens cameras, which wirelessly and physically attach to your smartphone, didn’t turn out to be all that great — performance was painfully slow, and at their price and size you might as well just carry a decent Wi-Fi-equipped compact camera. But Olympus seems to think there’s the germ of a good idea in there and has announced its take on the concept: Olympus Air.

Second Furious 7 trailer expands on the insanity of the first

by Vlad Savov

One of our favorite trailers from the Super Bowl has gotten an extended version today with the release of the second official Furious 7 promo. It features many of the same scenes that made us gawp, chuckle, and rejoice at the first one, but now fills a whole three minutes with extra action and awesomely cliched dialog. Jason Statham's the new vengeful villain that Dom and company have to face, and the stunts he forces them into performing are incredible in every sense of the word. And, oh yeah, there's a Rock Bottom through a glass table. Film escapism at its very finest.

Find the Best Women's Hairstyle for Your Face Shape

Women might have many more hairstyle options than men, but the same overall rules apply: It's best to pick the hairstyle that suits our faces the best. The images below should help you out.

If you have a very round face, for example, short hairstyles and ponytails will likely only make your face look rounder. A more flattering style would be long layers and/or bangs. Here's the graphic posted on Visual.ly by Karen Ferreira:

Whats the difference between Android malware, spyware, adware and a virus?

by Jerry Hildenbrand

These are all very different bad things that we hate equally

The terms malware, spyware and virus get thrown around a lot on the Internet. Usually, you'll find they get used interchangeably, and we all just nod in agreement because we understand that we're talking about things we don't want and would like to never see again. But the reality is that they are all very different animals.

We're talking a bit about Android antivirus apps (which really are designed to prevent malware and not viruses) this week, so we wanted to take a few minutes and talk about what each of these nasties really is.

Microsoft reportedly buys Sunrise, the best calendar app for iPhone and Android

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Microsoft has purchased Sunrise, the maker of one of the best — if not the very best — calendar apps for iOS and Androidaccording to TechCrunch. It reportedly paid at least $100 million for the company. Microsoft has recently been working to revamp its mobile apps and reach out to other platforms, and Sunrise will clearly play a big part in that. This is actually the second time now that Microsoft has scooped up one of the best iOS apps: it previously purchased Acompli and then rebranded it as Outlook. Just like that, Microsoft made Outlook one of the best email apps you can get.

Sunrise has not confirmed the acquisition, and there's no detail yet on what will happen to the app under Microsoft. Given that Microsoft doesn't have an...
