Breakfast of Catan [Pic]

by Geeks are Sexy

settlers-waffle-bar

These appropriately named Settlers of the Noms: Breakfast O Rama breakfast plates come from the people over at the Kitchen Overlord blog.

All three of these edible Settlers of Catan boards are meant for a leisurely brunch afternoon full of gaming goodness. The host should be able to put the boards together before anyone arrives and let friends nom off them all day. If you’re a really good host, you’ll leave a big bowl of waffle batter next to a waffle iron and let people make fresh ones (as I call it, “hotel style”) whenever they’re in the mood.

Raspberry Pi Tor proxy lets you take anonymity with you

by Mike Szczys

pi-tor-proxy

Your web traffic is being logged at many different levels. There are a few different options to re-implement your privacy (living off the grid excluded), and the Tor network has long been one of the best options. But what about when you’re away from you home setup? Adafruit has your back. They’ve posted a guide which will turn a Raspberry Pi into a portable Tor proxy.

The technique requires an Ethernet connection, but these are usually pretty easy to come by in hotels or relatives’ homes. A bit of work configuring the Linux network components will turn the RPi into a WiFi access point. Connect to it with your laptop or smartphone and you can browse like normal. The RPi will anonymize the IP address for all web traffic.

Leveraging the Tor network for privacy isn’t a new subject for us. We’ve looked at tor acks that go all the way back to the beginnings of Hackaday. The subject comes and goes but the hardware for it just keeps getting better!

Gene Wilder Trashes Tim Burton’s ‘Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’ Remake

by Vanessa Powers
D G

Good for him

Gene Wilder Trashes Tim Burton and his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 2005 remake

Gene Wilder has finally spoken out about the Charlie and The Chocolate Factory 2005 Tim Burton remake, and he absolutely hated it!

The original 1971 Willy Wonka has called Tim Burton’s remake an “insult” in a recent interview with Turner Classic Movies host, Robert Osbourne.

“I think it’s an insult.  It’s probably Warner Bros.’ insult,” Wilder said.

Gene Wilder dug the knife in even deeper, saying that the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 2005 remake was essentially a giant profit making scheme, and that there was no other reason to remake the film, according to Entertainment Weekly.com.

The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Candy Man wasn’t done there, slamming director Tim Burton, by saying that he doesn’t care for him or his work.

“I don’t care for that director.  He’s a talented man, but I don’t care for him doing stuff like he did,” Wilder stated.

There only thing Gene Wilder did seem to like about the 2005 film remake was actor, Johnny Depp, saying that he thought Depp was a good actor and that he liked him.

In a rare public appearance, the 80 year old Gene Wilder spoke to Rosbert Osbourne in order to promote his upcoming novel, Something To Remember You By, but also had a lot to say about Hollywood and his departure from acting, in addition to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake.

“After a while, [films] were so dirty.  Once in a while, there was a nice, good film, but not very many,” Wilder said.  ”If something comes along and it’s really good and I think I’d be good for it, I’d be happy to do it.  Not too many came along.  I mean, they came along, but I didn’t want to do them.  I didn’t want to do 3D, for instance.  I didn’t want to do ones that were just bombing and swearing.  If someone says, ‘Ah, go f*ck yourself,’ if it came from a meaningful place, I’d understand it.  But if you go to some movies, can’t they stop and talk once in a while?”

Inquisitr Readers: Were you a fan of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 2005 remake, or only the original 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?  Do you think Gene Wilder is right that the remake is an insult?

U.S. App Usage Peaks at Night (Flurry)
U.S. mobile app usage increases throughout the day, peaking between 6 and 10 p.m. Gaming still eats up the most time, but other app categories are starting to close the gap, particularly social networking and photo-sharing, and news and magazine consumption. Interestingly, Americans aged 25 to 34 play less games than other demographics. Instead, they overindex with fitness and music apps. Read >

Apple May Be Building a Phablet (Reuters)
Apple is looking at building iPhones with larger screens, ranging from 4.7 to 5.7 inches, according to suppliers. It is reportedly still exploring the release of cheaper models as well. If true, that represents a break with Apple's historic product strategy to meet the broader diversity of Samsung's offerings. Read >

‘True Detective’ Teaser: Harrelson and McConaughey Slowly Track a Killer

by Russ Fischer
D G

I predict yet another epic series from HBO!

true-detective-teaser

Cary Fukanaga‘s first feature, Sin Nombre, was a beautiful, effective drama, and his second, Jane Eyre, brought a compelling vision to the classic tale, even if it didn’t quite hit the mark. All told, Fukunaga is one of the more promising new directors to emerge in the last few years, and so his HBO crime drama True Detective is super-enticing.

The show stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as detectives on the trail of a killer in Louisiana. Fukunaga directs the eight episodes of the first season, which hits on 2014. Nic Pizzolatto scripted. The first teaser trailer is below. It doesn’t give up much about the two detectives and their decade-plus case. It does, however, tell you a lot about the tone of the series.

An EW preview features quotes from Pizzolatto about the show and describes ”pessimist Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and emotional family man Martin Hart (Harrelson)” saying that the tale begins with a set of murders in 1995 and flows forward for many years. “It’s more about the detectives than it is about the killer,” Pizzolatto says. “We trace both the case and the relationship [between the cops] and how they change — or don’t change — as the years progress.”

True Detective premieres in 2014 on HBO. I love this teaser, and the fact that laying ‘Jockey Full of Bourbon’ by Tom Waits over it would really help it mirror the opening of Jarmusch’s Down By Law.

New ‘Only God Forgives’ Theatrical Trailer

by Russ Fischer

OGF-big-header

Here’s a new theatrical trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn‘s second collaboration with Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives. The movie premiered at Cannes last month to decidedly mixed reactions. There were some of the famous Cannes boos (hey, some really great movies get booed at Cannes) and also some big fans of the movie’s extra-sylized action and nearly mute protagonist. (That would be Gosling.)

You’ll get a chance to form your own opinion soon, as the film has a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release set one month from now. Until then, check out a new trailer below.

I’m going to present this trailer without comment because, frankly, I’m trying to preserve as much of the chance to see this one cold as I can. The first trailer was enough, and since Austin has screenings next week, I can wait a few more days.

Only God Forgives opens in theaters and VOD on July 19. Yahoo has the trailer. Check out these two character posters, as well.

If you happen to be in New York this weekend stop by Art of the Brick, the upcoming solo show by artist Nathan Sawaya at the Discovery Times Square museum. The collection of LEGO sculptures is being billed as “the world’s biggest and most elaborate display of LEGO art ever and will feature brand-new, never-before-seen pieces by Sawaya.” The show opens tomorrow and runs through January 5th, 2014.

Side note: Sawaya is trying to get enough votes over on LEGO CUUSSOO to have one of his orignal artworks turned into an actual LEGO set. All imagery above courtesy Discovery Times Square. (via laughing squid)
