Why the Tomato Was Feared in Europe

by Miss Cellania
D G

Tomato plants do smell terrible

v

After tomato plants were taken back to Europe from the New World in the early 1500s, people in various places considered the fruit poisonous for the next two centuries. The reasoning behind the fear of tomatoes came from several sources:

1. Rich people ate tomatoes and then died. Their fancy pewter plates were later found to be the reason.

2. Scientists of the time classified the tomato as a deadly nightshade and a mandrake -both scary terms.

3. Tomato leaves smell awful, so one researcher pronounced the entire plant toxic.

4. Scary-looking worms infested tomato plants.

An article at Smithsonain's Food and Think blog explains each of these concerns, which lingered far into the 1800s, plus a bonus video containing a scene from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Link

Fez 2 not coming to Xbox because 'Microsoft won't let' it

by Andrew Yoon

Although Fez debuted on Xbox 360, developer Phil Fish has no plans to bring the recently-announced sequel to Microsoft platforms. When asked which platforms Fez 2 will appear on, he said: "not Xbox."

Fish has been vocal against Microsoft after the publisher made it difficult (and expensive) to release a crucial patch for his game. On PC, "the game would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us," Fish explained.

The lack of self-publishing, forced exclusivity (when publishing through Microsoft), and expensive title updates seem to have Fish steering clear of the platform. "With Microsoft they've made it painfully clear they don't want my ilk on their platform," Fish told Polygon. "I can't even self-publish there. Whereas on PS4, I can. It's that simple. Microsoft won't let me develop for their console. But Sony will."

Fish isn't the only high-profile indie developer to debut on Xbox and move onto a rival platform. Braid developer Jon Blow's new game The Witness is a PS4 console exclusive for many of the same reasons.

It's clear that Fez 2 will ship on PC, and it seems incredibly likely that PS4 will host the game as well, with Fish pointing out that "PS4 seems to be doing everything right." He added that "one is having a big love-in orgy and the other is doing yet another f-cking Minecraft port."

Super Mario Level Skulls, Your Princess is in Another Brain Cavity

by Conner Flynn

If you think that playing video games for too long makes your head hurt, just imagine how these guys feel. In fact, these awesome skulls should be used as a gamer PSA. “This is your brain on Super Mario Bros.” Well, if they were human skulls. They may have been human at one time until addiction to the game mutated them to look more like Bowser’s skull.

mario skull

Artist Tobias Wüstefeld from Germany sculpted these skulls which have partial levels from Super Mario Bros. on them. This is what it looks like to be addicted to Nintendo games for sure. Koopas and Goombas crawling around in your skull. Never a moment’s peace.

They will be exhibited at the We Love 8Bit Art Show this September in Berlin.

10 Examples Of What A Camera Shooting 60,000+ Frames Per Second Can Do

by Dylan Love

slow motion

Your smartphone's video camera shoots somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 frames per second. Seems pretty fast, doesn't it? Could you blink your eyes 30 times in one second? You couldn't.

But forget about that wimpy camera for a second. There are supercharged high-grade cameras out there that can shoot over 60,000 frames per second.

When you play these shots back at a much more familiar 30 frames per second, the image is so dramatically slowed down that you notice a wide world of detail that's been escaping your camera since the beginning.

You need to see it to believe it.

Microsoft is Removing Xbox One's DRM

Microsoft is Removing Xbox One's DRM

Multiple sources (this one from Giant Bomb) says that Microsoft is reversing many of their decisions. If you go to the news page on Xbox.com the Xbox One Q&A is being updated as of right now. The updated page is unavailable right now but after the news is live straight from the horse's mouth, we will update.

UPDATE - Click here because the news is true. Microsoft is reverting back to the way video games work now. You can lend a disc to a friend and sell and buy used games. Nothing is changing. My one question is can I say that I want to be part of an "online" mode and have all my games be part of the family sharing plan? The one thing I was looking forward to for the Xbox One was having a digital library.

Will You Buy the Xbox One With No DRM Policies?

It Was Only A Matter Of Time: 'Wicked Paradise', The First Virtual Reality Sex Game Announced For Oculus Rift

virtual-reality-sexy-game.jpg A group of game designers have announced the development of 'Wicked Paradise', a virtual reality sex game for the Oculus Rift system and scheduled for release next year. The future, ladies and gentlemen! Masturbating to video games will never be the same. Ever.
Imagine playing Leisure Suit Larry but instead of watching a screen, you are inside the game. Imagine the world and its inhabitants look highly realistic. Imagine walking into a bar in Wicked Paradise, noticing a beautiful lady, talking to her, and seducing her. Imagine playing your cards right and having passionate wild sex with her. Imagine all this in high quality, immersive virtual reality.
Oh yeah, that sounds like a great idea. Nothing like dry humping the couch with virtual reality goggles and headphones on to not hear when your roommates come home. You won't even know they saw you! Well, not until their Youtube videos go viral anyways. Thanks to Rik Beans, who agrees that when it comes to sex, reality reality is the way to go. Leave the virtual humping to cyborgs.

Watermelon Oreos Exist And They’re Good

by Dan Evon

water melon oreos

Watermelon Oreos exist and they’re available at target.

The new Oreos, which feature bright pink and green filling between to vanilla cookies, might sound a little strange but food bloggers have been giving the cookies some nice reviews.

JunkFoodGuy said that he had some pretty low expectations for the new flavor but ended up enjoying them.

The website writes: “I opened up these Limited Edition Watermelon Golden Oreos, expecting to smell an awful fake watermelon smell to come wafting out…but nothing … As soon as I bit into one … I got an immediate light watermelon taste.  I’ll just say it right off the bat….I liked these.  A LOT.  These DIDN’T overwhelm me with artificial (well, overly artificial) watermelon flavor.  Instead the immediate taste I got was a watermelon taste that tasted like, frankly, it had been blended with creme.”

FoodJunk.com came to the same conclusion. The website writes that the vanilla cookie takes up 75% of the flavor profile but the light watermelon taste “makes the cookie as a whole.”

Dinosaur Dracula adds: “These new ones are actually good. Though you could accurately describe the flavor as ‘watermelonny,’ the vibe I got was pure Bubblicious. The cream filling, resplendent in its shocking hues, tastes exactly like Bubblicious gum.As strange as that seems, it works.”

The Watermelon Oreos have gotten some good reviews from critics but they still might be a little too weird for the average consumer. Still, Nabisco hopes that cookie lovers will bring the limited edition flavor to their next picnic. The company did not say if you should dip the Oreo in milk or lemonade.

The Clarion Ledger notes that this isn’t the first time that Nabisco has sold an interesting flavor of Oreos. The company has also sold Strawberry Shake, Candy Cane, Peanut Butter, Birthday Cake, and Gingerbread Oreos in the past.

Are you going to try the new cookies? Yahoo reports that the limited edition cookies will be available exclusively from Target this Summer.

That Insane New Falcons Stadium Is Really Going To Happen

by Barry Petchesky on Deadspin, shared by Kyle Wagner to Gizmodo

That Insane New Falcons Stadium Is Really Going To Happen

From a pair of ideas floated in April, the Falcons have chosen the official conceptual design for their new stadium, set to begin construction next year. It features an eight-piece roof that will twist closed—essentially an iris diaphragm. We hereby nominate, for a nickname, "The Sphincter."

The design, from 360 Architecture, received the necessary approval from the Georgia World Congress Center Authority today. The project now moves into the schematic design phase, the part where lovely renderings become sanded down to cold functionality by the realities of cost and load-bearing. But they do seem truly set on the petaled roof—360 principal Bill Johnson calls it "primarily an open building that closes instead of a closed building that opens."

The next step is to choose a site for the stadium—the preferred one is just south of the Georgia Dome, but two churches must be acquired before work can start. The city and state are currently in negotiations to buy the land, and if all goes smoothly, ground will be broken in early 2014. The city will pay for $200 million of the construction, and "potentially several times that" to maintain and operate the stadium through 2050.

Some more updated designs, via the Falcons:

Jeep Recall Flip-Flop: Chrysler Will Recall 2.7 Million Vehicles

by Elaine Radford

jeep recall

The jeep recall will go forward. Up to a few hours ago, it was widely reported that Chrysler would resist a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) demand that the automaker recall 2.7 million Jeep sport utility vehicles (SUVs) because of a possible fire risk.

Now the third-largest US automaker has agreed that it will recall the vehicles and install a trailer hitch designed to soften the impact of low-speed accidents.

NHTSA demanded the recall on June 4 after their investigators determined that at least 50 people died in fires from rear-end collisions caused by a defective gas tank design.

Chrysler has said that the vehicles are safe but they will bow to consumer concerns.

Calling it a voluntary campaign rather than a recall, the automaker stated that SUVs without the hitches will get them. SUVs with broken or after-market hitches from other manufacturers will get official Chrysler hitches.

The recall includes Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1993 through 2004 and Jeep Libertys from 2002 through 2007.

According to a USA Today report, the public wasn’t really all that concerned and the price of the SUVs hadn’t been much affected by the debate. Reporter James R. Healey pointed out that the cars involved in the recall are old — sometimes very old, in the case of the ’93s.

AutoTrader editor Brian Moody told him: “The current Jeep vehicles are so fundamentally different that it may not matter as much to the average car shopper.”

Most people who hold these older cars know them well and aren’t about to panic. Among many people, Jeeps are well-regarded for toughness, as you can see from the top photograph of a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the Middle East.

However, your next step is to contact your Chrysler dealer if you hold a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Jeep Liberty affected by the jeep recall.

These Are The Fantastical Victorian Off-Roaders That Didn't Exist

Cars have been around longer than people realize, with larval versions dating back to the early 1800s. What's also been around a long time is people's infatuation with the idea of a go-anywhere exploration vehicle. Even if they were only built in jingoistic imaginations, it's still a start.

Most Reliable Cars

by Randy

Most Reliable Cars infographic

Are you looking for a new car? The Most Reliable Cars infographic from MoneySupermarket rates how reliable the manufacturers are as well as specific car models. The lower the score, the more reliable the car is. If your current car isn’t on the list. Maybe it is time to get a new one.

It is never a pleasant experience to find yourself stranded next to a broken down vehicle at the side of the road, particularly during the winter. Breakdown cover can help to reduce the pain somewhat, but it is still worth making sure that you pick the most reliable car available.

MoneySupermarket.com has therefore teamed up with Warranty Direct to put together the following lists which highlight the most reliable cars on the road. This is decided upon by taking into account overall reliability and the average cost of repairs for these manufacturers and models – coming up with an overall Reliability Index (RI) score. Just for reference- the average RI is 100, and the lower the score the better.

We’ve broken this down by both car make and by individual vehicle models to come up with a definitive list which could prove invaluable to you during the car buying process.

This is a really good use of bar charts.  The company logos or car photos and the relevant data is built directly into the chart so there is no need for a chart legend.  Very easy to read and understand.

Thanks to Mark for sending in the link!
