How Coffee Affects Your Brain [Science Video]

by Geeks are Sexy

IMPORTANT NOTE:

It would be hard – maybe impossible – to overdose on coffee (in liquid form.) You’d likely vomit before a toxic level was reached. But the equivalent caffeine from pills has been fatal. Caffeine pills cause most caffeine-related ER deaths because of what they do to your heart.

High-rez scan of Poe's "Raven," illustrated by Dore

by Cory Doctorow

The Library of Congress's website hosts a high-resolution scan of a rare edition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" illustrated by Gustave Doré. The title-page is at page 11, the list of illustrations is on page 14.

The illustrations are amazing, like no other illustrated Poe I've seen. I've collected my favorites below, and there are a lot of them -- honestly, it was impossible to choose.

‘Breaking Bad’ Creator Vince Gilligan Haunted By Jesse Pinkman’s Perfect Teeth

by Todd Rigney

Breaking Bad Jesse Pinkman

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan doesn’t have any major regrets about his wildly successful television series. However, there is one thing he’d probably do a little differently if given the opportunity: Mess up Aaron Paul’s teeth.

During his recent year-end interview with the folks over at Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan opened up at-length about the award-winning show. When asked if there was anything about the series that “haunted” him to this day, Vince couldn’t think of anything overly problematic. Except Jesse Pinkman’s teeth, that is.

“I wish Jesse’s teeth had been a little more realistic, a little more messed up. Aaron Paul has perfect teeth, and Jesse Pinkman, on the other hand smoked a lot of meth, and that smoke eats the enamel right off of teeth,” the Breaking Bad creator explained.

He added, “And furthermore, this poor kid got beat up two or three times a season, and his teeth were still absolutely perfect. So if we could’ve done a little something to them… But on the other hand, Aaron is such a good-looking guy that maybe that counts as poetic license that we kept his teeth looking nice.”

Now that Breaking Bad is all wrapped up, Gilligan is presently putting his energy towards the proposed spin-off Better Call Saul. If you’re expecting more of the same from the new series, then you’d better rearrange your expectations a little beforehand.

Gilligan said one of the major problems with developing the show is that Saul Goodman (Bob Odernkirk) is a guy who is comfortable in his own skin and “happy-go-lucky,” which makes him a bit different from Walter White. As a result, the writers will have to figure out how to make the series engaging for viewers.

“[That] makes for tricky drama. When I say drama, even in a comedy, you want drama, you want tension and conflict, and a character that at heart seems at peace with himself is intrinsically undramatic. So we’ve been thinking about how to address that issue,” he said.

Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk agrees that the spin-off should give fans a wholly unique experience. In his opinion, the show should provide something “fresh” and original.

He added:

“It’s not gonna be ‘Breaking Bad 2.0′ or whatever. It’s a different show and it’s gonna have a different energy and we’re not gonna try to just extend Breaking Bad. That can’t be done. That show is great, it’s done, it’s all wrapped up and delivered, and now we’re gonna do something fresh and new with a character that is rich and funny, and everyone’s excited about it. And we wanna make sure the audience sees right away that it’s not a continuation of ‘Breaking Bad,’ but rather its own thing that hopefully is gonna be entertaining on its own terms.”

Were you bothered by Jesse Pinkman’s perfect teeth on Breaking Bad?

These Two Photos Show Why We'll Miss Steve Ballmer (MSFT)

by Jay Yarow

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is retiring this year.

On his way out the door, he's getting hit with a lot of shots.

For instance, the Wall Street Journal just had a fairly harsh analysis of Microsoft's CEO search, and put much of the blame for why it doesn't have a new CEO at Ballmer's feet.

We too have been critical of Ballmer, saying (among other things) that his determination to think of Microsoft's bottom line may have led to bad long-term product decisions that have caused problems for the company.

But, there's a few things about Ballmer and his run at Microsoft that are undeniable.

1. He significantly improved the company's financial performance while he ran the company. This is generally discounted as no big deal, but look at Blackberry, or Palm, or Yahoo, or any number of tech companies. Growing earnings and revenues is not some forgone conclusion

2. He turned Microsoft into an enterprise powerhouse. Today, there's a real debate over whether Microsoft should give up on the consumer entirely. There's a subtext to this debate which is that Microsoft was never a consumer company and it was always killer in the enterprise. That's not the case. Microsoft's Server & Tools group has flourish under Ballmer taking on incumbents and winning

3. The guy loved Microsoft. Maybe he loved it too much, but there's no debate that Ballmer adores Microsoft. He loves Microsoft (probably) more than any other CEO loves his/her company.

4. Unlike a lot corporate executives, was an entertaining human being when he was on stage. To illustrate this point, check out the two photos below, which are in Getty's archives. They show Ballmer hamming it up as he plays Xbox on stage. There's just no executive in tech who is as bombastic, or entertaining. The rest of tech's executives are generally cooler, and less willing to explode on stage in moments of unfettered joy and passion. Looking at these photos, it's a good reminder that Ballmer was one of a kind, who we're going to miss.

Today, a patient at my hospital again offered me raisins, which I accepted. This time, his wife had filled the bowl with chocolate-covered ones, and I asked her why the switch. It turns out there wasn't any change after all; he just sucks the chocolate off and puts them back in the bowl. FML

The Taekwondo Kid

by Miss Cellania

Redditor erikhoof posted a set of portraits made when he was about ten years old. It was a brave move, as they are liable to become memes that will last forever.

Only time will tell which will become the most popular: the movie posters, the anti-bullying image macros, or the Nazi salute remixes (which aren't posted here, but you can find them in the comments). Continue reading to see some of the best so far.

This one came from a second thread in which the pictures were named "Androgynous Karate Kid."

And this is Erik today. Many didn't even realize that the kid in the pictures was a boy until they saw this one.
