Seth Rogan, Evan Goldberg Adapting 'Preacher' Comic to AMC Series WIth Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The duo that brought us 'This is the End' is teaming up with Breaking Bad co-producer and writer Sam Catlin to adapt a television-version of Preacher, a comic series of the 1990s.

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer was accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis in an incident which killed his entire congregation and flattened his church. Genesis, the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon, is an infant with no sense of individual will. However, as it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, it might have enough power to rival that of God Himself. In other words, Jesse Custer, bonded to Genesis, may have become the most powerful being in the whole of living existence.

Google Is Clamping Down On The Android Open Source Project — Here's Why

by Tony Danova

Google may have just opened up Chromecast for app development, but as far as Google's signature platform Android goes, BI Intelligence finds that Google is moving in a very different direction.

Android is by far the biggest smartphone platform across the globe, thanks in large part to its decision to start the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in 2007. Back then, with zero mobile market share, Google packaged mobile services like Search, Gmail, and Maps into an open-source platform that third-party vendors and developers could fork to run on their mobile devices. Originally, AOSP was a defense tactic against an Apple mobile monopoly.

Now, AOSP is expanding beyond Google's control. Here's a look at the underlying data from BI Intelligence:

The proliferation of these forked AOSP Android devices on the mainstream market is harmful to Google's proprietary mobile services.

Right now, any developer or company can use AOSP to create an alternative Android operating system that cuts Google off from significant OS revenue. Amazon's Kindle Fire ecosystem is a prominent example. The foundation OS is Android but Amazon developed its own app store, content store, Web browser, and email services, essentially cutting Google out of several of its key services and potential revenue streams.

Because of this, Google is attempting to pivot on its open-source ideals in order to protect its platform.

Back in October, Google took a crucial step in the fight against forks by locking down Google Play Services. Now, any apps developed using Google's proprietary APIs will only work on non-forked versions of Google's Android OS. Running apps developed with Google's API on a Kindle, for example, is no longer possible.

Some may argue that the proliferation of AOSP operating systems, alongside Android, has helped Google fend off stronger competition from Apple. But for Google, a growing contingent of Android users not utilizing Google services is almost as damaging as Apple grabbing a massive market share.

Flappy Bird Raking In $50,000 A Day

by Cassie Boss

Flappy Bird

Flappy Bird is another one of those things that the world just doesn’t need… Another highly addicting smartphone game to keep us all distracted from our daily tasks. Now, I’m not bashing the game, because admittedly, it is fun and simple enough for almost all users. The game is even reportedly raking in a smooth $50,000 in revenue daily.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Flappy Bird was created by Vietnamese developer Don Nguyen, and is one of the hottest games and apps for both the iPhone and Andriod devices. As stated in an earlier report by The Inquisitr, the game is simple enough.

“All users have to do is click the screen to help a bird float along in an 8-bit world that looks incredibly similar to Super Mario Bros., weaving it between green pipes. Hit a pipe, you die.”

Though I have to say… I don’t remember dieing when I ran into a green pipe in Super Mario Bros., unless a Piranha was lurking inside and happened to eat me.

Flappy Bird has been sitting at the top of the charts for nearly a month now, and is one of the top free gaming apps in the store. According to The Verge, the game is earning, on average, $50,000 a day from in-app ads. The game itself is of course free to download, and has so far been downloaded 50 million times, and according to The Verge, has accumulated over 47,000 reviews in the App Store, “as many as apps like Evernote and Gmail”.

“The reason Flappy Bird is so popular is that it happens to be something different from mobile games today, and is a really good game to compete against each other,” Nguyen says. “People in the same classroom can play and compete easily because [Flappy Bird] is simple to learn, but you need skill to get a high score.”

When asked if he was considering changing the game, or even creating a sequel to it, Nguyen said that Flappy Bird has reached a state where anything added to the game will ruin it somehow, so I’d like to leave it as is. I will think about a sequel but I’m not sure about the timeline.”

The Inquisitr reported that the game never gets any easier. Justin Davis of IGN noted that “Even with a 50+ high score and most runs climbing well into the double digits, you’ll still die on the first or second gap. A lot. You never feel safe or comfortable in Flappy Bird’s gauntlet. The game is still out to kill you. And it will.”

Will you be one of the millions to get hooked in this new game? Share your thoughts on Flabby Bird below!

EPA Threatens To Fine Farmer $37,500 Every Time It Rains

by Tara Dodrill

lois alt

The EPA is threatening to fine a West Virginia chicken farmer $37,500 every single time it rains. Lois Alt has been farming pretty much all of her life. She is used to battling bad weather, fluctuating poultry prices, and loss of livestock, but she may now be in the fight for her very existence. Alt owns Eight is Enough poultry farm in Old Fields.

The Environmental Protection Agency believes that feathers, farm manure, rain water drainage, and even old fashioned and all-natural dust on Lois Alt’s West Virginia farm are contaminating the environment. The new stance by the EPA could potentially impact thousands of American farmers and ultimately put them out of business. The new regulations come as a result of the Clean Water Act.

American Farm Bureau Federation attorney Danielle Quist had this to say about the EPA threats chicken farmers are now facing:

“The EPA conducted a training inspection for new inspectors on Lois Alt’s farm in 2012. A few months later she got a letter telling her that she was violating the Clean Water Act. She was told that she had to go get a federal permit due to the feathers and dust on her farm. She was shocked. She runs a very clean farm. Once you have a federal permit you invited EPA into your backyard. Most farmers work with their states and local extension officers. Most farmers, particularly small farmers like Lois Alt, do not work with the EPA. They speak an entirely different language, it’s a very heavy handed approach.”

EPA officials claim that high levels of nitrogen in her chicken’s waste were fouling waterways. She is fighting back in the federal court of the Northern District of West Virginia. Although the EPA has at least temporarily dropped the $37,500 fine threat, the Clean Water Act case remains on the docket. The West Virginia farmer’s attorney are arguing that the EPA is wrong to deny small farms like hers Clean Water Act’s statutory exemption for agricultural stormwater. Big farms reportedly get the rain runoff exemption.

American Farm Bureau Federation President Bob Stallman had this to say about Alt and the Clean Water Act:

“Mrs. Alt has courageously taken on EPA not just for her own benefit, but for the benefit of other farmers. She refused to back down from her principles despite the best efforts of EPA and environmental groups.”

A Delaware study raised the possibility that many small farmers have been wrongly fined for polluting the ecosystem in the past, a fact that has increased farmer suspicions of EPA inspectors.

Do you think the EPA has garnered too much control over property rights and the way farmers conduct business?
