Google: Except For Child Pornography, We Do NOT Snoop Your Email Looking For Crimes (GOOG)

by Julie Bort

Larry Page not bad

Even though a registered sex offender was recently arrested after Google tipped off authorities to alleged child pornography images in the man's Gmail, Google isn't searching your emails for other crimes, the company told Business Insider.

And it can't mistake an innocent photo for an illegal one. A Google spokesperson told us:

Sadly all Internet companies have to deal with child sexual abuse. It’s why Google actively removes illegal imagery from our services — including search and Gmail — and immediately reports abuse to NCMEC [The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children]. This evidence is regularly used to convict criminals.

Each child sexual abuse image is given a unique digital fingerprint which enables our systems to identify those pictures, including in Gmail.

It is important to remember that we only use this technology to identify child sexual abuse imagery, not other email content that could be associated with criminal activity (for example using email to plot a burglary).

To unpack that a little ...

Internet companies have worked with the The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to create a database of child pornography pictures. Each one of those is given a unique numerical number like a fingerprint, known as a "hash" in the tech world. When Google scans Gmail or the web, it is looking for those fingerprints.

If Google finds one, it is legally obligated to report it, attorney Chris Hoofnagle, director of information privacy programs at the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, told Business Insider.

But your photo of your cute baby splashing around in the tub wouldn't be in that database and wouldn't be tagged with a finger print. So emailing that to grandma wouldn't cause Gmail to report you to authorities.

Likewise, this kind of search technique can't be easily translated to other crimes. It's not the same as a keyword search looking for words like "murder," "killed," "stolen" or "bomb." Think how many times people use use those words innocently. "My sister really overcooked those carrots. It was murder eating them." And so on.

That said, it doesn't mean that Google can't change its mind and start searching your Gmail for other things, warns Hanni Fakhoury, a staff lawyer for privacy watchdog organization the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

"There's nothing in their privacy policy that precludes them from doing that. Nothing in the law precludes them for doing that, as long as the user consents," he told Business Insider.

In fact, Google's Terms of Service tell you that you must follow the law when using its services and warns you that it analyzes your email and other documents you upload to serve you ads and perform services like scanning for viruses.

It is similar to the terms of service for all internet providers.

That kind of leeway has led to strange decisions by other email providers, Fakhoury said, such as when Microsoft admitted earlier this year that it once searched a blogger's emails when it suspected an employee had leaked proprietary software to the blogger.

And, on a somewhat ironic note, a source close to Google tells us that the hash technology that Google, Facebook, and others use to scout out child pornography was developed by Microsoft.

Least Secure Cars Revealed At Black Hat

by Unknown Lamer
Lucas123 (935744) writes Research by two security experts presenting at Black Hat this week has labeled the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade and the 2014 Toyota Prius as among the vehicles most vulnerable to hacking because of security holes that can be accessed through a car's Bluetooth, telematics, or on-board phone applications. The most secure cars include the Dodge Viper, the Audi A8, and the Honda Accord, according to Researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek. Millar and Valasek will reveal the full report on Wednesday, but spoke to Dark Reading today with some preliminary data. The two security experts didn't physically test the vehicles in question, but instead used information about the vehicles' automated capabilities and internal network. "We can't say for sure we can hack the Jeep and not the Audi," Valasek told Dark Reading. "But... the radio can always talk to the brakes" because both are on the same network. According to the "Connected Car Cybersecurity" report from ABI Research, there have been "quite a few proof of concepts" demonstrating interception of wireless signals of tire pressure monitoring systems, impairing anti-theft systems, and taking control of self-driving and remote control features through a vehicle's internal bus, known as controller area network (CAN).

AMD Readies Radeon R7 Branded Client SSDs

by btarunr@techpowerup.com (btarunr)
AMD's Radeon brand is turning out to be its only hope in capturing high-end gaming PC sales. The brand now covers AMD's high-performance GPUs, system memory modules, and now, client SSDs. The company is giving final touches to three client SSD models in the 2.5-inch SATA form-factor, bearing the Radeon R7 brand, featuring capacities of 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB.

All three feature SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and offer sequential read speeds as high as 550 MB/s, sequential writes of up to 470 MB/s on the 120 GB variant; and up to 530 MB/s on both the 240 GB and 480 GB ones. The three offer 4K random access throughput of up to 85,000 IOPS, 95,000 IOPS, and 100,000 IOPS, respectively; with 4K QD32 steady-state throughput of 12,000 IOPS, 20,000 IOPS, and 23,000 IOPS, respectively. The three are based on OCZ's Indilinx Barefoot 3 processor, driving Toshiba-made 19 nm MLC NAND flash chips. The three will be formally launched on the 13th of August, 2014.

Cattle Call

by noreply@blogger.com (Miss Cellania)

Farmer Derek Klingenberg serenades his cattle with a little trombone music. But where are the cattle? Never fear: if you play it, they will come. And these cows are Lorde fans, or else they just like that guy with the trombone who feeds them. Klingenberg ends the concert with a little singalong. (via Tastefully Offensive)

Whole Pickle Corn Dogs

by John Farrier

Last month, Jeff Miller and Meg Strouse of Thrillist attended the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, California. They partook of the outlandish foods that have become central to county and state fairs, trying out delights such as deep fried pecan pie and bacon-wrapped Jack Daniel's churro.

What got my attention and made my mouth water are these corn dogs sold by Pickle O' Pete. They're made by coring a whole pickle, sliding a hot dog inside, dipping the combination in corn dog batter, then deep frying. Delicious!
