Remote Control Drumming Toy Keeps the Beat Without Any Electronics

If you've lost count of how many times you'd wished you could've drummed along to a song with a set of remote controls in your hands instead of drumsticks, here's an adorably-odd toy called Mr. Knocky that does the actual drumming for you—without electronics, batteries, or incompatibilities with your OS of choice.

Stunning Photos Of Europeans Who Have Abandoned Civilization To Live Off The Land

Back in 2010, French photographer Antoine Bruy began hitchhiking around Europe without any fixed route. Along his travels, he met people who had entirely abandoned city life in favor of an isolated country existence they found more fulfilling.
Bruy began seeking out people who lived off-the-grid. After three years on the road, staying in makeshift houses and on community farms, he has released Scrublands, a documentation of the lifestyle. While each living situation is different, Bruy found that all the people he met shared a common desire to escape the rat race and achieve a quieter life in harmony with nature.
Bruy shared a number of photos from Scrublands here, but you can check out the rest on his website. Bruy is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to continue his project in the United States, which you can donate to here.
Over the last 30 years, numerous Europeans have begun to move out of the cities and head for sparsely populated areas like the Sierra de Cazorla mountains in Spain (shown here), the French Pyrenees mountains, and parts of Switzerland. Bruy began meeting such people after volunteering at farms through WWOOF, an organization that places traveling volunteers at organic farms throughout the world.
This property in the French Pyrenees is owned by a German man, who moved with his family here 25 years ago. He has since renovated the shack to be a completely self-sufficient house. There are no electrical appliances, but the solar panel powers small lights in the house.
Although his family has left, the German continues to live here with four other people and a revolving door of 20 or so travelers.

Sand-sational Creations
Celebrate Play in the Sand Day by enjoying these skillful sand creations. There are sand sculpture competitions all over the world, but you don’t need to be a professional to give it a try!
It’s hard to say exactly when sand sculpting originated but there is conjecture that even the ancient Egyptians made sand models of the pyramids.
The Australian Sand Sculpting team opened their largest exhibit yet, called “Story Land,” which ran this year and featured hand-crafted sculptures from classic and modern stories.
The tallest sandcastle was made in October 2013 in Point Pleasant, NJ commemorating the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy by artist Ed Jarrett, who has broken the Guiness World Record for the tallest sandcastle four times. This latest creation was 38 feet, two inches tall.
Not all sand is created equal. Experts recommend using fine sand to create sculptures. Dig an inch or two below the surface to find the ideal grains.
Drip Sandcastles, like the creation shown here, are made by mixing sand with water then dribbling the mixture onto existing structures by hand.
Going to the beach and building sand sculptures is a fun activity for all ages. Have a blast creating your favorite animal, building, or design!

Mesmerizing: Vapor Clouds Dancing To Music Beats
This is a video of a guy blowing vapor clouds in his car and watching the clouds dance to the beat of the song playing. I kind of liked that song. Thankfully, they included the name of it on the Youtube page (Cashmere by Hucci). That was very nice of them. A lot of times you have to ask, then other Youtube commenters come in and call you names and tell you that you should probably just kill yourself. That's why we can't have nice things. "No, you can't have nice things because you're poor." Whatever, I could rob a bank if I wanted, I have masks.

Bench-pressing Hermit Crab
This pet hermit crab climbed to the top of his, um, food container or something, and now he’s trying to raise the roof! When his owner came in the room, he said, “Me? No, I’m not trying to escape. Oh, I’m just exercising! Lifting weights! Yeah, that’s the ticket…” -via Tastefully Offensive

(PR) Intel Details Newest Microarchitecture and 14 Nanometer Manufacturing Process
"Intel's integrated model - the combination of our design expertise with the best manufacturing process - makes it possible to deliver better performance and lower power to our customers and to consumers," said Rani Borkar, Intel vice president and general manager of product development. "This new microarchitecture is more than a remarkable technical achievement. It is a demonstration of the importance of our outside-in design philosophy that matches our design to customer requirements."
Tick Bite Can Trigger Allergy to Red Meat
D Gmost terrifying thing I've read all day.

The Lone Star tick is called that because it was found in Texas -and throughout the South. This insect’s bite can cause a strange reaction: an allergic reaction to red meat, such as beef, pork, venison, or rabbit. And it’s spreading- Lone Star ticks have been found all the way up the eastern seaboard of the U.S. One allergist on Long Island has seen almost 200 cases of reactions to meat caused by the tick.
The bugs harbor a sugar that humans don't have, called alpha-gal. The sugar is also found in red meat — beef, pork, venison, rabbit — and some dairy products. It's usually fine when people encounter it through food that gets digested.
But a tick bite triggers an immune system response, and in that high-alert state, the body perceives the sugar the tick transmitted to the victim's bloodstream and skin as a foreign substance, and makes antibodies to it. That sets the stage for an allergic reaction the next time the person eats red meat and encounters the sugar.
It’s not yet clear whether the meat allergy triggered by the tick is permanent. Those who have suffered a reaction are wary of tempting fate. Read more about the Lone Star tick at NBC. -via Digg
