11 Beautiful Black Chickens

by Miss Cellania

If you live in an area where livestock is grown, you usually see chickens that are either white or various shades of brown, with an occasional oddball black chicken. There are quite a few breeds of chicken that are black, or mostly black, and some even have black skin and meat! Let’s meet some of these attractive black chicken breeds.

1. Ancona

Photograph by Festina lente.

The Ancona breed originated in the town of Ancona, Italy, although it is now more popular in England and America. Its distinction is the black color with white accents. In a prime specimen, every fifth feather has a white tip.

2. Valdarno

The Valdarno was originally bred in Italy in 1905. It is not to be confused with the Valdarnese, which is a white hybrid. The Valdarno chicken is known for its hardiness and high-quality meat.

3. Orpington

Orpington chickens were first bred by William Cook in Orpington, England, in 1886. It was an attempt to replicate the size and egg-laying capabilities of American chickens with white skin that the British preferred (American chickens tended more to yellow skin at the time). The black Orpington was the result, and became quite popular. Kent later bred the chickens in different colors, which also became popular.

4. Silkie

Silkies are very popular among those who want to raise chickens as pets, because they are so soft and fluffy. They are also gentle and trusting. They do not tolerate wet weather well, as their fluffy feathers are not waterproof the way other chickens’ are. Silkies come in several different colors of feathers: black, white, gold, and gray, but all have black faces and skin, and their beaks, legs, and meat are dark gray or grayish-blue. They also have five toes, while most chickens have four.

5. Black Shumen

The Black Shumen chicken is a rare breed that is native to and named after the Shumen region of Bulgaria. It has white skin, black feathers, and a pronounced red comb. Its feathers have a green sheen.

6. White-crested Black Polish

The White-crested Black Polish chicken is an ornamental breed from Poland. They are mostly show chickens. These chickens are meek, and can make good pets, although they have somewhat-obscured vision due to the crest of feathers on their heads.

7. Minorca

The Minorca chicken originated on the Mediterranean island of Minorca and was popularized in Spain. They were once rather small, but have been bred to be much bigger than their ancestors.

8. Sumatra

Photograph by Flickr user Melissa Wilkins.

The Sumatra chicken is from Sumatra, as you may have guessed, but it is also native to Java and Borneo, where they live in the wild as well as on poultry farms. Wild Sumatra chickens come in several colors, but black with red is the most prevalent, and the most favored by poultry farmers. They have long, flowing tail feathers. The Sumatra chicken was once bred and sold for fighting, but now are mostly sold for exhibition.

9. Kadaknath

Photograph by Arulnathan.

The Kadaknath chicken is a breed native to Madhya Pradesh, India. It is traditionally black, but golden and mottled breeds have been developed. Still, all Kadaknath chickens have black meat -and even black bones!

10. Ayam Cemani

Photograph by Kangwira.

The blackest of all the chickens is the Ayam Cemani. It is native to Java, Sumatra, and Madura Island in Indonesia. Due to fibromelanosis, a genetic condition that causes hyperpigmentation, these chicken have black feathers, skin, beaks, claws, and meat, which you can see here. The only part of the chicken not completely black is its blood, which is darker than a normal chicken’s blood.

11. Swedish Black

Photograph by Linn Kangas.

Bohuslän-Dals Svarthöna, or the Swedish Black chicken, was originally bred in the counties of Bohuslän and Dals in Sweden. It originated when the Ayam Cemani was crossed with local chickens, so it has the same all-black pigmentation, even the meat, but it is much smaller than the Indonesian breed.

I think black chickens are lovely, but I don't know if I could bring myself to eat black chicken meat. Could you?

Taco Bell Is Testing Tortilla Chip-Encrusted Fried Chicken––No, Really

by Laura Northrup

(Foodbeast)

(Foodbeast)

Remember a few months ago when we shared the news that KFC in the Philippines is offering fried chicken covered in Clover Chips, a popular tapioca-based snack? We took the opportunity to wonder whether parent company Yum Brands might bring that concept to the United States, substituting Dorito crumbs for Clover Chips. Well, maybe the company was listening…just not necessarily KFC.

Now, this might not really happen, and they’re not saying that the tortilla chips are necessarily Doritos. However, in our poll, almost half of you said that you’d be interested in tortilla-encrusted chicken, so we thought that we should share this important information.

Taco Bell sort of mentioned this in passing during the same event where they announced the forthcoming biscuit folded in half with meat inside Biscuit Tacos, because fried chicken and biscuits are delicious together. Foodbeast coaxed Taco Bell representatives to admit that yes, fried chicken is yet another protein option that they’re testing that will also be available in its other dishes.

Modder Turns Doom into Donkey Kong Country

by Conner Flynn

I never thought I would see these two games together. A modder named DooMero made this version of Donkey Kong Country for GZDoom. That’s right, it basically turns Doom into a Donkey Kong platform game. Let’s just call it Donkey Doom.

dk doom 620x330magnify

Right now it is just a unfinished demo version. You can see a full play-through in action below. It’s pretty cool. If you want to play, you just need a copy of GZDoom, the mod, and a WAD file from one of the official Doom-engine games.

They say that the controls are surprisingly pretty frustrating though. Some might ask why make this? I say, why not?

The Fantastic Paper Art of Yulia Brodskaya

by Lisa Marcus

The exceptional paper art of Yulia Brodskaya, featured previously at Neatorama, continues to evolve and capture the imagination of art lovers everywhere. At only thirty-one years of age, and given the fact that she didn't start experimenting with papercraft until the late 2000s, one can only imagine the level to which she will continue to cultivate her artwork.

Using only hand-manipulated strips of paper and glue, Brodskaya makes the masterpieces shown here, some at an impressively large scale, as seen in the photo below. Brodskaya's artworks have been in demand by collectors all over the world, including notable personalities such as Oprah Winfrey and organizations such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Walmart Focus Group Of 1,000 Kids Tells Us What Toys To Buy Them

by Laura Northrup

Walmart started a new holiday tradition last year. It starts in the summer: the company invites a test panel of 1,000 children of all ages to play with a variety of toys, then rate how fun they are. About a quarter of the toys make the chain’s annual list of the 20 hottest toys, which Walmart then stocks up on, and Walmart shoppers might pick up after their Black Friday towel-grabbing frenzy. Maybe.

This year’s list includes toys at a variety of prices that do everything from fly to bark to making mobile phone cases. No, we’re not kidding: there’s a craft kit that lets kids mold silicone to make custom phone cases. I’m not sure whether this is more or less useful than the woven cotton potholders that I made and gave away at that age, but at least it doesn’t leave tiny rubber bands everywhere.

Photo collages AND stick-on rhinestones? Sign me up! I am not being sarcastic.

Photo collages AND stick-on rhinestones? Sign me up! I am not being sarcastic.

On the hot list, there’s also a cool flying car from Hot wheels, a robopuppy, a bunch of licensed toys from the movie “Frozen,” a remote-control dinosaur that’s so awesome that it’s already sold out, and a $60 smartwatch for kids, that, as far as I can figure out, actually has more features than the Apple Watch.

At least Walmart has the sense to not let the children in their focus group develop the toys. We all know where that leads.

Verizon Could Blow Up TV As We Know It Next Year

by Lisa Eadicicco

Lowell McAdam Verizon

Verizon may launch its own digital video service by the middle of 2015, the company's CEO Lowell McAdam said in an investor conference according to reports from The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

The Internet service provider is nearing agreements with major content companies, and McAdam told the Journal he's been having regular meetings with top executives from CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, Dreamworks, and digital startups like Awesomeness TV.

Verizon's service sounds like it would essentially be a direct competitor to Netflix. The advantage, however, is that Verizon's offering would also be able to stream some live channels including content from major broadcasters and sporting events.

The reports come months after Verizon purchased Intel's media division in January, a sector of the company that focused on developing cloud TV products and services. It's possible that Verizon could be using these assets to develop its own viable alternative to cable. Intel was supposed to launch an internet TV service called OnCue last year, but the project was scrapped. Verizon bought the technology instead.

"I think over-the-top video is right around the corner," McAdam's said according to the Journal. "We've got the assets in place, and I don't feel like we need an awful lot more."

The news also comes as other tech companies are scrambling to come up with their own cord-cutting alternatives to cable. On Wednesday, for example, Sony signed a deal with Viacom that gives the company access to channels such as Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and MTV for its own upcoming service, as Forbes reported.

McAdam also acknowledged that consumers are interested in more flexible options when streaming video on mobile devices. Consumers would rather pick and choose their favorite channels and shows than sift through hundreds of options.

Statistics have shown that services like Netflix and Hulu are already pulling some households away from cable television. According to a survey from Experian Marketing Services from earlier this year, households with a Netflix or Hulu subscription were nearly three times as likely not to have a cable subscription than the average household.

If Verizon does unveil its own Internet-based streaming service, it could move us one step closer to a future without traditional cable.
