Mitt Romney Announces He Is Not Running For President: "Best To Give Other Leaders The Opportunity"

by Tyler Durden

Just out from Hugh Hewitt:

I’ve been emailed this text of remarks Mitt Romney will be making to his supporters shortly:

* * *

Let me begin by letting you know who else is on this call, besides Ann and me. There are a large number of people who signed on to be leaders of our 2016 finance effort. In addition, state political leadership from several of the early primary states are on the line. And here in New York City, and on the phone, are people who have been helping me think through how to build a new team, as well as supporters from the past who have all been kind enough to volunteer their time during this deliberation stage. Welcome, and thank you. Your loyalty and friendship, and your desire to see the country with new, competent and conservative leadership warms my heart.

After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee.

Let me give you some of my thinking. First, I am convinced that with the help of the people on this call, we could win the nomination. Our finance calls made it clear that we would have enough funding to be more than competitive. With few exceptions, our field political leadership is ready and enthusiastic about a new race. And the reaction of Republican voters across the country was both surprising and heartening. I know that early poll numbers move up and down a great deal during a campaign, but we would have no doubt started in a strong position. One poll out just today shows me gaining support and leading the next closest contender by nearly two to one. I also am leading in all of the four early states. So I am convinced that we could win the nomination, but fully realize it would have been difficult test and a hard fight.

I also believe with the message of making the world safer, providing opportunity to every American regardless of the neighborhood they live in, and working to break the grip of poverty, I would have the best chance of beating the eventual Democrat nominee, but that is before the other contenders have had the opportunity to take their message to the voters.

I believe that one of our next generation of Republican leaders, one who may not be as well known as I am today, one who has not yet taken their message across the country, one who is just getting started, may well emerge as being better able to defeat the Democrat nominee. In fact, I expect and hope that to be the case.

I feel that it is critical that America elect a conservative leader to become our next president. You know that I have wanted to be that president. But I do not want to make it more difficult for someone else to emerge who may have a better chance of becoming that president. You can’t imagine how hard it is for Ann and me to step aside, especially knowing of your support and the support of so many people across the country.   But we believe it is for the best of the Party and the nation.

I’ve been asked, and will certainly be asked again if there are any circumstances whatsoever that might develop that could change my mind. That seems unlikely. Accordingly, I’m not organizing a PAC or taking donations; I’m not hiring a campaign team.

I encourage all of you on this call to stay engaged in the critical process of selecting a Republican nominee for President. Please feel free to sign up on a campaign for a person who you believe may become our best nominee.

I believe a Republican winning back the White House is essential for our country, and I will do whatever I can to make that happen.

To all my supporters, friends and family who worked both tirelessly and loyally to support my campaigns in the past, I will always be deeply appreciative. What you have already done is a tribute to your patriotism. We are overwhelmed and humbled by your loyalty to us, by your generosity of spirit, and by your friendship. God bless you all.

4-Speed & Powerglide: 1963 & 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbriers

by Frank

This pair of Corvair Greenbrier vans—one a 1963, the other a ’64—both appear to be ex-church vehicles in pretty good shape. Registered non-op, running condition isn’t mentioned though both benefit from new or rebuilt carbs and clear titles. The earlier example is a 4-speed, the other a Powerglide, and graphics are removable stickers. Find them both here on Craigslist in Los Angeles, California for $6,500 (’63) and $7,500 (’64).

The world's largest ice fishing competition looks pretty freaking nuts

The world's largest ice fishing competition looks pretty freaking nuts

This is what people do in Minnesota in the middle of January: Drill 30,000 holes on Gull Lake for the largest ice fishing contest in the world. I'm not so surprised about the fact that there are 30,000 holes in that lake but about the fact that there's such a thing as an ice fishing contest anywhere. Watch the drone footage:

Karate Guy Plays Electric Guitar, Chops Flaming Boards

by Conner Flynn

This is not new, but it’s super fun. Watch this guy’s mad skills as he alternates between playing the guitar and chopping stacks of flaming boards. I can’t decide whether this is awesome or completely idiotic. Regardless, you know that this guy is a hit at barbecues and parties.

He even breaks the last one with his head. Forget magicians. Hire this guy for kid’s parties. It can’t sound any worse than what they already listen to. Well, maybe it can, but it’s still fun. Watch the video and decide for yourself.

Common Core is so Bad even Democrats are Starting to Reject It

by Jake (Diary)

Common Core horror stories abound, but until now, the most visible opponents of the educational takeover have been Republicans. Washington state’s Democrats have changed that. A few days ago, the leaders of the state party met and formally condemned the education standards. Per Fox News:

Leaders of the state Democratic Party have passed a resolution condemning the national education standards known as the Common Core, nearly five years after the state adopted the new learning goals.

At a party meeting in Olympia on Saturday, the Democrats approved a resolution saying the state was unfairly pressured into adopting the new standards.

They are asking the Legislature and Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn to back away from the Common Core and return to a similar list of education goals created in Washington state.

Dorn, for the record, is a Common Core supporter, so people in Washington will have a fight on their hands to back out of Common Core. Still, the fact that we actually have a state Democratic Party rejecting Common Core is huge news. They even sound like conservatives in the criticism. Common Core gives too much power to the federal government, corporate and special interests had too much say in the creation of the standards and that state legislatures adopted the proposals only under significant pressure from the US Department of Education.

This makes hatred of Common Core a bipartisan issue in Washington. The state Republican Party passed a similar resolution about a year ago. Hopefully, this will give those who oppose the standards in Washington state some momentum, and it makes for a great talking point for similar groups across the nation.

A 'Tinder expert' tells other men how to be more successful on the app

by Joshua Barrie

Tinder

A new eBook helps men who just can't bag a date on Tinder. It’s called "Tinder for Experts: How to stop losing hot matches, wasting time, & getting nowhere.”

It was written by a man known only as "Max,” and is sponsored byTinder Advisor, an advice service for users of the popular dating/hook-up app. Max says it’s based on “accredited seduction psychology.” Whatever that means.

Max, who describes himself as a serial entrepreneur, built on his personal struggle to match with women on Tinder. By seeing it as a "sales process,” he made himself better at self-promotion.

Indeed, it all sounds a bit Julien Blanc — like a book designed specifically for pick-up artists to use one of the most prolific dating apps out there to get even more action.

But Max tells us this isn't the case. Instead, he says, his intention is to save men time and embarrassment. Tinder is not just a tool for hooking-up, but an opportunity to "attract quality women they might not have dared approach in real life,” he explains, adding that people can "find truly remarkable women" on the app.

It still sounds somewhat suspect. But we'll let you judge for yourselves.Below, we’ve republished some of Max's key Tinder advice with the author’s permission.

1. Tinder isn't just a "sex app."It's a massive resource that can have a more fruitful effect than trying to meet women at a bar.

Max writes that many describe Tinder as an "app serving strictly to have a one-night stand." But he says girls on Tinder aren't any more inclined to go straight to bed than girls at the bar. Max tells readers that the only reason more men get lucky on the app is because of the number of users — but while Tinder helps men hook-up more, it's not necessarily with the ones they really want to be with.;

Understand that sleeping with the normal girls — the ones you truly want — is going to be harder than if you’d had the luck of running into her alone at the bar. Think about it, you need to convince a girl who has never seen you that she needs to spend some time with you, preferably one-on-one, as opposed to go on with life as usual or meet one of the other million guys on the app. The good news is that the law of large numbers ensures that you will succeed far more than at the bar, and there are techniques to multiply your odds.

2. Be the "absolute biggest sweetheart."

I am talking about Ryan Gosling in The Notebook. The guy who can do no wrong and was brought up to do anything for a woman. Someone who respects them so much that he is shy by nature and would never dare to approach a girl in a bar or do anything player-like for that matter. This is the guy that all women dream about, but would never actually be attracted to in reality. The Sweetheart Principle will enable you to pleasantly surprise a woman...

...the Sweetheart approach will yield the highest success because it appeals to a broad base of normal girls. In the later chapter, you will see many examples of how to put this frame into practice at every step until the meet-up. Don’t forget, once you finally do meet her, Ryan Gosling needs to turn into James Bond if you want to avoid a wedding and, instead, guide her seamlessly into your bed.

3. Set the right range.

To stay optimal, I highly recommend increasing the range incrementally. Start small and if you run out of girls and if you feel your plate is not yet full, increase the range gradually. This will make you prioritize your energy on the ones closest with the highest chance of success.

4. Create the perfect profile photo.

How does Max think men can get maximum impact for just one photo? First, formatting is very important.

He explains:

Avoid posting a photo with:

  • Only your face
  • You standing somewhere in the distance
  • You turned away from the camera
  • You sporting the “serious” look
  • you posing with anyone else. people in the background can be ok.
  • Blurry resolution. women are very weary of this while swiping and you should be too.
  • Parts of the photo hidden by darkness. same principle as previous point. Avoid Black and white photos. you wearing sunglasses

Instead:

  • Have a photo of only you, the sole focus of all attention
  • We must be able to see your entire head, down to at least your chest*. Anything past the knees will be too zoomed out
  • Stare at the camera, or slightly away if you want to have the “in action” look
  • Smile genuinely
  • Make sure it is a crisp shot, such that someone who saw the photo could later recognize you in person. This being said, use apps like instagram to optimize the lighting and smooth over your features. This needs to be the absolute best version of you
  • Display one or several of the following value indicators: taste for luxury, physical activity, artistic side, travel experience or acute sense of style

Max clarifies the whole thing in another section: "avoid the d*bag trap," he says. That means doing away with anything that will lower your "perceived value." He advises against selfies, "cool serious faces," and "showing off."

5. Swipe instead of clicking on the "X" or love heart.

Max says not to click the "X" or the love heart, as it takes more time than swiping. Crucially, he goes through the pros and cons of using a "swipe all girls right" process, or operating a "swipe right or left depending on profile picture" style. The first, Max says, is the fastest possible method and gains the maximum number of matches; the latter, though, means "no scary matches" and provides "minimal thought or emotional engagement."

6. Give girls time to match you first.

You can swipe at anytime of the day or night. However, I recommend doing this when you are stuck waiting and have absolutely nothing better to do. Otherwise, do it while you are in the middle of a Tinder conversation since you are logged on and distracted anyways. Since swiping is extremely time-flexible, set rules for yourself and don’t let it interfere with regular life. Swipe at least once, every one or two days, because active users have a priority over other men.

You can swipe many times in a day, you are better off spacing out the sessions, here is why: Tinder will have time to sort through the girls and show you the active ones in priority. Some matches may check up on when you were last logged on and get turned off if the number is always under five minutes. Give some girls time to match you first. This last point is called herding and can differentiate a king from a mere expert.

7. Don't be too picky.

Max tells men to be honest with themselves and says it's not realistic to only right-swipe models. He also explains that having friends "objectively rate your profile" is beneficial:

Since men only rate women on their looks, their scoring is simpler: a number between 1 and 10. Even women subconsciously know that this is their value on the dating scene, especially on Tinder. Right swipe women that score between your baseline and your ceiling. You will rarely match women above your ceiling, never mind meet them! Similarly, women below your baseline are the ones you do not want to meet even if they offer you sex on a silver platter.

8. The art of chatting.

In this section, Max talks about "when to engage," tapping into what he calls "prime-times." He divides the periods into Monday to Thursday, 7-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday between 3-9 p.m., and Sunday between 4-11 p.m. Each carries different weight.

This is Sunday, for example:

This time is devoted to relaxation and frivolous activities like Tinder. This is a great opportunity to schedule dates for the week because girls do not usually feel so “busy”. In many cities, a lot of girls will have followed a friend’s recommendation and downloaded Tinder over the weekend. On Sundays, you have plenty of time to build rapport with these newcomers.

There's also a "late night match" subsection, which Max says could lead to the most promiscuous conversations.

9. Working out who the girl actually is.

Max tells men that a Tinder profile isn't enough to judge somebody. He's got a solution: Find her on Facebook.

Most times, a girl’s Tinder profile is not enough to let you know if she is truly worth meeting. Having her on Facebook means that you can get a better grasp of who she really is and what she really looks like.

Max says women often hide their true identity through things like selective photos, or give away their desires by only posting photos of luxury items.

10. Don't move too fast.

Sexual escalation refers to making the girl imagine you as a sexual partner. This does not mean you should talk dirty right away and risk alienating most self-respecting girls. The escalation is done through gradual steps to avoid burning promising leads. Although this strategy is risky, I recommend a minimum of sexual escalation in all interactions because it makes them more fun and paints you as a confident male.

To do this skillfully, you need to apply two steps forward with the ability to take one step back. This way, if you sense that the girl is uncomfortable, you can still recover. Some of these notions have already been explored in previous chapters. Creating a fantasy is a light form of sexual escalation. Saying something very forward, but covering with a smiley, is a good way to escalate sexually while maintaining the ability to take a step back. These, as well as other techniques, are elaborated in this section in progressive order of intensity.

11. Dirty pictures are OK, apparently.

Max describes how he used to think naughty images were only for internet perverts and convicted felons. Then, he writes, he went traveling with another man who regularly sent intimate photos to Tinder matches — apparently to great effect.

Tim Cook is already subtly telling people why we need an iPad Pro (AAPL)

by Lisa Eadicicco

tim cook

Apple is reportedly working on a larger 12-inch iPad, which some have been calling the "iPad Pro." It's expected to have a 12-inch screen and may even come with a stylus.

That sounds a bit like Microsoft's Surface Pro 3, which also comes with a stylus and a screen of the same size.

Such a move would be strange for Apple, especially since CEO Tim Cook has been vocal about the idea that tablets should not be made to compete with laptops, which exactly what the Surface Pro is trying to do.

He even called PC makers "confused" for producing devices that combine the elements of a tablet and a laptop.

So what would make Apple change it's mind? The iPad has been in a slump — sales are down, and now it seems like Cook thinks the enterprise could be the answer that would make the iPad relevant again.

He started laying the foundation for the need for an iPad Pro in Apple's earnings call on Tuesday. Cook talked for a bit about how there's room for Apple to innovate in the workplace, especially now that the company has partnered with IBM.

"And so the real opportunity is to bring mobility into the enterprises and change how people work," Cook said on the call.

Cook also mentioned that although Apple products are being used in Fortune 500 companies, enterprises are only deploying iPads to "a small percentage of their workforce." That seems to be one area where Windows could have the advantage. When speaking with David Schmoock, Dell's president of global sales and client solutions, he said many companies are deploying Windows 8.1-powered tablets and devices to employees.

Schmoock explained why Windows 8.1 tablets may seem more appealing than iPads for some businesses. In the consumer market, people consider a tablet to be a larger version of their smartphone, which is why the iPad has proven itself to be more popular among everyday users. But, commercial users and businesses view tablets as an extension of the PC, and since Windows 8.1 looks similar on both tablets and laptops it's a relatively easy switch.

Apple is integrating its iOS software and Mac software more tightly than ever with the latest version of OS X called Yosemite, and a larger screen would only make that transition easier.

We're expecting to learn more about Apple's plans for the future of the iPad later this year.

Specially-Developed Plastic Runners Let This Sled Slide On Sand

It might not provide the same technical challenge as skiing or snowboarding, but it's hard to argue that sledding isn't one of the best ways to take advantage of the winter. But what about those other snow-free seasons? Wouldn't it be fun to sled all year round? Of course it would, so Germany's KHW has developed the world's first plastic sled that works on sand instead of snow.

AMD Takes a Chip Shot at Nvidia's GTX 970 Controversy, Cuts Radeon R9 290X Pricing

by Paul Lilly

AMD 4GBDid anybody not see this coming?

What do you do when you see your enemy twisting in the wind? You strike, of course, and that's exactly what AMD predictably decided to do as rival Nvidia goes into damage control concerning the memory controversy on its GeForce GTX 970 graphics card. AMD and its partners have lowered the price of their Radeon R9 290X graphics cards to as low as $280 after rebate, or $300 without.

Credit AMD for waiting until precisely the right time to drop pricing. Had AMD done this when news first broke that there were performance issues on the GTX 970 when accessing onboard memory above 3.5GB, it would have been jumping the gun. From a strategic standpoint, it's brilliant to roll out the price cuts immediately after an Nvidia employee said he would help GTX 970 customers obtain a refund on their card, if they in fact decide to return it and are unable to get a refund on their own.

AMD's price cut could end up being the deciding factor for anyone who was on the fence about keeping their GTX 970 card. In reality, Nvidia's card is still a fantastic GPU for the money, at least for most users, and Nvidia originally said it's working on a driver update that should improve memory performance. That bit has since been edited out of the original post, though we suspect Nvidia will still try to fine tune things.

Nevertheless, picking up a competitive card for as much as $50 less than the GTX 970 will be tough for some gamers to ignore, especially those who have yet to upgrade. And to make sure the point is driven home, AMD's technical communications lead, Robert Hallock, took a jab at Nvidia on Twitter by posting a picture of the Radeon R9 290 with the caption, "4GB means 4GB."

Speaking of which, the Radeon R9 290 can be found on Newegg for as little as $250 after rebate, or $270 without.

RM Auctions Paris Next Wednesday – Our Favorites

by Frank

RM’s upcoming Paris sale features more than 60 cars, all of which are interesting and more than half of which are extraordinary—cars like an early Periscopio Countach, R-type Bentley Continental, 250 GT Lusso, a Delahaye Grand Prix racer, ex-works 911 S, Lancia 037 Stradale and many more. Whittling the list down to a few highlights took several revisions, but for the sake of time and space we’re sticking with these as our final four. Taking place this coming Wednesday, February 4th, find the full catalog of lots here.

RM Auctions Paris Next Wednesday – Our Favorites

First pick is this 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS (chassis 904-026, lot 144). Offered with extensive and interesting history from new, the car was heavily campaigned throughout central Europe for years with great success as documented with many period black and white photos in RM’s gallery. Now fully restored to what looks and sounds like a very high, factory-correct standard, the car is ready for vintage racing, street use or a mix of both.

RM Auctions Paris Next Wednesday – Our Favorites

Another streetable competition car, this 1978 Ferrari 308 GTB (chassis 24783, lot 149) was prepped to Group B specs by Spanish racer Antonio Zanini and factory-authorized tuning specialist Michelotto. Work included fitment of custom designed lightweight wishbones, AP/Lockheed brakes, thicker sway bars, quick-ratio steering, close-ratio gearbox and more, and car and driver clinched first place at its 1984 Rally Osuna debut–a full four minutes ahead of second place. Used minimally since a thorough mechanical refurbishment, it’s sold with extensive history including copies of original race prep invoices and many photos.

RM Auctions Paris Next Wednesday – Our Favorites

This 1965 Iso Grifo A3/C Stradale (chassis B 0216, lot 157) is an early exposed rivet aluminum bodied car, one of only 20 LHD examples believed to have been built. At some point shortly after first being sold the car returned to the factory where it was rebuilt with spec similar to that of the later Bizzarrini 5300 GT. Resprayed black and with rivets removed and filled, a subsequent 2012 restoration by a Turinese marque expert saw it returned to its original body configuration and correct Mela Verde color.

RM Auctions Paris Next Wednesday – Our Favorites

Rounding things off is this 1948 Tatra T87 (chassis 222328, lot 110). A late production run flat-nosed car, it’s very recently been restored and presents beautifully in photos. Dark pewter gray over caramel leather suits it perfectly, and this particular car is fitted with the large, factory optional sliding steel sunroof. Entirely hand-built and with a rear-mounted, air-cooled magnesium block V8, these cars are full of fascinating engineering and build details—check out the jewel like engine bay and door handle designs for a start.

Feds Caught the Silk Road Mastermind With... A Google Search

"Dread Pirate Roberts," the mastermind behind the online drug market Silk Road, seemed like a smart dude. He amassed a multimillion dollar fortune in drug money in just a few years! And he did it using the deep web and cryptocurrency usually associated with sophisticated cybercrime. But if 30-year-old self-styled "Robert Pattinson lookalike" Ross Ulbricht is found guilty of being the Dread Pirate Roberts, he will have revealed his identity in a remarkably unsophisticated way. A federal agent says he pinned the Silk Road on Ulbricht with a simple Google search.

Swedish company installs mark of the beast in workers

Better than ID companies

From the land which makes flat pack furniture, whose instructions defy the laws of physics, Sweden, comes the news that a new office block is implanting the workers inside of it with computer chips under their skin, instead of issuing them with ID cards.

In a move which will upset the born again Christians who insist that RFID chips are the “mark of the beast” which will bring about the reign of the Anti-Christ, and they claim that soon you will not be able to buy and sell anything without the beast's mark .Apparently somehow the chip is supposed to have a connection to the number 666.

The radio-frequency identification chips (RFID) are implanted under the skin of the workers’ hand, enabling them to open doors and use the photocopier. A

More than 700 people have been chipped at the Epicenter hi-tech office block in Sweden including BBC hack Rory Cellan-Jones, who said that when a tattooist put it in there “was a moment of pain – not much worse than any injection – and then he stuck a plaster over my hand”.

The chips could be used for more than just opening doors, including paying for food and drinks in the cafeteria with a touch of a hand, which is when the Born again Christian’s end times really does begin.

Hannes Sjoblad, chief disruption officer at the development, said we already interact with technology, and that these chips only make it more intuitive. He did not mention anything about Gog and Magoog, or Armageddon.

John McCain Threatens Anti-Kissinger Protesters With Arrest, Calls Them "Low-Life Scum"

He’s a thug, and a crook, and a liar, and a pseudo-intellectual and a murderer. Ok? Those things are factually verifiable.

– From the late Christopher Hitchens’ outstanding interview: Christopher Hitchens’ Polemic Against Henry Kissinger

Crazy John McCain is at it again. Nothing gets this guy more riled up than American plebs questioning status quo war criminals. I suspect much of this anger is rooted in his own legitimate fear about how history will remember his own legacy of remarkable stupidity.

Truly remarkable to see a Senator become so easily unhinged when protesters show up to condemn Henry Kissinger. See for yourself:
