Jimmy Fallon On The School Of 'SNL' And His Tendency To Smile Too Much

SpinnyNuNu

Sharing so I can listen to it later.

His kindergarten report card reminds me of mine. “Seana has trouble staying in her chair.” Not because I was getting up and wandering around, but because I was falling out of it. I remember trying to look at the underside of my seat while still sitting in it. I think that might have been why I fell out of my chair a lot :D

As a kid, Fallon smiled even when he was in trouble: "There was a report card from kindergarten and the comment from the teacher was, 'Jimmy smiles too much.' " Originally broadcast Oct. 12, 2017.

The fate of presidentially-pardoned turkeys

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
I'm sure most readers know this, but just for the record...
[I]t's kind of a hoax. I went to the farm where birds pardoned by presidents go, and I learned that this is not a story with a happy ending...

I visited Kidwell Farm to see how the turkeys pardoned in previous years were doing. I looked for some of the birds pardoned by Clinton, but couldn't find them. I couldn't find the Bush Sr. birds, or the Reagan turkeys, or Carter's, or any of the pardoned birds.

There is a sign saying Turkey Pen, and farmer Marlo Acock took me to it. But the pen was empty. Why? Well, the birds do come here, explained Acock, but they don't last

"We usually just find 'em and they're dead," he said.

Most of the pardoned turkeys only last a few months, Acock said. One died within days.
For more details on why they die so quickly, PETA offers a less nuanced view.

Turkey Gravy Salted Caramels

by joythebaker
Turkey Gravy Salted Caramels

This is me, creepin up behind you while you’re whisking together your Thanksgiving gravy tomorrow.  This is me, whispering in your ear as you’re pouring gravy into the gravy boat.  This is me, asking to lick the gravy spoon.  This is me, encouraging you to set aside (hide, really) some Thanksgiving gravy to transform into salty-sweet caramels this coming weekend.

WHAT?

Yes.

Turkey gravy, in all of its savory saltiness, in a CANDY.  It’s possible, it’s delightful, it’s inspired by the Detroit ladies of BonBon Chocolate.

Think about it.  You love a salted caramel.

Fun With Horrible People

by Southern Beale
SpinnyNuNu

The long, black, leather gloves and full leather skirt make her look like an evil villain in Austin Powers.

Those wacky kids are having a field day with the utterly tone deaf photo of Steve Mnuchin and his horrible wife Louise Linton, visiting their money. The “money shot” heard round the internet was just rife for mocking, and the internet did not disappoint.

Some Friday funnies:

These showed up after someone noticed that Linton was dressed like Kylo Ren from “Star Wars”:

The Mnuchins are truly horrible people and I shall make fun of them until they are run out of Washington, D.C. Someone said if your signature were on the U.S. money you’d take that photo too; maybe, but I sure as hell know better than to Tweet it out to the world.

How Rancho Tehama school staff saved lives during shooting rampage

SpinnyNuNu

These adults absolutely saved the lives of numerous children.

This part is incredible:

The lockdown protocol was about two-thirds of the way through when Neal rammed a school gate with a stolen white pickup truck, breaking through the fence and a lock. Neal then got out of the vehicle with an AR-type weapon, according to Fitzpatrick.

The head custodian poked his head around the corner of a building as staff was getting students into classrooms and was able to distract Neal, who fired several shots in the custodian's direction before his gun appeared to jam, Fitzpatrick said.

That much-needed time when Neal was distracted allowed the lockdown to be complete.

The heroic actions of staff on the campus of Rancho Tehama Elementary School in Tehama County likely saved the lives of countless children when a gunman opened fire on the school grounds during a rampage that left five victims dead.

The Only Thing I’m Going to Say about Louis C.K.

by Libby Anne
This wasn't about how admired he was. It was about how influential he was in the industry these women were trying to make a go in. Since reading Louis C.K.'s statement, I've also read several pieces about women whose careers were impacted, whether because they decided they couldn't go on tour with him or because his manager blacklisted them. This wasn't about admiration. It was about power.Click through to read more!

Crispy Parmesan Roast Cauliflower

by Kevin Lynch
Crispy Parmesan Roast Cauliflower
With the holidays coming I like to have some good side dish recipes at the ready for special meals and this crispy parmesan roast cauliflower is definitely on my short list! This side is so easy to make! You simply spread some parmesan cheese over the bottom of a baking dish, press the cauliflower florets into the parmesan and roast until the cauliflower is just tender crisp and the parmesan has melted and turned a nice golden brown. When the cheese cools a bit it gets nice and crispy; just like the cheese that oozes out of the sides of your grilled cheese sandwich and gets all sorts of nice and crispy and good! Yum! You can roast a few different veggies like this and cauliflower is my favourite and it's a great option for low-carbers. If you're looking for a side dish recipe over the holiday's you really can't go wrong with this tasty crispy parmesan roast cauliflower!

Carfentanil - "A dose as small as a grain of sand can kill you"

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

>>Given the purity of the substance seized, police estimated that the package could contain as many as 50m lethal doses – enough to wipe out the entire population of the country.

Holy fuck.

From a report in The Guardian:
Developed in the 1970s as a tranquilizer for large animals such as elephants and bears, the synthetic opioid has also been studied as a potential chemical weapon by countries including the US, China and Israel. It is thought to have been deployed with disastrous effects when Russian special forces attempted to rescue hundreds of hostages from a Moscow theatre in 2002.

But it only burst into public view last year after officials across North America began to warn that it was being cut with heroin and other illicit drugs, leaving a rash of overdoses and deaths in its wake.
“An amount as small as a grain of sand can kill you,” Dr Karen Grimsrud, Alberta’s chief medical officer, told reporters after traces of carfentanil were found in the bodies of two men who had overdosed. “Carfentanil is about 100 times more toxic than fentanyl and about 10,000 times more toxic than morphine.”..

The remarks came after Canadian police – protected by hazmat suits and oxygen containers – seized one kilogram of carfentanil hidden inside cartridges labelled as printer ink and which had been shipped to Vancouver from China.

Given the purity of the substance seized, police estimated that the package could contain as many as 50m lethal doses – enough to wipe out the entire population of the country.
Scary.  And I bet it's not hard to synthesize.  Could be aerosolized via drones in a city or at a stadium.

Buenos Aires bookstore

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

Oooooooh

"...Buenos Aires has more bookshops per inhabitant than any other city in the world, according to a recent study by the World Cities Culture Forum.

With a population of around 2.8 million, Buenos Aires has at least 734 bookstores – roughly 25 bookshops for every 100,000 inhabitants. Worldwide, only Hong Kong comes close, with 22 bookshops per 100,000, followed by Madrid in a distant third with just 16 and compared to a mere 10 bookshops for every 100,000 for London...

...opened as a theatre in 1919 and converted into a giant bookstore 15 years ago, the Grand Splendid still boasts the beautiful ceiling frescoes painted by an Italian artist almost a century ago. Around 1 million customers visit it each year to browse through its gargantuan 21,000 square feet showroom, or withdraw into one of the old theatre boxes perched for a leisurely read."
