The Nautical Roots of the Modern Tattoo

by Miss Cellania

v

Tattoos have long been associated with sailors, for good reason. Travelers from way back in history got tattoos to identify who they were and where they had been, as a portable and indestructible record. Sailors who explored the world picked up tattoos from all over.

Body art was particularly well-suited to the transient and dangerous nature of life at sea. “These sailors were traveling the world, and wanted to bring back souvenirs from places they had visited,” explains Eldridge. “Aboard a ship, you don’t have much room to carry fancy souvenirs, so you end up getting tattoos as travel marks.” By the late 18th century, navy records show that around a third of British and a fifth of American sailors had at least one tattoo, while other accounts reveal that French, German, and Scandinavian navies were also fond of getting inked.

But beyond mere records of their travels, tattoos also served a superstitious purpose among those living an unpredictable, and often risky, lifestyle. “Sailors are extremely superstitious,” says Eldridge, “so they would get specific tattoos to relieve this anxiety over their beliefs. There are stories of guys in the old, wooden-ship days who would get Christ’s head tattooed on their backs so if they got into trouble and had to take lashes, the person wielding the lash would be more sympathetic.”

Sailors had other tattoos for various reasons, like hinges on their elbows to ward off arthritis, and later, evidence of war campaigns they participated in. Collector's Weekly has much more in their history of sailors and their tattoos. Link

The Philosophers Love Song

by John Farrier

"Hegel, I Goethe Goethe Goethe have you 'cause I Nietzsche Nietzsche Nietzsche so bad." In a triumph of misunderstood lyrics, Jeremy Boor sings a love song using the names of philosophers, most of them German and while occasionally stretching the definition of "philosopher."

I'm Going Straight

by Bunny Ultramod
Porridge. A slang term for a prison sentence, "Porridge" is one of the more unusual situation comedies in BBC's history.

Its star was Ronnie Barker (previously), an exceptionally skilled comic character actor whose full chops were on display on his longrunning sketch comedy show The Two Ronnies, with Ronnie Corbett. (Here's a YouTube playlist of many of their best sketches.)

But The Two Ronnies only took about a third of a year to film, leaving Barker with plenty of time. And so the BBC tried a strange experiment: They produced seven pilots starring Ronnie Barker, called "Seven of One," and the most popular of the group would be Barker's new show. The winning episode was one called "Prisoner and Escort," scripted by the exceptional writing team of Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (Here it is on YouTube: Part one, Part two.) In it, Ronnie Barker played played Norman Stanley Fletcher, a small-time crook and habitual recidivist who is returning for a stretch at HMP Slade, a fictional prison in Cumberland.

Authors Clement and La Frenais extensively researched the show, going so far as to interview a former prisoner named Jonathan Marshall, who had authored a book called How to Survive in the Nick. The results were a finely detailed look at the experience of prison, including the slang, the day-to-day tedium, the complicated relationships between prisoners, and the minor victories enjoyed by prisoners in their endless run-ins with prison guards and personal.

Here is the entirety of Porridge, thanks to YouTube:

SERIES ONE:

Episode One: "New Faces, Old Hands"
Episode Two: "The Hustler"
Episode Three: "A Night In"
Episode Four: "A Day Out" (Part 1, Part 2)
Episode Five: "Ways and Means" (Part 1, Part 2)
Episode Six: "Men Without Women" (Part 1, Part 2)

SERIES TWO

Episode Seven: "Just Desserts"
Episode Eight: "Heartbreak Hotel"
Episode Nine: "Disturbing the Peace"
Episode Ten: "No Peace for the Wicked" (Part one, Part two)
Episode Eleven: "Happy Release" (Part one, Part two)
Episode Twelve: "The Harder They Fall" (Part one, Part two)

CHRISTMAS SPECIALS:

Special one: "No Way Out" (Part one, part two, part three)
Special two: "The Desperate Hours" (part one, part two, part three)

SERIES THREE:

Episode Thirteen: "A Storm in a Teacup" (Part one, part two)
Episode Fourteen: "Poetic Justice" (part one, part two)
Episode Fifteen: "Rough Justice" (part one, part two)
Episode Sixteen: "Pardon Me" (Part one, part two, part three)
Episode Seventeen: "A Test of Character" (part one, part two, part three)
Episode Eighteen: "Final Stretch" (part one, part two)

There was, as often happened with popular BBC series, a film version, released in the United States as Doing Time. Here it is in seven parts:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Once the series was completed, the BBC decided to follow the life of Norman Stanley Fletcher on his release from prison as he tries to go straight. The series was called Going Straight and featured a memorable theme song, but alas only lasted one season due to the unexpected death of series costar Richard Beckinsale (father of Kate).

Here are those episodes:

Episode one: "Going Home"
Episode two: "Going to be Alright"
Episode three: "Going Sour"
Episode four: "Going to Work" (part one, part two)
Episode five: "Going, Going, Gone"
Episode six: "Going off the Rails" (part one, part two)

In 2003, the BBC followed up with a mockumentary called Life Beyond the Box: Norman Stanley Fletcher, with only a brief clip available online. Further:Two episodes of "Porridge" were recorded as audio plays and released in LP form, and the show was also adapted as a stage version.

The show also inspired a short-lived American adaptation called On The Rocks, which was not as beloved, and has slipped into obscurity. Unlike Porridge, I could find no videos from the show.

In the meanwhile, Ronnie Barker revisited a number of the other sitcom pilots from the original Seven of One experiment. The first, Open All Hours, itself became a popular longrunning sitcom. "My Old Man" was adapted into a series starring Clive Dunn. "Spanner's Eleven" never had an afterlife, but here's a clip of the original. "Another Fine Mess" was arguably the oddest, featuring Barker and Roy Castle as Laurel and Hardy impersonators; the entire pilot is available. "One Man's Meat" would probably necessarily have been short-lived, as it was about a starvation diet; here's a clip featuring Prunella Scales of "Fawlty Towers."

Finally, Barker's favorite from the series was a pilot called "I'll Fly You For A Quid," about an inveterate Welsh gambler. It has been divided into three parts on YouTube, and part one seems to be missing, but here is two and three. Barker turned this into a short-lived sitcom, called "The Magnificent Evans."

Posts desde Skepchick: Armadura fantástica y redondeces

by Daniela
night-elves2-large-222x150

Red Sonja, Dynamite Entertainment

Night Elf, World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment

Por ejemplo, Conan o He Man.

Armaduras europeas comunes, siglos IX a XIII.

Comandante Shepard, Mass Effect 2, BioWare

Comandante Shepard, Mass Effect 2, BioWare

Tera online hizo esto muy, muy mal.

Tera Online, Bluehole Studio

¿No estás convencido?

Tali, Mass Effect 2, BioWare

5.4 Todos estamos desnudos bajo la ropa

¿Todavía quieres dibujar chicas guapas con poca ropa? No te voy a detener.

Samus, Sung Jin Ahn

Appleseed Book 1, Masamune Shirow

6: Resumen

Downloaders delimma

by TomMelee
Long-time favorite usenet indexing site NzbMatrix has closed its site as part of a recent sweep of DMCA related takedowns on similar sites. Other recent shutdowns include Newzbin, Newzbin2, and NZBsRUS.

While primarily a blow to people making use of such software as Sickbeard, CouchPotato, Headphones, and Sabnzbd+to automate their media downloads, the indexing sites provided a quick, user-friendly way to find media.

NZBmatrix and similar sites make use of the .nzb format, originally associated with the site Newzbin (defunct)to automatically associate all individual postings required to make a complete file. Newsgroup posting are historically broken into dozens-to-hundreds of individual files, often only 1.44Mb each, from back in the days when portable storage was limited to what could be found on a HD Floppy disk.

Some usenet users have always felt the sites presented a danger to the usenet community at large, simply because their ease of use attracted "n00bs" to the service and made it easy for copyright holders to issue DMCA takedowns for illicit media.

Other indexing sites exist, and enterprising users can take it upon themselves to host their own indexes via LAMP-based software like Newznab.

Initial reports indicate that the Morganelli group may have played a role in the takedown, however theirtwitter feed says differently. That same twitter feed is currently being subjected to much hate from users of the offending websites. The Morganelli Group exists to aid copyright holders by monitoring "pirate" networks for copyrighted media and then disabling the files as soon as possible.

Today Is Pretend to Be a Time Traveler Day

by John Farrier

omni

The only rule is that you can't participate if you're a real time traveler. This is just a game for us normals. Some suggestions on what to do:

- Greet people by referring to things that don’t yet exist or haven’t existed for a long time. Example: "Have you penetrated the atmosphere lately?" "What spectrum will today’s broadcast be in?" and "Your king must be a kindly soul!" [...]

- Walk up to random people and say "WHAT YEAR IS THIS?" and when they tell you, get quiet and then say "Then there’s still time!" and run off.

- Stand in front of a statue (any statue, really), fall to your knees, and yell "NOOOOOOOOO" [...]

- Airplanes are terrifying.  Also, carry on conversations with televisions for a while.

Johnny Cash – The Complete Columbia Album Collection [63CD] (2012)

by exy
Snob

HOLY SHIT

Weighing in at 63 discs, Johnny Cash‘s The Complete Columbia Album Collection certainly is hefty. Its only true rival is another massive Legacy set, the 2010 box of Miles Davis’ The Complete Columbia Album Collection which bests this 2012 box by a mere seven CDs, yet they share the same blueprint: each contains every one of their Columbia albums, including some posthumously released records (in Cash’s case, an expanded version of his debut Sun LP and a double-disc set of non-LP singles are also included), presented as mini-LPs in cardboard sleeves with no bonus tracks, all housed in a simple flip-top box, supported by bare-bones…

mp3 320 kbps | 5.2 GB | UL | TB
FLAC | 11.3 B | UL | TB

…annotation. Miles and Cash are genuine American icons deserving of such monumental tributes, but their legacies are very, very different, largely due to their respective styles. Country music always thrives on sheer product, a constant onslaught of new albums, hits collections, live records, Christmas collections, or sets of spiritual songs. During his 40-odd years at Columbia, Cash released three holiday albums, five gospel LPs, five live albums (a sixth, a 2002 archival release of a 1969 Madison Square Garden concert, is also here), three soundtracks, three albums recorded either with June Carter or the Carter Family, four duets albums (including two albums with the supergroup Highwayman), and one children’s album. That amounts to 25 records, a significant chunk of this set, and while they can hardly be written off — indeed, the live albums are among the best Cash recorded, particularly the pair of prison albums At Folsom Prison and San Quentin — their existence does illustrate how Cash embraced the rules of Nashville. He pumped out new product like clockwork and never shied away from country corn, singing entire albums’ worth of novelties (1966′s Everybody Loves a Nut, complete with classic artwork from Mad Magazine‘s Jack Davis) and solemnly reciting history lessons on such dusty bicentennial artifacts as America: A 200-Year Salute in Story and Song. Such moments of levity are hardly isolated. Cash cut scores of vaguely silly concept albums — Ride This Train, From Sea to Shining Sea, Ragged Old Flag, The Rambler, the latter narrating a cross-country car trip — he told jokes on-stage, he fell for the fashions of the day as he grappled with the fallout of hippies and progressive country, he indulged in nostalgia for both an imagined America and his own past, he took risks and sometimes failed. His patented train-track beat altered over the years, particularly after the passing of guitarist Luther Perkins, and he submitted himself to such indignities as being run through Chip Moman‘s Nashville hit-making machine in the ’80s (1985′s Rainbow may be his worst-ever record), but whatever happened, he always sounded like himself: clear, strong, and authoritative, he cut a near mythic figure yet remained grounded by his humor, sentiment, and ragged human spirit. All these contradictions and complications were smoothed over on his sober, sepia-toned American recordings, the ’90s comeback that celebrated his gravity at the expense of subtlety, but they’re vividly alive on this sprawling set thanks in no small part to the many albums that have never been available on CD prior to this. Just by its sheer size, a box this mammoth isn’t for everybody but The Complete Columbia Album Collection restores warmth, heart, and mess to an artist whose legacy was turning into a monochromatic myth.

Google's Lost Social Network

by chavenet
Google+ has been derided as a "virtual ghost town" and a "complete failure" unpopular even with Google employees. All of which has heightened the resentment shared by Reader fanatics. Today, they are a population dispossessed. Many have disappeared off the grid, while others struggle to rebuild communities that were, with a few keystrokes, deleted. All of them — the dental student in San Antonio, the academic librarian in Boston, the game developer in San Francisco — yearn for the scroll-tracked Shangri-La that was. They wonder why Google deep-sixed superlative features, years in the making, for an upstart social network, a Facebook clone. In the year past, the same question has been framed and phrased in a thousand different ways — why force an unproven social network on users at the expense of an organic one? [SLBF]

Tumblr Interviews Tard the Grumpy Cat, Learns What Makes Her Tick

by Rusty Blazenhoff

I’m not grumpy. I don’t like it when people call me grumpy.

On her recent visit to New York City, Tumblr interviewed the oh-so-adorable Tard the Grumpy Cat to learn what makes her tick. In short, her favorite food is tuna & Starbucks coffee cake, she’s afraid of heights, she has concerns about overpopulation, and while she didn’t enjoy being passed around on the Today show, she does enjoy sleeping…on her back. You can learn more about her in Tumblr’s Storyboard video.

Storyboard has a one-on-one with Grumpycat about Starbucks coffee cake, windows, and sleep.

Common Physics Misconceptions

Minute Physics quickly lets us in on some slight but important differences in what we thought we knew and what really is. Since I never studied physics, a lot of this was new to me.  -via Daily of the Day
