Johnno was a punk when we were all in our dads' bollocks
The article is two-years-old, but he's still kicking and The Captain recently tweeted a photo of him and Johnno.
Some video of Johnno on stage with the band.
Johnno also features in this video from forgotten second-wave goth rockers Every New Dead Ghost.
The Damned didn't have many actual music videos for Top of the Pops, but here they are:
* New Rose (1976)
* Smash It Up (1979)
* Plan 9, Channel 7 (1979)
* Grimly Fiendish (1985)
* Shadow of Love (1985)
* Is It a Dream? (1985)
* Anything (1986)
* Gigolo (1986)
* Alone Again Or (1987)
* Eloise.
The Damned, of course, are still going, and recently celebrated 35 years of anarchy, chaos and destruction despite several break-ups, and here they are in 1977. And here's a Peel Session.
The Damned have a unique place in the history of punk music, particularly '77 punk as we know it today. They were the first to tour the states and probably the first band to release an obviously punk single . New Rose was, of course, contested as the first punk single, but it did beat out The Sex Pistols in the UK.
Trouser Press has a relatively complete history, and they released their last original record in 2008, although anniversary re-issues of Damned Damned Damned with a previously unreleased bootleg of the band's very first gig at the 100 Club in 1976.
The band still tours, and has even dabbled in video games.
You can even learn how to dress the same way Mr Vanian did for a while in the 1980s when the band popped into some student housing near Scumbag College to save the world with pop music.
Bonus 1: a Time photo essay on early punk.
Bonus 2: Vanian has had a rockabilly-inspired band, The Phantom Chords and a TV show of sorts (Part1,Part2)
Some Damned trivia.
The Damned are now considered classic rock.
Sorry for party rocking

The Law of Cartoon Pants

Do you feel a need to wear pants while in public? Some people do, but not too many cartoon characters. Wolf Gnards analyzed the incidence of pants-wearing by cartoon characters and distilled the principles that animators tend to use when deciding whether or not characters should wear them. One of those apparent rules is that adult and male characters have more pants-free options:
Networks seem to demand more clothing on female and children characters, animals or not. For example, Yogi Bear's girlfriend, Cindy Bear, had to wear a skirt, while Yogi's crotch was free to the world. Or Gadget from the Chip & Dale had to wear more clothing than the others. No pants was obviously an option for the rest of the Rescue Rangers crew, but Gadget had to wear a jumpsuit, also known as, the maximum amount of clothing possible. Or take a look at the Shawn Bradley vehicle Space Jam and the introduction of Lola Bunny, a fully clothed female bunny. Making her one of the few clothed Looney Tunes characters. Likewise, The Tiny Toons were “tiny” versions of the adult Looney Tunes, and each character had their equal; Bugs Bunny to Buster Bunny, Daffy Duck to Plucky Duck, and so on and so on. Similar designs, similar personality traits, but clothed. The Tiny Toons mostly wore shirts or, at least, hats and shoes, whereas the adult Looney Tunes they were based on were nude.

Rare White Kiwi Chick Hatches at Wildlife Sanctuary
New Zealand’s Pukaha Mount Bruce received an early Christmas present when
their third white Kiwi chick hatched at the national wildlife center.
North Island Brown Kiwis with white plumage are extremely rare. This chick is the third white Kiwi ever born in captivity, according to center officials. The center is the same nursery where Manukura, the first white Kiwi and Mauriora, a second white Kiwi, was hatched in December last year.
The staff knew that the eggs, which were collected from the wild, had come from Manukura’s brown-feathered father, so they knew there was a 25% possibility of another white Kiwi, but it still came as a surprise.
A small number of North Island Brown Kiwi carry the recessive white gene which both the male and female must have to produce a white chick.
All three white chicks have the same father, who has been identified through his transmitter. Though the identity of the mother can’t be told for certain, center staff assumes she is the same because of the rarity of the white gene. There is a one-in-four chance of such a pair producing a white chick.
Local Maori iwi Rangitane o Wairarapa are delighted that Pukaha Mount Bruce has been blessed a third time. “We have always known the reserve at Pukaha Mount Bruce is a very special and spiritual place, this third white Kiwi is confirmation of what we have always known,” Rangitane chief executive and Pukaha board member Jason Kerehi said. The iwi will name this special chick over the next few days.
This white Kiwi is the seventh Kiwi chick to have hatched at the centre so far this season, and many more are expected. Another egg currently incubating in the nursery is from the same nest as this white Kiwi chick, so there is a 25% chance of a fourth white chick.
Within the Pukaha Mount Bruce reserve, Kiwis live as they would in the wild, but all males are tracked with transmitters because they incubate the eggs. Any eggs laid are taken to the center for incubation. Chicks are hand-reared and returned to the forest when they are about eight months old.
There are five species of Kiwi, all native to New Zealand, and all populations are declining. To protect the wild birds, a number of conservation programs, like this one at Pukaha Mt Bruce, have been established. These shy, nocturnal, flightless birds are the national symbol of New Zealand.

Mario Warfare, New Live-Action Military Mario Brothers Web Series
Mario Warfare is a badass new web series by Beat Down Boogie that gives the classic Super Mario Brothers video game a tough and fun live-action military spin. In episode one they give us a small taste of the intense action to come. Beat Down Boogie has filmed the first two episodes, but really want to create more to expand the story. They have started a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to help complete the series in 2013.
Bowser’s airships rain destruction on the Mushroom Kingdom. The King is missing, presumed dead. The Princess is on the run. A couple plumbers answer the call of duty and sign up to fight. Now Mario, Luigi (and a team of old school video game characters) are thrown into the gritty new world of first person shooters like COD and Battlefield.
Imagine “Super Mario Brothers meets Blackhawk Down.” With a healthy dose of humor. That’s our new web series, Mario Warfare! It’s a loving parody of classic video games and epic action-films.
