VA – Los Nuggetz: 60′s Punk, Pop and Psychedelic from Latin America (2013)
Los Nuggetz is a collection of ’60s hyper kinetic garage, punk, pop and psychedelic music from Mexico, Spain and Latin American countries. While the inspiration for this collection has been the enduring trend and influence of American garage and psych bands from the 60s, it is our hope that this will serve as an introduction to the amazing variety of Mexican and Latin American rock from that era. This is the missing chapter in the global history of Rock & Roll. The fuzz and fury of rock En Espanol with all the punk and pop elements that make it immediately listenable. Spanish interpretations of classic American and British songs that became popular around the world.
Much of this music has been extremely hard to find and often never reissued since the original…

Baby Red Panda Thriving at Binghamton Zoo
New York's Binghamton Zoo excitedly announced the birth of a male Red Panda, the first of its species to be born at there. The cub, named Zhin-Li (meaning "treasure"), is steadily gaining weight and showing all signs of thriving. It is the first offspring of mother Mei-Li and father Xiao-Li, paired together as part of the Red Panda Species Survival Plan.
"The simple chore of properly socializing them to allow coexistence within the exhibit was a major accomplishment," said David Orndorff, the Binghamton Zoo's Animal Curator. "Add to that that this is the first birth by this female and with a male that has never fathered cubs in the past, shows the dedication and commitment of the Binghamton Zoo's animal care staff."
Photo Credit: Melissa Grippin, Binghamton Zoo
The Species Survival Plan was created by AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) to ensure the long-term survival of captive species. This baby will continue in this program and when of age, will be paired with a female to breed at another zoo. The cub represents a "treasure" for the Binghamton Zoo, and also for the whole conservation community. There are roughly 175 Red Pandas located in zoos throughout the United States and Canada, but only about 60 individuals fall under the subspecies Ailurus fulgens refulgens (styani). These Red Pandas are distributed among 23 institutions, including the Binghamton Zoo.
This story continues, with more pictures of the cub, after the fold:
Zhin-Li may not be viewable for several months, as he spends most of his time with his mother in one of two nesting boxes. He also has access to a room not visible by visitors to the zoo. A camera and monitor system has been set up to to help zoo guests increase their chance of seeing the cub until he will be big enough to go out on exhibit.
Hipster White Lightning: The bizarre trendiness of making your own moonshine

A few years ago the BBC reported that young denizens of Brooklyn and other clusters of hipsters were making illegal moonshine in their tiny apartments. They managed, as usual, to take a relatively cheap hobby and spend thousands of dollars on gear for it, keeping entrepreneurs like Arkansas’ Colonel Vaughn Wilson in business.
The outlaw aspect of risking a $15,000 fine and five years in prison is likely part of the allure too. That and the possibility of the getting the temperature wrong during one point of the process and poisoning yourself and and anyone else dumb enough to imbibe your rancid artisanal hooch.
It didn’t take long for the safe and legal variants of moonshine to hit the market and for Bon Appetit to feature them.
Moonshine is now being served at trendy restaurants. That’s right, where there used to be a list of local microbrews or outrageously expensive tequilas or organic wines, there is a list of the flavored moonshines on offer. Hipsters have left behind those previous alcoholic obsessions, as well as absinthe, bastardizations of the martini, small-batch bourbon, and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Hooch is hip.
The safe, legally produced and distributed brands include NASCAR’s Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon and Howling Moon Moonshine. You can buy Troy & Sons’ Platinum Moonshine and Oak Reserve Moonshine at, among other places throughout the Southeast, Walt Disney World’s Wilderness Lodge.
Distillers are as pleased as highly spiked punch, because moonshine provides an immediate profit, as opposed to other sour mash products like whiskey that require years of aging in wooden barrels.
The manager of Husk restaurant in South Carolina tried to describe the taste of different kinds of moonshine to Bon Appetit, obviously struggling not to fall into wankerish wine-speak:
Compared to other clear spirits, you can definitely taste the corn. Sometimes there’s that cereal profile, and sometimes, like with white whiskey from a Tennessee distillery called Prichard’s, it has a little bit more of a sweetness, and that kind of comes forth, like a corn cake or johnnycake.
On a side note, further appropriation of Appalachian culture by hipsters (besides the unemployed film school graduates walking the Appalachian Trail this summer and horrifying locals by showing up unwashed and funky at local eating establishments along the way) is Stewart Copeland’s new documentary on buck dancing, Let Your Feet Do The Talkin’.

Bobby Womack – Everything’s Gonna Be Alright: The American Singles 1967-76 (2013)
Charly’s 2013 collection fulfills an underappreciated hole in Bobby Womack‘s somewhat cluttered discography: it rounds up the A- & B-sides of every single Womack released between 1967 and 1976.
There have been many similar compilations that cover this territory, but most focus on his ’70s recordings for United Artists, which is under- standable, as that’s his best and most popular work, but this Charly double-disc set is distinguished by those late-’60s sides for Minit and Liberty. Some collections, such as Razor & Tie’s 1994 set Lookin’ for a Love, dipped a toe in this water, but this is the most thorough immersion into an underappreciated part of Womack’s career, when he was cranking out cool, grooving uptown soul with echoes of…

…Chicago and Detroit. As he got closer to the end of the ’60s, funk and progressive psychedelic soul started to edge out this pop-soul — the grooves got deeper and funkier, plus he took a stab at more ambitious narratives and covers — and hearing this transition play out on Everything’s Gonna Be Alright is thrilling, as well as entertaining. Perhaps the packaging could be a little more handsome, but in sheer music terms, this is a necessary and long overdue addition to Womack’s discography.

Helen Love – Day-Glo Dreams (2013)
Since 1992, Helen Love have been happily cranking out punk-pop ditties about punk boys, bubblegum, crushes, tough girls, and, above all, Joey Ramone, on cheap synthesizers and tinny guitars. There have been little tweaks here and there as influences come and go (happy hardcore on Love and Glitter, Hot Days and Muzik, tons of vocoder on It’s My Club and I’ll Play What I Want To), but at heart the band stayed true to its obsessions over the course of countless singles and three albums. Released in 2013, Day-Glo Dreams represents something of a sea change for Helen Love, as there have been pretty drastic changes to both their sound and to the content of the band’s lyrics. This time out, all references to the ’70s and punk have been replaced by nods to…
VBR~254 kbps | 69 MB | UL | CL | MC
…the Human League and synth pop, the lighthearted lyrics are more often than not tinged with melancholy, and the cheapo synths seem to have been replaced by slightly less cheapo synths. Not that the band is any less cheesy — there are plenty of silly sound effects, corny drum sounds, and even synth strings on a couple tracks! But the most important things haven’t changed: Helen Love’s perfectly sweet vocals and her ability to write simple, candy pop melodies that will be stuck in your head for ages. Slightly more pro-sounding musical backing can’t do much to ruin that, and to be honest, it was time for a change. Writing silly sweet odes to Joey Ramone and celebrating punk boys/girls will only last you about 20 years or so. A little bit of real emotion (as displayed on the very sad “Our Mum and Dad” or the tenderly nostalgic “You and Stacy”) was overdue, as was some reality — it’s interesting that the songs seem more nostalgic about the time and place where Helen Love actually grew up (’80s Wales) instead of where she wishes she did (’70 N.Y.C.). If all this talk about improved sound and thoughtful lyrics is getting you worried, there are still plenty of goofy pop songs like “We Are All the Lo-Fi Kids” and “My Imagination” to remind you of the classic Helen Love and help get you past the shock of hearing Love sing about Michael Jackson instead of Joey Ramone, name-check Culture Club, and reimagine a-ha on the album’s best song, “Atomic,” but it’s all played and sung with enough energy and good cheer that it’s hard to resist getting on board with the adjustments the band’s made to its sound.
Vamos todos a Uruguay y fumar un porro.
Uruguay votes to create world's first national legal marijuana market. Proposals likely to become law, leading to innovative policies at odds with the 'war on drugs' philosophy.
The legalization of pot in Uruguay might embolden other Latin American governments to consider similar measures. Under Mr. Mujica, 78, an outspoken former guerrilla, Uruguay has emerged as a laboratory for socially liberal policies. A small nation of 3.3 million people, the country has also enacted a groundbreaking abortion rights law, moved to legalize same-sex marriage and is seeking to become a center for renewable energy ventures.

Oscar-Nominated Actress Eileen Brennan Dies at 80
Character actress Eileen Brennan passed away on Sunday in her Burbank home at the age of 80, according to her publicist. The cause of death was bladder cancer. Brennan, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance as tough Army captain Doreen Lewis in 1980's Private Benjamin, was an accomplished actress of stage and screen who was apt at playing both comedy and drama. Comedy-wise, she's known for her roles in Clue, FM, Murder by Death, and for Emmy-nominated guest spots on Taxi, Newhart, and Will & Grace.
Cat-speak: How to read your feline’s body language, a primer

Apparently, cats are far more complex and subtle in their behavior than dogs or even humans. Yet most cat owners fail to recognize what their feline friends are trying to communicate.
For example, as Nicky Trevorrow from Cat Protection explains, why does a cat claw and bite when you rub its tummy?
“When a cat throws itself on its side and shows its belly, most people misinterpret this behaviour and think that it wants its belly rubbed but will get grabbed by their hand and the cat will bite them.
“What the cat is actually doing is showing a greeting behaviour and showing trust. It is actually an abuse of that trust to stroke its belly. What the cat would rather you do is to give it a slight head rub.
“When a cat comes towards you with their tail upwards, it is a sign of their greeting. The best thing to do is to acknowledge their greeting and give their head a rub.”
After a survey of 1,100 cat owners, Cat Protection discovered that 75% of respondents did not know what a cat’s upright tail meant; 33% didn’t know what their cat was showing contentment by slow-blinking; while 50% thought cats show stress by licking their lips; and 65% thought purring was a sign of contentment (while it can actually be a sign of pain).
To help cat owners understand what their cat is saying, the Cat Protection charity has produced the following short film, which helps explain:
• The greeting – when the cat walks towards you with its tail up, it means it is saying hello
• The sign of trust – when the cat rolls on its back exposing its stomach it is showing it trusts you rather than wanting its belly rubbed.
• The leg rub – when the cats rubs its head and body against your legs it is saying you smell strange and is trying to mark you with its scent
• Flattened ears – when the cat flattens its ears it is frightened and needs somewhere to hide
• Licking of lips – while after eating this can just be it is cleaning itself, at other times it can be a sign of nausea or stress
• The slow blink – the cat will slowly close and open its eyes, turning its head to one side, meaning it is relaxed and is not feeling threatened
Now you know what little Chairman Miaow is saying. Though personally, I prefer dogs, because they’re fun, enthusiastically happy about life, and easy to beat at cards.

Skunk Kits Surprise Five Sisters Zoo
Caretakers at Five Sisters Zoo in Scotland weren't expecting any baby skunks— but one turned up in their skunk exhibit on June 4. Later that day they found an even bigger surprise: the second kit to appear was an albino. They believe that the parents are Stella, one of two regular black and white females, and the father is Strachan, an albino. The albino kit has been examined and identified as a female; the other kit has been a bit more elusive and hasn't been checked out yet. The kits are pictured here at three weeks old.
Life has not been so easy for Strachan. As an albino, his eyes are weak and he has a poor immune system, leaving him vulnerable to common diseases. With his pale coloring, he sunburns easily. The albino kit will encounter the same difficulties. It's likely that the albino skunks would not have survived in the wild. The normal black and white markings help to warn predators that a foul-smelling fluid may be squirted at them should they get too near.
"If I told you the words, you wouldn't believe them anyway." -- R. Berry
Though the Kingsmen's version of Louie Louie came a decade after the peak of the FBI's obscenity monitoring efforts, the public concern over what was initially treated as a novelty record by radio DJs (Google books preview), the FBI responded to volumes of letters inquiring into the actual lyrics, which some people thought were dirtier (or at least, easier to understand) when played at a slower speed. The FBI file includes an assortment of imaginary lyrics, actual lyrics, copies of record labels, letters from concerned parents, and government forms, which all concluded inconclusively: "unintelligible at any speed."
But why were the vocals so unclear? Lead singer Jack Ely's vocals are almost incoherent because of poor microphone placement and he was wearing braces that were recently adjusted. And the song was recorded in one take.
The Kingsmen's version was brought back to prominence in 1978 thanks to Animal House (YT clip), and has been covered by numerous bands (including a number of variations by Frank Zappa). There are even a few different CDs compiling various covers, as well as an LP. Oh, and there was that crazy 63 hour marathon of covers.
On Friday night, August 19, 1983, at 6:00 pm, KFJC began the broadcast of the world's longest Louie Louie marathon, which ran for more than two and a half days. The original vocalist for the Kingsmen, Jack Ely, flew down from Portland, Oregon, to meet Richard Berry for first time, and Berry performed the song. There were also more than 15 versions by unknown artists, which you can help ID (#445 was identified).
If that's not enough Louie Louie for you, there's the dated Louie Louie dot net (linked previously), and the updated Louie Report blog (previously), plus eplouie's YouTube videos.
You can now consider yourself prepared for April 11, International Louie Louie Day.
Belle Solo Is The Ultimate Hero For Little Girls

When I was a youngster, I related with Belle because we both always had our noses in books. I can't even imagine how excited I would have been to see Amy Mebberson's Belle Solo back then. Imagine, a princess hero that's smart, quick-talking, a blaster master and the owner of the fastest ship in the galaxy.
