Firefly stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk have rejoined forces on Con Man, a new Indigogo-funded project about a struggling actor living in the science fiction convention world. io9 sat down both actors to discuss the show, their careers, and the Mexican restaurant that first brought them together.

The perfect road trip across the US would take you to all the must-see landmarks and historical sites and minimize unnecessary driving, but figuring out the ideal path isn't easy. CS graduate research assistant and data tinkerer Randal Olson created an algorithm to solve this problem and come up with the epic road trip.
Game of Thrones: The Exhibition is in the middle of their second stop this year, in Stockholm, Sweden at the Kungsträdgården. The first installment in London was a huge hit, and this second outing looks to be just as popular. The exhibition opened on Friday, March 7th. Where John Bradley had been in attendance in London, for this Scandinavian leg of the tour, the show trotted out Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Yes, it is all in Swedish, but it’s worth watching because the host, Jonna Vanhatalo, goes through the entire exhibit, testing out all the different games and features. So for those of us in the non-Sky Atlantic zone for whom this will not be stopping by, you can get a good sense of the entire experience.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau showed up to open the event. There were actually quite a few Swedish celebrities that turned out for this event. That might be because they’re half convinced the show is actually set in Sweden.
There are actually five lifts to the “Top of the Wall.” Considering how few men there are that man Castle Black, if that were true in the show, they could almost all go up at once.
Instead patrons just stand in the lifts and experience for themselves. No word if they manage to also replicate the biting cold.

Cyanogens frispråkige VD Kirt McMaster, som tidigare sagt att han vill ta Android från Google, förutspår stora förändringar i mobilindustrin – ett skifte. McMaster säger i en intervju med Business Insider att jättar som Samsung kan ”vara stekta” inom en femårsperiod. Han menar även att Apple kan få problem i långa loppet.
Hans argument är uppstickare som säljer hårdvara till ett mer förmånligt pris än Samsung och att Apple inte konkurrerar i budgetsegmentet. Han nämner specifikt tillverkare på frammarsch som Xiaomi och Micromax, som nu är världens tredje respektive tionde största smartphonetillverkare enligt viss statistik.
Samsung har fått större konkurrens i växande marknader som Kina och Indien. McMaster hänvisar även till tidigare jättars fall, som Nokia och Research In Motion (RIM).
Cyanogenchefen vidareutvecklar avslutningsvis sitt uttalande om att ”ta Android från Google”. McMaster menar att operativsystemet kommer nå över fem miljarder användare och bli den största och snabbast växande datorplattformen i universum.
Med tanke på det enorma antalet Androidanvändare tror McMaster att det finns stort utrymme för avvikelser som Cyanogen som han menar kommer kunna nå många människor och vinna i slutändan.
På frågan om varför Android inte är öppet nog i och med systemets öppna källkod säger McMaster att Android och IOS är skal för Googles och Apples tjänster och att allt annat är separata applikationer. Hans vision är att andra företags tjänster ska kunna få lika mycket utrymme och stor prioritering i Android som Googles egna.

För några månader sedan ställde Maria frågan ”äger du dina e-böcker?” här på Tystnad och kom fram till att svaret förmodligen är nej. På sätt och vis känns det mycket relevant för två domar från Europeiska unionens domstol, C-479/13 och C-502/13, som släpptes i dag. Domarna meddelar att Frankrike och Luxemburg inte tillåts låta den mycket lägre bokmomsen gälla även för e-böcker. En e-bok är nämligen inte en bok, en vara. En e-bok är en tjänst.
Enligt artikel 24.1 i mervärdesskattedirektivet avses nämligen med ”tillhandahållande av tjänster” varje transaktion som inte utgör en leverans av varor, och enligt artikel 14.1 i direktivet är en ”leverans av varor” en överföring av rätten att såsom ägare förfoga över materiella tillgångar. Till skillnad från vad Republiken Frankrike har gjort gällande kan tillhandahållande av elektroniska böcker inte betraktas som en ”leverans av varor” i den bestämmelsens mening, eftersom en elektronisk bok inte kan kvalificeras som en ”materiell tillgång”. Den fysiska bäraren, som möjliggör läsning av boken och som skulle kunna kvalificeras som en ”materiell tillgång”, saknas nämligen – såsom framgår ovan i punkt 28 – vid leveransen. Det betyder att tillhandahållande av elektroniska böcker ska kvalificeras som tillhandahållande av tjänster vid tillämpningen av artikel 24.1.
Dessutom anges det i artikel 7.1 i genomförandeförordning nr 282/2011 att tjänster som tillhandahålls på elektronisk väg i den mening som avses i mervärdesskattedirektivet är ”tjänster som tillhandahålls via Internet eller ett elektroniskt nät och som till sin natur är sådana att tillhandahållandet huvudsakligen är automatiserat, kräver ett minimalt mått av mänsklig inblandning och inte kan utföras i avsaknad av informationsteknik”. Domstolen konstaterar att tillhandahållandet av elektroniska böcker motsvarar denna definition.
Det här är problematiskt ur två perspektiv. För det första ekonomiskt, förstås, när medlemsländerna inte tillåts tillämpa samma momsnivå på e-böcker som på tryckt material. För det andra eftersom det är ytterligare ett steg mot att definiera tillgång till e-böcker som en tillhandahållen tjänst snarare än dokument man köper och äger. Och vilka rättigheter har man egentligen till en tillhandahållen tjänst?

What can we, as writers, photographers, artists, and bloggers learn from American inventor Thomas Alva Edison? Plenty, as it turns out. Edison is famous for many inventions, including the phonograph, a commercially viable lightbulb, and the motion picture camera.
His success resulted from trial and error, and many, many failed experiments before creating a lightbulb that could last 1200 hours, just as an example. He could have stopped. He could have given up. He chose to frame his work in a positive light:
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Edison’s philosophy is particularly compelling to anyone who does creative work:
Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety nine percent perspiration.
How many rough drafts, spoiled drawings, and blurry photos have you created before that stroke of serendipity? Are you looking at a failure, or an important stepping stone toward a masterpiece?
If you’re waiting for inspiration, you might be left waiting, giving up time that could be better spent creating. Get writing, get your watercolors out, pop your camera in your pocket and do a photowalk in your neighborhood. If you focus on being consistent with process, inspiration will find you, and what you produce will show it.
