Se Galaxy S6 Edge slängas i golvet med oväntat resultat

by Lars A

Allow Clean Reader to swap 'bad' words in books – it's a matter of free speech

Allow Clean Reader to swap 'bad' words in books – it's a matter of free speech:
Writers who are up in arms over the ebook app’s ‘profanity’ blacklist have no right to dictate how the reader should read their books.

Cory Doctorow says:

My latest Guardian column, "Allow Clean Reader to swap 'bad' words inbooks – it's a matter of free speech" expands on last week's editorial
about the controversial ebook reader, which lets readers mangle the
books they read by programatically swapping swear-words for milder
alternatives.

I agree with the writers who say that the app is offensive, and that
it makes books worse. Where I part company with Clean Reader's
detractors is where they claim that it is -- or should be -- illegal.
If we don't have the right to make our computers alter the things we
show us, what happens to ad blockers, or apps that auto-annotate
politicians' claims, or warn you when you're reading an article in a
newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch?

Free speech isn't just the right to express yourself, it's also the
right not to listen. I disagree with the decision to use Clean Reader,
and that's why it's a free speech issue. If you don't support the
legal right to utter speech you find offensive, you don't support
speech at all.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't tell people not to use Clean Reader, or
withhold our books from Clean Reader's store. It means we can't call
for Clean Reader to be banned.

Behold the Iron Throne as rendered in carrots, golf clubs, and dildos

by Dan Selcke

Carrot Throne

“Have you ever seen the Iron Throne? The barbs along the back, the ribbons of twisted steel, the jagged ends of swords and knives all tangled up and melted? It is not a comfortable seat, ser. Aerys cut himself so often men took to calling him King Scab, and Maegor the Cruel was murdered in that chair. By that chair, to hear some tell it. It is not a seat where a man can rest at ease.”

So spoke Stannis Baratheon of the Iron Throne, the chair from which the kings of Westeros ruled their realm. It is a magnificent chair, a punishing chair, a chair that cuts those who sit upon it both on the outside and the inside. The battles fought to win the Iron Throne have claimed thousands of lives, and there’s no telling when its lust for blood will finally be satiated.

Anyway, here’s what it would look like if it was made out of silly materials.

First up is the Carrot Throne, constructed by a New York-based Game of Thrones fan out of shredded carrots for his rabbit, Wallace, who makes an appearance toward the end of the video embedded below. The sculptor admitted in a Reddit thread that he later ate most of his creation, proving that, out of the three thrones in this post, the Carrot Throne is the most delicious.

Next up is the Golf Club Throne, made by the folks over at Direct Golf out of over 300 clubs. Of the three thrones in this post, the Golf Club Throne is the most similar to the actual Iron Throne, since it’s mainly made out of irons. Get it? Irons? You do? Okay.

Golf club throne

Finally, we have the Dildo Throne, put together by UK bondage company Bondara as part of its upcoming “Game of Bones” product line. The image below is NSFW, since it is of a chair covered in dildos, so scroll down with caution.

Dildo-Throne-2

Bondara used 200 dildos to create this particular piece, which could be yours if you win the contest Bondara is currently running. Of the three thrones in this post, the Dildo Throne is the one you want to be most wary about actually sitting on, and if you do, at least put down some kind of tarp.

Watch how the Dildo Throne was constructed below, and then wash your hands.

Jesse L. Martin Sings Gospel Version of “The Ballad of Serenity” [VIDEO]

by Lauren Berkley

Jesse L. Martin — formerly of Law & Order fame and currently on The Flash — is also a Broadway veteran (RENT, anyone?).

He’s also partnered with Rick Cosnett and Carlos Valdes, two of his Flash co-stars, for a Kickstarter project called “The Letter Carrier”.The musical short film would tell the story of a black family hiding from slavery in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1860s.

Joss Whedon reportedly donated a large sum of money to the $50,000 production and to show his appreciation, Martin, Cosnett, and Valdes sang an a cappella version of “The Ballad of Serenity.”

Leave Yourself Wanting More

by zenhabits
By Leo Babauta

I think most of us have a tendency to do as much as we possibly can. But doing less might be better.

When we go to a great restaurant, we want to try all the dishes, eat as much of the delicious food as we can. And we leave overstuffed, sometimes painfully so, and our waistlines expand.

When I go for a run, often I’ll want to run as far or as hard as I can … and then I’m exhausted, and less likely to want to run tomorrow.

When we go on a trip to a new country, we want to see everything, do as much as possible, and that leaves us exhausted.

When we work or read online, we go from one task to the next, continuously, quitting only when we’re spent, well past what might be healthy for us.

How can we counter the tendency to want to do as much as possible?

Leave yourself wanting more.

The other day I went out for a run, and I really wanted to push myself to my limit. I let that desire go and did a moderate run, leaving some gas in the tank. The next day, I wanted to run some more, and I did. Today I’d be happy to go for another run, though maybe I’ll do something else instead. It’s sustainable and will make the habit last longer.

If you sit down for a meal, don’t try to eat as much as possible. Eat less. Leave the table wanting a little more. It won’t kill you. This is something I’m working on myself, but it takes practice. The result, though, is that you feel healthier and your waistline thanks you.

When you travel, don’t try to see everything. See a few things, and take your time. Leave the new city knowing that there’s more to see that you are leaving for next time. Leave yourself wanting more.

When you’re on the computer, shut it down before you’re done with everything. You’ll never be done with everything, and shutting down early means you’ve reserved some of your mental energy for other pursuits offline. You’ll be raring to go tomorrow. You won’t be as spent.

Let’s do less, and leave some in reserve. And enjoy the less that we do even more.

Proof That Science Fiction Is the Literature of the Future, and That I Am the Prognostication MASTER

by John Scalzi

In The Android’s Dream, which I wrote over a decade ago now, I reached into the thinky crevasses of my brain to conceive of a thing that no human had dared to dream of: white chocolate M&M’s. Yes! I was the first! They came from my very thinkmeat! And people said to me then, well, hold up there, Scalzi. Spaceships and aliens are all very well, but white chocolate M&M’s? That’s too radical an idea! And then they laughed, nervously.

WELL WHO IS LAUGHING NOW, PEOPLE:

Yes. Arthur C. Clarke had communication satellites, Robert Heinlein had waterbeds, and now I have white chocolate M&M’s. I predicted this magnificent confection of the future! I did! Me! Alone!

YOUR WORLD IS WHAT I HAVE MADE IT, PUNY HUMANS. PARTAKE OF THE PEARLESCENT PRODUCT OF MY PRODIGIOUSLY UNPARALLELED PROGNOSTICATION.

I’ll take my Grand Master award now, if you please.

Watch: Monica Lewinsky delivers a brilliant and passionate TED Talk about ending online harassment and the “culture of humiliation”

I was in the audience when she gave this talk. It’s powerful and moving and wise. Watch it, if you can, and think about compassion.

Hey Wil. You voice a character in Codename Steam. So does Adam Baldwin. Doesn't that make you a hypocrite? You think people shouldn't go to a panel with him but you are willing to be in a video game with him? You should have refused the offer.

I’m going to give you the presumption of sincerity in your question, though this sounds an awful lot like sealioning, and give you an honest and hopefully enlightening answer.

We all have to work with and for people we don’t necessarily like all the time. That’s a reality of life and earning a living. Choosing to attend a talk or a panel or something like that is entirely different from what we do for our jobs. You’re making a very specious comparison, which I’m having a hard time not deciding is just a straw man.

There are lots of people in the world of genre fiction who have different values and beliefs than I do, but he is the only one who consistently goes out of his way to be a dick about it. I won’t attend a convention if he is among the guests, because he’s a jerk (and I’m not alone). At Calgary Expo a couple years ago, — before he had ever said a single word to me in person — he talked a bunch of shit and insulted me in the green room, embarrassing himself and making the entire room uncomfortable. He went on a rampage against me on Twitter during ECCC that same year — again, before he had ever met me in person — and when asked him what his problem was, he made a bunch of excuses about being “provocative” because it’s great for getting attention from “all the idiots” who follow him on Twitter. Then he went right back to attacking me, and tried to send his little mob of protobullies after my wife, because of reasons.

And not that it matters, but when I was cast in Codename: STEAM, I didn’t know who the other actors were. I didn’t find out who else was in the game until months after I’d recorded my parts. And even if I had known who the cast was? I still would have done the job. It’s a great game, it’s a great character, and all the actors did a great job with their parts — including Adam Baldwin.
