Before You See Shang-Chi, You Might Want to Watch (or Re-Watch) These Marvel Projects

by Germain Lussier

Are you ready to see Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings? Are you sure? Obviously, everyone is excited to check out the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, for the most part, Shang-Chi tells its own standalone origin story. However, there are a few pieces of MCU history you could revisit…

i bought some mead the other day for the sole purpose of comparing it to your description in american gods and you know what??? you’re totally right

The tragedy of Mead is that there’s wonderful mead out there and there’s awful mead out there. It’s as if there was beer better than any beer you’ve ever tasted, and beer that tasted as if it had already gone through someone’s digestive system once, and you didn’t know which kind you were likely to get if someone offered you a beer.

The awful mead seemed to fit with American Gods better.

Capybaras Are Waging Class War in Argentina

by Dharna Noor

You know how capybaras always seem to have a slightly skeptical look on their faces? Turns out what they’re skeptical of might be rich people’s bullshit. Now, in Argentina, they’re fighting back. Groups of the charismatic rodents have been causing a ruckus in the fancy-pants gated community of Nordelta, crapping in…

The journey to my new (first) tattoo!!!!!!!!!!

“of his own volition” I CRIED

The angel hourglass is from the illustrated edition, but the demon hourglass I asked to have customized - I always hated when the books show Crowley with leathery wings despite clearly stating angel and demon wings are the same save for grooming. So I wanted black feathery wings with a snake tail and my amazing artist obliged! I even shaped the tail like Crowley’s tattoo.

Best part of course is that Neil did Crowley’s handwriting on the show, so it’s like having Crowley’s writing on me too!

I mean, I did do the Crowley handwriting on the show…

by Matt Novak

A staggering 94.2% of adults in England have antibodies for covid-19, according to a new report from the UK’s Office of National Statistics. Roughly 80.7% of England’s population has been fully vaccinated, suggesting the rest of the 94.2% acquired antibodies through natural infection with the coronavirus.

Det tidsenliga och otidsenliga

by anna

I Accidentally Recorded At Least 682 Gigabytes of Video of Myself Without My Knowledge

by Tom McKay

It’s happened to all of us: You’ve been browsing your hard drive and found hundreds of gigabytes of lengthy video files of the inside of your office, apparently filmed without your awareness. Dozens or possibly hundreds of hours of footage of whatever you’re up to when you don’t think you’re being observed, and you…

Marvel’s Hawkeye Is Coming Home for Thanksgiving

by Molly Templeton

Your Thanksgiving viewing is set: Marvel’s long-anticipated Hawkeye series, starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, finally has a premiere date. It’ll debut on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24th!

Disney+ announced the date with an exclusive (if unremarkable) look at the show’s two stars:

Hawkeye will introduce Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, who—in the comics, at least—idolized Hawkeye and eventually took up his mantle. She’s perhaps best known from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s run on the Hawkeye comics, in which she and Barton worked together to stop the “tracksuit mafia” from running Clint’s neighbors out of his Bed-Stuy apartment building. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Renner describes the show’s Kate like this: “She has a wonderfully annoying and equally charming manner about her, because she’s such a fangirl of Hawkeye. The relationship grows from that, but the biggest problem for Clint is Kate Bishop and the onslaught of problems that she brings into his life.”

As much as you can read anything into this image, it looks like either Clint Barton has found Kate’s training space, or they’re doing some training together. (But this is way too much color for it to belong to Clint “I have no fun, ever, what is fun” Barton alone.)

Florence Pugh, who played Yelena in Black Widow, is also set to appear in Hawkeye, which makes a lot of sense now that we’ve seen the post-credits scene in Widow.  The show also stars Vera Farmiga as Kate Bishop’s mother, and Alaqua Cox as Echo/Maya Lopez, who may be getting her own spinoff series before too long.

Hawkeye is the fifth Marvel series to air on Disney+ this year, following WandaVisionThe Falcon and the Winter SoldierLoki, and the upcoming What If…?, which begins August 11th. Ms. Marvel is expected to arrive this year as well, but a release date hasn’t so much as been hinted at yet.

Hawkeye premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24th.

I mean, it’s actually not funny. Stoats were introduced to New Zealand by idiots who brought them to try and deal with the rabbits they had previously introduced to New Zealand, who were breeding like rabbits. And the stoats went “hurrah! A land where birds have no predators and some of them even lay their eggs in burrows! Let us feast in this new land!” So dealing with stoats is a real problem.

But Stoat on the Loose is such a great title. And it’s obviously followed up by Stoat on the Loose 2: Stoat in the Big City and Stoat on the Loose 3: Stoats in Space.

I Will Be Chairing DisCon III!

by Mary Robinette Kowal

I have some exciting news to share with you all today. It’s official: I’ve accepted the role of Con Chair for Discon III, the 79th Worldcon. I’ve met with the department heads, and I can tell you now that they are a wonderful, highly competent group of people. I am thrilled to be working with them; I could not possibly ask for a better team to support an inclusive and successful Worldcon.

The science fiction and fantasy community is beautiful, diverse, and filled with excellent people who care deeply for one another. It has long been important to me to give back to that community in any way I can. I’ve made so many friends, met so many loved ones. Being able to serve the community is something that brings me happiness, joy, and a sense of belonging – and I want everyone to have a chance to experience that joy at Worldcon 79.

As you may know, I am a finalist in two categories for the Hugo awards this year. To prevent conflicts of interest, we will be maintaining a full firewall between myself and the independent subcommittee responsible for the voting and administration of the 2021 Hugo Awards. Maintaining the integrity of the awards is deeply important to me, and one of my conditions for considering the role was that we maintain that firewall. Any questions about the Hugo Awards should be addressed to hugoadmin@discon3.org.

I encourage you all to read the full announcement with additional information over at DisCon III, and, further, I hope to see you all in December – whether that be virtually or in person!

State Prisons Fueled Covid-19 Spread in Their Areas Last Spring, Study Suggests

by Ed Cara

New research out Tuesday supports fears that at least some prisons in the U.S. have been a breeding ground for the pandemic. The study found a link between increased cases of covid-19 during the first wave last year and counties where state prisons were located. Most of these cases were likely the result of the…
