The City of Hoboken is implementing a faster, more efficient, less expensive, and longer-lasting approach to repairing potholes and will be completely repaving more than 50 blocks of roadway beginning this spring.

The City has contracted for “Pothole Killer” trucks to make repairs city-wide. With spray injection technology, a single vehicle operator controls a hydraulic boom, which clears the pothole of debris, applies liquid asphalt to fill and seal it, and then tops it off with a dry aggregate coating. The whole process takes roughly 90 seconds per pothole.

“I thank Director Pellegrini for bringing this great new technology to Hoboken that will save us money and make long-lasting repairs faster than ever before,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “We’re committed to quickly completing these repairs and repaving more than 50 blocks of our worst roads this spring.”

In three days in January and two in April, a single Pothole Killer truck filled nearly 1,000 potholes. The truck will continue to be used to make repairs in the days ahead. Residents can assist by reporting potholes via www.hoboken311.com or through the Hoboken 311 application for iOS and Android. The City is coordinating with Hudson County for repairs to County roads, especially 1^st Street and Observer Highway.

“In the past, we used cold patch to temporarily repair potholes and then had to make permanent repairs in the spring with hot asphalt when the asphalt plants opened,” said Environmental Services Director Leo Pellegrini. “To make matters worse, the cold patch material would often be ripped out, requiring us to contract for heavy duty equipment to vacuum up the gravel and rocks from roads. This new approach eliminates an entire step and is faster, safer, less expensive, and even works in below freezing temperatures. In addition, by not tying up our resources on repairing potholes, our crews are all focused on cleaning up our streets now that all the snow has melted.”

So far, the Pothole Killer has repaired hundreds of potholes and utility cuts along Washington Street, which is planned for a full repaving in 2016. In addition to repairing potholes, more than 50 blocks of roadway are scheduled for repaving, including the following streets:

• 5^th Street (Jackson St to Madison St)
• 6^th Street (Jefferson St to Monroe St)
• 8^th Street (Hudson St to Castle Pt Terr)
• 9^th Street (Hudson St to Castle Pt Terr)
• 11^th Street (Willow Ave to Washington St) – following completion of PSE&G work
• Bloomfield Street (Observer Hwy to 14^th St) – 10^th St to 14^th St following completion of PSE&G work
• Henderson Street (Observer Hwy to Marin Blvd)
• Jackson Street (Paterson Ave to 4^th St)
• Madison St (13^th St to 15^th St)
• Monroe Street (Newark St to 3^rd St)
• Newark Street (Washington St to Hudson St)
• Observer Highway (Hudson St to Henderson St)

The latest addition to the Nobis Group, Miss Clara Hotel opened its door last year, taking over a former private girls school originally built in 1900. Named after the original headmistress, the grand art nouveau site received a full makeover courtesy of Swedish architect Gert Wingardh. Seven storeys have been rebuilt using sustainable materials, keeping the original structure intact and preserving as many original features as possible. The 92 rooms work with a typically restrained, minimal Scandinavian approach. Two key elements stand out, natural light exploited by frosted glass doors and wide windows, and those beautiful dark herringbone parquet floors, setting the color palette for the entire room. The owners describe “the authentic craftsmanship, beautiful aesthetics and solid raw materials,” that mark the entire build. The work of local sign-makers Holmquistsign demonstrate the careful approach taken by the hotel, your average corporate stop this is not.

Winter weather aside, we’ve always been fans of quality knitwear. Not only will it save your sweet tokhes in the frigid cold, there’s also a level of intrinsic comfort associated with a good, solid knit. Lately, sustainability has taken the fore in fashion, so we were delighted to stumble across Nido, an Argentinian company that crafts hand-knit accessories and clothing from 100% sheep’s wool and un-dyed goat and llama wool.

Every garment is completely handmade, using age-old processes passed down generationally. In a “Cool Hunting” article from last September, Nido founder Julia Racket, a former graphic designer, had this to say of the brand: “Since I don’t come from the world of fashion, I take design in a broader sense… The design process begins with decisions of textures and dyes.” Prior to the dying, the soon-to-be wool is sheared from sheep or goats and then hand-spun with a treadle and wheel to create a thread of wool. This process is executed by Argentinean artisans, which assures each garment will have the individual marking of its creator.

Visitors are treated to an unobstructed view below, the participating engineers using balance and opposing tension and compression techniques, eliminating the need for beams and bars to lift the structure, resulting that a feeling of floating that may have weaker stomachs flipping. The closest most of us with get to the unique and idyllic landscape with mind-blowing views to match.

Predawn sunlight strikes the South Rim of Arizonas Grand Canyon in this picture submitted to the recent Your Shot assignment First Light. A cold winter storm had passed through the region the day prior, writes photographer David Stoker. I had driven to the Grand Canyon in anticipation of the storm. I remember the morning being particularly cold as I hiked along the rim awaiting the arrival of the sun. The skies were still overcast, but a small break in the clouds allowed a single ray of sunlight to shine through, illuminating a small portion of the butte below.
