Nathan Fielder Describes 'Nathan for You' as "A Social Experiment"

by Megh Wright
by Megh Wright

"I can understand why people would call it that, but I don’t really see the stuff I do that way. Pranks are more hidden camera. Our show uses very little hidden cam. It's closer to a social experiment. Everything is visible. The only thing we do hide is people who don’t know what the pitch is, but that's standard for a reality show. They never let people in on the full context."

- Nathan Fielder explains why he doesn't classify his Nathan for You segments as pranks in a new interview with The Daily Beast, which also covers his admiration for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

Jenny Lewis – “Just One Of The Guys” Video (Feat. Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart & Brie Larson)

by Stereogum
Nate Haduch

what a band she has!

Later this month, Jenny Lewis returns with The Voyager, her first solo album in six years. It’s really great. You’ll like it if you like things that are great. Lewis directed her own video for “Just One Of The Guys,” the Beck-produced lead single. And to play her backing band, she put together an enviable lineup of movie stars: Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson. (Lewis herself is also a movie star of some note; word to The Wizard.) In the colorful clip, all the ladies dress up in mustaches-plus-tracksuits dirtbag drag, making me wonder if there are actually any dudes who fit quite this stereotype. Working theory: They’re all pretending to be members of Korn. It’s a fun and poignant video, and you can watch it below.

Jesus, girl

Lana Del Rey is about to release her excellent sophomore album, Ultraviolence, and to promote that record, she is giving some kinda provocative interviews. First was the “feminism is not an interesting concept” interview she did with FADER. She then told Clash she considers quitting music every day (“It’s still not really worth all the bullshit”). Today, the Guardian posted their piece on LDR, which opens with the singer saying, “I wish I was dead already.”

Is Apple Abandoning The Standard Headphone Jack?

by Stereogum
Nate Haduch

Oh brother, abandoning another standard

When Apple announced that it was buying Beats Electronic for $3 billion, way more than the company was valued at, people were confused, and Apple’s stock price took a plunge. As it turns out, though, that purchase may have been an evil-genius move. Forbes speculates that Apple may be moving away from the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. The company has submitted specifications for headphones that will connect to its very own proprietary Lightning port, which means standard headphones won’t work with it. If they go through with this, you’ll have to buy Apple headphones if you want to use them with Apple devices.

Total Control

by dissensous

After a Sub Pop single, a split with Thee Oh Sees and some well worked up anticipation, Total Control follow up Henge Beat with an album that's twice as strong and hits even harder. They still take their tastes all over the map of influences but this time they seem to find a natural flow from the hard gnashing peaks of post-punk grit to the gloss of synth pop and a few dosed-out wanders through the valley of Benzedrine pop. Typical System turns corners not so much at a whip snap but rather at a cautious creep, peering around a well thought out maze of knuckle tough back alleys throughout its course. The band's always been a veritable who's who of Aussie talent but they all seem to have gelled a vision of bile soaked, black neon coated restraint. The album proves that the ideas just bubbling through on their previous album, and beginning to distill by the time they hit that split with Oh Sees, have now taken root and grown hold in vines that seek to strangle behind the beauty. And there is plenty of beauty here, tinged with darkness yes, but the shimmer in "Flesh War" and "Safety Net" is definitely more refined than I'd ever expected of the band. This vaults itself into the essential corners of 2014 for sure.

SNL breakout start Kate McKinnon was on Conan last night, where she talked about how she developed both her wonderful Justin Bieber and Ellen impressions as well as the "Dyke & Fats" sketch she did with Aidy Bryant. The trick to the Bieber impression is pretending to be a puppy who just piddled on the rug, it turns out, just in case you want to try it yourself.

Here's a scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey, with Archer and Bob's Burgers voice actor Jon Benjamin as the voice of HAL the computer. The video comes from Late Night Basement, a live Brooklyn comedy show hosted by Chris Rose at which Benjamin was a guest. Hopefully at some point, Jon Benjamin is able to record the entire HAL audio track so that it can be edited into 2001 and that will just be the version everyone watches from now on.

There are lots of new shows debuting on the major networks this fall, but none look as delightfully strange and different as Fox's midseason selection The Last Man on Earth, which is produced by 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller and stars SNL's Will Forte as the planet's seemingly only man on a quest to find another human.

st. vincent confounds twitter

Tonight’s SNL season 39 finale addressed the week’s big viral video (Solange attacking Jay Z in an elevator, in case you forgot) right in the cold open. It was pretty good! Jay (Jay Pharoah) and Solange (Sasheer Zamata) let us know everything’s cool between them, and actually if you watch the video with audio it tells a different story: Solange was hitting and kicking a spider off her brother-in-law at his request, because he has arachnophobia. Then Beyoncé (Maya Rudolph) shows up.

Late Night with Seth Meyers finally premiered its "Second Chance Theatre" segment last night, featuring Will Forte as his long lost SNL character Jenjamin Franklin with Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen, and Vanessa Bayer there to round out the sketch. Between the unsettling voice, long skirt, and beard, Jenjamin is certainly as weird as Forte has described her, if not way more.

How to stop a wedding

by Jason Kottke
Nate Haduch

this is amazing.

Don't be surprised if things do not go as you hoped; this is a very left-field, highly emotionally charged act. Instead, be gracious, nod politely, and apologize.

There is all sorts of advice online about how to do things, but this piece on wikiHow on how to stop your beloved from marrying someone else is easily the best/worst I have ever seen.

If you were not able to contact her before hand, and you are sure that you want to proceed, find out the location of the wedding. Unless you have been invited, you will have to find out where the wedding ceremony is to be held, and the exact time. Ask family members or mutual friends if it doesn't appear too suspicious, or perhaps check the wedding notices in the local newspaper.

I have never seen something so batshit crazy described in such a calm methodical way. And the photos! The caption for this one is "Enjoy life with your stolen bride or groom":

Kintsukuroi

by Jason Kottke

Kintsukuroi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery using resin mixed with precious metals like gold. The result is often something more beautiful than the original:

Kintsukuroi

There are dozens of examples of kintsukuroi on Pinterest. And as with many Japanese concepts for which there are no corresponding English words, kintsukuroi has many philosophical and metaphorical implications. (via ★interesting)

Update: Here's a short video that shows the technique and other related techniques:

(via the kid should see this)

Update: When I originally posted this, I forgot to transfer the photo of a bowl repaired through kintsukuroi to my server, resulting in the browser displaying a broken image icon. Rather than just fix it by uploading the photo, I used digital kintsukuroi to fill in the crack in the icon. Not sure the technique works as well as it does with pottery, but it seemed fitting. Here's the photo I meant to post:

The Raptors Gave Out Drake Lint Rollers Last Night

by Stereogum
Nate Haduch

I only have good things to say about this

Last week cameras caught Toronto Raptors global ambassador Drake vigorously lint-rolling his pants while courtside during a Raptors playoff game. As Twitter rushed to mock him for this quizzical turn of events, Drake quickly got in on the joke himself by posting a screencap of the incident with the caption “Lint rollers on deck.” You’d think that would be the end of it, but Drake is apparently not one to let a good marketing opportunity pass by. Last night the Raptors gave out 1,200 special edition Drake lint rollers emblazoned with his OVO owl logo. Here’s a closeup via the Raptors’ Twitter:
