Nokia reportedly using 'Lumia 2520' name for Windows RT tablet

by Tom Warren

Nokia appears to be sticking with the Lumia brand for its upcoming Windows RT tablet. Twitter account Evleaks, who has accurately predicted various Nokia devices in the past, claims the Finnish smartphone maker will select Lumia 2520 as the final name for its "Sirius" tablet. Nokia's Windows RT tablet was recently pictured alongside other new Windows 8.1 devices, and evleaks expects the company to announce it on October 22nd.

The Lumia 2520 is a 10.1-inch tablet with a quad-core Qualcomm processor and 1080p display. It will be Nokia's first Windows RT-based tablet, and is expected to debut for $499. Nokia is also planning to release a battery-equipped keyboard accessory for its Lumia 2520, allowing owners to boost the main device...

Having trouble with iMessage or FaceTime on iOS 7? Here’s how to fix it!

by MobileNations

Having trouble with iMessage or FaceTime on iOS 7? Here's how to fix it!

iMessage and FaceTime are wonderful, empowering, enabling technologies that… can frustrate the crap out of you at times. One of those times is when you update or restore your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to a new operating system – like millions of people just did with iOS 7 – and it stops working. If you’re having trouble with iMessage or FaceTime, if they won’t activate or simply won’t work, here are some things you can try:

  1. Turn FaceTime or iMessage off and then back on in Settings.
    1. Launch Settings by tapping the icon on the Home screen
    2. Scroll down to Messages or FaceTime
    3. Toggle the switch from on (green) to off (white)
    4. Wait a minute
    5. Toggle the switch back to on (green)
    6. Wait for it to re-activate
  2. Hard reboot your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad
    1. Make sure you’re on Wi-Fi
    2. Hold down both the Home button on the front, and the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device
    3. Wait for the Apple logo to appear
    4. If it still doesn’t work, repeat step 1 (turning FaceTime or iMessage off and on)

One of those, or a combination of both, should get you going again. If it works for you, or if you find any other ways to trouble shoot, let us know in the comments!

BBM for iOS: Hands on and first impressions!

by MobileNations

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for iOS has begun rolling out across the globe, and while it will only hit the U.S. at midnight, as usual New Zealand got it first. Our own Richard Devine, whose had more than his fair share of BlackBerry devices, switched stores, loaded it up, and went hands on, and he’s got his first impressions in the video above.

On the plus side, BBM literally wrote the book on mobile communications and they still do it better than anyone.

On the maybe pro/maybe con side, they’ve stuck with a very BlackBerry look and feel, which should make it immediately familiar to anyone who’s known and loved in the past, but could be a bit of a barrier to people more familiar with iOS interface paradigms. Granted most mobile chat interfaces still suck, and iOS 7 has re-written a lot of Apple’s own guidelines, so it’s not as big an issue as it might otherwise be.

It’s also iPhone interface only right now, which means it’ll only run letterboxed on iPad, but that’s not a huge problem because it seems like BlackBerry ID is still limited to only one device. That probably won’t affect most people, but will remain a pain point for geeks who want to switch devices and just have their stuff everywhere.

We’ll be back with more coverage later, but for now, if BBM for iOS has already hit your local App Store, here’s where to get it, and some helpful links to get you started:

Cows cleared of charges in salmonella epidemic; new suspects named

by Allie Wilkinson
Emo cow cries because of false accusations.

Scotland’s cows are no longer the primary suspects in the decades-old epidemic of multi-drug resistant Salmonella. While livestock have been assumed to be a main source of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a new study in the journal Science suggests that imported foods and foreign travel are likely to blame instead.

Salmonella is one of the most common bacterial pathogens to infect humans and other animals and carries a substantial public health burden. Globally, 90 million people are infected by the bacteria each year. The annual cost of these infections is about $2.7 billion in the United States and €3 billion in the European Union.

Antibiotic resistance only drives up that cost. As microorganisms evolve resistance mechanisms, existing treatments are rendered virtually ineffective, resulting in prolonged illness and increased risk of death. Hospital stays become longer, multiple treatments are often required, and patients with antimicrobial-resistant infections end up paying more for treatments.

E-readers prove easy on the eye for some dyslexics

by Ars Staff

Using an e-reader may help some dyslexic students understand what they read, researchers at Harvard University argue.

In a paper published in the journal PLOS One, the authors found that a group of dyslexic teenagers showed greater reading comprehension when using an iPod Touch e-reader than when asked to read from paper. The e-reader was formatted to display around nine lines of text on the screen at a time, with only two or three words in each line, leaving fewer visual distractions. The authors therefore concluded that this improvement is due to the reduced demands on visual attention when reading from the iPod.

The dominant theoretical explanation for dyslexia involves phonological processing, or understanding the sound structure of speech. But there is growing evidence that dyslexia is caused by multiple factors, which can include difficulties in visual attention. It seems that some, though not all, dyslexics have difficulties in processing detailed visual information.

LinkedIn sued by users who say it hacked their e-mail accounts

by Megan Geuss

Four plaintiffs filed a class-action suit in US district court in San Jose on Friday claiming that LinkedIn used its member's identities without consent and broke into their third party e-mail accounts to send promotional e-mails to the members' contact lists. The 46-page complaint details many instances in which users complained to LinkedIn about this practice, especially in instances where LinkedIn sent e-mails to “the addresses of spouses, clients, opposing counsel, etc.”

LinkedIn, the plaintiffs claim, "provides no functional way to stop multiple subsequent advertising e-mails from being sent.” The plaintiffs say that the extent of the data-gathering was not adequately conveyed in the Terms of Service.

“If a LinkedIn user leaves an external e-mail account open,” the complaint continues, “LinkedIn pretends to be that user and downloads the e-mail addresses contained anywhere in that account to Linkedln’s servers. LinkedIn is able to download these addresses without requesting the password for the external e-mail accounts or obtaining users’ consent.”

Analysts On BlackBerry: 'DISASTER'

by The Telegraph

blackberry Thorsten Heins BlackBerry shares slumped on Friday after the troubled smartphone maker said it will slash 4,500 jobs and lose almost $1bn in the second quarter. Here is what a few analysts had to say of the announcement.

Ryan Cram, analyst at Charter Equity Research

"It's obviously a disaster. They're pre-announcing half the revenue the street expected this quarter."

Part of that shortfall may stem from a change in how the company recognizes revenue, by recognizing only end-customer sales rather than sales into the channel, he said.

"Switching to a sell-out number reflects what customers are actually buying."

BlackBerry sales of 5.9m were still short of his expectation for 7m under the company's old reporting method.

"The number probably keeps shrinking in the future and that's probably why they're making this change."

The restructuring "makes sense from a survival standpoint. That's really what they're trying to do these days. It just shows the dire situation they're in. It's going to be tough for them to overcome."

Keeping entry level phones suggests they're still trying in emerging markets. But he said the outlook was not good for them in emerging markets either.

"Android is cleaning up in the emerging markets space. Samsung is just eating everybody's lunch. Everybody who's run into trouble has tried to revive their brand. It's been nearly impossible," he said, referring to Ericsson, Siemens and Nokia.

James Faucette, analyst at Pacific Crest Securities

"They're trying to arrest their slide by cutting headcount. I think that's going to make it really difficult. There's also some hope that by taking these steps right now, it helps cleans things up for any type of potential deal or acquisition that they've been very forthright about seeking.

"It's still a really hard business to acquire. It's probably going to find limited value for most potential buyers. They're in a really, really difficult position.

"I don't think [what they're doing now] will work, but I don't think anybody could do much better with it and that's why it's a hard business to acquire.

"I honestly believe that they're trying their best to preserve things for as many people as they can, but it's a very, very hard market."

Amitabh Passi, analyst at UBS

"The revenue and device shipment numbers are pretty surprising given how weak it is. I think many of us were expecting a pretty difficult quarter, but this much worse than we anticipated.

"They have to do something. To me the fact that they are exploring a sale is the only real alternative at this point. I think in the meantime, the fact that they are cutting operating expenditures deep is the best they can do to try to stabilise this ship."

Colin Gillis, analyst at BGC Partners

"The company has sailed off a cliff. What do you expect when you announce you're up for sale? Who wants to commit to a platform that could possibly be shut down?"

BlackBerry's 3.7m unit shipments were roughly half what he said he expected. But their plan to restructure the company and narrow its focus is "reasonable".

"It has to be done," he said.

Syrian Dictator Bashar al-Assad's Instagram Account Makes Him Look Like Mother Teresa

by Jillian D'Onfro

RTXJSQOWhat do you know about Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad?

He's a dictator.

His government has condoned the kidnapping, raping, torturing, and killing of the Syrian people.

He has allegedly ordered chemical attacks on his citizens.

He and his wife love children, and soup kitchens, and comforting the wounded!

Wait, you didn't know that last one? Well, let me direct you to Bashar al-Assad's Instagram feed where you can look at images of him and his wife, Asma, showing the world just how sweet they can be.

Currently, more than 40,000 people follow the account, though by no means is the majority duped into taking all of Assad's photos at face value. Many call out the Instagram feed as propaganda or post mean comments on some of the more saccharine photos ("Somebody will be rolling your head down the street soon, just like that," user mhughes69 writes below a picture of Assad's wife rolling a basketball to a child).

Two Qantas Planes Forced To Take Evasive Action In Mid-Air Near Miss

by Agence France Presse

Qantas

Australian authorities were Saturday investigating how two Qantas passenger planes got so close that it triggered a collision warning alert, forcing them to take evasive action.

The incident happened over southern Australia on Friday and involved two Airbus A330s travelling in opposite directions between Sydney and Perth.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), which is investigating, said early reports were that the eastbound plane was cruising at 39,000 feet when the westbound plane was given permission to climb from 38,000 feet to 40,000 feet, triggering one of the plane's traffic collision avoidance systems.

"One of the aircraft, the lower one, asked for clearance to climb; the air traffic controller gave that clearance," Richard Woodward, vice-president of the Australian and International Pilots Association, told the ABC.

"And as they started the climb, they got a collision warning alert from the aircraft and they took evasive action."

Woodward, a Qantas pilot, said the incident was worrying because the collision warning system was "sort of the last line of defence".

"At that altitude and that speed it's very difficult for the crews to see and take avoiding action. The aircraft's doing a kilometre every two seconds or so when they're closing on each other like that," he said.

Qantas said that a "loss of separation", the technical term when planes breach the distance they are required to maintain between each other, happened near Adelaide.

"Indications are that the loss of separation occurred when one of the Qantas aircraft received clearance to climb from air traffic control," the airline said in a statement on Friday.

"Our pilots followed standard operating procedures in re-establishing the required separation distance following the alert from the onboard notification system. There was no impact to passengers."

One passenger told the ABC after arriving in Perth: "I saw a plane going underneath us to the left, somewhere in South Australia I'd suggest.

"I don't think anybody knew, I saw it and didn't care. They know what they're doing".

Here's The Evidence That Apple's Gold iPhone Shortage Is Actually Deliberate (AAPL)

by Jim Edwards

gold iphone 5s

Do you own a gold iPhone 5S?

No, of course not.

That's because there aren't any.

Let's qualify that: Gold iPhones exist. They are just very rare.

And you don't have one.

At Business Insider, we've got a new iPhone 5S and an iPhone 5C. But the 5S is black, not gold. And the 5C is blue, because it doesn't come in gold. Everyone wants to see the gold iPhone 5S but ... they don't seem to exist in real life.

There are good reasons to believe this is a deliberate marketing ploy by the geniuses at Apple.

The business press is abuzz with the gold iPhone "shortage." There has been talk of a "supply" problem.

This, of course, is nonsense. The gold iPhone is NOT made of real gold, it's made of aluminum and gold paint. The price of aluminum has actually declined during the year in which Apple began planning for its gold iPhone supply — so the idea that there might be a shortage of gold-dyed aluminum is just silly.

Aluminum aluminium

Apple's marketing people are not dummies. They can estimate demand prior to a new product launch.

Pointedly, there is not a shortage of plastic iPhone 5C's. No one is complaining that they can't get the blue one.

plastic pricesThe price of industrial plastic resin contracts has actually risen over the same time period (see chart at right). Somehow Apple still managed to meet the demand.

And yet if you want a gold one, good luck. Consider:

At this point, only the most hopeless Apple fanboy would argue that Apple's brand managers seriously believed that the sum total of demand for new gold iPhones among Wall Street, Australia and O2 subscribers would be zero phones.

So the alternative explanation is that Apple has screwed this up.

How likely is it that Apple simply made a mistake? This is Apple, the company that is routinely heralded as the premier marketer of the entire world. The same Apple that is the subject of 668 Harvard Business School case studies.

Sure. It's an embarrassing supply chain miscalculation. Whatever. (We emailed Apple for comment but did not hear back.)

In the meantime, the conspicuous absence of gold iPhones is creating more positive publicity than Apple could ever buy in advertising. Gold iPhones are already selling for $1,800 on eBay. The Atlantic has noted that gold iPhone ownership has already become — after only 24 hours on sale — about social "showmanship." (And Business Insider predicted last week that the gold iPhone would divide the world into the haves and have-nots.)

This is about "velvet rope" marketing. If you've ever been to a nightclub you'll know what this means: Nightclubs tend to be very similar. Even at the highest level, you're basically paying to enter a large, dark, crowded, noisy space with flashing lights and expensive drinks. It's often not that much fun. But if there's a long line outside — because it's difficult to get in — and a bouncer controlling access behind a velvet rope, then club suddenly seems very enticing indeed.

That's what is going on with the gold iPhone. You can't have one. And that's why you want one. Here's the quote-of-the-day that proves the case, from ABC:

Anna Prymak, who was eighth in line at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in Manhattan, also said she was there for the gold iPhone, which she had heard was going to run out first. "I want the gold one and everyone wants the gold one," she said.

A Brilliant And Disturbing Short Film About The People Who Wait In Line Forever Just To Buy An iPhone

by Joe Weisenthal

Wondering what the deal is with people who spend days in line waiting for a new iPhone?

Independent filmmaker Casey Neistat made a great short film about this weird subculture.

There's a range of people who do it. Some are there professionally (they're paid by people who want the iPhone first, but don't have the time). Some are gadget obsessed.

And some seem completely reckless, like this person below who was sleeping on the sidewalk, using a plastic bag (what!?) to shield themselves from the elements.

The best part comes at the end of the video, when the people talk about how OBVIOUSLY they're going for the gold iPhone.

11 Breathtaking Images From The Final Space Shuttle Launches

by Harrison Jacobs

America's last space shuttle missions occurred in 2011, with the successful launches of Discovery, Endeavor, and Atlantis. Photojournalist Dan Winters captured these landmark events with incredible access to the NASA program in its final days.

For the photographs, Winters set up automatically controlled cameras at particular points around the launch pad (some as close as 700 feet from the launch) so he could capture the stunning takeoffs in incredible detail.

Winters has been fascinated with space shuttle launches since he first witnessed Astronaut John Glenn's 1998 return to space in person and found it to be "visually unbelievable."

"It's one of those things that's hard to describe or imagine until you see it," Winters told Business Insider. "There's a lot of anxiety because it's such a controlled chaos and you know there's a potential for failure ... There are over two million parts on the shuttle and every single part has to have 100 percent performance."

Winters has collected his work from the project in a book called "Last Launch: Discovery, Endeavor, Atlantis," from University of Texas Press. It is available for purchase here. Here's where you can see the space shuttles in person.

This is the space shuttle Endeavor, as it begins to launch for the final time in 2011:

Space Shuttle Endeavor on its last launch

When the launch sequence starts, the space shuttle sits on the launch pad for approximately six seconds, while the main engines build up their thrust.

Space Shuttle Discovery Main Engine Start

In the seconds before liftoff, 300,000 gallons of water are dumped onto the launch pad to dampen the sound vibrations from the engines and rocket boosters. The water quickly evaporates in mist, as seen in this photo.

Space Shuttle Endeavor On Its Final Launch

Once in flight, the space shuttle (in this photo, Atlantis) begins to roll 180 degrees to relieve stress on the shuttle's wings and make it easier for the crew to pilot to their destination in orbit.

Space Shuttle Atlantis beginning its "roll" program

A mere twenty one seconds after liftoff, the space shuttle is no longer visible to people on the ground, says Winters.

This is Discovery's payload bay where it stores all of its cargo for missions. For Discovery's final flight in 2011, they brought modules for the International Space Station and a humanoid robot called Robonaut.

This is space shuttle Atlantis on its way to assembly before its final flight.

Space Shuttle Atlantis Being Moved

Prior to takeoff, NASA assembles the space shuttle, engines, and rocket boosters into the "space shuttle stack." Winters took this photograph from the 26th floor of the building.

This is Discovery's cockpit, or "flight deck." During flight, the pilot sat on the right while the commander sat on the left.

This is one of the shuttle's "main engines." After the booster rockets are jettisoned mid-flight, the main engines accelerate the space shuttle from 3,000 miles per hour to 17,000.

This is Endeavor's second-to-last launch. Winters used special settings on his camera to dramatize the launch, which he says was so bright and cloudy that it was hard for spectators to see.

The US Navy Just Uploaded The Sickest Slo-Mo Video Of A Ballistic Missile Defense Test

by Geoffrey Ingersoll

The U.S. Navy recently conducted a test of its Aegis missile defense system off the coast of Hawaii.

The USS Erie launched the missile, which intercepted the "most sophisticated target to date," reports Scientific American.

This test, called FTM-21 (Flight Test - Standard Missile), sent two Aegis guided missiles to intercept one short-range ballistic missile with a near simultaneous impact.

"This latest test is the first time we have seen USS Lake Erie, sailors, and Aegis BMD Weapon System schedule, analyze, launch and control multiple missiles in flight through intercept at the same time," Nick Bucci, Director of BMD Development Programs at Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Training business, told reporters.

The Aegis missile has a range that enables it to take out a low-orbit satellite, and mobile aboard U.S. destroyers, the guidance system has demonstrated the ability to take out a short-range ballistic missile and a cruise missile at the same time.

It is, in short, the Dikembe Mutombo of missile defense systems.

Tunisian Girls Are Coming Home Pregnant After Performing 'Sexual Jihad' In Syria

by Paul Szoldra

syria

A number of girls from Tunisia have become pregnant after traveling to Syria to participate in "sexual jihad," according to Lotfi Bin Jeddo, Tunisia's Interior Minister.

The girls “are (sexually) swapped between 20, 30, and 100 rebels and they come back bearing the fruit of sexual contacts in the name of sexual jihad and we are silent doing nothing and standing idle,” Al Arabiya reported he said during an address to the National Constituent Assembly.

The Telegraph has more:

"After the sexual liaisons they have there in the name of 'jihad al-nikah' - (sexual holy war, in Arabic) - they come home pregnant," Ben Jeddou told the MPs.

He did not elaborate on how many Tunisian women had returned to the country pregnant with the children of jihadist fighters.

Jihad al-nikah, permitting extramarital sexual relations with multiple partners, is considered by some hardline Sunni Muslim Salafists as a legitimate form of holy war.

Jeddo also said his ministry had taken a number of steps to stem the flow of Tunisians travelling to Syria.

Tunisia's former Mufti (the country's highest religious official) warned earlier this year that 13 Tunisian girls "were fooled" into travelling to Syria to offer sexual services for the rebels. He described the practice as a form of “prostitution.”

“For Jihad in Syria, they are now pushing girls to go there. 13 young girls have been sent for sexual jihad. What is this? This is called prostitution. It is moral educational corruption,” Battikh said.

Smart Phones – are they replacing laptops?

by Peng Wu

According to the recent surveys, the smart phones are on their way to replace the laptops. Besides, the cheap international shipping data of various courier companies also reveal the same. These days, the smart phones are getting huge popularities because of the faster processors, cheaper parts and the capability hold more information and data. All of these features together are helping the smart phones to spread among the generation Y. The tablets are already working as the medium between these two devices. What now the young people mainly look for is any portable device that can perform the basic functions on a faster note. In fact, the end users care just a little about the platforms which actually run the applications. They only care about the functionality of the devices.

At present, the Android, blackberry and the iPhones vie for the smart phone supremacy. The first and foremost advantage of the smart phones over the laptop is the weight and the size. The modern Smartphone screens are big enough for the users to check what is going on the screen as well as these are light enough to carry around. Due to these advanced features, the laptops and the desktops are gathering dust for the past few years except for the gamer people who mostly prefer the laptops in order to get the tremendous power for graphics or for those people who mainly use their computers like televisions and watch movies or TV programs on the large screen.

But in general, the smart phones are the logical competition for the tablet computers. These devices are now reproducing like as the locusts in the summer. The screens of these devices are now big enough to access various types of applications, to watch videos and movies or to have a quick flick on the dials of the hotels, restaurants, boutiques etc.
Besides, the great thing about these Smartphones is the terrific apps shared by the Smartphone users of all brands. Most of these apps are available at free of costs or at a minimum price. With the help of these apps, the users can now perform a number of tasks right on their mobile devices like editing the pictures, getting day to day news, downloading music, transcribe notes or lectures digitally from the classrooms or from the meetings, construct polished presentations, create spreadsheets with just numbers. As a whole, whatever you want to do in your personal life and in your professional life, you can do all of them on your mobile devices with the help of these Smartphone apps. A recent data obtained from courierpoint.com describes that, presently Smartphones is sent as the parcel to Canada from UK from one person to another as gifts instead of the laptops.

Studies also show that a good percentage of the laptop owners now report using these devices not at all or less often. The only reason behind this tremendous market penetration is the emergence of the Smartphones that show the ubiquitous drive to the mobility.

Summary: Since the emergence, the Smartphones are slowly capturing the market of the laptops because of the flexibility as well as due to the fast performance. But are they replacing the laptops? Let’s find out.

This article has been authored by Hamna Abobaker, an expert author from Texas. She has a thorough experience in writing articles on the electronic parcel to Canada from UK and cheap international shipping.

If You Have An iPhone, The Police Want You To Download iOS 7 Right Now (AAPL)

by Megan Rose Dickey

ios 7 apple iphone 5s

Download iOS 7 sooner than later, authorities say.

That's because Apple's latest operating system sports an awesome new feature called Activation Lock.

We first saw the news on AllThingsD.

Activation Lock requires anyone who has your iPhone to enter your Apple ID and password before they can tamper with the "Find my iPhone" feature.

That means it's going to be a lot harder for someone to successfully get away with stealing your iPhone.

Besides the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, iOS 7 is compatible with the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4, the iPad 4th and 3rd generation, the iPad 2, the iPad Mini, and the fifth-generation iPod Touch.

Researchers can slip an undetectable trojan into Intel’s Ivy Bridge CPUs

by Dan Goodin

Scientists have developed a technique to sabotage the cryptographic capabilities included in Intel's Ivy Bridge line of microprocessors. The technique works without being detected by built-in tests or physical inspection of the chip.

The proof of concept comes eight years after the US Department of Defense voiced concern that integrated circuits used in crucial military systems might be altered in ways that covertly undermined their security or reliability. The report was the starting point for research into techniques for detecting so-called hardware trojans. But until now, there has been little study into just how feasible it would be to alter the design or manufacturing process of widely used chips to equip them with secret backdoors.

In a recently published research paper, scientists devised two such backdoors they said adversaries could feasibly build into processors to surreptitiously bypass cryptographic protections provided by the computer running the chips. The paper is attracting interest following recent revelations the National Security Agency is exploiting weaknesses deliberately built-in to widely used cryptographic technologies so analysts can decode vast swaths of Internet traffic that otherwise would be unreadable.
