Boy Sends Question About Ninjas To Head Of US Joint Special Ops, Gets A Response

by Geoffrey Ingersoll

william mcravenIs a Navy SEAL quieter than a ninja?

Six-year-old Walker Greentree is a kid in a military family who was determined to find out, so he wrote to Admiral William McRaven.

McRaven is head of U.S. Special Operations Command, credited with organizing and executing the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, and is a Navy SEAL himself — he's without a doubt one of the deadliest men on the planet.

Surely, he would have an answer.

Here's how it all started, according to military nonprofit Blue Star Families:

One afternoon while playing with a friend in the yard, the young Greentree was scolded by his mother.  "Be quiet like a SEAL," said Vivian Greentree.  His friend immediately replied — as one would expect from a 7-year old. "Ninjas are quieter than SEALS." And thus, a monumental argument began.  WHO is quieter? Ninjas or SEALS?  SEALS or Ninjas?

Greentree wrote a letter to McRaven, and McRaven wrote back with an answer: "I think ninjas are probably quieter than SEALs, but we are better swimmers, and also better with guns and blowing things up."

See both letters below in a graphic from Blue Star:

This 1,300-Year Old Chinese Fishing Method Has Been Destroyed By Modern Fishing

by Mamta Badkar

cormorant fishing

Cormorant fishing on China's Li River is all but dying out.

Fisherman set out with domesticated cormorants, a seabird, on bamboo rafts before sunrise and often in the early evening. These birds prey on fish. But the fishermen tie threads around the necks of the cormorants to prevent them from swallowing the fish they catch.

Once the threads are set, the fishermen begin chanting on their boats to prompt the birds to dive down and retrieve the fish. They control their birds with long poles.

Iranian Politicians Propose Bill To Enrich Uranium Higher Despite Nuclear Deal

by Parisa Hafezi, Reuters

iran

ANKARA (Reuters) - Iran's hardline lawmakers are seeking to increase uranium enrichment under the country's nuclear program to a level that can produce bomb-grade material, a state-run website said on Wednesday.

The bill could bring Tehran into direct conflict with the major powers that reached an interim agreement with Iran in Geneva last month, requiring Tehran to suspend its enrichment of higher grade uranium.

However, Iran's most powerful authority Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has so far backed the accord.

The hardliners, irked by the foreign policy shift since moderate President Hasan Rouhani was elected in June, oppose the Geneva deal.

The bill introduced on Wednesday, "if approved, will oblige the government to ... enrich uranium to 60 percent level in order to provide fuel for submarine engines if the sanctions are tightened and Iran's nuclear rights are ignored (by major powers)," said hardline lawmaker Mehdi Mousavinejad, according to the English language Press TV website.

It was not immediately clear whether or when the parliament might discuss the bill but the official IRNA news agency said it was introduced by some 100 lawmakers and had been tagged with a "double urgency" status, meaning it could be discussed in parliament within a week.

"The bill is aimed at giving an upper hand to our government and the negotiating team ... It will allow the government to continue our nuclear program if the Geneva deal fails," IRNA quoted Hossein Taghavi Hosseini, spokesman for parliament's National Security and Foreign Affairs committee, as saying.

DISSUADING FURTHER SANCTIONS

The November 24 accord is meant to give the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain, Germany and Iran a period of six months to negotiate a final settlement of the decade-old standoff, easing worries over a new war in the Middle East.

"Iran's parliament lacks power and particularly after Rouhani's election win, the hardline lawmakers do not have the upper hand," a senior western diplomat in Tehran said.

"Iran's Supreme Leader backs the deal and ultimately, lawmakers have to follow his path."

The Iranian government would have no choice but to obey such a bill if passed by parliament. But diplomats and analysts believe Iran could be using parliament as a bargaining tool in the talks.

"This draft bill has been prepared in reaction to America's hostile measures," Mousavinejad told the official IRNA news agency on Tuesday.

Despite opposition by President Barack Obama's administration, 26 U.S. senators introduced legislation on Thursday to impose new sanctions on Iran if the country breaks the Geneva interim deal.

The proposed legislation would require reductions in Iran's petroleum production and apply new penalties to Iran's engineering, mining and construction industries if Iran violated the interim agreement or if negotiators failed to reach a final comprehensive deal.

Washington earlier this month also blacklisted 19 more Iranian companies and individuals under sanctions aimed at Iran's nuclear program.

Iran rejects Western fears that its nuclear work has any military intentions and says it needs nuclear power for electricity generation and medical research.

Nuclear experts and sanctions specialists from the seven countries will meet again after Christmas to figure out how the deal goes into effect, obliging Iran to fulfill its obligations and Western governments to ease some economic sanctions in return.

Taiwanese FTC fines Apple for interfering in iPhone handset and contract pricing

by Engadget

Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission has ruled that Apple’s been naughty rather than nice this holiday week, fining it for 20 million Taiwan dollars (around $670,000) after it specified pricing to iPhone carriers. Once Apple sells distribution rights to an iPhone stockist, it has no right to dictate how much carriers and companies sell the devices for. According to the FTC’s statement: “Through the email correspondence between Apple and these three telecom companies we discovered the companies submit their pricing plans to Apple to be approved or confirmed before the products hit the market.” The iPhone maker will be able to appeal the ruling, although according to the WSJ, it could face a fine of up to $50 million Taiwan dollars if it doesn’t comply.

Turkish Lira Hits Record Low After Controversial Cabinet Reshuffle

by Agence France Presse

turkey

The Turkish lira hit a fresh record low on Thursday following a cabinet reshuffle by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan amid a huge graft scandal.

The lira fell to 2.1035 against the dollar on Thursday, after starting the day at 2.0914.

On Wednesday three top ministers whose sons have been caught up in police anti-corruption raids announced their resignations, with one calling on Erdogan to also step down in the first such challenge to the prime minister from within his own ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

In response to the escalating crisis, Erdogan announced a long-expected cabinet reshuffle and named 10 new ministers -- almost half of the cabinet.

The renewed political crisis ended a brief reprieve for the lira.

It had strengthened to 2.0650 following an announcement by the central bank on Tuesday that it would ramp up its support for the unit by selling at least $6 billion in foreign currency by the end of January.

The lira has also been under heavy pressure this year in expectation of the US Federal Reserve's decision to reduce its stimulus measures.

As a leading emerging economy, Turkey has been one of the main beneficiaries of the Fed's stimulus as US investors sought higher returns abroad.

The Istanbul stock market also dropped by 1.8 percent to 64,904 points on Thursday.

The 20 best (and three most disappointing) video games of 2013

by Kyle Orland
Aurich Lawson

Before we get on with the list, I want to make sure you don’t miss this year’s Ars Technica Charity Drive sweepstake. You can win one of 160 prizes, including limited edition gaming collectibles, all while helping out a good cause. Entries are due by January 3, so check it out if you haven’t already, and thanks in advance for your donation.

The end of a console cycle is always one of the most exciting times for gaming. While the encroaching Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ate up a lot of media attention throughout the year, veteran developers with years of experience on older hardware proved that there was still some life in the systems that would technically be “last generation” by year’s end. Those developers created some of the most epic cinematic gaming ever this year, building on the ambition and false starts of those that came before them to create some of the medium’s most memorable experiences.

On the other end of the spectrum, indie game developers were busy effectively examining the bounds of what a video game could be this year. 2013 was a year in which many of these professionals showed an incredible comfort and willingness to use the medium in entirely new ways, reinventing genres and also exploring the potential for direct, emotional interactive storytelling. Amidst it all, there were plenty of games that were less revolutionary while being incredibly refined and satisfying examples of their genres. And of course there were a few stinkers that utterly failed to live up to lofty expectations.

5 Reasons Why Choosing Spotify Is A Terrible Idea

by Peng Wu

Spotify is one of the most popular online music streaming services at present. It offers digital rights management -restricted music from major record labels. You can legally listen to many of the most popular music through the service. It is also multi-platform so you don’t only get to access it through a web browser. You can also use it on your mobile device or through your smart TV. It is a great music service but not without drawbacks.   (Image courtesy of digitalart / FreeDigitalPhotos.net)

Run as a privately held company, Spotify provides users a six-month free trial period. This trial period allows users to access standard features like browsing for music through artist name, song name,  album, genre, record label, or playlist. It’s not really bad but you may want to consider the following disadvantages before deciding to make Spotify your online radio of choice.

1. The ads are annoying

Spotify employs visual and radio-style advertising. Bear in mind that these ads are already present during the six-month trial period that is purported to be a free offering. These ads can ruin the mood as you listen to your favorite music. Of course, you can get rid of these ads by paying but how are you supposed to be enticed to pay when you are already bothered by the ads during the trial period?

2. It isn’t an unlimited free service

There are many free options for online music so why would you still want to spend money just to listen to songs you can’t own. You can tune in to the web streaming of various radio stations, for example, or go to services like Jango Radio for free online music. Among commercial online music streaming services, Spotify does not even have the most attractive subscription packages.

Compared to Pandora, for instance, Spotify’s mobile ad-free service is thrice more expensive at $9.99 per month. There is an option to use Spotify for free (with ads) but it becomes limited to 10 hours per month or 2.5 hours per week after the six-month free trial period.

3. They are accused of not properly compensating artists

If you can spend money for Spotify, it’s probably better spending your money buying your favorite songs to support your favorite artists. Spotify has been accused of not properly compensating the artists whose music are being played on Spotify. A report by Helienne Lindvall on The Guardian mentions a number of criticisms on the artist payment scheme of Spotify. If you really have the money to spare, better spend it buying the records of the artists you like.

According to some sources, an artist has to be streamed more than 4 million times every month just to be paid around $1,160 in a month, a minimum wage rate. Many are blaming Spotify’s less-than-desirable business model for this.

4. Subscriptions are limited to those who have PayPal accounts or credit or debit cards

So what if you finally decided to spend your money for Spotify but you are still a student and you don’t have a credit card? You could get yourself a PayPal account but you couldn’t lift the limitations off because you don’t have a credit card. This is a major hurdle in using Spotify. Many young music lovers could be interested in what it has to offer but couldn’t be qualified to pay for the subscription.

5. There’s a feature that allows users to search for specific songs but you may get disappointed not finding the song you are looking for

This could be because the artist opted not to be available on the search function or because of label restrictions in certain regions. Some are also complaining that the songs are available in Spotify but they still need to use the “Advanced Search” function to find them.

The bottom line here is that there are better online radio or music streaming services you can find. Spotify may be good but it is certainly not the best or among the better ones. You can try the free trial period and decide for yourself, though.

Europe Is Closed, China Tumbled, Japan Hit A 6-Year High

by Sam Ro

japan nikkei

Japan's Nikkei rallied 1.0% to 16,174, a six-year high.

China's Shanghai Composite, however, tumbled 1.6% to 2,073 as investors continue to be nervous about potential credit market problems.

European markets are closed for Boxing Day.

U.S. markets will be open today. Futures will begin trading at 6:00 a.m. ET.

Later today, we'll get the latest weekly tally of U.S. initial jobless claims. Economists estimate claims fell to 347,000 from 379,000 a week ago. "Initial jobless claims likely fell back after two weeks of elevated readings," said Citi's D'Antonio. "But the four-week moving average continued to rise. The number of beneficiaries probably remained high given the surge in first filings of late."

Exposed: BitTorrent Pirates at the European Parliament, And More Unexpected Places

by Ernesto

european parliamentMost TorrentFreak readers know that when you use BitTorrent without a VPN, the whole world is able to see what you’re downloading and where from.

Dozens of companies collect data on alleged BitTorrent users, either for analytics purposes or for future legal action.

With help from BitTorrent tracking outfit ScanEye we have been keeping an eye on interesting “pirate” venues over the years, and it’s become a holiday tradition to share some of our findings.

This year we put the spotlight on the European Parliament, where several MEPs are proposing to decriminalize file-sharing for personal use. When we look at the prevalence of piracy in Brussels, it’s safe to say that this plan is partly in the interests of the lawmakers themselves.

Below is a sample taken from dozens of recent “hits” of European Parliament IP-addresses on various BitTorrent trackers. The pirated downloads include newer movies such as Elysium, classic films such as The Ten Commandments and TV-shows including Breaking Bad.

European Parliament pirates

ep-pirates-2013

Of course, the European Parliament is not the only political arena where people pirate files. The same is true at the U.S. House of Representatives, although we saw much fewer hits than the year before.

The decrease in activity may be due to the fact that the House has implemented a rather strict anti-P2P policy. This resulted in a Spotify-block, much to the annoyance of the RIAA who saw it as overbroad censorship.

U.S. House of Representatives pirates

reps-2013

Outside of the political sphere there is also plenty of piracy, and the offices of movie studios and record labels are no exception. Again, there appears to be a downward trend in most of these places, perhaps in part due to our previous coverage.

However, there are still plenty of interesting “hits” left such as the following titles which are linked to IP-addresses operated by Paramount Pictures.

Paramount Pictures pirates

paramount-2013

When it comes to online piracy no place appears to be without sin. Earlier this year we highlighted that there are also plenty of BitTorrent pirates at the Vatican, and the new pope didn’t do much to change this.

Below are the most recent hits from Holy See, in the Vatican City State, which are a mix of video entertainment and software.

vatican-2013

The above is just the tip of the iceberg, as we could list many more unexpected locations where people pirate movies, software and TV-shows. As with most BitTorrent tracking software there is a chance that some results may be spoofed, but this is rare.

If we have to learn something from this exercise, then it’s that there are BitTorrent pirates in all decent sized companies and institutions. But that shouldn’t really be much of a surprise to most people by now.

DEBT: The US Vs. China

by Sam Ro

chinese us debt

Heightened volatility in China's short-term interest rates has some people worried if the world's second largest economy is doomed for a credit crisis.

For a discussion on this, check out our Q&A with Patrick Chovanec.

Generally speaking, economists think that China's financial risks are contained, yet they also warn it's something to keep an eye on.

Here's Wells Fargo Securities' quick summary of all the debt in China:

Does China have a debt problem? The answer would appear to be “no” when analyzing the Chinese household and central government (i.e., Beijing) sectors where the debt-to-GDP ratios at present are only 30 percent and 15 percent, respectively. Comparable ratios in the United States are 80 percent and 70 percent, respectively. However, the debt-to-GDP ratio of the Chinese business sector is 140 percent, whereas its American counterpart stands at 80 percent. Although there are few visible signs of financial stress in the Chinese business sector at present, further increases in leverage could eventually spell trouble. Stay tuned.

"Our caution regarding the Chinese debt situation would become more elevated in the future if we see rapid credit growth in conjunction with slow economic growth," wrote Wells Fargo's Jay Bryson.

However, economists like Societe Generale's Wei Yao worry that this may have already happened.

When considering the chart above, keep in mind that China's economy is growing around twice as fast as the U.S.'s.

Teens In The UK Are Calling It: Facebook Is Dead And Buried

by Caroline Moss

mark zuckerberg thumbs down facebookThis year marked the start of teenagers adopting other social networks instead of Facebook as their parents signed up for Zuckerberg's site in droves.

In a European Union-funded study on social media, the Department of Anthropology at University College London is running nine simultaneous 15-month ethnographic studies in seven countries to find out how teens were perceiving Facebook.

We read about what UK teens think on The Conversation:

What we’ve learned from working with 16-18 year olds in the UK is that Facebook is not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried. Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it. Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives. Parents have worked out how to use the site and see it as a way for the family to remain connected. In response, the young are moving on to cooler things.

Instead, four new contenders for the crown have emerged: Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp.

This is similar to what teens in the United States think about Facebook.

U.S. Army Base Runs Unlicensed Windows 7 Computers

by Ernesto

microsoft-pirateThe United States is known for its aggressive stance when it comes to copyright infringements.

It therefore came as quite a surprise that the U.S. military had been using unlicensed logistics software for years, a case the Obama administration settled for $50 million last month.

However, a signal soldier serving in Qatar informs TorrentFreak that this incident may not be as unique as it sounds. According to the soldier, who we will name Mark, the soldiers’ education center at his base has 18 computers which all run unlicensed copies of Windows 7.

“All of the computers in this computer lab show that the operating system is not a genuine copy,” Mark says.

The picture below shows several of the computers in the education center of Camp As Sayliyah. The facility is open to all active and reserve military personnel as well as DOD civilians.

center

The computers have been running in this state for quite a while according to the soldier, and he is unaware of any attempts to properly license the software.

invalid

The picture below again shows a Windows 7 copy that hasn’t been activated. The product-ID displayed is a generic OEM one, which is often used on Dell machines.

workgroup

The desktop of the machines also shows a clear reminder that the Windows copy is not genuine. In addition, users also get the occasional popup warning that they “may be a victim of software counterfeiting.”

screen

Mark informs us that this is the first time he has seen a military base openly run unlicensed Windows systems. He brought up the issue with his direct superiors a few weeks ago, but that hasn’t changed anything.

“I am not anti-government in any way, but I have been in the army a long time and I feel the army should be kept honest and accountable for what they do, especially when it is so public and a hot button issue in these times,” Mark told us.

From the information we received it is unclear why the computers are not licensed. Perhaps the legitimate keys were lost, perhaps there are no valid keys available, or maybe the Army has fallen victim to the consumer unfriendliness of DRM.

What we do know is that the Department of Defense has a long-standing relationship with Microsoft. Earlier this year both parties signed a $617 million licensing deal to bring Windows 8 to the Army, Air Force, and Defense Information Systems Agency.

Considering this new deal, Microsoft will probably forgive the U.S. for running a few computers without a license.

Iron Maiden Tracks Down Pirates…. And Gives Them Concerts? (Updated)

by Ernesto

iron-maidenOver the past several years numerous studies have shown that on average file-sharers spend more money on legal purchases, including concert tickets and merchandise.

The most logical explanation for this finding is that “pirates” are more engaged than those who don’t share, and that they complement their legal purchases with unauthorized downloads.

This means that unauthorized file-sharers are in fact the music industry’s best customers. So, instead of hunting down these pirates for lawsuits, it may be more rewarding to play for them.

The English heavy metal band Iron Maiden is reportedly doing just that. The veteran musicians use the services of music analytics company Musicmetric which allows them to see where their albums are most pirated.

“If you know what drives engagement you can maximize the value of your fan base. Artists could say ‘we’re getting pirated here, let’s do something about it’, or ‘we’re popular here, let’s play a show’,” Gregory Mead, CEO and co-founder of Musicmetric told Cite.

Instead of suing these unauthorized file-sharers, the band used the information as input for its tours, and not without success.

“Maiden have been rather successful in turning free file-sharing into fee-paying fans,” Mead said.

The overview below, for example, shows that Iron Maiden is most popular among Brazilian pirates with 463,467 downloads in recent years. The band is also relatively popular in Chile with 1,300 downloads per 100,000 Internet users, which totals 70,932 downloads.

Iron Maiden’s popularity on BitTorrent (large)

mms

Iron Maiden’s recent tour had a heavy focus on South America, where the band has a lot of Twitter followers and unauthorized downloads. The band played in Paraguay for the first time, for example, and concerts were sold out throughout the region.

Musicmetric suggests that the file-sharing data helped Iron Maiden turn these pirates into paying customers, simply by heading over there and playing for them. It’s impossible to download the true experience of a live concert, so the chances are high that several pirates will turn up.

“If you engage with fans, there is a chance to turn a percentage into paying customers. You can see that through various bands using the BitTorrent network in a legal way to share content,” Mead says.

It’s refreshing to see that instead of hunting down pirates for lawsuits, file-sharing data is being used by artists to plan their gigs. After all, it is much more rewarding to play for your fans than to try to bankrupt them in court.

Update: The Cite report suggested that Iron Maiden used the analytics to plan their concerts, however, this claim remains unsubstantiated. TorrentFreak contacted Musicmetric before publication but we were unable to get a comment in time as they were out of the office for a few days.

Havas Worldwide President Gives 10 Tips For Winning Talent From Competitors

by Andrew Benett, Havas Worldwide

Andrew benett havasHavas Worldwide president Andrew Benett studied the best ways to find and attract the right employees in his book, The Talent Mandate, released earlier this year. He shared with us 10 tips for winning talent from competitors:

1. Hire the person, not the position: We hire for the future, not the past. Agility and relentless adaptation are vital, and so we’re typically not looking for someone to slot into a position shaped by the person who just vacated it. We give hires the freedom to meld each position to their own individual strengths and interests. And we help them keep adding on new skills and experiences so they—and their position—can grow along with the business.

2. Mind your culture: Where other elements (including pay and benefits) are relatively equal, culture is increasingly often the distinguishing factor that sets one company above another. And it may well be the single greatest factor keeping talent in place and engaged. By culture, I’m not talking about poof pillows and sushi bars but about the values that hold a company together—knowing what does and does not fit. And I also mean the intangible way an organization feels when you walk through the door. It doesn’t surprise me at all that 97% of the senior business leaders we surveyed said a strong culture can be a company’s most valuable asset.

3. Ban jerks: People, obviously, are the most critical component of any culture. We all know people who have left an employer, not because they didn’t like the company or their job responsibilities but because they couldn’t stand their manager or someone else in a position of power who made them dread Monday mornings. We have a no-tolerance policy for bullies and jerks. Even if someone is a superstar on paper, it’s not worth it to keep that person if his or her presence is a drain on the culture and is preventing the formation of other superstars.

4. Operate from a place of trust: We’re not in the business of hiring brilliant thinkers and technical people just so we can micromanage them and second-guess everything they do. The best cultures are infused with transparency and trust. They give people the information they need (and more) and then get out of their way and let them do their jobs. 94% of senior business leaders we surveyed agreed: “The most successful companies trust their employees, giving them freedom to make decisions and act with a measure of independence.”

5. Measure by results: For the most part, I don’t care where or when an employee gets the job done. What matters is that they deliver on assignments and find creative ways to add value to the company. If someone wants to compress his or her work into a four-day workweek or prefers working at home part-time or gets more done on weekends, then so be it. Provided client and agency needs are being satisfied, we want to offer all the flexibility we can. This helps with motivation and retention, and it also allows us to cast a wider net. There are lots of enormously talented people out there whose lives simply can’t accommodate the standard workweek. We want them. 97% of senior executives surveyed agree: “The most successful companies are flexible and open to meeting employees’ varied needs.”

6. Say thank-you: Know why most people leave their jobs? According to the US Department of Labor, the #1 reason is because they don’t feel appreciated. As much as we pay out in salary, benefits, and various perks, we know that the best people we hire are giving us far more in return. And so we say thank-you. And not just during formal reviews. We’re paying more attention to softer, everyday rewards and motivators—whether it is public acknowledgment of a job well done, extra vacation time, or an invitation to a senior-level gathering.

7. Acknowledge their personal brand: This sounds like complete marketing-speak, but the fact is that the people we hire aren’t just building our brand and our clients’ brands; they’re building their own brands, too. They have to be in this era of free-agency talent, when careers are built not within a single company, but very often across industries. What does this mean on a practical basis? It means we support skills acquisition, the accumulation of a broad base of experiences, and we encourage entrepreneurship and outside interests.

8. Be age blind: Just because you were weaned on Han Solo’s Star Wars, not Jar Jar Binks’, doesn’t mean you can’t be a seriously creative digital innovator. In the same way, the fact that you’re a millennial doesn’t mean you’re not ready to lead a client meeting. The diversity of our company is one of our greatest strengths, and our people-centered approach means we’re not going to pigeonhole our talent according to their birth dates. If you’re ready to take on huge responsibilities, we’ll encourage you to do so. And we’re never going to assume the best digital person for a particular job has to be south of 40. Just show us what you can do.

9. Support life-work integration: The digital age means it’s getting harder and harder to detach from work. If you work in an office, no matter what industry you’re in, you’re more likely than not taking work home with you, responding to texts on the weekends, and even checking email while on vacation. We try to balance that out by not creating a workspace that’s a personal-free zone. If you need to do some online shopping or post a Vine while at the office, fine. If your volunteer work would be made easier with our equipment, then by all means use it when it’s not needed for agency business. Our new digital tools mean life and work have been blended—and that shouldn’t be all one-way.

10. Give them something to believe in: There are a number of components to job satisfaction: Being paid what you think you deserve is one. Enjoying what you do is another. And now, increasingly, we’re looking to feel good about what we do—to feel our jobs are tied into our personal values and are in some way contributing to the greater good. It’s no coincidence that Havas executives have produced two books in recent years that speak to the importance of businesses doing good (Who Cares Wins and Good for Business). We’re serious about the role we believe business in general—and communications groups in particular—should be playing in addressing some of society’s most pressing problems. When I interviewed Walt Freese for The Talent Mandate, he said that at Ben & Jerry’s he “strove to create a culture where people didn’t need to park any part of themselves at the door, especially not their hearts and souls.” Our company takes our societal obligations as a business entity—and as individuals—seriously, and we offer plenty of avenues for our talent to get involved, whether through our sustainability leadership efforts, One Young World, or our pro-bono work. 94% of the business leaders we surveyed said companies with clear values have an edge in recruiting top candidates. We think we have that edge.

Android Never Ceases To Amaze Me; My Personal Mind-Blown Moment On Christmas Day

by AndroidSPIN

android never ceases to amaze meI don’t pretend to be an expert at Android; I haven’t even rooted my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and I still use TouchWiz. But I do like to think that I know most of the functions of Android, enough to be able to pick up any phone and use it quite extensively. So when I came across something on my Note 2 yesterday that I’d never seen before, I had a bit of a ‘mind-blown’ moment. Time for a story…

It was Christmas Day, the night was winding down and I was at the table with friends playing word games. One of my friends commented that Siri on her iPhone was configured to Cantonese and that it would always detect that she was saying something, even when she wasn’t. To counter this, she needed to find the menu to change Siri’s native language, a feat which was only accessible through the search menu, which in iOS 7 is now ‘hidden’ unintuitively (preditable, really). As it turns out, you access it by swiping down in the middle of the screen, but before arriving at this conclusion, another friend was convinced that this menu could be accessed by swiping down with two fingers. Naturally, this was incorrect, but I thought to myself “does swiping down with two fingers even do anything on an Android phone?”. As it turns out, it does.

Android Never Ceases To Amaze MeMany of you will be familiar with this screen, or at least a variation of it, on your Android device. This is just the standard navigation menu when swiping down with one finger from the top. Lo’ and behold, if you swipe down with two fingers instead, you are greeted with this instead:

Android Never Ceases To Amaze MeNow, I did consider that this was specific to the Note 2 running Android 4.3 as this second menu as seen above is just all the quick menu buttons on the one screen, but I tested this on my friend’s Nexus 4 as well and swiping down with two fingers brought about a different menu as well.

The question here is not if you have this functionality, though it would be nice to know which phones and software builds can actually do this; rather, I’d like to ask everyone whether you’ve had a similar ‘mind-blown’ moment where you realised how amazing Android is or been surprised that there’s actually been a function you’d not known existed before and is very useful. Let us know your stories in the comments below. And Merry Christmas to you all!

Virtual reality check: why controllers haven't caught up to the Oculus Rift

by Sean Hollister

When you put on the Oculus Rift, a virtual-reality headset, it feels like you're in another world. You can turn your head in any direction and see things that don't exist as if they were right in front of you. But the moment is short-lived. As soon as you try to move your hands, feet, or body, the illusion begins to crumble. The Rift's immersion only extends to your head. "The virtual-reality experience is not going to be complete with just the visual side," Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey admits. "You absolutely need to have an input and output system that is fully integrated, so you not only have a really natural way to view the virtual world but also a natural way to interact with it."

"We don't have that, and it makes me sad,"...

Father of computer science Alan Turing issued royal pardon 59 years after his death

by Rich McCormick
Maxim Bange

R.I.P. once more Alan

British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing was convicted of "gross indecency" in 1952, before being sentenced to chemical castration. Now, 59 years after his death from cyanide poisoning in an apparent suicide, he has been issued a posthumous pardon by Queen Elizabeth. Turing — who was instrumental in cracking the Nazi Enigma code during World War II and designed ACE, one of the world's first stored-program computers — received the conviction for his homosexuality, and underwent a series of injections that left him impotent and growing breasts.

The pardon was granted under the Royal Prerogative of Mercy after a request from Chris Grayling, the British government's Justice Minister, and comes after a lengthy...

First phone to ship with CyanogenMod is now on sale for $599

by Adrianne Jeffries

The highly-anticipated Oppo N1 is finally on sale for $599 at limited retailers and the Oppo store.

The device is one of the more creative-looking Android phones, with a swiveling camera and a separate button accessory. But it's significant because of its software: customers can choose either Android or CyanogenMod, the heavily-modified version of Android favored by people who like to hack on their phones. The limited edition CyanogenMod version comes in baby blue with the company's logo.

The N1 is the only device to come preinstalled with CyanogenMod, but it's all been cleared by Google: Mountain View has certified the device, allowing the N1 to include Google Play and Google apps. Cyanogen has also released the source code so that N1...

Icelanders protest highway construction to protect the environment and nearby elves

by Adrianne Jeffries

A massive highway project was halted, then restarted in Iceland after activists raised concerns about its impact on the environment.

The primary issue, brought by a coalition of groups before the country's supreme court, is the encroachment on a lava field that was designated a protected area in 2009. The secondary issue, which has captured many more headlines, is the welfare of Huldufolk, or elven "hidden folk" who may be living nearby.

Polls say a majority of Icelanders are at least open to the idea of the existence of elves, and concern for elven well-being has halted construction projects before. This endearing trivia has been regurgitated in travelogues and news articles, and there are some elf advocates protesting this road...

Supposed 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 screens in Production for Galaxy S5

by AndroidSPIN

Samsung Galaxy S5One more year is almost over and that means that the next flagship devices will start to make their appearances. Well, at least the rumored specs and leaked confirmations. There is no doubt in any ones mind that Samsung will make a Galaxy S5. There will also be a Note 4 and probably a slew of new Note tablets and a Tab4. It is what Samsung does. So what is the Galaxy S5 going to be? A little bigger, a little better and a little more, well, Samsungy.

If Samsung keeps up with the trend they started with the Note 2 – Note 3 and the Galaxy SIII – Galaxy S4 we can expect a slight screen size bump with a smaller bezel and staying fairly close to the same size as the current Galaxy S4. That brings in the recent report that Samsung is in mass production of a new 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 display that will likely be used for the Galaxy S5. Which follows up a previous report based on benchmark findings that that is the screen size that will be used.

This all follows up with other reports that the Galaxy S5 will be pulling in a 64-bit version of their quad-core octa-core processor, mostly for the international devices we bet. While the US will probably see a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Anything is possible though. There has also been talks of 3GB of RAM and a 13MP camera. However, as Gotta Be Mobile has pointed out, there is also suggestions that Samsung has been testing out a 16MP camera that could find its way into the device. Not to mention some version of Android 4.4 and speculation of an eye scanner for unlocking the device.

Samsung should be pulling out all the stops with the Galaxy S5, with that much power and that larger of screen with that resolution, they better be packing in one heck of a battery.

What do you guys think of all of this? Are you of the variety that Samsung needs to quite trying to push the screen tech and focus more on software and updates, or are you ready to pull out the credit card for a 2k res phone?

Target Hackers Stole Encrypted Bank PINs On Top Of 40 Million Credit Cards

by Jim Finkle and David Henry, Reuters

target woman

BOSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The hackers who attacked Target Corp and compromised up to 40 million credit cards and debit cards also managed to steal encrypted personal identification numbers (PINs), according to a senior payments executive familiar with the situation.

One major U.S. bank fears that the thieves would be able to crack the encryption code and make fraudulent withdrawals from consumer bank accounts, said the executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the data breach is still under investigation.

Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said "no unencrypted PIN data was accessed" and there was no evidence that PIN data has been "compromised." She confirmed that some "encrypted data" was stolen, but declined to say if that included encrypted PINs.

"We continue to have no reason to believe that PIN data, whether encrypted or unencrypted, was compromised. And we have not been made aware of any such issue in communications with financial institutions to date," Snyder said by email. "We are very early in an ongoing forensic and criminal investigation."

The No. 3 U.S. retailer said last week that hackers stole data from as many as 40 million cards used at Target stores during the first three weeks of the holiday shopping season, making it the second-largest data breach in U.S. retail history.

Target has not said how its systems were compromised, though it described the operation as "sophisticated." The U.S. Secret Service and the Justice Department are investigating. Officials with both agencies have declined comment on the investigations.

The attack could end up costing hundreds of millions of dollars, but it is unclear so far who will bear the expense.

While bank customers are typically not liable for losses because of fraudulent activity on their credit and debit cards, JPMorgan Chase & Co and Santander Bank said they have lowered limits on how much cash customers can take out of teller machines and spend at stores.

The unprecedented move has led to complaints from consumer advocates about the inconvenience it caused from the late November Thanksgiving holiday into the run-up to Christmas. But sorting out account activity after a fraudulent withdrawal could take a lot more time and be worse for customers.

JPMorgan has said it was able to reduce inconvenience by giving customers new debit cards printed quickly at many of its branches, and by keeping branches open for extended hours. A Santander spokeswoman was not available for comment on Tuesday.

Security experts said it is highly unusual for banks to reduce caps on withdrawals, and the move likely reflects worries that PINs have fallen into criminal hands, even if they are encrypted.

"That's a really extreme measure to take," said Avivah Litan, a Gartner analyst who specializes in cyber security and fraud detection. "They definitely found something in the data that showed there was something happening with cash withdrawals."

BREAKING THE CODE

While the use of encryption codes may prevent amateur hackers from obtaining the digital keys to customer bank deposits, the concern is the coding cannot stop the kind of sophisticated cyber criminal who was able to infiltrate Target for three weeks.

Daniel Clemens, CEO of Packet Ninjas, a cyber security consulting firm, said banks were prudent to lower debit card limits because they will not know for sure if Target's PIN encryption was infallible until the investigation is completed.

As an example of potential vulnerabilities in PIN encryption, Clemens said he once worked for a retailer who hired his firm to hack into its network to find security vulnerabilities. He was able to access the closely guarded digital "key" used to unscramble encrypted PINs, which he said surprised his client, who thought the data was secure.

In other cases, hackers can get PINs by using a tool known as a "RAM scraper," which captures the PINs while they are temporarily stored in memory, Clemens said.

The attack on Target began on November 27, the day before the Thanksgiving holiday and continued until December 15. Banks that issue debit and credit cards learned about the breach on December 18, and Target publicly disclosed the loss of personal account data on December 19.

On December 21, JPMorgan, the largest U.S. bank, alerted 2 million of its debit cardholders that it was lowering the daily limits on ATM withdrawals to $100 and capping store purchases with their cards at $500.

On Monday, the bank partly eased the limits it had imposed on Saturday, setting them at $250 a day for ATM withdrawals and $1,000 a day for purchases. (The usual debit card daily limits are $200 to $500 for cash withdrawals and $500 for purchases, a bank spokeswoman said last week.)

On Monday, Santander - a unit of Spain's Banco Santander - followed suit, lowering the daily limits on cash withdrawals and purchases on Santander and Sovereign branded debit and credit cards of customers who used them at Target when the breach occurred. Santander did not disclose the new limits, but said it was monitoring the accounts and issuing new cards to customers who were affected.

The largest breach against a U.S. retailer, uncovered in 2007 at TJX Cos Inc, led to the theft of data from more than 90 million credit cards over about 18 months.

Koning stelt verbinding centraal
