The V30 is a smartphone completely out of the ordinary

LG has awakened a little bit behind the best on the mobile front for a few years. But this year they seem to have added an extra gear, and the latest character on it is called V30. LG’s new mobile flagship received great attention when the phone was launched a month ago , and now it has appeared for testing.

We are talking about a phone that goes straight in the throat of the established top models.

It’s Samsung that currently is in the top right if you’re going to have the best-known Android phones. But maybe the LG V30 may be as good a choice as a Galaxy S8 or a Note 8 ?

The LG V30 has been tested for five days and has clearly shown why it should also be considered if you want the best of the best.

The V series from LG has always been good. Both the V10 and V20 were excellent phones, but both focused on exciting features that may not be for everyone. While size and design might be a bit fierce for the wide team of mobile buyers.

What really is fun with the V30 is that it gets to do both. Here, both mobile phones get a lot of great functionality to play with, while the mobile phone has a great design and somewhat customizable size. The V30 is thus the top-rated nerd mobiles that “everyone” can and may even buy.

The biggest downside here is the price, which is expected to be somewhere between 8500 and 9500 kroner. We are therefore talking about the highest price levels here and a cost that is probably the highest for many mobile buyers.

The V30 is lighter than all its direct competitors. And it is extraordinary when switching between it and a physically larger phone like Note 8, as I did during the test period. It’s only 0.3 inches in screen size here, but you’re willing to relinquish the tiny screen and a pen will get you almost 40 grams of lighter mobile.

Fantastic display

The screen that stretches over it all has a lilac border around it, but the design is decided by the so-called rameless battle. There are only a few millimeters around the screen, either face up, down or on the sides. The small border of the pages starts approximately where the weak bend begins, thus reducing the risk of misprints along the edges of the screen, as well as making screen choices along the edges a bit easier to hit.

The image quality on the screen is among the best we’ve seen, and it especially impresses when watching HDR video with high levels of light and contrast in the image. The effect has made it possible for small screens to look bigger than they are.

However, it is a pity that some video services will not fully fill the screen. Netflix, Viaplay and HBO Nordic work well and Youtube fills the screen if the video is adapted to the 18: 9 format screen is in. Amazon Prime and NRK do not fill the screen.

The menus are lightning fast. The mobile being tested is a little early copy of the V30, so it’s all the more impressive how stable and good it is.

LG has usually added a whole bunch of tools, such as file explorer and an advanced and sound audio recorder, for example for meeting or concert use.

Stands out

The LG V30 really stands out on your camera and audio. Are you among those who are still annoyed that Apple and a number of other mobile manufacturers have removed the headset connector?

In that case, the LG V30 has good news for you. Inside the phone there is a powerful amplifier solution that, along with the headphone jack, ensures that the phone can operate headphones that are usually too heavy-powered for anything other than desktop amplifiers. The solution works extremely well and includes a variety of ways to fine tune the sound. A bangless set of ear plugs from Bang & Olufsen also follows. You do not really need any other headphones than this, but if you already have it, the V30 has the power and sound quality needed.

The dual camera on the back is missing the classic portable feature you get at competitors like Apple and Huawei and many more, but LG takes on other ways. First, it takes very good pictures in most conditions – even when it’s a bit dark.

Secondly, manual photography is made easy as a game. Here you get all the choices you’re used to in professional modes, but with preview images, the phone selects settings for a given type of image for you. However, if the settings are not completely correct, you will be explained what to do – for example, turning up the exposure.

A video recorder that is at least equally advanced and fun belongs to. Being able to make color grading of 4K video while recording is definitely not very common.

A different full-screen phone

Here, LG has gone its own ways at some important points, while following the important trends in the market, where the full-screen display might be the most important right now. Waterproofing has become common in this price range, and it has V30 as well.

But LG takes it a bit further here too. The phone has been tested to handle cases from 1.2 meters. Both waterproofing and possible impact resistance should be considered more as an additional safety than a guarantee. But should the phone go down the hill, it’s good to know that the manufacturer has at least done something to make sure it’s resistant to strabs.

All in all, the LG V30 is all along with Samsung’s top models. Choosing the V30, Galaxy S8, S8 + or Note 8 depends on the types of extras you appreciate and the number of phones you prefer. Is the headphone more important than the pen? In that case, the V30 is a strong card.
