Haywood’s Guide to Getting Out of the City

by mollybrown

Hustle and bustle is hard, and living life at the speed of Atlanta can be exhausting. Sometimes taking a step back for a few days is the trick to stepping up your game in your daily life. Lucky for you, the perfect escape from the concrete jungle and into wide-open spaces is just a hop, skip, and jump away. Get ready and pack your bags, because this is your guide to getting out of the city – in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains.

Take a Scenic Drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway

First, that chill Spotify playlist you have saved? Cue it and start your getaway adventure with a scenic drive in Maggie Valley, where the only blues you’ll have are the hues in the skies above the Blue Ridge Parkway. Haywood County boasts over forty-six miles of the parkway, including the most breathtaking views from its highest section of the Blue Ridge.

Campers & Cottages, Hotels & Motels – OH MY!

Whether you’re a camper, glamper, or prefer traditional lodging options, the NC Smokies has the space for you. Maybe you’re looking for more authentic experience led by one of our local bed & breakfasts like the Red Leaf River Inn, or a secluded getaway in a log cabin like Bella Vita. Whatever escape looks like to you, we have endless places to find it.

Pedal in Chestnut Mountain Park

Need some fresh air and a clear head? Foot to pedal, you’ll be sure to clear your mind as you travel through the mosaic of habitats in Chestnut Mountain Park in Canton. With more than 450 acres of land, the park features picnic areas, multi-use trails for both hikers and bikers, and lusciously green scenery. If you’re looking for an active biking experience, Berm Park (inside of Chestnut Mountain Park) is a free public park featuring a safe skills course with trails for beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert bikers.

Take a Float Down Pigeon River

Prefer water over land? What better way to wash away your stress than by tubing down Pigeon River? Riding these waters is a real treat, and a great way to soak in some vitamin D as you float past Canton’s landmarks. Grab your tube from Pigeon River Outfitters and travel over to BearWaters Brewery to have a brew!

Haywood County Tourism Campaign

Do Some Wildlife Watching in Cataloochee Valley

Into some wildlife watching? Looking to fill your camera with some cool shots? Visit Cataloochee Valley, one of the most remote parts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s home to abundant wildflowers and animal species including elk, white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkey, butterflies, and birds. It also features streams for fishing, preserved buildings from the 1900’s, and hiking trails.

While these are our favorite outdoor activities, there are a number of local activities to enjoy in Haywood County during your time away from the city. For more ways to enjoy Haywood County, visit our website at visitncsmokies.com. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Hattie B’s Brings Its Hot Chicken to 10th and Howell Mill August 3

by Beth McKibben

This Hattie B’s is the only location with a private dining room and a meatless “hot chicken” sandwich on the menu, too

The westside Atlanta location of Hattie B’s Hot Chicken officially opens for business Wednesday, August 3, at the corner of 10th Street and Howell Mill Road. And it’s the only Hattie B’s with a private dining room and a meatless “hot chicken” sandwich on the menu.

While this location was slated to become Hattie B’s largest restaurant yet, that honor ultimately went to the Deep Elum location in Dallas, which opened earlier this year. But it is the only Hattie B’s to include a private dining room seating up to 48 people. The regular dining room and bar seats 92 people, with additional seating for 42 people on the courtyard patio.

As for the menu, expect Hattie B’s signature fried chicken served as sandwiches or plates in six levels of heat: Southern (no heat), mild, medium, hot, damn hot to the daredevil’s dream, and Shut the Cluck Up. The menu also features Southern sides like black eyed pea salad and cheese grits and offers banana pudding and peach cobbler for dessert.

 Joseph Woodley

Two new menu items are being tested out at the westside location over the next month: fried pickles coated with Hattie B’s hot spices with a choice of sauces and a meatless hot chicken sandwich. While the sandwich doesn’t include meat, it does come served on a brioche bun with Hattie B’s Comeback Sauce and a side of coleslaw, both of which include mayo.

Also exclusive to the westside restaurant are draft cocktails, including a take on Ranch Water with gin, a dill pickle-infused Bloody Mary, and a Painkiller. In addition to cocktails, look for beers from Georgia and Nashville on draft and in cans at the bar, along with boozy icees.

Nick Bishop Sr. and his son Nick Bishop Jr. founded Hattie B’s in Nashville over a decade ago. The father-son duo opened the first Atlanta location in 2018 on Moreland Avenue in a former 1950s Phillips 66 gas station. The building was previously home to Little Five Points Coin Laundry.

711 10th Street NW, Atlanta. hattieb.com. Open Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some parking available on site, with paid parking available across the street at the Osprey. Accessible via the #12 MARTA bus.

The Appalachian Rip Van Winkle

by stories@appalcast.com (Steve Gilly, Rod Mullins)
In the Washington Irving story, Rip Van Winkle partakes in some boozy fun in the Catskill Mountains in New York, then falls asleep for 20 years, waking to find the world completely changed. That story was a fantasy tale.

Today we have the true story of a woman who, like old Rip, fell asleep one night in 1936 and didn't wake up until 1948 to a world turned upside down.

Thanks for listening to our stories!

Do Bug Zappers Work? Yeah—About As Well As Any Other Indiscriminate Wildlife Slaughter.

by Doug Mahoney
Two bug zappers shown hanging in a tree next to eachother.

Bug zappers kill bugs by the thousands. But there’s a problem: They kill the wrong bugs. They are ineffective against mosquitoes and other biting flies, and their otherwise indiscriminate killing can disrupt pollination and generally throw the environment out of balance. Plus, the force of their electrocution can spew a mist of disease-ridden bug parts out into the air. All of the mosquito experts we spoke with and every relevant university extension office we could find unanimously condemned bug zappers. To keep an area free of bugs or to prevent yourself from getting bitten, there are much better alternatives.
