This B- list mostly television actress has pretty much stayed in that position for her entire career. Sometimes she moves up slightly, but she has always been consistent and has been on one television show after the other. Some hits and some misses. She told producers she would walk off the set of her current show and quit if they attempted to make her a lesbian. Acting or not, she is dead set against it and it goes against her values.

Savor a Long Weekend in San Francisco with Adventures by Disney

by Terry Brinkoetter
Kristen

Do you want to turn a $500 trip into a $3000 trip? Read on!

I’m lucky to have visited San Francisco many times, but not until my recent Adventures by Disney Long Weekend did I realize how much I’d missed on previous visits.

LWISF364011

It’s tempting to say I felt like a “local,” but this Adventures by Disney itinerary includes things Bay Area residents can only dream of doing. Hello exclusive visit to the Lucasfilm campus in the San Francisco Presidio! Why, yes, thank you for that private lunch and a wine-blending experience in the barrel room of Silverado Vineyards. And it doesn’t get more “Disney,” than a privately guided tour of The Walt Disney Family Museum.

LWISF364012

These are just a few highlights from the chock-full four days and three nights that make up this discovery of the City by the Bay. On the second morning of our adventure many in the group said we’d seen and done so much that it already felt like a full vacation.

Everybody knows that San Francisco is a sightseer’s paradise with iconic attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf. While those never lose their appeal, Adventures by Disney offers a chance to experience the diversity that makes San Francisco so special – cosmopolitan flair, scenic natural wonders, historical sights and much more.

One of the many pleasant surprises about this weekend adventure was how outdoorsy it is. We biked along the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge and hiked the inspiring Muir Woods. There were less-active choices available, but tandem bikes and other options made these activities suitable for pretty much everybody. Later, a quick boat ride to Angel Island and we had breathtaking views of the city and bay and the perfect spot for a picnic lunch.

LWISF364013

San Francisco offers so much to see and do that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and miss a lot. Not to worry, Adventures by Disney took care of everything to make sure we got the most from our trip. Adventure Guides, Eleni and Emily, were like two Fairy Godmothers handling every detail.

LWISF364014

Our Adventures by Disney travel posse included lots of kids, moms and dads, young adults and Grandpa “Bumpa” Bob on his first big travel adventure. By the end of the trip we all felt like family promising to stay in touch. That’s not unusual, with families often becoming lifelong friends with one another and taking more Adventures by Disney trips together.

Yes, you may leave your heart in San Francisco, but with Adventures by Disney you’ll take away a lifetime of memories.

Curbed National: Devil in the Details: Can DiCaprio & Scorsese Recreate Devil in the White City?

by Curbed Staff

Bill?

Photo montage by Jeremiah Budin

Erik Larson's beloved book Devil in the White City will finally exit development purgatory after years of inaction and a multi-studio bidding war, according to Deadline Hollywood, with Martin Scorsese set to direct and Leonardo DiCaprio signed on to play serial killer HH Holmes. While the reunion of the director and performer, and the realization of a much-delayed project, are both reasons to get excited, we're just as hyped about the idea of bringing the architecture of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition to the silver screen, and of seeing today's actors portray architectural legends. We know Leo's playing the bad guy, and that this will likely be a blockbuster. Considering the budget that might be available, who should be cast for the parts of Burnham, Root, Frederick Law Olmsted and others?

Curbed Maps: 17 Free and Air Conditioned Spots to Help You Survive a Los Angeles Heatwave

I thought that one picture looked like the interior of an embassy suites and , indeed, it is. They suggest hanging out inside the LAX embassy suites.

air con map header.jpg

Los Angeles is headed for a heatwave that will push temperatures up into the triple digits in parts of LA (Burbank and Woodland Hills have been namedropped) through the weekend. For those non-weekend workers who live in non-air-conditioned residences, this is not great news. Fortunately, there are many free places to visit around town that are both cool temperature-wise and cool in the 1950s beatnik way, plus (more or less) free—that combination makes them the perfect places to be when things heat up. We've mapped out 17 right here:

let's buy this house. there is even a water fountain for robotron.

Designed by architect/AIA Fellow Richard Leitch as his own residence, the 1954 house sits on a 13,462-square-foot lot surrounded by large oak trees. As expected with mid-century houses, this one has those walls of glass and clerestory windows, and a vintage sensibility that's kept very modern with concrete floors, stone counters, and, in the two bathrooms, cool mosaic-tile shower enclosures. Every window offers a look out to the yard, where there's a pool, two interior courtyards, and an "entertaining platform" among the trees. The recently-restored, three-bedroom house is asking $1.175 million.

The Commute: Metro Survey Shows Sexual Harassment is Slightly Down

by Curbed Staff
Kristen

Screen Shot 2015-08-05 at 5.22.27 PM.png

Metro has released the data from their "semi-annual" customer satisfaction survey of bus and train riders. The Source says nearly 20,000 riders filled out surveys asking about their opinions on everything from station cleanliness to how safe they feel riding Metro vehicles. The latest survey data comes off the heels of recent Metro plans to curb sexual harassment and decrease the travel times of its bus fleet. Since the previous Metro (where a disturbing 22 percent of riders on trains and buses reported experiencing sexual harassment), they have increased the specificity and amount of questions asked about instances of harassment on Metro buses and trains.

Rather than fit under an all encompassing question of whether customers had been sexually harassed, this survey delineates between non-physical sexual harassment, instances of groping, and indecent exposure. They found 18 percent of bus riders and 21 percent of train riders had experienced sexual harassment in general (a slight drop). 7 percent of all respondents for both bus and rail said they had experienced inappropriate touching or groping. 7 percent of bus riders had experienced indecent exposure versus 10 percent of train riders. Overall the number of people getting sexually harassed is down from last year's survey, but (in terms of general harassment) identical to the numbers from the winter 2013 survey.

As for those total trip times, both wait times and total travel times have not experienced significant drops in the past few surveys. This will probably change in the next survey when the Metro goes through with plans to speed up service through strategic cuts to existing routes.

A final standout statistic: the median income of metro riders. Since 2013, the median income for both bus and train riders has fallen every year. (The median income of train riders remains significantly higher than bus riders, though.) —Jeff Wattenhofer

Silicon Beach is a Thing: 280-Square-Foot Venice Cottage With No Kitchen Asking $1.3M

by Adrian Glick Kudler
Kristen

Do enough people who work for snapchat or hulu (or a startup) make enough money to afford million dollar shacks and then put in another million to live in it? I honestly have no idea. After renovations the payments could be close to $8,000/month.

15-921385_0.jpg

Real estate in Venice in the last year or so has been a swiftly escalating exercise in topping itself in ridiculousness. Let's see: there was a falling-apart shack that sold for $1.44 million, then a one-bedroom stucco hut asking $2.2 million and featuring actual fingers in the listing photos (in more than one photo!!). Now let's meet this actually charming-seeming 1926 cottage near Windward Circle (and thus the beach), which nevertheless is still tiny, a total mess, and asking more than a million dollars.

The house is just 280 square feet with no kitchen and only half a bathroom, and it is in need of "a serious rehab." It's being used as an architect's office right now and the property is zoned for commercial use, but in such a way that will probably allow for residential redevelopment. (That said, the lot is pretty little: 1,912 square feet.) Either way, there's gated parking for two to four cars, which might be worth the asking price alone. That asking price is $1.275 million.

The Wartime Biscuits You'll Actually Want to Eat

by What To Cook
Kristen

is this recipe even accurate?

It's always more fun to DIY. Every week, we'll spare you a trip to the grocery store and show you how to make small batches of great foods at home.

Today: Sophie Thompson of What to Cook introduces us to a wartime biscuit with timeless appeal.

ANZAC is short for the "Australian and New Zealand Army Corps" who fought in World War I, particularly those who landed at Gallipoli, where a battle against the then-Ottoman Empire took place on April 25, 1915. Anzac Day was inaugurated one year later to commemorate the first anniversary of the landing of the Anzac troops at Gallipoli. Today, the soldiers are memorialized through the ubiquitous Anzac biscuit.

Anzac Biscuits originated from the wives, mothers, and girlfriends who were concerned about the nutritional value of the food supplied to their men in Gallipoli. Because the ships took so long to get from Australia and New Zealand all the way over to Turkey, most of the food they shipped would go rancid on-board. So women at home came up with a solution using the spoil-proof ingredients that were readily available to them: oats, sugar, flour, coconut, butter, golden syrup or treacle, baking soda, and water.

One-hundred years later, Anzac biscuits are still sold at supermarkets and bakeries all throughout the year in Australia and New Zealand. Store-bought versions, however, having nothing on homemade biscuits, which are so easy to make. Traditionally, Anzac biscuits are very crunchy, but I prefer the chewy version so I shortened the baking time to just 9 to 11 minutes. If you want to make the crunchy version, just bake them for approximately 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Chewy Anzac Biscuits

Makes 20 biscuits

1 cup rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup finely desiccated coconut
125 grams butter
2 tablespoons golden syrup
2 tablespoons cold water
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat the oven to 320° F (285° F for convection ovens). Line a baking tray with parchment.

In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, sugar, and coconut. Set aside.

Place the butter, syrup, and cold water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir it for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the butter has melted, and then add the baking soda and mix into well combined.

Add the butter and syrup mixture to the oat mixture and combine well. Fill a tablespoon with cookie dough, level it off, and then form the scoops into balls. Place them onto the prepared baking sheet approximately 2 inches apart, using the back of a spoon to flatten each slightly.

Place the pan on a low rack of your oven and bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until lightly golden. (If you prefer the traditional crunchier biscuit, bake them for 14 to 15 minutes.) Remove them from the oven and transfer the biscuits to a wire rack. Let them stand for 5 minutes to cool completely, then serve.

See the full recipe (and save and print it) here.

Take Olympic: Whoa, LA Could Be Back in the Running For the 2024 Olympics

by Bianca Barragan
Kristen

Texas has ruined everything for us!

2014-05-02%20at%208%20SCCOG.png

In January, the US Olympic Committee knocked Los Angeles out of the running for the 2024 Olympics and instead chose Boston as the US contender for the games (Boston??). That was weird, but kind of understandable—Boston apparently had a whole plan for close-knit, walkable clusters of Olympic action that the USOC loved. But now that plan is getting redrawn and Olympic officials are starting to get impatient with the new plans (the New York Times says it's in part because many proposed venues in the bid "had not been vetted with some of the landlords or the public." Oops.) And that's making Los Angeles look pretty good again—maybe even good enough for the USOC to drop Boston, says Olympics-focused website 3WireSports.

Back when the USOC took their vote, Boston was not chosen in a landslide; there was, in fact, "a spirited discussion and more than one round of voting." And flash forward to a recent meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland, where officials were openly contemptuous of the Boston Bid—one official reportedly remarked "They had their opportunity. They fucked it around."—but showed some not-terrible feelings for Los Angeles.

At this point, Olympics officials seem to feel the same way many of the people of Massachusetts feel. A statewide poll showed that only 39 percent of residents were in favor of Boston hosting the Games, says the NY Times. More people (49 percent) were outright against the city hosting.

Okay, so Boston's not looking so hot, but why should Los Angeles get excited? For starters, though San Francisco and Washington, DC were also competing in the last round for the bid, neither of them was seen as a "plausible" candidate for the Olympics, 3WireSports says. And one senior IOC member straight-up proclaimed, "Los Angeles is better than Boston." (Duh.) This is what LA's bid looked like.

But just because LA is selected as the USOC's American city of choice for the 2024 Games, doesn't at all mean it'll get the Olympics. For one thing, the IOC doesn't love the idea of sending a bunch of international tourists into a country known for its mass shootings and love of guns. 3WireSports says:

One [IOC] member, reflecting on the imminent signing of a Texas law allowing the open carrying of handguns in public and of concealed handguns on state university campuses — the governor would sign it last weekend — said that measure alone ought to spell the end of the Boston bid. Or, for that matter, Los Angeles, if it came to that.

Alice, Seat Saving: Okay or No Way? — Ask Alice: Advice for Life at Home

by Ask Alice
Kristen

We went to Jurassic World this weekend and the theater has assigned seating. A group of maybe 6 people showed up to the theater and someone was sitting in their assigned seats. The people who took their seats refused to move even when the manager showed up. I don't even know what goes through your head when you refuse to move in that situation. At the end of the movie there were security guards and managers waiting for the rude people at the exit.

Dear Alice,

I am of the opinion that it is incredibly rude to save seats or to ask others already seated to move for a group. It's one thing to hold a seat for a friend who's running to the bathroom or grabbing a drink, but to show up early for an event with limited seating and save ten seats or more? To save a row of seats on an airplane or several deck chairs at the pool by placing items on them? I was recently at a high school graduation event and a woman was saving an entire table of about a dozen seats. As the event was starting, three people had shown up to join her and she still didn't want to share the table, even though a lot of other people had nowhere to sit! Is there some way to put a stop to this craziness? Or am I the rude one? I have never asked someone to move or tried to save seats when meeting a group! I get us all there early, or split up and sit separately.

Thanks for the advice,

Sage Sitter

On the Market: Here is a Bright White Circular 1970s Mansion in Rancho Mirage That's Cool as Heck

let's move there.

Rancho Mirage's Thunderbird Heights neighborhood is so hoity-toity that rumors that the president is moving in actually seem plausible (but ultimately are untrue). It's in that ultrawealthy corner of RM that this effortlessly hip spaceship house is located. The circular house includes a circular patio surrounded by a circular pool. (Wait, is there a theme here?) The interior feels kind of like it could be the outside, thanks to large expanses of curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that afford views of the 1.17-acre property. Minimal white decor and terrazzo floors run throughout the house, which has a 90-foot diameter and four bedrooms; the sleek kitchen has what appear to be marble countertops and an island with bar-style seating. Last sold in 2004 for $1.7 million, it's now listed for $4.5 million.
