Los Angeles Has Rocketed Up the List of Bedbuggiest Cities

by Bianca Barragan

WHY AREN'T BED BUGS EXTINCT YET?!

bedbugs los angeles.jpg

On the 2014 Terminix list of most bedbug-riddled cities in the nation, the Los Angeles metro area was number 14. But on the most recent 2015 list out from the pest control company, LA has rocketed through the ranks all the way to the number four spot. It's a huge victory for bedbugs and a crushing defeat for the blood-filled humans of LA. Terminix compiled its horrific list (via BoingBoing) by adding up "inbound lead data from the more than 300 [of its] branches across the country," and then ranking metros according to the volume of calls from January to mid-December last year. See the top 10 bedbuggiest cities:

This year was a big, sad victory for Philly, which was unseated from its four-year position at the top of the list by Detroit.

1) Detroit, MI
2) Philadelphia, PA
3) Cleveland-Akron, OH
4) Los Angeles, CA
5) Dayton, OH
6) Chicago, IL

Police Finally Going After the Rich Old Dude Surf Gang That Rules a Palos Verdes Beach

To surfers who know the spot and the people who live near it, Lunada Bay is famed for its frighteningly territorial surfers. Known colloquially as the Bay Boys, this group of white, wealthy, middle-aged surfers have reportedly kept outsiders out of the water by throwing rocks, verbally harassing, and, in some cases, physically assaulting people attempting to surf on the public beach in wealthy Palos Verdes Estates. For many years, this has gone on more or less with impunity (critics say the local police have long looked the other way), but the new Palos Verdes police chief says he's going to come down hard on the old-man surf gang, the AP reports.

Jeff Kepley, the new chief of police, has been on the job for about a year, and says he's ready to step up enforcement to catch the Bay Boys in action. Kepley tells the LA Times that the police are adding patrols along the coast and that officers are working overtime. He's hoping the extra effort will lead to an arrest, the first for a Bay Boy in years. "We will make an example out of anyone who behaves criminally down there," Kepley said.

The Bay Boys rose to notoriety beyond the Palos Verdes Peninsula when two undercover journalists for the Guardian filmed themselves being threatened and harassed by the surf toughs, who eventually egged the journalists' car. (What is this, junior high?) The reporters also filmed their conversation with the police, which revealed the sort of hands-off approach that critics say has been local law enforcement's MO for too long. ("It is what it is. If you feel uncomfortable, you know, then don't do it," the reporters were told.) The Times says the Bay Boys have been a problem since at least 1995, when their actions prompted a protest on the bluff by the beach. The police came through checking for expired license plate tags and eventually dispersed the protest, "citing a bomb threat."

The new police chief didn't exactly acknowledge that the police have been allowing the Bay Boys' hooliganism, but he did promise, "[I]f we did discount a claim, and I'm not saying we did, we are going to make sure we do the right thing."

Two-Bedroom Condo in Koreatown's Historic Chateau Alpine Asking $674,000

by Pauline O'Connor
Kristen

this place is pretty interesting but 1 parking space for that neighborhood is probably a deal breaker.

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #928, Koreatown's Chateau Alpine was built in 1936. Just five years ago, you could have purchased the entire French Normandy Revival complex for just under $1.2 million, but ya didn't. C'est la vie. Today, just one of the building's six units is on the market for about half that, $674,000 (down from its July listing price of $699,000). Per the listing, the available unit measures 2,046 square feet and features two bedrooms, two baths, "ten-foot ceilings, custom extruded plaster mouldings, artisan fireplace, built-in china closets, a Euro style balcony," and a "large den/double ofc/rehearsal space." Monthly HOA dues for the condo, which also features some insensitive updates, are $437.

Shake Shack's Second LA Location Lands in Glendale Across the Americana at Brand

by Matthew Kang
Kristen

should we try it out?

You can finally have In-N-Out and Shake Shack side by side.

Rejoice, Glendale, because your town just got a thousand percent cooler. Shake Shack, the unstoppable fast-casual burger chain based in New York, is opening its second official Los Angeles-area location in Glendale, across the Americana at Brand next to the former Masonic Temple. Reps confirmed the news today, telling Eater that a late 2016 arrival is expected.

Placed across from one of LA's busiest shopping districts (and such spots as Bourbon SteakDin Tai Fung and even Cheesecake Factory), expect Shake Shack to join a bustling dining corridor. Another fun fact: it'll also be the closest Shake Shack to an In-N-Out Burger, which is down the street about a block away.

That means the comparisons between the two chains will be inevitable, with people taking sides like the Republicans and Democrats in the long struggle to determine which burger chain is better. But Glendale denizens won't care: having both burgers within a minute of each other is the best possible win imaginable.

Shake Shack's first LA location is slated for a mid-2016 debut in West Hollywood, and the pretty artwork just around the buildout is already becoming an Instagram destination.

Weekend Gun Violence at the Standard Hotel Downtown Leaves One Dead, Three Injured

by Farley Elliott
Kristen

I think maybe the people putting the party on were right to leave this person off their guestlist

The terrible scene followed an alleged dispute in the lobby.

A terrible scene unfolded over the weekend in Downtown Los Angeles as four people were shot at the Standard Hotel on Flower Street.

According to the LA Timesthe sudden burst of gunfire erupted in the wee hours of Sunday morning, allegedly following a guest list dispute for a party on Saturday night. The shooting left one person dead, another likely paralyzed, and two more victims sent to the hospital.

Police are hesitant to confirm a motive (or suspects) at this time, but several witnesses on site described a fight that broke out in the lobby prior to the violence. Shortly thereafter, gunfire rang out near the elevators and spilled out onto the sidewalk out front, shattering glass and leaving four victims, none of whom have been publicly identified at this time. The next morning, a nearby parking attendant found a discarded handgun in an adjacent lot, reports the Times.

The violence inside the Standard over the weekend has some reflecting on the still rapidly-changing Downtown neighborhood overall. Police have been saying for some time that violent crime is up in the area (more than 55% compared to last year, says one report), due in part to a crime reclassification effort by the police.

Despite opening in 2002 and seeing much of the transformation in Downtown over the past decade or so, there have been relatively few incidences of violence at and around the dining and nightlife destination.

Scientist: We Should Just Let the LA River Flood Sometimes

by Bianca Barragan
Kristen

This sounds nuts to me. I'm guessing the amount of homeowners near the river who have flood insurance is pretty low if something were to go wrong.

15185526152_5beeb3107f_z.jpg
Image via Joe B. / Curbed LA flickr pool

The soon-to-be-revitalized Los Angeles River is the concrete flood control channel that it is today because in the early days of the city it flooded frequently and disastrously, often enough and with devastating enough consequences that the Army Corps of Engineers and the city felt it needed to be constrained. But what if letting at least part of the river flood again could really help Los Angeles meet more of its water needs locally (instead of having to ship in water)? After more than four years of scarily little rainfall, that proposition is starting to sound less nuts these days, says TakePart. "Natural waterways allow more water to percolate down into underlying aquifers," and so allowing the river to overflow could possibly help boost LA's groundwater resources.

"If you let the river flood, which it historically did on a regular basis, there is a potential to accomplish a lot of recharge for the groundwater," says a hydrogeologist from UC Davis who has cowritten a study about moving back levees from irrigation channels in order to allow flooding and replenish groundwater in the parched Central Valley.

A "dream team" of local firms has in fact already created a plan that would allow parts of the Piggyback Yard site in Lincoln Heights—currently in use as a rail yard—to flood a few days out of the year, while serving primarily as a park. (Putting parks to use for flood control in Los Angeles dates back to the Olmsted Brothers' unimplemented plan for a glorious citywide networks of parks in Los Angeles.) That plan, says TakePart, "would allow for up to 60 percent of the 125-acre property to be inundated with storm water when the river bursts its banks (which used to happen every five to 20 years)." The water would be sucked into the ground through a network of wetlands and islands that would "replace" the concrete part of the river, while inflatable dams would divert and contain the water in a safe way.

However, an engineer with the consulting firm that worked on the Piggyback Yard proposal point out that there are many Downtown buildings with foundations that "reach into the water table, and their basements are regularly pumped to avoid flooding." The flooding plan, the engineer worried, would exacerbate the existing situation and "potentially creat[e] some very unhappy, very rich neighbors." (Furthermore, Piggyback Yard's owners, Union Pacific, don't seem to want to sell the property, not even for the good of the 2024 Olympics.) But with 51 miles of river between the Valley and Long Beach, and parks planned all along the way, there might be a lot of potentially suitable segments for flooding.

LA's already got big plans to recharge the groundwater via a combination of large- and small-scale projects in the Valley and across the city that seek to collect rainwater and put it back into the ground without letting the river flood.

Chili Cheese Fries Used as Weapon in Attempted Robbery at Glendale Fast Food Joint

by Farley Elliott
Kristen

!!! This is around the corner from our house.

Luckily, the perp was caught.

A Glendale woman is in custody today after forcing her way behind the counter at Troy’s Drive-In #6 on Glendale Avenue, demanding money and using her fingers as a pseudo-gun the whole way. What’s worse: she tried to assault someone with a plate of chili cheese fries.

The whole ordeal was chronicled by CBSLA who said the 40 year old woman, one Jennifer Santos, is now being kept in lock up in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Confusion reigned inside the restaurant on Sunday, when Santos walked in and attempted to rob the joint before punching at least one employee and shattering the glass front door. As for the chili cheese fries (a Troy’s staple), police said there’s uncertainty as to whose fries they were, though indications are that they didn’t actually land on anyone after being thrown around the place.

Ultimately Santos took off, but was nabbed nearby at a market, where she had apparently tried to steal some stuff. So, at least for now, the alleged fast food menace is behind bars.

Tucked into a cul de sac north of hip York Boulevard, this picturesque, not-so-little Craftsman cottage in Highland Park has 1,520 square feet of handsomely styled space (the owners are "two young TV home show designers") and wonderful details, like the Batchelder-tile-adorned mantle or Heath tile in the obviously updated galley kitchen. The kitchen, which opens onto a little patio, also holds a vintage stove, fancy counters, and a deep farmhouse sink. In addition to plenty of space, the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house has another bonus in the backyard: a legal rental cottage that has its own meter and everything. The Walt Disney Archives Brings Walt’s Office Back to the Disney Studios Lot

I think I would like to see this.

Today Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger presided over a special ceremony to dedicate the newly restored office of Walt Disney in the Animation Building at the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank. Disney Parks guests have been able to see selections from Walt’s office suite over the years at One Man’s Dream at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and inside the Main Street Opera House at Disneyland park, but the Walt Disney Archives painstakingly restored the suite—down to the smallest details—including original furnishings, his piano (frequently played back in the day by Disney Legend Richard Sherman), awards, and some items from his collection of miniatures.

Park fans will love the large map, hanging over the couch in his working office, of Disneyland as it existed in 1966, including recent additions to the park as well as those yet-to-be-constructed including Haunted Mansion and New Orleans Square. There’s one of the first master plans for what would become Walt Disney World Resort—including his vision for EPCOT. The office also features a golden cage containing a brightly colored tiny, singing robotic bird, which served as inspiration for the Audio-Animatronics we know today.

Redondo Beach Hires Owl and Falcon Toughs to Menace Sea Gulls On Its Waterfront

by Bianca Barragan
Kristen

Business owners and officials think the sea gulls and pigeons in the Redondo Beach waterfront area are pests—food thieves, who "carry or transmit bacteria" and poop everywhere. So earlier this week, the city did something about it, inking a contract with On the Wings Falconry Services to have owls and falcons make flights along the beach area and intimidate the unwanted birds, says the Daily Breeze. "All I have to do is walk on the beach with him, and sea gulls see them and they'll go berserk," says one of the falconers, motioning to the live Eurasian eagle-owl on her arm at a Redondo Beach City Council meeting this week.

And it's really just scaring they're hoping to do: "to avoid any incidental viewings of mother nature at work," all the falconer's birds will be "well-fed" before they go on patrol. (Because maybe the only thing less fun than getting pooped on by a sea gull at the beach is watching a sea gull be killed and consumed by an owl.)

The birds of prey will be flying over their new turf pretty regularly—the falconry service and Redondo Beach have a contract that states that the raptors will fly the designated area four times a week. Later, that will be reduced to maybe just two days a week. The whole intimidation process should take two months, and is expected to cost $70,000. Falconers have successfully helped keep bird pests away from the Palos Verdes Peninsula's high-end Terranea Resort and spots on Catalina Island.

last year bill asked the people constructing this if he could have some gingerbread and they thought he was joking and laughed.

Have you seen the “Grand” New Gingerbread House in the lobby of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at the Disneyland Resort? Standing at over 7 ½ feet tall and 12 feet wide, this creation took a team of 25 talented artists, engineers and bakers more than 1,400 hours to create.

What goes into a gingerbread house of this scale?

  • More than 600 lbs. of gingerbread
  • 100 gallons of frosting
  • 2 gallons of egg whites
  • 1 quart of lemon juice
  • 150 lbs. of sugar
  • 100 lbs. of isomalt sugar
  • 75 lbs. of powdered sugar

If the aroma of gingerbread makes you hungry, gingerbread and snowman shortbread cookies are available for sale. Or bring home a piece of the magic with the Mickey Elf Mug filled with cookies or traditional German stollen bread served in a Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa exclusive souvenir box. Hot chocolate, hot cider and pumpkin hot chocolate are also available (adults can add rum to any of these).

10 Stylish Pairs of Sweatpants You Can Wear to Thanksgiving Dinner — Treat Yourself Right

Wearing pantyhose and a nice dress for Thanksgiving dinner never made sense to me; that extra slice of pie or helping of turkey just doesn't fit in with that kind of wardrobe decision. Even that oversized sweater can't hide the fact that I've unbuttoned my pants midway through the meal. The whole situation is just uncomfortable, and I'm not going to put up with it any longer.

This year I'm going to wear something a little more practical. Let's find something extra comfy that allows your stomach to expand during dinner, but also has the option of being dressed up if you so choose. It's time to go sweatpants shopping.

21 Recipes That Will Put Your Thanksgiving Leftovers to Good Use

by Laura Beam
Kristen

I want to eat that deep dish pot pie.

There’s only one thing better than a Thanksgiving feast: the leftovers. We all look forward to foraging through the fridge (sometimes in the middle of the night) for an extra serving of turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing after the holiday. Eating pumpkin pie for breakfast is encouraged. Basically, anything goes.

But while Thanksgiving leftovers are brilliant all on their own, it’s even more fun to repurpose leftovers into something entirely new that will last you the whole week long. Make use of everything—the caramelized brown bits at the bottom of your stuffing dish, those gorgeous roasted vegetables, and the remains of the turkey. No matter what you have lying around, we have recipes to make Thanksgiving last as long as you want.

Watch the World's First Taco Bell Travel Through the Streets to Taco Bell HQ

by Adrian Glick Kudler
Kristen

Soon we will be able to visit the restored first taco bell. perhaps the location of a future DoLoThroDo?

tacobelltop.jpg

Los Angeles's signature event of the early Twenty-First Century is the Massive Move: impromptu traveling block parties that follow some enormous and interesting object or another (a space shuttle, a boulder, tons of people in the case of CicLAvia) through the streets in a glorious inversion of Los Angeles's signature event of the Twentieth Century: the traffic jam. An old Taco Bell is not quite a space shuttle, but early fast food restaurants are part of LA culture too—last night, the company moved the first-ever Taco Bell building from its location in Downey to its headquarters in Irvine.

Glen Bell (a white dude) opened his tiny little taco shop on Firestone Boulevard in 1962. By 1986, the chain had spread far and wide and the original location was sold to more small-time taco concerns (there is now a new Taco Bell across the street). It was shuttered for good last December and, with the property owners hoping to clear the lot, preservationists/fast food geeks rallied to save the historic Taco Bell. The historic Taco Bell.

The corporation itself had the resources and the will, so last night the 400-square-foot building traveled 45 miles down to Orange County, sometimes topping 20 mph and clearing the whole journey in just a little over three hours. The Orange County Register reports it headed out just after 10 pm, accompanied by cries of "Viva Mexico!", which shows a fundamental misunderstanding of Taco Bell, and arrived right around 1:30 am with a very small crowd of supporters.

Taco Bell will store the old building for now and let "fans" decide if it'll become a museum or return as a restaurant.

Meanwhile, enjoy the journey via video and the move's webcam:

Taco Bell, now a massive international corporation, hasn't forgotten where it came from: a humble taco shack in Downey. So when that taco hut was in danger of being razed and lost forever earlier this year, Taco Bell stepped in to make sure that the "Numero Uno" location, as they're calling it, doesn't bite the dust, reports Los Angeles magazine. The property owners want the taco shack gone and the lot empty by December 1, so this Thursday night at 10:30 pm, the first Taco Bell will be moved 45 miles from Downey to Taco Bell's HQ in Irvine.

The original Taco Bell was built on Firestone Boulevard in 1962, by Taco Bell founder Glen Bell, who's credited with popularizing a particular brand of inauthentic but nonetheless delicious Mexican fast food that today is found all over. Taco Bell operated at the site until 1986, when it was shuttered by the company; the 20-by-20-foot building housed an independent taco restaurant after thaty, according to Eater LA. Earlier this year, the Downey Conservancy sounded the alarm that the structure might be in danger—a fence had been put up around the perimeter and the Conservancy named the building "endangered."

"When we heard about the chance of it being demolished, we had to step in," Taco Bell's CEO told Los Angeles magazine. "We owe that to our fans. We owe that to Glen Bell." Taco Bell has yet to figure out what to do with its pioneering store and will keep it in storage until a decision's made, says the the OC Register.

But taco enthusiasts can definitely get a good look at the place as it makes its trip: Taco Bell's lined up "designated restaurants along the route" as spots where people can come to watch the historic eatery make the trip. (Can't make it out? There's a webcam set up to livestream the whole thing, too.) The building's already on supports and ready to hit the road on Thursday.
