Blacksmith Man at Arms tackles Sephiroth's Sword

by Colin Campbell
John Drury

MAN AT ARMS! MAN AT ARMS! MAN AT ARMS! MAN AT ARMS! MAN AT ARMS!

Tony Swatton, YouTube blacksmither of fantasy arms, has turned his skills to one of the most iconic of video game weapons; Sephiroth's Sword from Final Fantasy 7.

In the new episode of Man at Arms, Swatton shows how he created a replica of the unfeasibly long Masamune. Working with an 84 inch blade, he spent an eight hour session at a grinder. "This is a big blade. Takes a lot of time to grind it," he explained. On the upside, he was able to make use of a highly specialized hammer, designed specifically for forging katanas. The sword handle was fashioned from an old chair leg, covered in stingray skin.

In the end, the Man at Arms team was able to compare Sephiroth's Sword with earlier Final Fantasy creation, the Buster Blade, and,...

Outlast coming to PS4 for free in February

by Jenna Pitcher

Neat! I was just playing Don't Starve PS4 last night, which was also free on release for PS Plus.

PlayStation Plus members can download a copy of survival horror game Outlast for free in February, developer Red Barrels Games announced today, stating that the offer is only applicable to the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

Originally released on Sept. 4 for Windows PC, the title is slated to launch Feb. 5 on the PS4. The new playable character is the anonymous tipster who was the catalyst for the main game's events.

To learn more about the horror title, be sure to read our review and our interview with Red Barrels' co-founder Philippe Morin who discusses that the "core gameplay...

Xbox One Twitch streaming still 'a few more months' away

by Megan Farokhmanesh

"Launch Window" feature. lol. I wonder if I can return my xbox one. I used the the day after I bought it and never again.

The Xbox One's Twitch-based streaming capabilities, also known as Direct Broadcasting, will likely take "a few more months," according to a tweet from Twitch's official account.

Xbox One Direct Broadcasting: There is no ETA at this time from Microsoft. Expect a few more months. If we know sooner, we'll update.

— Twitch Support (@TwitchTVSupport) January 8, 2014A Microsoft representative responded to Polygon with the following:

Twitch integration was announced at Microsoft's press conference during E3 2013. The service will be exclusive to Xbox Live Gold subscribers and will allow users to upload gameplay directly to Twitch, broadcast and watch other streams.

Just before the console's release, Microsoft announced that its goal...

Internet-Connected Smart Baby Onesie Won’t Change Diapers But It Still Sounds Interesting

by Mary Beth Quirk
John Drury

Matt, you are at CES, did you see this?

Boss Meg witnessed the onesie in the wilds of CES.

Boss Meg witnessed the onesie in the wilds of CES.

While some of our Consumerist colleagues are out in the Wild West tackling the Consumer Electronics Show, we here at HQ are getting some exciting dispatches about and photos of what’s going on. No flying cars or maids named Rosie to speak of (yet) but it sounds like everyone is into baby stuff this year. Specifically, a smart onesie.

Now even though it would be super useful to have an article of clothing that acts kind of like one of those automatic litter boxes — you know, it could use its special computerness to sense when a diaper needs changing and then do the dirty work for you — it seems the onesie from Intel is a bit simpler.

As our pals at Engadget explain, the Internet-connected onesie made by Rest Devices and Intel doesn’t set up your child’s first Facebook account or fill Amazon orders when you’re low on wipes, but instead acts mostly like a baby monitor would.

The two green stripes you can see on the photo of the toy baby above are respiratory sensors. That green knob thing? It’s a removable sensor that monitors a baby’s body position, activity level and skin temperature.

It all connects to an app on parents’ phones where you can keep an eye on what you’re baby is doing. So, like a baby monitor. But it’s a onesie and uses the Internet! Fascinating. Now get to work on my automatic diaper changing idea, electronics people.

28-Inch '4K' Display from Dell Priced at $699, Launches January 23

by Eric Slivka
John Drury

dat price point

Last month, Dell announced several new "4K" displays for its lineup, including a teaser for an upcoming 28-inch model to be priced at "under $1000". While the pricing range was considered a breakthrough at the time, several other display manufacturers announced their own offerings at CES this week with pricing in the $800 range.

dell_p2815q
But as highlighted by Forbes, Dell has now revealed that its display will be launching on January 23 with an even lower price of $699.
The P2815Q will have a full 3840 x 2160 4K resolution and launch globally on January 23. Dell hasn’t yet discussed things like refresh rate or range of inputs (I’m sure DisplayPort is a given), but they do promise the same “screen performance” as the new UltraSharp 32 and UltraSharp 24 Ultra HD monitors. That’s certainly encouraging since their UltraSharp line is normally a cut above when it comes to professional displays.

The monitor will even include the ability to pivot to portrait mode as well as a range of adjustable viewing heights and angles. They’ll be selling accessories too, like a stereo sound bar and monitor arm.
Plunging prices for 4K/Ultra HD displays come just as Apple has launched its new Mac Pro, with its dual graphics cards capable of supporting up to three such displays simultaneously. The latest version of Apple's Retina MacBook Pro is also capable of driving a 4K display, taking advantage of the new Thunderbolt 2 standard to handle the throughput.

Many had hoped that Apple would release its own 4K/Ultra HD display alongside the Mac Pro, but the company did not do so, instead offering Mac Pro and MacBook Pro customers the option of adding on a $3600 32-inch Sharp Ultra HD display.

Still won't HD FF7.

Development on Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 HD Remaster was outsourced to China-based art production company Virtuos, according to a post on the studio's website.

The page notes that Virtuos developed both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of the title. The post also calls the completion of Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD "a new milestone for Virtuos which completes its biggest project to date."

Virtuos has a long history of producing art assets for major film and video game releases, including Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, NBA 2K13 and the Windows PC version of Might and Magic Heroes 6. The company also provides porting service for many handheld and mobile titles, such as the iOS version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, in addition to art...

OS X Console Emulator 'OpenEmu 1.0' Launches

by Juli Clover
John Drury

Been compiling this myself for about a year, this is easily the best emulation software I have ever used. Any mac folks out there should pick this shit up ASAP.

OpenEmu 1.0, an open source project designed to bring game emulation to OS X, has officially launched following a lengthy beta testing period. Though there are other emulator options for OS X, OpenEmu has been designed from the ground up for OS X.

openemu
For the first time, the ‘It just works’ philosophy now extends to open source video game emulation on the Mac. With OpenEmu, it is extremely easy to add, browse, organize and with a compatible gamepad, play those favorite games (ROMs) you already own.
OpenEmu is able to emulate the hardware of several different consoles, including several 16-bit systems like the Game Boy, GameBoy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Gear, NeoGeo Pocket, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, and Super Nintendo, among others.

The emulator features a native OS X interface with a design that mirrors iTunes, offering up ROMs in a unified card-style menu organized by system. OpenEmu includes full save state support, allowing multiple ROMs to be played at once, and it also provides OpenGL scaling, multithreaded playback, and gamepad support.

Multiple controllers are supported, including console controllers from Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation, along with gamepads from Gravis, Logitech, and more.

OpenEmu can currently be downloaded from the OpenEmu website for free. [Direct Download Link] [Experimental Download, Extra Beta Consoles]

Killer Instinct tournament derailed by Xbox One DRM check

by Alexa Ray Corriea

XBone sucks, etc etc etc

Xbox One's DRM check feature derailed a recent Killer Instinct tournament when it booted competitors out of the game to check the title's ownership, as shown in the video posted above.

The video, captured and posted by Team Spooky After Hours, shows gamers at Queens College in New York battling it out in the Defend the School Tournament. The tournament included qualifying rounds for New York City-based professional eSports event, the Defend the North fighting game tournament.

At the 6:34 mark things go south. To the announcer's cries of "Xbone, no!" the console boots players back to the main menu and the "Do you own this game or app?" message pops up.

Diary: Rock And Roll With The Gorons Of Hyrule: Total War

by Christopher Livingston

Are you rocks ready to rock?

Here’s the premise of the Hyrule: Total War mod for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms. Link, the hero of Hyrule, has tooted some somber notes on his Ocarina and vanished into the past, presumably on a mission to assassinate Navi’s grandfather. The rest of Hyrule, comprised of 20 different factions, is competing to fill the Link-shaped void. The result is like something out of fevered fanfic, where the Deku can battle Darknuts, where the Ghoma can invade the Gerudo, and where someone with a long-standing Zelda-based grudge can finally settle the score.

When Dota 2's beta came to a close in July, Valve started admitting new players in waves as it scaled hardware to meet demand.

Players can now download and play the game on Linux, Mac and Windows PC.

Dota 2 has 6.5 million active users per month, Valve says, an audience that's sure to grow now that playing restrictions have been lifted.

Chocolate Toast Crunch Cereal Is A Thing

by Laura Northrup

OH SHIT SON

11360547556_55712872d5I didn’t know that “chocolate toast” was even a thing, but evidently I was wrong. Now there’s a chocolate variation of Cinnamon Toast Crunch…and everyone knows that if there’s a cereal of something, it must be real.

“I would eat that,” declared an unnamed Consumerist staffer whose name rhymes with Fairy Death Smirk. Indeed, most people would eat that, since we were all six years old once.

Maybe this means that Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs, the fictional cereal featured in the comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes,” is even closer to becoming reality.
