General Architecture: Sauna

Sauna by General Architecture
This private sauna designed by studio General Architecture is located in Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. Scandinavian minimalistic approach and natural wooden structure make this small building a little piece of perfection. Clean and beautifully simple interior works with barn-like facade. The building looks amazingly natural with the woods in the background - as if it was just the part of the landscape.
"The small building is built as a uniform volume, clad in larch wood. When not in use the house is completely closed, giving it an appearance of the archetypal house. When open, the warm un-weathered finish of the larch gives the sauna a friendly and welcoming character."

Lu Xinjian Creates A Neon Aerial Map Of Shanghai Using Google Earth
Chinese artist Lu Xinjian has been inspired by maps and cities for years, often collected in his increasingly large-scale acrylic on canvas series City DNA. But his newest work City Light expands on these inspirations, taking the flat abstractions and mounting them onto the wall with neon.
Using Google Earth images of the artist’s current home, the sprawling metropolis of Shanghai, Xinjian renders the map loosely in his abstract style. The resulting plans are rendered in neon on a solid black background, and run on a flash program which controls the timing of each area’s lines being illuminated. Starting with a small, centrally-located blue square, the rest of the surrounding area follows, until the entire piece is lit. Representing the rapid growth of the modern metropolis, the network of neon light tubes takes the language of city communication and visually abstracts the idea of rapid expansion. penda: Hongkun Fine Art Gallery

Hongkun Fine Art Gallery by penda
Architecture studio penda was established in 2013 by Chris Precht and Dayong Sun. In their studios located in Vienna and Beijing. The core of their designs is a unique approach and custom-made outcome. As they say: "we see architecture as a statement that always starts with questions about the content and the context, about identity, density and the community of a specific site". Newly opened art gallery in Beijing is a perfection of organic shapes and curvy lines, while maintaining minimal aesthetics on a stunning 1400sqm and two floors.
"Located on the eastern 3rd ring road in Beijing, the white exterior of the Hongkun Art Gallery works a sculptural focal point for the area. Entering the gallery through an opening in the monolithic facade, the arch-like curves continue to the interior and gently merge into a clean white space for exhibiting the artworks. The open areas in the gallery offer a wide space for themed exhibition, while the gently curved entrance part draws people into the space and guides them naturally further into the gallery. The arc itself is a shape which origins from a cave. The cave is the birth - place for art and architecture. And it has been used for thousands of years as a transmitter for art and history. Therefore we tried to find a new connection from the tradition to a modern way to exhibition art. The solid expression of the exterior continually merges with a carved out interior and increases the sculptural appearance of the gallery. Multiple arches altering in size and orientation create a continuous, gentle curve which becomes a sculptural interpretation of the landscape paintings, that are exhibited in the gallery. Within the arches, the entrance sculpture inhabits an information desk, a coatroom and the main circulation staircase, which guides visitors to the basement with a special exhibition hall and employees to the office area located on the mezzanine level."

Erwan Fichou: Miradors

Miradors by Erwan Fichou
It all started with a vision. A man was standing on the top of the tree shaped like an UFO, in Mexico city. Three years later, during the residence, photographer Erwan Frichou decided to turn this memory into an art project called "Miradors". Erwan worked with gardeners to create interesting shapes and invited people in the street to climb those peculiar topiary trees.
"What's interesting about pictures isn't their function, to represent reality, but their dynamic potential, their ability to spark and build projections, interactions, narrative frameworksmechanisms that structure reality[…]an image is the result of movements that are temporarily sedimentary or crystallized in it[…] Beyond metaphors, we must understand that, paradoxically, our contemporary sensitivity predisposes us to prophecy, not history. We live in a world of images that precede reality; we're not looking to see, unless it's déjà-vu. (...) Not a documentary essay, not a conceptual serie, just a way of thinking and asembling some elements I like to consider as artistic material or forms, in order to create what I hope to be a frame where people can project...or imagine...or interact..."

Nelson Mandela Commemorative Statue Has A Tiny Rabbit In Its Ear

It has been discovered that the sculptors of the 30ft commemorative Nelson Mandela statue in Pretoria, South Africa, hid a tiny bronze rabbit in the ear. Apparently the sculptors decided to insert the rabbit as a trademark signature, as they were not allowed to engrave their signatures on the work in a traditional manner. It also represents the speed at which the sculpture had to be created as "rabbit" in the Afrikaans language is "haas", which also means haste.
