3D Printed Hermit Crab Shell | Aki Inomata
The Japanese artist Aki Inomata imagined shells for hermit crabs based on french architecture 3D-printed. An interesting and visually very successful process, inspired by the many trips of the artist between the two countries to discover images and an explanatory video after the jump.

Do Not Open – A lettering project by Erik Marinovich

When I visited San Francisco last summer Kyle and I were able a good chunk of the day with Erik Marinovich, one of the best dudes/letterers I know. While we were chilling at his studio he was telling me about this project called Do Not Open where he mails hand-painted envelopes to folks around the world.
Do Not Open brings something that was specifically available to friends and family to the general public. You can submit an address (yours or a friends) and for a fee, a uniquely hand-lettered envelope will be carefully packaged and mailed to you. Envelope dimensions are 15″x20″and no two addresses will look the same. All envelopes are one of a kind that include a hand painted address on #7 kraft bubble mailers (14 1/4″ x 19″) from Office Depot. The series will be limited to only 250 envelopes. Note International orders welcomed!
Erik told me that he should have some more updates to the site early next week, so be sure to keep scoping out his awesome work. Also, mail is clearly becoming the cool new medium. You may have seen Roxy Torres’ hand-lettered envelopes which we posted about last week, which gives this trend even more of a leg to stand on. Anyone else going to utilize this medium for their own project?

From New York to Rio: Expo 1
After iGNANT was invited to the opening of Expo 1: New York at MoMA PS1 and The Museum of Modern Art last year in May, we were lucky enough to be part of the presentation of its latest version, the Expo 1 in Rio de Janeiro.
The project was developed by Klaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist in partnership with Volkswagen in order to establish a public discourse around the ecological challenges that go along with our economical and sociopolitical instability of the 21st century. Especially recent events of global climate change and the experience of the Hurricane Sandy gave impetus to create this creative dialogue and translate contemporary art practice into social practice.
The about 70% of the New York exhibits are enriched by some Brazilian artists, which thereby put the focus more on the current areas of conflict of their country. Especially in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as the host for this year’s World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016, the enormous ecological, economic and infrastructural changes cause friction in society.
Controls by the police and politics, resettlement plans in favor of attractive cityscape stress the tensions even more and often vent into mass demonstrations. It is these parade-like citizen’s initiatives as a recurring motif coupled with the deconstruction of the common gaze on social reality that these artists are concerned with.
In addition to historical works such as Joseph Beuys’ “Sweeping” after the May 1 demonstrations in 1972 on the Karl-Marx-Platz or Chris Burden’s installation, in which he makes the unsinkable Titanic praise to the indestructible Eiffel Tower, works such as Halil Altindere’s Rap video, add a current reference to the riots in Istanbul. Brazilian artist Cinthia Marcelle displayed a bulldozer digging its own hole in the jungle as a loop.

ANITA SCHARTZ GALERIA DE ARTE

On the day of our arrival in Rio de Janeiro, Rio Art Tours took us on a little Gallery and City tour.
‘Anita Schwartz Galeria de Arte’ has been actively part of the local art scene for over 25 years now, mainly focusing on Brazilian art and spreading over 700 m². The minimalistic and clear-cut three stories lead to a wide terrace on the second floor, where a container was placed, destined to host video-installations with capacity for 20 spectators.

MUSEU DE ARTE CONTEMPORANEA DE NITERÓI

One of the most spectacular places during this trip (unfortunately only from the outside) has definitely been the beautiful, very photogenic Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói built by Oscar Niemeyer. It’s shape has been designed to fit exactly to the Sugarloaf.

Film: Guinness film follows inspiring group of African dandies, The Sapeurs
Here in London, the end of the London Collections: Men means the end of revelling in sartorial male brilliance right? Wrong! Guinness has created a superb short film which features the Sapeurs, a group of people from the Republic of the Congo who embrace stylistic individualism in a truly inspiring way. It’s part of the Guinness Made Of More campaign, which celebrates those who live their lives with real integrity and character.

Video: King Krule - A Lizard State
Starting out with an intro from Alfred Hitchcock, British musician King Krule's video for "A Lizard State" moves into a black-and-white optical illusion, showing Krule (aka. Archy Marshall) giving a rendition of the song while standing horizontally off the wall.
There's also a young woman, who peeps in on Marshall while a iguana crawls over his oversize-suited shoulder. The video was directed by Jamie-James Medina, who has worked with Krule in the past, as well as Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx. Watch above!
Stichting Antheil
Here is a crazy idea for the identity of Stichting Antheil a museum dedicated to the musical genius George Antheil. He was well-know for having distorted the way to make music, so the student Jelle Zweegers has disassembled then reassembled a scanner to created a distorted logo.
The scanner is the identity of Stichting Antheil, the printed corporate identity has to be scanned by an employee everytime a letter leaves the building. This way a dynamic identity is created by the foundation employees itself.

A Reflective Palace of Rainbows by Kimsooja

Created in 2006 by multidisciplinary artist Kimsooja, To Breathe – A Mirror Woman was an elaborate installation at the Palacio de Cristal, Parque del Retiro, in Madrid. Originally built in the late 1880s to house a collection of flora and fauna from the Philippines, Kimsooja transformed the Palacio de Cristal into a multisensory sound and light experience. A special translucent diffraction film was used to cover the windows to create an array of naturally occurring rainbows which were in turn reflected by a mirrored surface that covered the entire floor. Additionally, an audio recording of the artist breathing was played throughout the space to further enhance the experience. The installation was on view through the end of the summer and you can read much more about it here.
Kimsooja most recently wrapped the Korean Pavilion with a similar film treatment at the 2013 Venice Art Biennale. (via My Amp Goes to 11)
