Joël Tettamanti: Kobo

by Thisispaper Magazine
Kobo by Joël Tettamanti Joël Tettamanti is a photographer and graphic designer based in Switzerland. He travels to remote places around the world for his photographic stories and captures what he sees - ordinary objects, landscapes and buildings that others would pass without noticing. We are absolutely fascinated with his portraits of the people growing in the particular environment he visists. The focus of his work is the human presence in the landscape and the people who are uplifted and sometimes defeated by the land they inhabit. "Lesotho is a kingdom in the Maloti mountains. It has always been independent from South Africa. The Basotho have always rejected the others from invading them because they are in the mountains. The KOBO (blanket) is a very interesting piece of fabric. It has replaced the original skins that the inhabitants of that region were wearing before the colonies arrived. They exchanged skins and furs with fabrics. There is a lot to read in books, but I was attracted by the idea, that a very european product has replaced the original traditional outfits. I grew up in Lesotho as a child. My parents where working and living there for some years. I am very linked to that place even though that it has changed so much...” Words: Joël Tettamanti, Thisispaper Photography: Joël Tettamanti

Island Resindece by Peter Rose + Partners

by Caroline Kurze

Peter Rose + Partners finished the Island Residence nestled in the richly wooded grounds on the island of Chappaquiddick near Edgartown, Massachusetts. The house is part of a collection of environment‐ and landscape‐centric interventions that blur the boundaries between structures and landscape, and between inside and outside.

The house is low to the ground, clad in sealed, unpainted wood to naturally weather to recede over time into the surrounding landscape. Where the façade lacks wood, it contains large glass windows that can be opened completely, leaving nothing but the view and the ocean breezes. The residence’s southern exposure floods the interior with natural light, maximizing solar heat gain and minimizing electrical consumption, while green roofs – covered in natural sea grasses – provide greater thermal performance and roof insulation, improve air quality and biodiversity, manage rainwater, and reduce noise.

The 2014 Annual iPhone Photography Award Winners

by Staff

While other smartphones impress customers with their camera's megapixel specs or larger sensors, the Apple iPhone is arguably still the photographer's smartphone of choice due to its reliable image processing, fast performance, and the huge range of third-party editing apps. Demonstrating the iPhone camera's capabilities (when in the right hands) is the iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS), the 2014 winners of which have just been announced.

Fab artwork by ace Christoph Niemann I love this cover concept by using two covers after each other (page 1 and page 3). Zeit Magazin carries this concept each week and this creates an excellent opportunity to give more depth to their coverstories. Here this weeks cover Zeit magazine from Germany. Video: Rejjie Snow - Nights Over Georgia

by Joe Reeve

Rising Irish rapper Rejjie Snow has just put out a new video for his track “Nights Over Georgia”. The single may or may not be on his forthcoming debut album, which is yet to have an official release date but is expected sometime later this year. Rejjie has built up a huge following since the release of his Rejovich EP from last year (which beat Kanye West and J. Cole to the top of iTunes hip-hop chart). Another rising rapper who we’ve featured before, Loyle Carner, guested on one of it's standouts “1992”

Until there’s more info on the debut album everyones waiting for, you can watch the great new video above, directed by Noah Lee.

Photography: Francois Prost’s amazing pictures of rural French night clubs

by Madeleine Morley

List

Francois Prost takes pictures of french night clubs, the kind of clubs that you end up in on holiday after a day at the beach, still wearing your flip flops and carrying a cool bag full of empty Sangria cartons and sand. Francois’s discotheques are the kind of places where your drink is a neon green colour and you have no idea why, and for the first time ever everyone inexplicably seems a lot younger than you, and there are lots of paper maché sphinxes and red plastic palm trees dotted about.
