Winter Olympics wipeout GIFs

by Dean Putney

The Winter Olympics offer us a great lesson in GIFs--specifically, the power of a well-made GIF to condense much longer-form content into its highest-impact few seconds. Where you've got weeks of serious content and coverage, the GIF has to focus on what brings you the most oomph. Wipeouts.

4chan's worksafe GIF section has been collecting the best of the wipeouts from the 2014 Winter Olympics for the last week. It's an impressive thread. Not only is it emotionally wrenching to see these athletes try so hard and fail, but the wipeouts highlight the magnitude of what they're trying to do. One big crash puts all the perfect runs and tenths-of-a-second into perspective. Here are some of my favorites.

Great 8-bit gamer tees

by Cory Doctorow

8-Bitty does some extremely great pixel-art tees inspired by classic video-games. I like the two-sided, full-shirt screens the best, like the mummy wrappings and the skeleton (this one reminds me of the classic Skeletees and makes me wish it was as detailed as Leslie Arwin's original).

Report: Comcast to acquire Time Warner Cable for $44 billion in $159 a share, all-stock deal

by Xeni Jardin
Paul Brownlee

Are you fucking kidding me?

REUTERS/Mike Blake. A Time Warner Cable office is pictured in San Diego, California.

Comcast plans to acquire Time Warner Cable for about $159 a share in an all-stock deal that will combine America's two largest cable companies, reports CNBC. The newly merged company will be called "why is my internet so slow." And Net Neutrality is about to become all the more important.

Comcast to buy Time Warner Cable in all stock deal worth $159 per $TWC share- sources. Deal set for tomorrow morning. Ratio is 2.875 $CMCSA.

Comcast will indicate willingness to divest 3m subs from combination with $TWC- sources.

— DAVID FABER (@davidfaber) February 13, 2014

Snip from CNBC story, the first to break the news:

The new company, created by the $44 billion purchase, would be by far the largest cable provider in the nation with over 33 million subscribers, and is certain to face a tough review from the Federal Communications Commission.

The agreement comes more than eight months after Charter Communictions and Liberty Media made their first foray to try and negotiate a deal to acquire Time Warner Cable (a story broken by CNBC) and follows months of conversations between Time Warner Cable and Comcast about the prospect of a Comcast acquisition of the company.

Charter's offer of roughly $133 a share in cash and stock has been rejected by Time Warner Cable as it held out for a price of $160, which it has said it reflective of where an asset of its size and scope should trade in a deal.

Brace yourselves, internet.

BREAKING: Comcast and Time Warner merging to create bigger, shittier monopoly.

Comcast and TWC aren’t competitors. It’s not good to consolidate ownership, but it doesn’t reduce choice. They were already cartel partners.

The Essentials of My Childhood

by Steve Napierski
Paul Brownlee

Art is cool but fuck math from calculus onward.

The Essentials of My Childhood While I enjoy this animated GIF, I cannot fake solidarity with results of playing video games. In fact, I was probably left alone to play video games as much as I was because my grades were never an issue. AND especially not with math. Math is friggin' awesome!

My two strongest subjects have always been art and math. And while these two couldn't be any more different, they do add necessary balance to my mind. Art is completely subjective. Someone can shove a cross in a jar of urine and call it art. In the end, it's all up to the individual. Math, on the other hand, is always consistent. 2 + 2 will always equal 4. Every time!

Everything else in school were simply too many shades of gray for me to enjoy, but the rules of math and art have always been black and white.

MonkeyPaw Games Retro Rush Week 5: Wolf Fang

by Ryan Olsen
Paul Brownlee

Oh nice. This game is pretty rad. Great music too.

With a new week comes a new title from the MonkeyPaw Games Retro Rush event. Week 5 brings Wolf Fang — an action shoot-’em-up centered around customizable robots — to PlayStation Store.

Retro Rush Week 5: Wolf Fang

Wolf Fang was originally released in arcades in Japan in the early 1990s, and made its way to PlayStation a few years later. The story is set in the future: an evil military faction looks to control all the mechs in the world, and the last places on Earth they haven’t conquered are Australia and New Zealand (It’s always nice to know which areas on future Earth will be the last bastions of freedom, isn’t it?). To stop the bad guys from total domination, you pilot your own customized mech to save Oceania.

The customization process allows you to swap out a special weapon, main weapon and legs to fit your personal play style. If you lose all your lives, you can try a different set of parts or keep rocking the same mech. The choice is always yours, which is good because Wolf Fang’s difficulty has a… wait for it… bite to it (sorry, I’ve been saving that pun for a long time). Overall, there are 12 pieces to choose from so you can play around with the parts to find the sweet spot between speed and power.

If that level of customization isn’t enough, Wolf Fang’s features branching missions and multiple endings, so you’ll want to gear up for multiple playthroughs to make sure you don’t miss any of the action.

So, when can you get the game? You’ll be able to pick up Wolf Fang from PlayStation Store for your PS3, PS Vita and PSP starting February 11th.

That does it for the Week 5 game of the Retro Rush from MonkeyPaw Games. That means we are now down to the last title, and it’s sure turn a lot of hair pink. Yes, Tomba! 2 is the final entry into the Retro Rush! See you next week!

New Velocity 2X Trailer and Update: So Far, So Good!

by James Marsden
Paul Brownlee

Yes. This is cool.

Hi folks. Today I’m here to reveal a brand new video showing alpha footage of Velocity 2X; to talk through some of the things we’ve been working towards; and to outline what we’re going to be adding next!

First, the video:

It’s starting to look the part, but there’s still a lot to do. The major thing left to do is improve the animation on the player character Lt. Kai Tana. We’re working on that right now.

The art style

One of the major influences for Velocity 2X was the art style of Flashback on the Amiga. For those of you too young to have played Flashback (poor you, play the original!), it was a stunning visual achievement, using rotoscoped animation and a simple yet stylish art style to create a highly atmospheric experience. 12-year-old me fell in love with it.

Artistically speaking, we wanted Velocity 2X to be the spiritual successor to Flashback (and indeed Another World), and also to create a level of atmosphere and production value that is rarely seen in 2D games.

Art style mockup 1 of 2

Click here to see the full gallery

Despite being a small team of 10 (only three of which are artists), we set ourselves the ambitious challenge of reaching the kind of visual fidelity that makes people say “oooh” and “ahhh” and “take my money!”.

These are the benchmark images that we started with at the beginning of development. Chris (Goff) didn’t really know what was going to be possible visually, so he spent most of his time getting the art style in shape.

Art style mockup 2 of 2

Hussain (Sheikh) our technical director, who worked as visual effects lead on Split/Second, was confident he could bring his experience in creating high end effects to the PS Vita, so Chris (Goff) set about creating some benchmark images that we could aim towards.

Chris set the bar pretty high, but when Shahid Ahmad at SCEE asked if we could raise the bar higher for PS4, Chris created these images:

Benchmark for PS4 2 of 2

Benchmark for PS4 1 of 2

Most of the team got very excited about what we were aiming for on PS4, but Hussain shrugged and smiled a quiet smile to himself.

When we showed the game at Eurogamer Expo, it had none of the effects that Hussain had been working on, and the artists had yet to make use of the dynamic environment lights. We also didn’t have a PS4 build underway yet.

However, as time went on it became clear that the game was actually going to visually exceed our original benchmarks, and it was even starting to look as good as the PS4 benchmarks on PS Vita.

It was then that Hussain told me he knew all along we could achieve the PS4 benchmark on PS Vita, but didn’t want to make any promises in case something came up.

But we have achieved and surpassed what we hoped to achieve, and now have the following high-end effects in the game:

  • Particle explosions
  • Dynamic environment lighting
  • Vignetting
  • Environment effects such as leaves in the wind, twinkling stars etc
  • Bloom
  • Light refraction
  • Anamorphic lens flare
  • Colour correction
  • Smooth 3D camera zoom
  • Screen shake & camera turbulence

As I said, there’s still plenty left to do. The artists have only just begun dressing the levels with all the effects at their disposal, and the design team still has many levels to design. And of course the animation on Kai is getting another pass. Rest assured we’ll put every drop of energy we have into making this game a delight.

If you don’t have a PS Vita, we want Velocity 2X to help convince you to pick one up. Why? We absolutely love the system. Pure and simple, it’s the best handheld ever, and that’s something I hear people saying more and more as time goes on – because it’s simply true. The amount of ENLIGHTENING FUN you get from the wealth of great games on PS Vita – indie and otherwise – makes it the most worthwhile gaming investment you can make.

We’re supporting PS Vita with Velocity 2X, and we suggest you do likewise!

A Lore of Mega Man X

I would like to see them attempt to continue this for the sequels, when the story becomes a big clusterfuck.

Ah, Mega Man X... It's been years since I played you last. Definitely a situation I should remedy soon. Probably won't, but should. Damn, Mega Man X was a really good game.

I wonder if they're ever going to do the lore of Mega Man Zero. Now that's a series I really need to get up to speed on. Only ever played the original, but really enjoyed it.

The History of Role Playing Games

by Steve Napierski
Paul Brownlee

I like how they include both the eastern and western stuff, instead of treating them like two separate genres

The History of Role Playing Games Hands down, this is the largest infographic I have ever posted on Dueling Analogs. Having a mere width of only 700 pixels it boasts an astounding height of 15,050 pixels tall. In printing terms, that's pretty damn tall. In web terms, that's ridiculously tall.

When I first got this infographic, I thought it was just going to be a timeline for when major role-playing games where released (the first couple deceived me), but I was surprised by just how many titles were discussed based on their various degrees of importance to the genre. It's pretty damn informative and I hope you enjoy it, too.

Update: Just want to let you guys know, I love reading your comments whenever I post an infographic. It's the closest thing I do to trolling on this site.

Drakengard 3 Launching on May 20th for PS3, Collector’s Edition Revealed

by Sakura Minamida
Paul Brownlee

Damn. I may have to get it. Nier was a good weird game.

Let me start by thanking everyone for patiently waiting for news about Drakengard 3. We’ve been quiet for a long time, but today, we’re dropping some huge news — the silence is no more!

Let’s start big: we’ve got a release date. Drakengard 3 is coming out on May 20th, 2014, for $49.99 on PS3. Mark your calendars, and keep that pen out, because there are a couple more dates I’d like you to note.

If you pre-order Drakengard 3 before March 4th, or if you already have, you’ll be locked in for three bonus items — all at no extra charge. The first item is something I know those of you who appreciate an authentic gaming experience have asked for time and again, and your voices have been heard. You’ll be getting the Japanese Voice Over DLC pack.

Drakengard 3 for PS3Drakengard 3 for PS3

Drakengard 3 for PS3

As for the second and third items… they’re a secret! We’ll reveal the second item on March 4th, and the third item on April 9th. Basically, the earlier you pre-order, the more you get. If you wait past March 4th, you’ll only get two items. The Japanese VO DLC will have expired. If you wait past April 9th, you’ll only get one item.

Last but not least, retailing for $79.99 exclusively from the Square Enix Online Store, the Drakengard 3 Collector’s Edition was crafted with the fans who’ve loved Drakengard since the PS2 days. Of course, it’s also accessible to newcomers as well, with the original Japanese box art and that gorgeous, bloody flower on the case.

This version comes with some incredible stuff, including a complete prequel novella — a collection of short stories written from the perspectives of each character. It’s also got a selection of tracks by acclaimed composer Keiichi Okabe. We’ve mentioned he also composed Nier, haven’t we?

The Collector’s Edition also comes packed with more content and a few nods to series fans. It’s got a full DLC stage featuring Zero’s sister, One, as a playable character. And for the long-time fans, you can equip Zero in the Caim costume. Aesthetically, the costume is reminiscent of the original Drakengard, but functionally, it decreases stamina consumption when using a skill. Finally, the Giant Baby Hat is for your dragon, which needs no introduction to those of you who know this series.

Drakengard 3 for PS3

One very important fact I should mention about this version is that only 5,000 of these are going to be produced. We’re giving you the number upfront so that you know that when we say limited quantity, we mean limited. And rest assured, pre-ordering the Collector’s Edition also gets you all three pre-order bonus items, no matter when you order it.

I hope we’ve made up for that prolonged silence with all this news. If you have any questions, be sure to ask us in the comments!

Philip Seymour Hoffman, R.I.P.

by Mark Frauenfelder

I was saddened to find out that the great actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead this morning at the age of 46. His name on the bill of any movie was reason enough for me to watch, and I was never disappointed. I was looking forward to watching many more of his movies.

Price of Amazon Prime May Jump To $119 a Year

by timothy
colinneagle writes "Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak hinted during the company's earnings conference call [Thursday] that we might see an increase to the company's popular Amazon Prime service. As it stands now, Amazon Prime costs $79 per year and offers users free shipping on millions of items, free book borrowing for select Kindle titles, and last but not least, free streaming to the company's video on-demand service. Going forward, Amazon may increase that pricepoint to either $99 or $119. That's a rather significant price increase, but it's important to keep in mind that the price of Amazon Prime has remained the same ever since Amazon first started the program nine years ago." How many products do you use that haven't increased in price for that long?

TSA whistleblower describes life in the pornoscanner room

by Cory Doctorow
Paul Brownlee

Suprising? Not really.

In Jason Edward Harrington's Dear America, I Saw You Naked, he reveals that he was the anonymous TSA agent who wrote the Taking Sense Away tell-all/whistleblower blog. Harrington's piece is a shocking and eye-opening look into the world of TSA agents, especially the section dealing with the "IO room" where the nude photos of travellers who used the Rapiscan machines were displayed:

Most of my co-workers found humor in the I.O. room on a cruder level. Just as the long-suffering American public waiting on those security lines suspected, jokes about the passengers ran rampant among my TSA colleagues: Many of the images we gawked at were of overweight people, their every fold and dimple on full awful display. Piercings of every kind were visible. Women who’d had mastectomies were easy to discern—their chests showed up on our screens as dull, pixelated regions. Hernias appeared as bulging, blistery growths in the crotch area. Passengers were often caught off-guard by the X-Ray scan and so materialized on-screen in ridiculous, blurred poses—mouths agape, à la Edvard Munch. One of us in the I.O. room would occasionally identify a passenger as female, only to have the officers out on the checkpoint floor radio back that it was actually a man. All the old, crass stereotypes about race and genitalia size thrived on our secure government radio channels.

There were other types of bad behavior in the I.O. room—I personally witnessed quite a bit of fooling around, in every sense of the phrase. Officers who were dating often conspired to get assigned to the I.O. room at the same time, where they analyzed the nude images with one eye apiece, at best. Every now and then, a passenger would throw up two middle fingers during his or her scan, as though somehow aware of the transgressions going on.

But the only people who hated the body-scanners more than the public were TSA employees themselves. Many of my co-workers felt uncomfortable even standing next to the radiation-emitting machines we were forcing members of the public to stand inside. Several told me they submitted formal requests for dosimeters, to measure their exposure to radiation. The agency’s stance was that dosimeters were not necessary—the radiation doses from the machines were perfectly acceptable, they told us. We would just have to take their word for it. When concerned passengers—usually pregnant women—asked how much radiation the machines emitted and whether they were safe, we were instructed by our superiors to assure them everything was fine.

Guess I should try out Street Fighter X Tekken

Typically when you think of February, your mind goes to chocolates, flowers, and other lovey-dovey things. So we thought we’d celebrate this sappy month by scaring the bejesus out of you with Outlast on PS4.

We also have some great single-player PS3 experiences, including Metro: Last Light, a first-person shooter with an interesting take on morality, and Remember Me, a third-person action adventure where you’ll take down an evil corporation by beating lots of people up with your own unique combos and messing with people’s memories. If you have a significant other, you might be able to rope him or her into some bank-robbing action with Payday 2 on PS3. After all, everyone likes stealing stuff. I mean, uh… nevermind.

Finally, two PS Vita titles are joining the Instant Game Collection: Street Fighter X Tekken and ModNation Racers: Road Trip. Both include functionality with their respective PS3 versions. Fight against your friends in Street Fighter X Tekken no matter what platform they have, or download your previously made PS3 creations and use them in ModNation Racers: Road Trip.

Dark Souls II Hands-on: Die Harder

by Sid Shuman
Paul Brownlee

I hope dual swords is a viable strategy this time. I'm interested in trying to beat it that way.

Dark Souls II for PS3

Fear not! Based on my initial hands-on experiences, Dark Souls II is proving to be even more fiendishly challenging than its famously difficult predecessor. I learned this when the very first enemy in the game, a monstrous ogre-like creature sporting a pendulous gut, lifted me into the air and gnawed on my head like a Tootsie pop. I died kicking and screaming.

After reviving, I opted to steer clear of the brute until I’d found a better weapon. But misfortune struck moments later when I was overwhelmed by a swarm of tiny, mewling dog creatures. Pushing on, I faced a gauntlet of towering undead knights, each powerful enough to cleave me in two with a swing of a massive sword.

After dying repeatedly, I finally zig-zagged past them and through a nearby door. Big mistake: here, perched precariously on a narrow platform, I faced off with an armored, giant boss who swung a halberd with lethal accuracy. Yep, you better believe I died.

Dark Souls II for PS3Dark Souls II for PS3

Though Dark Souls II wastes no time in throwing the player into the deep end of the pool, its core gameplay has also undergone many subtle tweaks that further contribute to its bruising difficulty level. One example is your life bar, which shrinks slightly each time you die.

This means you’ll grow permanently weaker with each miscalculation unless you use one of your precious Human Effigies (standing in for Dark Soul’s Humanity) to restore your full human form. And the health-restoring Estus Flasks, so critical for survival in Dark Souls, so far appear to be downplayed in favor of life crystals, a slow-healing, consumable item that isn’t restored each time you rest at a Bonfire.

But I also noticed a host of welcome refinements that make Dark Souls II a more graceful and user-friendly experience. The user interface is now vastly easier to navigate, making weapon swapping and inventory management a speedy affair compared to Dark Soul’s overwhelming lines of text. Jumping, a famously finicky maneuver in Dark Souls, is now bound to L3 in a small but crucial tweak that will make battle-scarred veterans weep tears of joy. And perhaps best of all, you can now fast travel between different Bonfires from the very start of the game, cutting down on monotonous backtracking.

Dark Souls II for PS3

In the pre-release build I played, Dark Souls II trimmed its character class lineup from ten to eight. Gone are the fan-favorite Pyromancer, Thief, Hunter, and Wanderer classes, replaced by a more focused and specialized group of misfits. Beginners might want to try the new Explorer class, a middle-of-the-road character that begins the game with particularly good items and equipment. Advanced players can forego defense for sheer offense with the Swordsman, who favors fighting with a weapon in each hand.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the series’ uniquely haunting atmosphere. Dark Souls II’s stellar opening cinema is adorned with disturbing imagery: a dead tree swarming with bloated fireflies, a ruined kingdom of impossible age, and a cackling coven of mystics. You, as a Hollow, are cursed to feed on the souls of the living. But you knew that already, didn’t you?

Though my time with Dark Souls II was short, it’s haunted my dreams since. Have questions? I’ll do my best to answer them in the comments below!

Dark Age of JRPGs (8) - Do Dutch Wives Dream of Electric Eels? (オランダ妻は電気ウナギの夢を見るか?) - PC-88 / FM-7 (1984) (NSFW)

by Discoalucard
Paul Brownlee

So yeah....this is from Japan alright.

Most computer RPGs in the early days (and even in the modern era) are based around some fantasy or swords and sorcery universe. Yet that wasn't entirely the case - see Danchizuma no Yuuwaku, previously featured in this column. This game here, Oranda Tsuma wa Denki Unagi no Yume Wo Miru ka? (オランダ妻は電気ウナギの夢を見るか?), is the successor to that game, another entry in Koei's "Strawberry Porno Game Series". It was released in November 1984 and both developed and published by Koei.

The title of this game translates to "Do Dutch Wives Dream of Electric Eels?" Two things to note: "dutch wife" is the Japanese term for a sex doll, and the title is a reference to the Phillip K. Dick story "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", the basis for the movie Blade Runner.

The game is half RPG, half adventure game. The story is that some advanced sex dolls, code name North Pole #6, have become sentient and are masquerading around the city as real women. Your goal is to find them.  At least, that's inasmuch as any internet guide can figure out, which mostly consist of listing very vague memories from when the game was released.

What follows is NSFW.

The game begins with a dice roll to determine your stats: Strength, Agility, Intelligence, Physical Strength, and Vitality, as well as an indicator which determines how often enemies will appear.

The setting is Kabuki-cho, in Shinjuku, the major red light district in Tokyo. The area is divided into nine screens on a 3x3 grid. You begin in a different spot in the city every time you play, but the layout is the same. You can walk around with the numeric pad. Most actions are carried out by the function keys. You can press Enter to get a summary of what they all do. So let's do that.

So the options include Look, Talk, and...Rape? Yikes. Yes, this is that type of game. Since you're supposed to be finding a human-esque sex doll, one of the easiest ways to do this is by testing them first hand. You can do this to any of the female characters, which include schoolgirls and call girls. This will bring up "Fuck Mode".

Here, the function keys determine your actions - F1 is lick, F2 is massage, F3 is pinch, F4 is to use a toy (if you have one) and F5 is to move your hips. An indicator in the upper right corner indicates the sexual intensity of you and the women. If you perform poorly, you'll prematurely ejaculate, and the woman will get pissed off. This means she'll take some of your cash and then leave. It seems to imply that the "rape" option is really closer to "proposition", since all women in this game seem to be hookers, and are okay with anything you do as long as you can pay up. If not, you'll usually get attacked afterwards by someone else.

Of course, you can't just run around doing this willy nilly either. There are cops and yakuza around too, and they can and will engage you in combat. Here, again, the functions act as different attacks. I've never beaten anyone in combat, actually. Sometimes I end up facing the old guy cops, who seem to go down easily, but then more keep popping up and eventually wear me down.

You can also try to have sex with the male characters. On the map screen it'll just call you an idiot. Try it on one of the male sex shop workers though and they'll attack you.

Most of the stores in the city are either love hotels or sex toy shops. The game operates on a timer - one minute per move - and certain shops are open at different times of the day. Other areas include cafes, fast food joins and flower shops. The function keys also perform different commands. F2, F3 and F4 all determine the tone in how you talk to someone - carefully, normally, or threatening. F5 will seduce, F6 will fuck them (this is exactly what the help command reads - "fuck suru"), F7 to attack, F8 to run away, F9 to take (or eat) something, and F10 to give a present. You can buy flowers at the flower shop, or regain stamina buy eating food. Randomly, you'll find a naked waitress at a cafe, whom you can also engage in coitus, if you'd like.

There are also telephone booths and banks scattered about. Apparently actually winning the game requires calling certain people at certain times. You can also get a PIN code to use at the bank, though inputting the wrong one four times will get the cops called on you.

You can only enter love hotels by calling a certain phone number, which are found on certain phone booths. This will schedule an appointment, but the location of the love hotel is randomized every time you call. You only have thirty minutes to reach the hotel, and considering there are eight across the entire city, it's impossible to reach most of them in the time limit. So, you have to keep calling and calling them until they schedule a meetup at one of the hotels nearby.

The visuals were created by Yoichi Erikawa, one of the founders of Koei. According to a 2007 Forbes report, him and his wife (and co-founder) Keiko Erikawa have a net worth of $780 million. It probably says something about the early PC gaming industry that one of the richest people in Japan found their start developing games focused on raping random people in the streets. Nonetheless, it's regarded as something of a bizarre cult classic amongst the Japanese PC gaming retro scene.

Report: Nintendo to offer “mini-games,” videos on smartphones ⊟

A report from Nikkei (a Japanese paper that is often on point about Nintendo rumors) says Nintendo will unveil its concession to the world of smartphones on Thursday, around when the company is expected to hold its quarterly financial results briefing.

No, Nintendo won’t be publishing its marquee games for iPhones, and you shouldn’t sell your 3DS. According to the paper, Nintendo will offer videos and mini-games to help bring awareness to their products.

It’s not quite “Finally Nintendo is making its games for mobile, doing what they obviously should have done years ago to save their company,” which is good, because that approach is about as smart as it sounds when you say it out loud. This strategy sounds more like what The Pokémon Company has done on iOS with its video and mini-game apps. I’m alright with that!

[Update: Nintendo denies Nikkei’s report and says it has “no plans to offer mini-games on smartphone devices.”]

This great comic, by the way comes from Stephen Maurice Graham — lots of great artwork and comics about games on his Tumblr. I like to think that this strip is like the second part of every Iwata comic!
