Prelude to Steam Spring Sale: Walking Dead for $5, SPAZ for $2

by Viet Do
Paul Brownlee

Oh fuck there's a spring sale now too? I don't need this right now.

slide-walkingdead

It’s the middle of April, and that means the seasonal PC gaming sales have commenced. If you’ve been waiting for Steam’s Spring Sale and your wallet is somehow itching to be emptied, earlier this week the digital retailer GMG launched their “7 Days of Deal PC Game Spring Sale” with instant discounts up to 75% off and a stacking 20% off coupon. Every day, they’re introducing new gaming deals which will run for 48 hours. Given most of these are Steam key titles and have historically been as cheap (if not cheaper) than Steam Store’s seasonal sale, it’s a good alternative to tide you over.

Some choice titles appeared on the first day, which unfortunately are now expired, but we’re pretty sure they’ll make an encore on the last day of the sale later this weekend. Good deals included Final Fantasy VII and VIII for only $4.80 each and Tomb Raider GOTY for only $8 (these two should be back this weekend). Day two deals are still ongoing and my personal favorite is SPAZ for $2.

For today’s batch of deals, you’ll have your choice of Telltale adventure games at dirt cheap prices. The Walking Dead game is only $5, or you can grab it with the 400 Days DLC for an extra dollar. There’s also a giant Telltale Collection that includes all the recent Telltale adventure games like Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack, the aforementioned TWD games, Back to the Future, etc.

We’ll keep this post updated through the rest of the week as more deals show up. Don’t forget to use the coupon below on all the games listed for an extra 20% off!

Use coupon code: O3H7FE-D4NFO0-F0LIGK

Best of Day 3 (Ends 4/18 at 9 A.M. Pacific)

Frozen Synapse $24.95 80% $4.99
Huntsman: The Orphanage $14.99 73% $4
Takedown: Red Sabre $14.99 80% $3

by Arne Meyer
Paul Brownlee

John did you play this? If not, you should.

Update: Here’s the debut trailer following hot on the heels of yesterday’s official reveal.

Well, it’s no secret that we have been working night and day at the studio to bring The Last of Us to PS4.

We’re calling it The Last of Us Remastered.

The Last of Us Remastered on PS4

Moving our efforts to the PS4 has allowed us to remaster an already phenomenal looking The Last of Us in 1080p with a list of upgrades including higher resolution character models, improved shadows and lighting, upgraded textures, along with even more improvements. We love setting challenging technical hurdles for us when working on each game – and this is no different. We’ve been working hard on The Last of Us Remastered to release a next-gen evolution worthy of the 200+ Game of the Year awards, not to mention the acclaim and expectations of our fans. We will be revealing more detailed information about the upgrades for the PS4 version in the coming months.

In addition to all the technical updates, we’re also including an exclusive director’s commentary for all in-game cinematics featuring Creative Director and Writer, Neil Druckmann; Voice Actor, Troy Baker, who plays Joel; and BAFTA Award winning Voice Actress, Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie.

We’ve released a ton of additional content since The Last of Us launched in June 2013, including our first ever single player expansion, Left Behind. We’re happy to say that the major content releases will be included with The Last of Us Remastered:

  • Left Behind single player expansion
  • Abandoned Territories multiplayer map pack
  • Reclaimed Territories pack – details will be coming soon on exactly what is included

Whether you are new to The Last of Us or have played it already on the PS3, we hope you are all looking forward to this release. We are!

You can preorder The Last of Us Remastered for PS4 right now from many of your favorite retailers and receive these preorder bonuses:

  • 100 Supply Points (XP) for use in Factions mode
  • Two special bonus skins for Joel and Ellie which will be unlocked after your complete the single player campaign
  • Increased Crafting Speed for use in the Single Player Campaign
  • Increased Healing Speed for use in the Single Player Campaign
  • 9mm Reload Speed Increase Upgrade for use in the Single Player Campaign
  • Rifle Clip Capacity Increase Upgrade for use in the Single Player Campaign

If you preorder on the PlayStation Store, you will receive three extra preorder bonuses to unlocks in Factions multiplayer:

  • Early Access to the Brawler Survival Skill in Factions Mode
  • Early Access to additional Loadout Points for use in Factions mode
  • Early Access to the Jeep Cap and Surgical Mask for use in Factions mode

Now that we’ve finally gotten the official announcement out of the way, we’ll be keeping you updated regularly about The Last of Us Remastered until it releases Summer 2014.

What on Earth is Tomodachi Life?

Paul Brownlee

1. ...The fuck?
2. I might actually buy this.

I've watched this video twice, and I'm still not sure. Tomodachi Life looks to be somewhere between The Sims and a Tamagotchi, where you make Miis of your friends and set them loose on an island to live out drama-filled lives. I don't know about you, but my body is kind of ready (but not as ready as Reggie's). Tomodachi Life drops June 6th.

Pay what you want for SCROLL’s full catalog (plus other stuff!) ⊟

Wow, this Story Bundle is entirely bananas: a pay-what-you-want bundle with the full collection of Ray Barnholt’s SCROLL Magazine, along with a bunch of other cool books I totally wouldn’t mind reading.

You can specify how much goes to the authors and how much goes to StoryBundle (with charity options as well) so your purchase does support the authors.

This is a good chance to give Ray some support for all the hard work he does, or, if you’re perpetually strapped, to check out SCROLL and some other reading material on the cheap.

Also, yeah, I’m quoted on the page about SCROLL. I guess I really like it.

Federal Bill Would Criminalize Revenge Porn Websites

by timothy
Paul Brownlee

Revenge Porn? That's a thing?

(What am I saying, of course that would likely be a thing...)

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from a thought-provoking article at TechDirt: "My own representative in Congress, Jackie Speier, has apparently decided to introduce a federal 'revenge porn' bill, which is being drafted, in part, by Prof. Mary Anne Franks, who has flat out admitted that her goal is to undermine Section 230 protections for websites (protecting them from liability of actions by third parties) to make them liable for others' actions. Now, I've never written about Franks before, but the last time I linked to a story about her in a different post, she went ballistic on Twitter, attacking me in all sorts of misleading ways. So, let me just be very clear about this. Here's what she has said: '"The impact [of a federal law] for victims would be immediate," Franks said. "If it became a federal criminal law that you can't engage in this type of behavior, potentially Google, any website, Verizon, any of these entities might have to face liability for violations.' That makes it clear her intent is to undermine Section 230 and make third parties — like 'Google, any website, Verizon... face liability.'"

Yes I'll buy this.

Kero Blaster out May 11 ⊟

Drop what you’re doing and watch this. It’s the first trailer in a year for Kero Blaster, the new game from one-man Cave Story studio Pixel, and it’s looking hot.

There’s so much going on! It seems so much denser than Cave Story, but the music, graphics, and character movement all seem reminiscent. And, of course, the weapons.

This is being published in North America by Playism, on PC and iOS. It’ll be out May 11! So soon! Last year, Nicalis was teasing a 3DS version as well, but there’s no announcement of that today. Via Siliconera.

Facebook Buying Oculus VR For $2 Billion

by Soulskill
Several readers sent word that Facebook will acquire Oculus VR for $2 billion. Mark Zuckerberg says the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is the beginning of something big: "This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures." The obvious question is: why Facebook would buy a company focused on VR gaming? The Oculus team says, "But when you consider it more carefully, we're culturally aligned with a focus on innovating and hiring the best and brightest; we believe communication drives new platforms; we want to contribute to a more open, connected world; and we both see virtual reality as the next step. ... It opens doors to new opportunities and partnerships, reduces risk on the manufacturing and work capital side, allows us to publish more made-for-VR content, and lets us focus on what we do best: solving hard engineering challenges and delivering the future of VR." Put more simply: money and connections.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars seems awfully prescient now ⊟

While it’s always a great time to return to Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, this 3DS launch title is especially relevant now given current tensions in Eastern Europe. Sure, plenty of games, especially shooters, feature similar plots centered around Russia invading Ukraine.

But as I mentioned in last week’s TinyCast, Shadow Wars actually has a stage in which rogue Russian soldiers occupy Sevastopol, a key port city in Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula (or Republic of Crimea, whatever you wanna call it) that houses Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Remember how silly everyone thought Shadow Wars's story was?

Speaking of Shadow Wars, a new interview with the game’s producer and X-Com co-creator Julian Gollop reveals some hints on why we never saw a sequel — it sold “not so good”, likely due to Nintendo having difficulty selling people on the 3DS during its first year in stores. ::sigh:: At least you can Kickstart his new PC game.

Street Fighter: The Movie: The 20-year Postmortem

by Rob Beschizza
Paul Brownlee

Great read

It's so easy to find things wrong with 1994's Street Fighter movie, I thought that Chris Plante's epic feature about the flick wouldn't have any surprises. But it's wonderfully well-written, and packed with all sorts of morbid detail. Moroever, I feel like I understand something important about the mad thinking behind that whole early wave of Hollywood game-films, right down to the overpolished "blue steel" aesthetic they had.

Van Damme is shooting guns, causing all sorts of mayhem, and he shouts to Chun-Li and Balrog: "Go, go, I'll catch you later." Here's what Van Damme said the first time: "Go, go, I'll catch you later — cut, cut, cut!"

It's unusual for an actor to call cut; that's the director's role, but Van Damme was sure he'd said "ladder" instead of "later" and he demanded they do it over. [Director Steven E.] De Souza, stunned, noted the crew would need to rematch the bullet holes, rerig the actors who fell from catwalks back on their wires, clean off the costume and replace the blood packs. But Van Damme ordered another take. While the crew reset everything, Van Damme listened to the audio and realized he'd had it right. De Souza — vindicated, albeit after losing time and resources — decided to shoot the scene again for backup. Van Damme got in position. De Souza called action.

"Go, go," shouted Van Damme, "I'll catch you ladder!"

So much went wrong that it's a credit to De Souza that he managed to make it to the end. Even so, the palpable disinterest in the source material starts at the very beginning. Days into filming, the director and his stars stand around and realize that no-one on set, least of all themselves, know how to pronounce the name "Ryu."

Mecha Shooter Assault Suits Leynos (a.k.a. Target Earth On Genesis) Bound For PS4

Shit, well I might be taking up one of John's PS4 solicitations soon. I imported Gunhound EX and loved it, that game should really be on Steam.

Assault Suits Leynos brings back memories to the Sega Genesis. Released as Target Earth in North America, this game was a run and gun shooter kind of like Contra with a mech.
