‘War Dogs’ Trailer: Miles Teller and Jonah Hill Run Some Guns for Todd Phillips

by Angie Han

War Dogs trailer

Miles Teller‘s had a bit of bad luck lately. Fantastic Four was an epic flop, The Divergent Series: Allegiant inspired thinkpieces about the death of YA, and the long-delayed Get a Job looks poised to sink without a trace this weekend. Fortunately, his next new film looks like it could get him back on the right track.

Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover), War Dogs stars Teller and Jonah Hill as two 20something stoners who score a $30 million contract from the U.S. government to arm the Afghan military. Which sounds kind of far-fetched, except that War Dogs is based on an all-too-true story. The first War Dogs trailer has just hit, and you can check it out after the jump.

War Dogs Trailer

If this film seems to come out of nowhere, perhaps it’s because it wasn’t called War Dogs when we reported on it last — it was originally titled Arms and the Dudes. The new title is a tad more generic, but it’s easier to say and more effective at conveying what the film is actually about. War Dogs is based on a 2011 Rolling Stone article by Guy Lawson, and has a script written by Phillips, Stephen Chin, and Jason Smilovic. Phillips is better known for comedies like Old School and the Hangover trilogy, but based on the trailer, it appears War Dogs allows him to play to his strengths while branching into new territory. His bro-y sensibility and dark, slightly twisted sense of humor seem to be put to good use in this bro-y, dark, twisted tale.

War Dogs opens August 19.

Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

Pop Quotery combines fine art with equally fine movie quotations

Pop Quotery is a Facebook account that assigns (via comic-book-style word balloons) quotes from prominent movies with famous paintings. Regularly updated with new examples, Pop Quotery has been running since Tuesday and can be followed via Instagram or Twitter if desired. The creator of the account is identified only as an “artist living in SF” who describes the project as a “new adventure.” Whatever the artist’s motivations might be, Pop Quotery’s love of both art and cinema is obviously sincere. One almost suspects that the person behind the account is using familiar movie quotes in order to introduce viewers to classic paintings.

Sons Of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter Writing A New Comic For Boom For June, Lucas Stand

by Rich Johnston

unnamed (1)On Wednesday we noticed that Boom! Studios had a surprise title for June that they would only announce at WonderCon. Well, if DC Comics can play that game, so can they.

Though unlike DC Comics they haven’t got their artists working overnight to finish cover images before the presentation.

Here’s the big reveal… Sons Of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter, writing a new comic, Lucas Stand, with Caitlin Kittredge with artist Jesús Hervás and covers from Lee Bermejo, Frazer Irving, Riley Rossmo and Scott Newman.

Out on June 1st…

Ever since we first saw “Sons of Anarchy,” we knew creator Kurt Sutter had an amazing comic book story in him. Now we’ve got it in Lucas Stand, his first, original comic book series. If you’ve been looking for a new antihero like Jax Teller to root for, Lucas Stand fits the bill.

Lucas Stand is a military vet who can’t reintegrate into society and has emotionally cut himself off from the people he loves. At his lowest, Lucas does something he can’t take back. Hell comes calling, offering him the opportunity to make things right. Demons escaping Hell are upsetting the balance of evil, and now Lucifer has recruited Lucas to send them back. It doesn’t matter in what era the demons escape—World War II, old-timey Hollywood, Vietnam, present day—he must learn to fit in both the past and the present. Given new purpose, Lucas starts to rebuild himself and his life, even as he struggles at the human cost that comes with it.

Archer The Fox Has A Fantastic Laugh

by Zeon Santos

Archer the fox not only has a cool name for a fox, he also has the coolest and most hilarious laugh I've ever heard come out of a fox's maw.

And every time his human starts cracking up Archer literally hits the floor laughing his bushy little tail off, either that or he's got something caught in his throat.

On second thought, maybe Archer is laughing at how messy his humans are, clean up that room people!

Be Less Stupid Is A Show For People Who Like To Know Stuff

by Zeon Santos

The world could use a few more people who have their minds set on being less stupid, because those folks seem to be in short supply these days and the internet only makes it easier to skate by without a brain.

So maybe what we need is a new web series aimed at turning the tides of dumbness, a series with a catchy title like Be Less Stupid, yeah, that's the ticket! (NSFW due to language)

(YouTube Link)

Be Less Stupid is a new series by former Penn & Teller: Bulls#%t! and Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher writer Jon Hotchkiss, who exposes the truth about hot button issues like Coke bleaching, cabin depressurization and whether having sex with a pregnant woman poses a threat to the infant. You know, smart people stuff!

Company Seeks Paid Interns to Drink Beer for 4 Months

by John Farrier

(Unrelated photo by Lachlan Hardy)

These days, it can be really hard for young people to break into their careers. Many have to endure long, unpaid internships to get the necessary skills and contacts for a paid entry-level position.

But not the interns at the World of Beer. This restaurant chain based in Tampa, Florida is offering to pay its interns. There's just one catch: those 3 interns must travel around the world attending beer festivals and drinking beer.

So it's a task for only the hardy. UPI reports:

The interns, who would each be paid $12,000 in addition to their food, lodging and travel expenses, would be required to write about their beer-tasting adventures for the company's website.

"Whether you're a photographer or writer, social media maverick or beer blog surfer, we are looking for you. Adventure seekers and storytellers, beer experts or novices, brewery nerds and foodie fans all open to apply. So if you want to live, drink and tell the tale to the world, get ready to apply for the chance to share your experience as a Drink It Intern," World of Beer said on its website.

The Name of Frankenstein's Monster

by John Farrier

Some snooty know-it-all may correct you when you mention Frankenstein. "No, no--that's Frankenstein's monster. His creator is named Frankenstein. You should read the book instead of some lame horror movie."

That just shows you that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Chip Zdarsky, a comic artist, found the original manuscript to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. If you read to the very end, you'll see that the monster is also named Frankenstein.

Trainy McTrainface

by Miss Cellania

Say what you will about naming a research ship Boaty McBoatface, you have to admit it makes a lot of people smile. And that’s not a bad thing when circumstances try to put you in a bad mood. London’s South West Train service was delayed Tuesday, putting hundreds of commuters behind schedule. But renaming one of the trains trying to go from from Portsmouth to Waterloo “Trainy McTrainface” lightened the mood for many of them.

A South West Trains spokeswoman confirmed the "one-off" name change was genuine.

She said: "It is a one-off by one of our creative guards who wanted to bring a smile to the face of our customers."

What really lightened the mood was knowing that someone in the organization knew it was time to spread a smile, and cared enough to do it.

Dan Harmon Boards ‘Bubbles’, A Stop-Motion Animated Movie About Michael Jackson’s Chimpanzee

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

And why not...

Bubbles Movies

With television projects such as Community and Rick and Morty under his belt, you wouldn’t expect writer and executive producer Dan Harmon to be involved with a project like the Oscar-nominated, animated drama Anomalisa. But Harmon and his Starburns Industires production banner produced the film written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, and now he’s looking to do the same for Bubbles, an original script which topped the 2015 Black List and tells the story of Michael Jackson‘s life through the perspective of his pet chimpanzee named Bubbles.

Deadline reports Andrew Kortschak and his End Cue banner is teaming with Harmon and Starburns Industries to acquire the Bubbles movie, written by Isaac Adamson. The hope is to turn the script into another stop-motion animated movie in the same style as Anomalisa, which used 3D printed puppets to bring characters to life in a very lifelike way.

For those who don’t know, Bubbles is a chimpanzee who was adopted by the King of Pop from an Austin, Texas research facility in 1983. The chimp was moved to Neverland Ranch where he lived with Jackson and began to accompany him to various places. According to Wikipedia, Bubbles sat in on the recording of the iconic “Bad” album and even went on tour with Jackson to Tokyo in 1987 where they stayed in a two-bedroom hotel suite together. They even visited the mayor of Osaka, where Bubbles quietly drank Japanese green tea during the visit.

However, even though the chimpanzee became Michael Jackson’s friend, it also created a strange image of him in the media. Journalist Steve Huey said the public began to see him as a “bizarre eccentric, obsessed with recapturing his childhood.” But perhaps the public only began to see him that way because that’s how the media presented him, going so far as to exaggerate a story about Bubbles being made the ringbearer for Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding at Neverland Ranch in 1991, even though that wasn’t true.

Sadly, Bubbles eventually became overaggressive, as adult chimpanzees do, and he was moved to a monkey sanctuary in Florida where he still lives today.

The film, which doesn’t have a director on board yet, will follow Bubbles from his time as a baby chimp to his release from Michael Jackson’s custody. Bubbles will narrate his own story and detail life inside of Michael Jackson’s inner circle, including all of the fame, glory and scandals that come with it.

This is such a strange project, but it also sounds like a really cool way to tell part of Michael Jackson’s life story. The question is how much of his life story can they tell without getting into any legal trouble with Jackson’s estate. Surely those details are being worked out

‘Veep’ Season 5 Trailer: Selina’s Back

by Angie Han
Corey

Great show.

Veep Season 5 trailer

As we hurtle through what a lot of people believe to be the weirdest primary season ever, HBO’s Veep has its work cut out for it. Namely, is it even possible for this show to out-crazy the stuff going on in real life? Based on the first Veep season 5 trailer, the answer is a solid “maybe” — but we can rest assured the insults on this show will continue to be the most profanely poetic ones heard anywhere on television.

Veep picks up with the fallout from that season 4 cliffhanger, with Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) still struggling to hold on to power. Season 5 could be a huge turning point for Selina’s political career, but it’s a turning point for Veep too — this will be the first season without creator Armando Iannucci. Watch the Veep season 5 trailer after the jump.

That opening scene is Veep in a nutshell. Anyone looking for hope and salvation in politics is better off with Parks & Recreation reruns; this is a show about cynicism and incompetence. And that last quip from Ben (Kevin Dunn) is quintessentially Veep, too. Iannucci isn’t the only person on the Veep writing staff who knows his way around an R-rated joke.

In addition to the usual woes caused by her hilariously incompetent staff, Selina will face a bunch of new hurdles including Chinese hackers, a financial disaster reminiscent of Greece (“the country not the musical,” a bank bailout, and a new boy toy played by Mad Men‘s John Slattery. And all this, as the Veep season 5 trailer reminds you, in the middle of a tied election against Senator O’Brien (Friday Night Lights‘ Brad Leland).

Veep doesn’t usually go for ripped-from-the-headlines storylines, so Selina’s election year probably won’t look too much like our own. But at a time when millions of Americans, of all political leanings, are deathly afraid for the future of this country, it might be nice to kick back and laugh at some political fuckups that don’t send a chill down your spine.

Veep season 5 premieres April 24 at 10:30 PM on HBO, right after Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley.
