Few would argue that GoPro is the king of the action camera world. It's the brand of choice for professional film crews and amateur enthusiasts alike and dominates the competition in terms of market share and brand recognition. GoPro's current flagship model, the HERO4 Black, is touted by many as the best action cam on the market.

A couple of weeks ago, GeekBuying.com asked if I would be interested in reviewing a new GoPro competitor, the YI 4K Action Camera.

Some people, like my slovenly neighbor Frank, hate to scoop their dog's poop and just leave it where their dogs excrete it. Other people don't mind picking up dog poop and would like to earn a few extra bucks. Pooper brings them together.

Pooper is a new app that connects people who are willing to pay to have someone scoop their dog poop with people who are willing to do just that for cash. Poopers use their phones to leave geographic markers on a map. This is viewable to Scoopers, who scurry over to snag that brown gold. The Washington Post talked to co-founder Ben Becker:

Becker said they believe Pooper is what America needs now, because there’s too much dog waste on the streets. “It’s not our intention to ostracize,” he said.  “It is our intention to solve a problem in a unique way.”

The app, he said, has already gotten sign-ups “by the hundreds,” to be both poopers (customers) and scoopers (employees), even though it is only “at the tail end of an alpha rather than a fully functional public beta” testing phase in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. He said they hope to fully launch in those cities in the fall and then expand Pooper to as many locations as the market demands.

This promotional video shows how Pooper works. Some people think that it's a hoax. That would be a shame, as it would be a great job for kids who would like to earn a bit of money.

The group of 1,000 musicians who got together to do the Foo Fighter’s “Learn to Fly” last year had so much fun, they decided to stay together as a group! Organizer Fabio Zaffagnini arranged for a concert last Sunday.

Jamal Igle has designed this year’s Brooklyn Defender for Brooklyn Brewery and New York Comic Con.

The new package design will be available in 27 states across the US and for the first time internationally in France, Spain and Korea.

The 2016 Defender is a bold new hero from Brooklyn who rockets through the skies and scours the alleys to defend against the forces of blandness everywhere. Clad in a homemade high-tech armor suit, her constant vigilance and technological brilliance protects brewers, creators and beer drinkers. This year’s rendition will be introduced at a release party at Brooklyn Brewery on August 17 and will be available in bottles and on tap where Brooklyn beer is sold in preparation for New York Comic Con, October 6-9 at the Javits Center.

Igle says “My take on the Brooklyn Defender is that the hero represents today’s DUMBO – high tech and can save many from bland nights by soaring through the skies,” explains Jamal Igle. “Not only does she outsmart her enemies, but she also utilizes her athleticism and artistic abilities to defend against tasteless beer and those who stand behind her.”

Over the past few years, Netflix has built up a TV slate to rival any of its competitors’, serving up everything from ground-level superheroes to depressed horse-men and receiving showers of prestigious awards and critical praise in return. The service isn’t quite there yet with its original movie offerings, but a quick glance at their upcoming calendar suggests that could very well change in the near future. One of their most promising upcoming releases? Mascots, the new comedy from Best in Show and A Mighty Wind director Christopher Guest.

Netflix first announced its deal to acquire Mascots almost exactly one year ago, in August 2015. Today the very first teaser trailer has arrived, bearing a fall 2016 release date. Check out the Mascots teaser, and pore over the first Mascots poster, after the jump. 

The Mascots teaser trailer doesn’t feature any actual footage from the film. Its main job is to reveal the release date: October 13, 2016.

The official synopsis for Mascots reads as follows:

Going clockwise from the top center:

• That’s Guest regular Jane Lynch standing tall at the top. She’s one of the few stars who isn’t in a mascot costume, so perhaps she’s a competition judge.
• The red octopus is Zach Woods of Silicon Valley and The Office. This is his first time working with Guest.
• The green turtle is Sarah Baker, whose credits include The Campaign, NBC’s Go On, and that one episode of Louie that launched a thousand thinkpieces.
• Way off to the right, that looks like Don Lake, who’s worked with Guest on Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration.
• The brown rodent near the center is Tom Bennett, who had a very funny supporting role in Love & Friendship and a regular role in Guest’s HBO series Family Tree.
• Front and center in the purple is another Guest favorite, Parker Posey. Her costume looks like a slapdash affair, so make she’s a dark horse competitor.
• Seated on the left is Ed Begley Jr., a staple of Guest’s films. Like Lake and Lynch, he’s in regular (non-mascot) dress.
• The blue guy is Christopher Moynihan, from For Your Consideration and A Mighty Wind.
• And finally, the dude with the giant fist is Guest’s Family Tree star Chris O’Dowd, though he’s probably even better known for Bridesmaids and The IT Crowd.

In addition to all the actors named above, Mascots will feature Jennifer Coolidge, John Michael Higgins, Bob Balaban, Fred Willard, Michael Hitchcock, Harry Shearer, and Jim Piddock, all of whom you may recognize from Guest’s previous works, plus Susan Yeagley, Kerry Godliman, Maria Blasucci, Oscar Nuñez, and more. Mascots arrives October 13.

HBO’s delayed Westworld finally has an airdate.

The premium cable channel announced today that the series, based on the 1973 Micheal Crichton film about androids in a theme park turning on their masters, will debut on October 2nd.

Described by the network as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin” the series stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton and Jeffrey Wright. It was created for television by Person of Interest‘s Jonathan Nolan and Pushing Daises‘ Lisa Joy.

“Building on the incredibly evocative concept of the original film, we wanted to pose the question: If you could be completely immersed in a fantasy, one in which you could do whatever you wanted, would you discover things about yourself that you didn’t want to know?” said Nolan in a statement.

“We also wanted to explore what it means to be human from the outside in – through the eyes of the ‘hosts’: the lifelike AI characters that are the main attractions of the park. It’s a meditation on consciousness – the blessing and the burden of it – beautifully portrayed by our remarkable cast,” added Joy.

The project has had its share of troubles since it was first announced. It was originally planned to debut in 2015, but then delayed. Then came reports of extras being asked to agree to “graphic sexual situations,” which, considering the film, isn’t all that surprising. The production then shut down in January to “catch up” on the final four scripts.

And, according to reports coming from today’s screening at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour, the pilot features the off-screen rape of one of the hosts; leading to further discussions about the use of sexual violence on the channel during an executive session with HBO’s head of programming Casey Bloys.

Of course, Game of Thrones, known for its nudity and graphic situations, also had a rocky start with large parts of its pilot reshot and several actors recast before it aired.

But viewers will have a chance to see if the project was worth the wait when Westworld debuts this fall.

And you should apply! It requires not just an appreciation for beer, but a rich understanding of its roles and development in American history. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC wants a beer scholar on staff to explore and explain beer in American life. The Washington City Paper quotes curator Paula Johnson:

"We have collected food history for many years, so when we were doing the research for the exhibition, which is all about big changes in the post WW II era in how and what we eat, one thing we were curious about is the craft beer movement," Johnson says. "We were looking at wine, coffee, cheese, artisanal bread, and farmers markets. Well, this movement with small-scale, local regional beer is part of the ethos."

Yes, that's Groot and Rocket Raccoon in this official NASA patch. It will represent all of the science missions of the US National Laboratory on board the International Space Station during 2016. The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) worked with Marvel artist Juan Doe to develop the design. Space.com reports:

"A major mission for us here at CASIS is to find unique and innovative ways to bring notoriety to the International Space Station National Laboratory and the research that is being conducted," stated Ken Shields, CASIS's operations and educational opportunities director. "There are very few brands in the world who have as large an impact as Marvel and we are thrilled to partner with them on this project."

Steve Buscemi has a very unique appearance which makes it unlikely he'll ever be mistaken for, say, your uncle Ted, that is, unless Ted is a Buscemi look-alike.

Steve's look naturally makes him stand out in a crowd, and he can't hide his Buscemi eyes for long before somebody notices there's a major movie star in their presence and starts freaking out.

So how come this kid's mom didn't notice when he started replacing family photos in their house with pics of Steve Buscemi? Is she somehow immune to Buscemi's ocular charms?

Bodypaint artist Johannes Stötter is famous for hiding the human body in the shape of animals with the perfect amount of shading and the right mixture of paint. This time he painted three women into a sculpture of a wolf. If you’re looking closely, you can see the shape of the person on the wolf’s belly and back but the head of the wolf is so well done that it hides the last bodypainted person wonderfully.
