Music Monday: Bayonetta

by Brian Bickell
Pete Mecum

Loved the music in this game. LISTEN TO IT!

Google image search for Bayonetta is mostly embarrassing.

I have a confession to make. I slept on this game when it came out and I’ve not actually played it. The only reason I know about the soundtrack is that it’s in heavy rotation on the Salty Bet stream (which is actually chock full of incredible music). That out of the way, I’ll proceed as usual.

Bayonetta is a third-person action game developed by Platinum Games and released in 2010. It’s in the same vein as games in the Devil May Cry series with over the top stylized action being the major focus. The story focuses on the title character’s quest to understand her past after awakening from a long sleep with no memory.

That’s about all I know about the game to be honest. It’s definitely on the bucket list, but my backlog is already obscene so I don’t know when I’ll get to it. Musically, however, I can say that the soundtrack is quite good. It features a lot of high energy jazzy tracks as well as some really great orchestral tracks. There are many people credited in the music but from what I can tell Hiroshi Yamaguchi was in charge of composing for the soundtrack. His other works include the Okami soundtrack. This is a large soundtrack with a lot of different sounds in it and I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit.

Unfortunately the only list with the whole soundtrack that I could find on YouTube has embedding disabled so you’ll have to hit the link below.

Tim Schafer Playing EarthBound

by Mato
Pete Mecum

Eartbound is best game; very good; A+++; great jorb.

Queue sent me this e-mail the other day:

I had heard Tim Schafer – videogame entrepreneur and legend of games like Pyschnoauts and Brutal Legend – was playing EarthBound. So I started following him on Twitter and noticed that he was up late tweeting about Worthless Protoplasm. The rest follows in the pic. I never really got Twitter at first, but that was something special for me right there. I’m a fan of Schafer’s stuff and, oddly, to get to connect with him through EarthBound makes me understand the guy even more.

Thought you’d get it kick out of it. Follow me on Twitter! Haha!

@Cfillhart

And here’s a look at it:

Retweet-Schafer

Between this and the creators of South Park being inspired by EarthBound, it’s really cool and surreal to see these big-name creative minds commenting on and drawing from EarthBound!

Support Boobjam, A Game Jam About Boobs

by Cara Ellison
Pete Mecum

SUPPORT!

Lovely friend and colleague at Unwinnable Jenn Frank is not only one of my favourite writers about games, but she is also compassionate and intelligent and has come up with a great idea. Instead of complaining about the portrayal of breasts in games, why don’t we make more games about them? Specifically, why don’t we make games about all the different ways that we encounter them, and not just as some jiggle physics in Dead or Alive?

Read on for more details on the Boob Jam. (more…)

Opening Shot: 25 Mins Of Murdered: Soul Suspect

by Craig Pearson
Pete Mecum

Looks good. 2014 :(

Solved: the killer is Kevin Spacey
Just as it took me over a decade to get pun in “Diagon Alley” (Don’t judge me: I got it after walking through it on the Harry Potter Tour. Hmm, I sense further judging after that revelation…), I only just noticed that Murdered: Soul Suspect was a pun. They slipped it in like a clove in tasty rice. In this case, the “soul” part refers to the fact that the detective investigating a murder is a ghost and is looking into his own death, but also to the idea that he’s hunting down a single suspect. Anyway, I have no sympathy for the profane main character. He has a silly hat and he is a smoker.

by Valve
Pete Mecum

Oooooo... new traps by the community. Sounds like fun!

Robot Entertainment today announced that Orcs Must Die! 2 now supports Steam Workshop! When it released last summer, Orcs Must Die! 2 gave players a broad new Spellbook filled with new and old traps and hundreds of upgrades. Robot Entertainment is now giving War Mages the tools to expand their magical arsenal even further.

Have you been yearning for a crossbow that shoots freezing bolts? Now you can make one. Craving a special tar trap for the Sorceress? You’ve got it. Combine all of the game’s traps, visual effects, and stat effects with your own custom textures and Spellbook art to custom-build your new favorite traps, trinkets, and weapons. Once you’ve put them to the test, upload your custom items to the Workshop to share with thousands of War Mages and give the Order a plethora of new ways to slaughter orcs!

Orcs Must Die! 2 Workshop Features:
  • Craft New Traps, Trinkets, and Weapons – Using existing Spellbook items, War Mages can construct a dizzying array of new traps to take into battle. Combine existing 3D models with new textures, new stats, new upgrade designs, and new visual effects to craft and share your best orc-maiming ideas.
  • New Onslaughts – Modify the creatures and timing for waves in existing Orcs Must Die! 2 fortresses and caves to create new and challenging experiences. Did you already beat the game on Nightmare? Now you can create your own ultra-Nightmare Mode to put your skills to the test. Share your custom onslaught levels and campaigns with the community on Workshop.
  • New Costumes – Replace the textures on any of the sixteen War Mage and Sorceress costumes in Orcs Must Die! 2. Create a huge closet of intimidating new costumes to strike fear into the hearts of orcs!
Get started with the Orcs Must Die! 2 Workshop here.

Cloud Gaming: Final Fantasy VII On Steam

by Adam Smith
Pete Mecum

CHEEVS

As I browsed through the list of new releases on Steam this morning, a blaring midi tune began to belch its way into my brain. The screen flashed – a random encounter! Final Fantasy VII had unexpectedly appeared, a comically large sword thrusting from the screen and carrying with it promises of a seemingly endless slog through a bloated story with precisely one memorable scene. Yes, you know the one, when Aerith reveals that she’s actually a robot the gang of heroes clamber up what seems like a hundred identical stairwells, quipping in blocks of blue text that do not appreciate the value of comic timing.
