Spelunky Completed In The Hardest Possible Way

by Graham Smith

Solo Aubergine Run, technically.

Some of you are going to think this isn’t news, but I want to talk about it anyway. Caster Bananasaurus Rex has completed Spelunky in a Solo Eggplant Run. Don’t know what that means? Come inside. Sit down. Let me explain.

ChiliPad: A waterbed to go on your bed

by drew
Pete Mecum

SOLD

51QMP66i6wL._SY355_

The ChiliPad seems like a good idea. It lets you selectively heat and cool two halves of your bed. It’s $399, which is a little bit insane for a bed-sized blob of water, so I read the reviews, which said:

1. It shines a bright light throughout your bedroom at night.

2. It’s supposed to go down to 46 degrees, but it heats back up to 70 as soon as you lay down on it.

3. Almost every review said that it leaks water into your bed.

4. All the leak-based reviews noted that the company wouldn’t replace the product.

Now Available on Steam - Risk of Rain

by Valve
Pete Mecum

THIS LOOKS AWESOME!

Risk of Rain is Now Available on Steam

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.

The three main goals for our game are simple:
1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.
2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!
3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

"..a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I've experienced in such games" - John Walker via RockPaperShotgun

ESPURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

The Things Espurr has Seen...

The blank expressioned Espurr from Pokémon X and Y is making it’s rounds around the internet. Looks like it might even have earned its own permanent fixture on Know Your Meme. Personally, I think it looks like Kyuubey, from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, who finally realized what he has been doing, but that’s just me.

The true story about the woman who sued McDonald's over hot coffee

by Maggie Koerth-Baker
Pete Mecum

I feel like this happens a lot on Reddit; the over simplification and twisting of stories to cause knee-jerk reactions and to generate up votes.

The story of a woman who spilled coffee on her lap and ended up being awarded $2.9 million in a lawsuit against McDonald's is often cited as THE example of frivolous lawsuits and out-of-control juries. The real story, though, is different from the version you've probably heard. For one thing, the woman suffered 3rd-degree burns to 16% of her body. For another, at the time, McDonald's served their coffee at a temperature 30 degrees hotter than the stuff that comes out of home coffeemakers. Also the $2.9 million was only the jury-recommended award, based on just two days worth of McDonald's coffee sales. This New York Times video is an interesting look at the nuance that gets lost when media, pop culture, and politicians twist an event to better serve their own narratives and ends.

Now Available - The Stanley's Parable

by Valve
Pete Mecum

Yesssssssssssssssss

The Stanley Parable is Now Available on Steam and 20% off the first week*.

The Stanley Parable is a first person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end. Contradiction follows contradiction, the rules of how games should work are broken, then broken again. This world was not made for you to understand.

But as you explore, slowly, meaning begins to arise, the paradoxes might start to make sense, perhaps you are powerful after all. The game is not here to fight you; it is inviting you to dance.

*Offer ends on October 23rd.

Manyland: a virtual world where you draw stuff and it becomes real

by Cory Doctorow
Pete Mecum

There are too many lands here.

Philipp sez, "We are two indie developers who just opened the doors to Manyland, a limitless, shared world where you can shape things together with others in any way you want by drawing them... from the bridges you stand on, the houses you see, the plants and oceans, to the body you are walking with. We hope some of you like this and join us. (Note: There's zero "posting to your wall/connecting your friends" stuff for the logins... it's just used to save you registering another account.)"

100 Titles Greenlit Today

by Valve
Pete Mecum

Cool!

As we work to streamline the publishing workflow and improve the tools available to developers preparing for release on Steam, we've reached a point where we are ready to stress-test our system.

The best way to accomplish this is to invite a significant number of developers to use the updated  tools and systems, ship their games and software  with these tools, and to give us feedback so that we may continue to improve the process.

To that end, today we've Greenlit another 100 titles, bringing the total number of titles offered worldwide Steam publishing agreements via Greenlight to 260.

We couldn't fit a list of the 100 Greenlit items in this blog post, so we have instead created an official collection listing them all out here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=171260210

This latest milestone is both a celebration of the progress we've made behind the scenes and a stress test of our systems. Future batches are not likely to be as large, but if everything goes smoothly we should be able to continue increasing the throughput of games from Greenlight to the Steam store.

As with past batches, these titles will be released independently in the weeks or months ahead, as they complete development and integrate any Steamworks features they are interested in utilizing.

Kotaku Interview with EarthBound’s Localization Director

by Mato

Good ol’ Jason Schreier from Kotaku recently had an interview with good ol’ Marcus Lindblom, who was the localization director for EarthBound. As always, Marcus provides lots of really fascinating and interesting info about the project – check out the interview here!

I think long-time readers might like what he has to say about the Giygas fetus theory too:

“I think that this is a great instance of people reading in stuff that was probably never really intended,” Lindblom said. “There’s certainly nothing wrong with people doing that kind of thing. In reality, as far as we were ever concerned, nothing like that ever came up.”

Check out the rest of what he says here!
