A citywide artists' competition in Montreal, Canada recently gave birth to a plan to turn Mont-Royal Avenue into a huge installation of comic book panels for the winter season. Estelle Jugant and Yazid Belkhir of lighting design firm Turn Me On won the bid to create “Idée-O-Rama,” a sprawling series of illuminated thought-bubble-shaped lampposts featuring the artwork of Astro and Jean-François Poliquin. Literally creating a visual dialogue between the street and its inhabitants, the bubbles feature traditional winter icons like Nordic sweaters, snowshoes, and bundled up kids, as well as (understandably) stressed out, snow-shoveling animals and super chill yetis.

It’s a huge step beyond the tired tinsel and candy canes hovering above many city streets this year, and will be on view on the avenue until February 2014. See below for a short video on the construction and installation of Idée-O-Rama:
