Really? A Doughnut Bacon Sandwich

by Alan

Dunkin’ Donuts believes it will sell.

The sandwich, which comes with fried eggs and bacon between a split glazed doughnut, will become a part of the permanent menu starting Friday, which the chain claims is “National Donut Day.” Dunkin’ Donuts had tested the sandwich in select stores in eastern Massachusetts in April, creating considerable buzz online.

Notably, Dunkin’ Donuts says the “Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich” clocks in at 360 calories, which is less than the 390 calories for the turkey sausage sandwich it recently introduced for people looking to eat better.

Giant Hot Pink Slug

by Alex Santoso

Photo: Michael Murphy

Got slugs in your garden? Betcha not like this giant pink slug in Australia! National Parks ranger Michael Murphy shares with us some photos of the giant, hot pink slug in Mount Kaputar, New South Wales:

''It's just one of those magical places, especially when you are up there on a cool, misty morning,'' said Michael Murphy, a national parks ranger for 20 years, whose beat covers the mountain top.

''It's a tiny island of alpine forest, hundreds of kilometres away from anything else like it. The slugs, for example, are buried in the leaf mould during the day, but sometimes at night they come out in their hundreds and feed off the mould and moss on the trees. They are amazing, unreal-looking creatures.''

Locals had long reported seeing bizarre pink slugs after rainfall in the area, but it was only very recently that taxonomists confirmed the slugs, Triboniophorus aff. graeffei, as well as several of the snail species - which prey on other vegetarian land snails - were unique to the mountaintop.

Must-see morning clip: Woman wins $1 million on “Wheel of Fortune”

On Thursday night, 30 year-old Autumn Erhard became the second contestant ever on "Wheel of Fortune" to win $1 million dollars.

Erhard, who had been leading the other two contestants the whole night, carried a "Wild Card" into the bonus round, granting her an extra consonant. With only a few clues, she correctly guessed the puzzle: "Tough Workout."

Erhard, participating in the show's "Celebrating 30" themed-week, was "in completed and utter shock." "I'm shaking. I came here today because I love the game, I wanted to have some fun and solve some puzzles – I feel like I'm in a dream!" she said.

She was joined on set by her fiancé and her parents.

Quote Of The Day - Dan Savage

by Joe
"I tell this story in the book of being at this park in Seattle many years ago, where a limo pulls up and a bride and a groom tumble out to get their portraits at this very famous park with a beautiful view of downtown Seattle. And as they're walking back to the limo everyone starts to applaud, and rightly so. Everyone takes delight when two people find each other and make that commitment. I was standing there clapping next to these two older gentlemen with two big dogs. It was clear that they were gay and I was gay. And as they get into their car, the one closest to me looks at me and says, `We are always happy for them. Would it kill them to be happy for us?' We've reached that tipping point, where they are happy for us. Now you see straight people looking at gay people and recognizing something about themselves in us." - Dan Savage, speaking to the Associated Press.

Oprah delivers Harvard commencement speech

On Thursday, OWN creator Oprah Winfrey delivered the commencement speech for Harvard's graduating class, also accepting an honorary degree from the Ivy League institution. After dispensing advice on how to deal with personal and professional failure, the talk show host encouraged students to work for a greater purpose. Sharing her's, she said she worked to "eliminate the transcendent power of our better angels" in television. "We are better than the cynicism and the pessimism that is regurgitated throughout Washington and the 24-hour cable news cycle," said Winfrey.

IL House Rep Joins Marriage Backers

by Joe
We can add at least one more Illinois House rep to the list of "yes" votes on marriage equality.
It didn't come quickly, the decision to support the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, but on Memorial Day when State Rep. LaShawn Ford said he would vote this week in favor of gay marriage in Illinois, the choice seemed clear to him. "This is a well-thought-out decision," he said in an exclusive interview with Wednesday Journal, a sister newspaper of Austin Weekly News. Ford, a one-time seminarian, said he had prayed over it. He said he has been swamped with strong opinions from constituents on both sides of the controversy. He acknowledged he has felt heavy lobbying from a politically active segment of the black clergy.
Ford adds that he was inspired by the comparison of the LGBT movement to the struggle for black civil rights. The vote must come by the end of this week.

Getting the Knack of It

>> The Other Shop formerly known as bStore, previously in Savile Row but now firmly rooted in Kingly Street has settled in quite nicely with its womenswear offerings growing stronger by the season.  A new addition to their S/S 13 roster of labels is which I got quite excited about was A.Knackfuss, designed by Brussels-based, German-born Alice Knackfuss, whose career I've coincidentally followed without meaning to.  I happed upon her work when she entered the Hyeres competition back in 2009 and also saw her later joint label venture at the Brussels store Hunting & Collecting.  Now she is properly solo with her brand A.Knackfuss and has three solid collections under her belt, which fully exploit her experience of designing menswear with Ute Ploier and Kris van Assche.  Her vibe of incorporating the oversized proportions of menswear in womenswear chimes in nicely with the sort of cross-genre and in her words "chameleonic" state of fashion today where women don't simply crave the simplistically feminine and increasingly reach out for menswear pieces.  That doesn't mean they want to eschew textural, print and colour interest either as A. Knackfuss' A/W 13-4 "Syncopia" collection attests.  Psychedelic tripped-out prints, quilted leather sleeves, sheer layers and vibrant purple and yellow plaid all manage to blend seamlessly with the tomboyish silhouettes that Knackfuss proposes.  It's a collection that for me speaks of 21st century MP3 pick n' mix culture - a raved up electro ripple of a print here, a quiet ambient XX-esque zippered coat there and the ever pervasive slackercore checks lingering on from the nineties.  What brings all the elements together is the dissonance of Knackfuss' chopped-up proportions - cropped and elongated where necessary and employing tailoring and peplums to balance out any oversized pieces.  Hopefully The Other will carry on supporting Knackfuss' collections as her work certainly adds a dynamic energy to their existing roster of labels.

CNN’s Blitzer Flummoxed By Oklahoma Atheist

by dave-dr-gonzo
Shainaf87

oh my ?

Adults say the darnedest things!

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was doing a pretty good job of channeling the late, great Art Linkletter while interviewing a very young boy (and his mom) in Moore, Oklahoma. But when Blitzer — who, if you weren’t aware, used to work as a “journalist” on the Christian Broadcasting Network — changed the subject, saying the mom and son were blessed and asking if she prayed and “thank[ed] the Lord,” things just went horribly — and hilariously — wrong.

Dog is Rescued While Rescuing a Kitten

by Miss Cellania

vAn animal control officer in Anderson, South Carolina, responded to a call about a barking dog. When Michelle Smith went to investigate, she found a tiny Shih Tzu mix barking in a ravine. Smith climbed down the embankment, which she says the dog could have easily climbed out of herself, and found out why the dog was there. She was nursing a tiny kitten!

"I didn’t know what to think," she said. "I was shocked and surprised and then of course, awww."

The dog and kitten received the same reaction when Smith took them to the animal shelter. Volunteers marveled at the way the dog, which is at least 5 years old, looks out for the 5-week-old kitten.

Jessica Cwynar, director of the shelter, says such behavior is natural for mammals.

"It would be like one of us seeing a neglected or abandoned child and taking it under our wing," she said.

Neither the dog nor the kitten has a known name, so shelter volunteers call them "Girl."

Cwynar said the 5-year-old dog likely started producing milk because of a surge of hormones when she found the kitten. The dog is obviously a pet, and the shelter is hoping the owner will come forward and take the kitten, too. Link -via Arbroath, where you can see a video.

Obama to all-male university graduates: Be the best husband to “your boyfriend or partner”

President Obama addressed Moorehouse College's 2013 graduating class over the weekend and, in his speech on "what it means to be a man," told the all-male graduating class to be the "best husband to your wife, your boyfriend or your partner":

Keep setting an example for what it means to be a man. Be the best husband to your wife, or your boyfriend, or your partner.  Be the best father you can be to your children. Because nothing is more important.

He went on to urge the students to "care about justice for everybody":

As Morehouse Men, many of you know what it’s like to be an outsider; know what it’s like to be marginalized; know what it’s like to feel the sting of discrimination.  And that’s an experience that a lot of Americans share.  Hispanic Americans know that feeling when somebody asks them where they come from or tell them to go back.  Gay and lesbian Americans feel it when a stranger passes judgment on their parenting skills or the love that they share.  Muslim Americans feel it when they’re stared at with suspicion because of their faith.  Any woman who knows the injustice of earning less pay for doing the same work -- she knows what it’s like to be on the outside looking in.

Giorgio Moroder - Racer

by Joe
Consequence Of Sound reports:
Italian supercomposer Giorgio Moroder’s having quite a ball lately. In addition to being immortalized by Daft Punk on their latest album — in what’s arguably the best track off Random Access Memories — he’s back with his own new music. No, he’s not churning something out for director Brian De Palma; this time, he’s working alongside Google.

“Racer” is the title track to a new game on Google Chrome that’s either about racing or minimalistic ’70s artwork. (Really, we can’t tell.) According to the game’s website, users can line up their phones and/or tablets to create a race track across up to five screens. Sounds groovy, right? You have no idea.
Information about the game is here.

Health Dept Shuts Hell's Kitchen Bar

by Joe
Shainaf87

ryan!!!

Flaming Saddles, the popular Hell's Kitchen country gay bar, was shut down this week by the NYC Health Department.
The hot spot — which features shirtless bartenders who two-step on the bar, as well as serving dishes like "Frito Pie" — was letting hot food get cold, had improper plumbing, and had a food preparation counter that was "improperly constructed," the inspection report said.  Inspectors also found "filth flies" in the bar, food that was "contaminated" and "cross-contaminated," and that the kitchen's supervisor didn't have proper food protection certification. It racked up a total of 61 violation points, according to the inspection.
