6 Awesome April Events from All Over

by Miss Cellania

The return of warm weather and the celebration of Easter give us many traditional festivals. They don’t look the same everywhere; in fact they are so different they won’t fit into any category, except they happen in April. Which of these would you jump on a plane for?

1. Naghol Land Diving Festival, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu

Photograph by Flickr user whl.travel.

The island of Pentecost, in the nation of Vanuatu, invented the sport of bungee jumping, but it’s not like anything you’ve seen elsewhere. The tradition is called Gol or Naghol, or land diving in English. Men of the Sa tribe build a tower 20 to 30 meters tall, and jump off the top, secured only by a vine tied to their ankle. If the vine is too long or not ripe enough, the man may die (the last such death was in 1974). The ritual is a passage to manhood, a male fertility rite, and a prayer for a good harvest, all rolled into one. Although restricted to men, the legend behind the story has a woman bungee jumping:

In it, a wife escapes from her abusive husband, Tamalie, who discovers her up a tree. In exchange for coming back down, he promises to beat her, but only a little bit this time. However, if he has to climb up to retrieve her, he promises to beat her a lot. She refuses his “offer” and remains in the tree until eventually Tamalie makes the climb. Once he reaches her, she quickly hurls herself from the branch falling to the earth below. He dives after her to catch her (whether out of guilt or hubris isn’t known), and falls to his death, not realizing that she had cleverly tied liana vines around her ankles to prevent herself from falling all the way down.

Before a jump, the participant loudly proclaims his skill and bravery from the top of the tower. The aim of the jump is to touch the ground, but not enough as to cause death. The Naghol Festival was once restricted to April, but the tourist boom has caused the festival to stretch into May and June in the past few years. Jumps will take place on Saturdays, beginning April 5th. Spectators are limited to 50 per event.

2. Kanamara Matsuri Festival, Kawasaki, Japan

The Kanamara Matsuri Festival is the Festival of the Steel Phallus, but locals just call it the Penis Festival. It is held the first Sunday in April, which is the 6th this year, in Kawasaki, Japan. The legend behind the festival involves a demon who invaded a woman’s vagina and bit off any penises coming her way, until a blacksmith forged a steel phallus that defeated the demon. The legend led to the veneration of the steel phallus, and its enshrinement. The shrine was used by Shinto prostitutes praying for protection from venereal disease, and they would carry giant phalluses through the streets. The procession is still tradition, along with other festival activities like dancing, food, and souvenirs. Not that you’d want to show them off in your living room. See more pictures here. Be warned that all of these links contain NSFW images. It wasn’t easy selecting one for this list that might not offend.

3. Semana Santa de Sevilla, Seville, Spain

Holy Week, leading up to Easter, sees traditional rituals and festival all over the world. Seville, Spain, is particularly known for their week of public rituals and processions, called Semana Santa, which people travel from all over the world to see. Seventy different groups (church brotherhoods) dressed in medieval hoods and robes, carry life size depictions of Holy Week scenes through the streets in these processions. Semana Santa festivities will take place from April 13th to 20th this year.

4. World Marbles Championship, Tinsley Green, UK

The British and World Marbles Championship is held every year on Good Friday in Tinsley Green, West Sussex, England. This year’s competition is on April 18th. The tradition began in 1588, when two men competing for a woman’s hand agreed to decide the outcome on a series of sporting events, which lasted a week, but the final outcome was decided by a game of marbles. The modern incarnation of the tournament has been held annually since 1932, with only wartime interruptions. Competitors come from all over Europe, plus the United States and Australia.

5. Rouketopolemos, Vrontados, Greece

Photograph from Atlas Obscura.

Rouketopolemos is the traditional Rocket War that occurs between two churches in Vrantados in the Greek island of Chios. Fireworks are commonly detonated across many Greek communities at midnight at the beginning of Easter Sunday. But in Vrontados, the rockets are aimed at the bell towers of St. Mark's and Panaghia Ereithiani, two hilltop churches. The tradition goes back to the days of the Ottoman Empire, but no one is quite sure what the real story was. The churches are battened down ahead of time, and the police mostly turn a blind eye to the war, but will step in if someone is injured.

The war launches during Easter evening services, and upward of 80,000 small rockets are launched. As a "winner" can rarely be verified, the rivals agree to continue the war next year. The presence of huge numbers of tourists gives the two factions encouragement to continue the tradition. This year’s battle will take place on the evening of April 20th.

6. Beltane Fire Festival, Edinburgh, Scotland

Photograph by SixSigma.

Beltane, the Gaelic May Day, begins on the sunset of April 30th and runs through the sunset of May 1st, and is the halfway mark between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice. Presented by the Beltane Fire Society, the Beltane Fire Festival in Edinburgh is a cultural remnant of the old pagan holiday.

Photograph by Stefan Schäfer, Lich.

The Fire Festival takes places on the evening of April 30th on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It begins with a procession led by the May Queen and the Green Man. A performance retells the mythical story of the earth’s step into summer, and the bonfires are lit. The performers dance, and are joined by spectators.

Bizarre Helmets That Warp Facial Features

by Zeon Santos
Shainaf87

haunted house 2014

Helmets are worn to protect the head against flying objects and the elements, occasionally worn to keep a Sith lord alive and show the galaxy that he’s a total badass, but these are not the helmets you’re looking for if you need head protection.

These bizarre dome helmets distort facial features in fun ways, helping Korean artist Hyungkoo Lee create some truly unique portraits for a series called The Objectuals, a series where the subjects look like Space Age supervillains or something out of an anime series.

Hyungkoo definitely has an affinity for facial feature distortion, with another series called Face Trace you can check out on his site.

Kittehs, Doughnuts, And Pancakes. (Obvious Combination, No?)

by Brinke

It is an obvious combo if you’re in the Land Of The Rising Sun Smack You In Your Face QTE, aka Japan. Found these photos on Rocketnews 24 (of course,) and according to their story, “A Japanese housewife named Caroline Ingalls [Like Little House. -Ed.] creates these annually on Cat’s Day (22 February in Japan.) She started off with making cat shaped nerikiri, a traditional Japanese sweet made by mixing shiro-an (sweetened white bean paste) with gyuhi (made of glutinous rice, similar to mochi but softer,) then tinted and sculpted into various shapes and styles. The best (or worst) part is, those cats aren’t just decorations, they’re completely edible!”

Thanks for the swell reporting RN24! (And that’s all well and good, but can she overnight a batch of ‘em to California?)

A Last Goodbye

by Miss Cellania

The Ambulance Wish Foundation is a Dutch organization that helps bedridden terminal patients take trips they would not otherwise be able to make. Patients ask to visit their grandchildren, see museums, old homes or workplaces, or places with good memories attached to them. The organization is getting worldwide attention for this photograph of a patient’s visit to the zoo.

The man, Mario (patient last name withheld), is a 54-year-old volunteer who worked with the Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands for years. He has been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor and had one wish: To say goodbye to the animals he had cared for.

The animals, especially this giraffe, were glad to see Mario, too. You can see more photographs and read more stories from the Ambulance Wish Foundation at their Facebook page.

Crocheted Sail Cozy

by John Farrier
Shainaf87

lol what?

Katie Bradley says that she has a tortaddiction. That means that she’s “addicted to caring for and rehabilitating tortoises.” She loves them so much that she crochets little cozies to keep them warm and fashionable. We’ve previously featured her superhero and food-themed cozies.

Now she’s getting into snails. Last July, she added some insulation to the home of this little mollusc.

And here’s a delightful Christmas-themed tortoise cozy that I missed. For next Christmas, she should make one that lights up. Click here to see another that looks like a Santa Claus hat and one that looks like a reindeer.

American Horror Story Writer Totally CONFIRMS Season 4 Will Be About A Carnival! Get The Deets HERE!

by Perez Hilton

Seems like the rumors might actually be correct!

American Horror Story writer Douglas Petrie might've spilled the beans back in February about the setting for the show's fourth installment, which is great and all...

But we're totally buggin' that NO ONE found this interview until now!

Fans created posters and GIFs (like the one above) of creepy carnival and circus art towards the end of the Coven season--- so it's really AH-Mazing that the diehard AHS peeps might've been spot on this entire time!

In a Nerdist News podcast that was said to be recorded on February 16, Douglas revealed that a carnival/circus setting is totally the idea they're running with:

"Yes, it does not have a title… but that is the idea. That’s very roughly the idea.”

Now that the setting is sort of behind us---how will this theme tie into the clues that were dropped in season 3?!

We know the show will be taking place in the 1950s, communists were mentioned, and Jessica Lange is working on her German accent...

So will she be a secret spy ring leader of sorts??

We can't get too excited though, because the show's creator Ryan Murphy hasn't tweeted or confessed to anything about season 4 just yet!

Hopefully we'll get the announcement we've all been craving when the entire cast reunites for their PaleyFest panel later this week!

C'mon Ryan!

In shadow of 'Chicagoland,' real Chicagoans tell it like it is

by Chris Jones
It takes time to create a television documentary, and filmmakers Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin have said they spent much of a year amassing 1,000 hours of video to make their CNN true-crime documentary "Chicagoland." So America currently is discovering, in its family rooms, many of the 2013 horrors that Chicago is trying to forget: the brutal fight over the decision to close underperforming schools, where the rhetoric almost seemed to mirror the violence under discussion; the murder of teenager Hadiya Pendleton; the terror of kids crossing lines in a fractured gangland where the ownership of fiercely defended turfs can change with the block.

Reuben Sandwich Cone

by John Farrier

The Reuben sandwich is the world's greatest sandwich. It is heaven between two slices of bread, which is perhaps why my French Toast Reuben Nutella Elvis Sandwich was such a hit.

The finest Reuben that I've eaten was about 15 years ago at a now-defunct restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama known as The Oven. It was naughtily served on pumpernickel, not rye, and was roughly the size of a regulation football. It is a precious memory that I shall carry with me for the rest of my life. Reubens are great and this was the greatest among them.

There is one problem challenge to eating a Reuben. A well-made Reuben will inevitably spill out its contents as you eat it. Eating a Reuben is messy. So Nick Chipman of Dude Foods devised this brilliant variation.

Because it's served in a cone, Nick's Reuben sandwich makes less of a mess. He made the cone by pressing rye bread around a cone form, then baking the bread in an oven for 10 minutes. Then Nick filled it with the traditional ingredients of a Reuben: corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island salad dressing.

Double Decker Mac & Cheese Stuffed Bacon Weave Taco

by John Farrier

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing. That’s apparently the philosophy of Nick Chipman of Dude Foods. He’s already invented the bacon weave taco. Now it’s time to push the boundaries of that idea beyond all reason and good taste. Hence this creation.

Nick was goaded into creating the Double Decker Mac & Cheese Stuffed Bacon Weave Taco at the behest of a television show in Milwaukee. The producers wanted him to make something new that would terrify their audience. So he made a large bacon weave taco shell and stuffed it with macaroni and cheese. Nick writes:

So where do I take the Bacon Weave Taco from here? I honestly have no idea. At this point I think that it will be pretty much impossible to top the Double Decker Mac & Cheese Stuffed Bacon Weave Taco, but who knows.

The obvious next step would be to deep fry the entire thing.

Bitman Begins

by Miss Cellania

(YouTube link)

Working on the premise that feature films of the future will be based on internet memes more often than books, Jimmy Kimmel Live! put together a trailer for a blockbuster movie based on the hit video Charlie Bit My Finger. Chris Hemsworth and Liam Hemsworth star as the brothers, with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep added to make sure the film would be in contention for an Oscar. It could happen. It beats basing movies on board games.

Another parody trailer is based on two viral videos: David After Dentist and Double Rainbow. You can see that one at Viral Viral Videos.
