The Frustrating Sculptures of Fabian Bürgy

by John Farrier

Do you ever feel like parts of your life were intentionally designed to go wrong? Fabian Bürgy knows your pain. He's a Swiss artist who lives in Bern. Bürgy takes ordinary objects and subjects them to a "slightly violent and disturbing process of transformation, misplacement and dysfunction of things." The results are exaggerated expressions of the frustration that we experience.

Other sculptures by Bürgy are also striking. Here is the Metronome of Death, ticking away time with the scythe of the Grim Reaper.

Here is Breathe, an anthropomorphized bellows pump that is always struggling to do precisely that.

As Much of the World Frowns on Israel, Americans Hold Out Support

by By HELENE COOPER and SOMINI SENGUPTA
The failures of the Arab Spring to spread democracy in the Middle East have left many in America more inclined to side with Israel, which has lost backing elsewhere, analysts say.

9-Year-Old Boy Marries 62-Year-Old Woman To Please Dead Ancestors

by Anomaly100

A 9-year-old boy married a 62-year-old woman again to appease his dead ancestors, in a coupling that has stunned villagers in South Africa. Sanele Masilela, 9, married Helen Shabangu, 62, for the second time, after marrying her last year as part of a ritual, according to the Daily Mirror.

Masilela said he was visited by dead ancestors who told him to wed Shabangu, who is a mother of five children.

They say they married again to make it “official.”

Villagers in Ximhungwe in Mpumalanga, South Africa described the marriage as “sickening”.

The ceremony took place in front of Helen’s long-term husband Alfred Shabangu, 66, who attended the previous ceremony last year as well.

Sanele said he still plans to marry a woman his own age when he is older.

“I’m very happy that the boy chose me and my family support and understand that it is part of making ancestors happy,” Shabangu said. “One day Sanele would grow normally and have family of his own and get married one day, all this ceremony is for making ancestors happy. We are playing.”

“When I’m older I will marry a lady my own age. I chose Helen because I love her and, although we don’t live together all the time, we meet at the dumping site where my mother works regularly,” the young groom said.

It sounds like dead ancestors had nothing to do with this terrible decision.

According to what Sanele’s family believes, if they chose not to wed to please their ancestors, something bad would have happened to the family.

54 Historic Photographs Colorized

by Miss Cellania

Artists have been tinting black and white photographs for decades, as far back as 100 years ago. But modern techniques and the artists who know how to use them make old photographs more believable in color than ever before! This photo of samurai warriors in training was taken around 1860, but the color is so good it might be mistaken for a Hollywood recreation. It was colorized by Jordan J. Loyd of Dynamichrome. You’ll see artful coloring of 53 other historic images by various artists and technicians at Inspire52. -Thanks, SparkS!

Madeleine Albright: Israel Is ‘Overdoing’ It

by Alan

The former Secretary of State told Wolf Blitzer that Israel is “overdoing” it in Gaza.

“I do think the point has to be made, if rockets are being shot at Israel, that Israel does have a right to defend itself,” Albright said. “But the bottom line is the question of proportionality.”

Blitzer singled out her use of the word “proportionality,” asking Albright if she believes Israelis are “overreacting to the provocation” from Hamas. “Are they going too far when you use the word proportionality?” he asked.

“I do think it’s very hard to watch the number of Palestinians that are being killed, innocents. It is hard to dispute the fact that, as Prime Minister Netanyahu has said, that, in fact, there are innocents being put in the way in order to act as shields,” she said. “But the bottom line is, I think that this is hurting Israel’s moral authority. I do think that it looks as though they are overdoing, which is why I think there has to be more emphasis on the fact that they have accepted the cease-fire.”

The Purge: Anarchy Coming to Halloween Horror Nights

by Rick West
Shainaf87

have to go!

Purge Anarchy scarezone HHN imageAs the gates to “Halloween Horror Nights” open, so too does the annual Purge begin at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with the debut of a terrifying new scarezone, “The Purge: Anarchy,” inspired by Universal Pictures’ new thriller, which scored the highest opening for a horror film this year.

“The Purge: Anarchy” scarezone will greet guests with pure unadulterated fear, bringing to life the turmoil and pandemonium that awaits those vulnerable to masked vigilantes in search of new victims. Reimagining the movie’s premise that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal, the scarezone will be inhabited by average citizens transformed into sadistic felons during this period of government-sanctioned lawlessness. Like civilians in the movie fighting to survive, guests will be at the mercy of cunning wit, luck and speed as they attempt to outsmart and outlive the anarchy brought about by those who believe in an “eye for an eye.”

The Purge: Anarchy, the sequel to last summer’s surprise hit, moves from the confines of a suburban neighborhood to the streets as the government begins its annual 12-hour Purge to ensure that the crime rate stays below one percent for the rest of the year. With all emergency services suspended, it’s the one night when society regulates itself without thought of punishment or fear of retribution. For average people who do not have the means to barricade themselves indoors with a state-of-the-art security system, anarchy rules and no one is safe. In this new story, an unlikely group of five citizens discover how far they will go to protect themselves and, ultimately, each other, as they fight to survive a dangerous night fraught with impossible decisions.

From director and writer James DeMonaco (The Purge, Assault on Precinct 13), The Purge: Anarchy stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Carmen Ejogo (Away We Go), Zach Gilford (Devil’s Due), Kiele Sanchez (A Perfect Getaway) and Michael K. Williams (The Wire).

“‘Halloween Horror Nights’ is about taking guests out of their comfort zones and placing them at the core of unimaginable horror,” said John Murdy, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Creative Director for and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “Because the premise of ‘The Purge’ could theoretically happen, our scare-zone elevates that sense of fear and forces you to really watch your back. Imagining how your neighbor, friend or enemy could take revenge on you without retribution because you wronged them takes horror to a whole new level, and we wanted to bring that gut-wrenching terror to every one of our guests.”

“‘The Purge’” scarezone will invade the streets of ‘Halloween Horror Nights’, taking up most of our New York back lot. The chaos that reigns in the film will be replicated nightly, but now our guests can actually attempt to survive the night themselves,” said Michael Aiello, Director of Entertainment – Creative Development, Universal Orlando Resort. “The familiar emergency broadcast will be heard announcing the commencement of the annual Purge, and all hell will literally break loose.”

Universal Studios’ “Halloween Horror Nights” events have a more than 20-year history of creating incredibly entertaining, horrifying Halloween experiences that are consistently rated the nation’s best. The events on each coast feature highly-themed, disturbingly real, haunted mazes based on everything from films to nightmares – and streets filled with hundreds of specially trained “scareactors” in uniquely themed scare-zones. In addition to “The Purge: Anarchy,” other announced experiences include, “The Walking Dead: The End of the Line,” “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “Face Off: In the Flesh.”

To complement its numerous mazes, “Halloween Horror Nights” features a variety of terrifying scare-zones designed to provoke heart-pounding fear as guests traverse the park from one traumatizing experience to the next, unsure of what lies just around the corner.

Updates on “Halloween Horror Nights” at Universal Studios Hollywood are available online at HalloweenHorrorNights.com/Hollywood and on Facebook at: “Halloween Horror Nights – Hollywood,” on Instagram at @HorrorNights and Twitter at @HorrorNights as Creative Director John Murdy reveals a running chronicle of exclusive information. Tickets and vacation packages for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando are on sale now at HalloweenHorrorNights.com\Orlando. More information about the event will be available soon. Updates on Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights are available on Facebook at Halloween Horror Nights – Universal Orlando and on Instagram at @HorrorNightsORL. Plus, fans can get exclusive updates from Creative Development Director Mike Aiello on Twitter at @HorrorNightsORL.

Trompe-l'œil Animal Murals by Fiona Tang

by Lisa Marcus

Vancouver-based artist Fiona Tang uses charcoal, chalk pastel and acrylics as her media to create these virbant murals that appear to be three dimensional at certain viewing angles. Tang achieves this effect using the ages-old artistic technique called trompe-l'œil (French for "deceive the eye"), which produces the optical illusion of third dimensionality.

See more of Tang's work on her Tumblr site and on Facebook.

Testing the Limits of TGI Friday’s Endless Appetizers

by Miss Cellania

The restaurant chain TGI Friday’s unveiled a promotion called “Endless Appestizers,” in which you pay $10 and eat as many appetizers as you want (at participating locations only). Caity Weaver at Gawker decided to push the envelope and see if the restaurant could live up to that claim. She had incentives: her boss promised a week off if she could keep it up until 1AM, and a colleague offered cash for the mozzarella sticks she ate over 30. It was not easy. You can only select one kind of appetizer for the promotion, so she selected mozzarella sticks, and quickly regretted that decision.

1:40 p.m. Even if I ate 1000 sticks, TGI Friday's Endless Apps would be a bad deal, because they taste worse than eating nothing at all. TGI Friday's should pay me $10 to clear out as many of these mozzarella sticks for them as I can. TGI Friday's End This App(s).

1:42 p.m. Gabby catches me guzzling water like Joey Chestnut to get my hastily chewed mozzarella sticks down. "Haha!" she laughs from a couple tables away. "I'm coming to check on you!" While the water trick makes me feel like I'm about to throw up every time I swallow a bite of mozzarella stick, it does help to mask the taste. For this reason, I consider it superior to eating the mozzarella sticks normally.

1:45 p.m. I ask Gabby if she's had the mozzarella sticks, and what does she think of them? She tells me "They're good." Gabby and I are not yet good enough friends that we can be honest with one another.

And that’s with 11 hours to go! Weaver tries to adjust by eating the dreaded mozzarella sticks as slowly as possible, but boredom becomes problem. Her notes become weird.

9:23 p.m. I keep thinking I hear people say "Caity." I write down in my notebook that I am "definitely hallucinating."

I put my head near the table to write more and the scent of old marinara and burnt rubber fills my nostrils. I sit back up.

Will Weaver make it to 1AM? Will she receive her rewards? How many mozzarella sticks can one person really eat? Read the entire story at Gawker. -via Neetzan Zimmerman

PS: The endless appetizers promotion is $10 per person, so a group is not supposed to share an order.

Girl Left Contacts In For Six Months, Amoebas Ate Her Eyeball

by Zeon Santos

Contact lens wearers know the risks that come with placing that little piece of plastic directly on to their eyeballs, and cleanliness is king when it comes to keeping your eyes healthy, which means taking your contacts out, and disinfecting them, on a daily basis.

Here's an example of why it's important to take them out daily- Taiwanese college student Lian Kao left a pair of contact lenses in for six months, which allowed a microorganism called acanthamoeba to move in beneath the lens.

Acanthamoeba feeds on bacteria, not human tissue, but her eyes were already home to tons of bacteria from leaving the lenses in for so long, so as the acanthamoeba fed on the bacteria it burrowed further into her eyeball to keep feeding on bacteria, which left her blind. *shivers*

Her condition is called acanthamoebic keratitis, which can occur from not properly disinfecting your contact lenses, so take a lesson from Lian and disinfect your contacts daily!

Dolly Parton: I Want To Do A Dance Album

by Joe Jervis
Via Digital Spy:
Dolly Parton has revealed that she would like to work on a dance anthem. The country singer spoke about her gay following during a press conference last week, saying that she hopes her fans "relate" to her more than her music, but added she wants to work on some more upbeat anthems. "At some point I would like to do a dance record and I have several songs that are very positive towards the gay community," Parton said. "I have a song called 'Just A Wee Bit Gay'. It's a great little dance tune, it's funny and it's got a lot of comic in it. "I do write a lot of songs along those lines with people that are different and are just themselves."
In 1978 Parton's hit Baby I'm Burnin' reached #15 on Billboard's dance chart. The 12" was on pink vinyl. (Tipped by JMG reader Rob)
