As Seen At Trader EscarJoe’s

by Brinke

“This little guy was attached to the plastic wrap of a bouquet of flowers at Trader Joe’s. I got him off the wrapping and he instantly came out of his shell then proceeded to snail around my hand and my friend’s hand!” -Leigh Z. (Who also came up with the headline after some prompting!)

New Toilet Paper Roll Art by Anastassia Ellias

by Tom

Paris-based artist Annastassia Elias (previously here) continues to amaze with her intricate toilet paper art, which she recently published as a book titled Rouleaux. Anastassia who usually works in the fields of painting and illustration started this unusual project a couple of years ago, and now it has almost become her signature.

“One day I looked at an empty roll and wondered if I can do something with it,” says the artist.

Each piece takes up to few hours to complete because of the small scale of the project.

“I use tweezers to manipulate the paper shapes. I select the paper of the same color as the roll. It gives the illusion that the paper figures make part of the roll,” says Elias. Check out some of her new creations below!

Battle-Ready Disney Princesses

by Geek Girl Diva

disney-warrior-princesses-1

Artist Mike Roshuk has a pretty unique take on Disney Princesses. Beautiful and badass. Sure, the armor may be useless in actual battle, but Disney Princesses have small woodland creatures and fairly godmothers to help in a pinch, right?

Also, the tiger with Jasmine is frickin’ gorgeous and I want one.

Check out more pics after the break.

Twist-Off Wine Cork Invented; Mankind Can Finally Rest

by David Ponce

helix-twist-off-cork

Buying a regular screw-top wine bottle can mean a number of things in some circles: 1) you have no appreciation of good wine; 2) you are cheap; 3) you are an efficient drinker (read: alcoholic). Overplayed (and possibly inaccurate) stereotypes aside, there’s a stigma to metal screw-tops that’s only redeemed by the typically lower cost of the wine they contain. It’s an often difficult choice at the liquor store, a tradeoff between class and pice. But the Helix cork pictured above could bridge that gap. In testing for about four years, the product is a result of a collaboration between “cork manufacturer Amorim and those at bottle-making company O-I. The new threaded, resealable design (and matching threaded bottle neck) is aimed at the “popular premium” wine market, which includes bottles that retail for between $8-$15, roughly.” Yes, this does mean these types of new corks will only work with matching bottles, since the grooves must fit in the treads to create a tight seal. You do, however, end up with an easily resealable bottle of wine, sold at a reasonable price, that doesn’t come with the common stigma of metal screw-tops.

And why spend 4 years testing a cork? Well, the companies were making sure the “agglomerated cork” material used didn’t end up affecting the taste, colour or aroma of the wine. It doesn’t. And even though the product was unveiled yesterday at the Vinexpo in Bordeaux, it’s going to be a couple of years before you see it in shelves.

As we end the work week, here is a very sound piece of advice from comedian Whitney Cummings.

Before you marry a person you should first make them use a computer with slow Internet to see who they truly are.

Modern Mantra: Room Drawings Made Out of Names of the Objects

by Ieva

Thomas Broome from Malmo, Sweden, uses words to build rooms: the artist employs typography and shapes various objects by repeatedly writing the names of these objects. In Thomas’ pen and ink series, called Modern Mantra, objects like bed is drawn by writing “bed” multiple times, and perspective is achieved by altering the size of the letters. Through these 18 text illustrations, Thomas tries to convey the message about how deeply rooted the brands and the logos are in our lives, and how much this phenomena objectives life. Check out his detailed illustrations below!

The differences between a geek and a nerd

by Nathan Yau

Geek vs nerd

Curious about how people use "geek" and "nerd" to describe themselves and if there was any difference between the two terms, Burr Settles analyzed words used in tweets that contained the two. Settles used pointwise mutual information (PMI), which essentially provided a measure of the geekness or nerdiness of a term. The plot above shows the results.

In broad strokes, it seems to me that geeky words are more about stuff (e.g., “#stuff”), while nerdy words are more about ideas (e.g., “hypothesis”). Geeks are fans, and fans collect stuff; nerds are practitioners, and practitioners play with ideas. Of course, geeks can collect ideas and nerds play with stuff, too. Plus, they aren’t two distinct personalities as much as different aspects of personality. Generally, the data seem to affirm my thinking.

Or maybe pop culture (geek) versus education (nerd).

44 images of the Great Barrier Reef

by Scott Sporleder

A natural wonder of the world, stretching more than 1,600 miles, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest organically formed structure. Last month, after years of dreaming about it, I had the opportunity to dive the reef and come face to face with some of the most beautiful underwater landscapes I’ve ever seen.

The experience has a way of spontaneously filling memory cards. In that spirit, here are 44 images I took during my time on the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

[Note: Scott's visit to the GBR was sponsored by Tourism and Events Queensland. Learn more about Queensland on their blog.]

1

Welcome to the Great Barrier Reef

1,600 miles long, 133,000 square miles in area, comprising 3,000+ individual reefs and islands, and home to thousands of species.
2

Nemo

Finding Nemo is one of the first things you want to do when you dive the Great Barrier Reef. Around the world, these poor fish have probably been extremely confused as to why, for the past 10 years, everyone has been getting in their face for a photo.
3

The Cod Hole

The Cod Hole is a special dive site that gives access to the giant potato cod. This friendly fish likes to get extremely close to divers, and oftentimes you can see them looking at their reflection in your goggles.
4

Up close

Did I mention these guys get really close? They can grow up to 110kg and over 8.5 feet long.
5

Marine life

Some of the beautiful underwater life of the GBR, including sharks and an absolute abundance of tropical fish.
6

Photo-op

The GBR is a photographer's dream, and those who come don't mess around with the gear they bring.
7

Steve's Bommie

This coral spire shoots up to within a few feet of the ocean's surface and is covered with fish.
8

Snorkeling

There are a couple good places to go for a scenic swim on the GBR…just a couple.
9

The reef

A shot of the reef from above. Apart from a scattering of islands, most of the reef comes to within just a few feet of the water's surface, as seen here.
10

Solar eclipse

On my second day on the dive boat, there was an annular solar eclipse. The rest of the passengers and I sat outside and handed around eclipse glasses to watch. I snapped away and was lucky enough to capture an image just as a cloud passed by and the moon and sun once again exposed themselves to us.
11

Spoilsport

The Spoilsport, the exclusive dive boat of Mike Ball Dive Expeditions, isn't a bad place to spend a week on the GBR.
12

Big-eye jack

A school of big-eye jack fish beneath the Spoilsport.
13

Dive time

Down we go, to another adventure at the bottom of the sea.
14

Coral

There seemed to be no limit to the number of colors and size variations of the coral of the GBR.
15

Standard scene

A lionfish scans for food while a giant turtle perches on top of a coral shelf above…another typical dive.
16

Coral

Various coral textures and sea anemones
17

Cod

Another encounter with the massive potato cod.
18

Kiss

Here's a shot of me trying to go all the way -- I did my best to get a kiss but she wasn't having any of it.
19

Triggerfish

A species of triggerfish making its way around the reef.
20

Hypercolor

The bold colors of the reef.
21

Above surface

Another view of the Great Barrier Reef from above the waterline.
22

Sunset

Divers take a minute to relax after another beautiful day of diving.
23

Spoiled

Life on the Spoilsport consists of: nibbling on kangaroo, listening to Captain Trevor serenade us, and closing it all out with the daily homemade dessert…you can get used to life out on the reef.
24

Anyone for a night swim?

At night, sharks gathered at the back of the boat, making the evening dip ever so alluring.
25

Coral fan

Another typical underwater scene.
26

Fish

The colors of the fish on the reef are insane; everywhere you look there's another fluorescent specimen swimming by.
27

Snorkeling

I'm sorry, did I mention the Great Barrier Reef has a few good spots to go for a swim? Can't recall if I did or not?
28

Cuttlefish

I watched this cuttlefish change colors repeatedly right in front of me. Its spots would turn dark and then glow like they were lit from behind.
29

Rainbow

One afternoon, while on the top deck of the boat, I turned to see a complete rainbow in front of me.
30

Lizard Island

Lizard island is one of the few islands on the Great Barrier Reef that has any infrastructure. With a luxury resort and some beautiful beaches, it wasn't a bad place to stop for the day.
31

Sunset

Just imagine this scene replaying itself every day.
32

Butterfly fish

A butterfly fish swims around some coral.
33

Above and below

34

Light rays

I really like this image, where you can see the sun's rays shooting towards the bottom of the sea while they're met by the bubbles of the divers already below.
35

Dive time

Down you go!
36

Chilling

This guy was the ultimate chiller. He's the same turtle from the image with the lionfish (#15). I spent a few minutes trying to take some shots of him, and he had this look like, "Enough with the photos already, trying to sleep here, aright?"
37

Stick together

Various types of fish move about in their schools.
38

Coral

So much love gets thrown on the fish, when in actuality it's the coral and the reef that make all this marine life possible.
39

Lizard Island

40

Sunset

Another evening on the GBR.
41

Nemo

Again…I had to.
42

Framed

43

Mr. Cod

Cruising by some divers.
44

Snorkeling

Last but not least…the Great Barrier Reef is a pretty damn good place to go for a little swim.

The ultimate Ireland road trip

by Scott Sporleder

FOR ME, the real Ireland is on the back roads. That’s the green isle I envision when I close my eyes, winding around its rocky coastline on tiny lanes lined with centuries-old stone fences. And that’s exactly what my fellow MatadorU faculty member Candice Walsh and I did this spring on a quest to uncover her Irish heritage.

For nearly two weeks we made our way across the southern coast, bobbing and weaving through tiny hillside towns all the way to County Sligo. What follows is a photo-album-worth of images from the trip.

[Note: Scott and Candice's visit was sponsored by Tourism Ireland.]

1

It seemed as if everywhere we went in Ireland, we were met with charming stores and beautifully designed signs.
