Before & After: Saving a Grand Old House in Texas

Welcome to Day One of “Before & After Week.” I love a good makeover and thought it would be fun to devote all 5 days to them. First up, take a look at the historic Cartwright House in Terrell, Texas. It was built in 1883 and needed a lot of love (and work) by the time homeowners Tom and Nancy Aldridge bought it. Check out how it looks now:
Gorgeous. Nancy told Houzz, “There isn’t a day that goes by without someone stopping to take a photograph of the house. It makes me feel so proud.”
I can see why it attracts so many lookiloos. I’d be braking for it, too!
Here’s a peek inside the 7,000 square-foot home:
They bought it with much of the original furniture inside.
“We knew the restoration was going to take a lot of work, so we hired an architect, Ron Hobbs, and a contractor, David Mauk,” Nancy says. “They made a presentation to the state, and our plans were approved.”
Interior designer Pat Ratcliff to help choose appropriate historical colors for the house. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen’s Book-Filled Guest House

Actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen say they needed a small guest house on their property in Ojai, California, as a place to not only host friends and family, but to write and rehearse scripts. They hired architect Chantal Dussouchaud to design it for them, and here’s how it turned out…
Love that garden gate that leads to the guest house.
“Because everything we do begins with a written word, whether it is acting or writing music, we wanted a space that pays homage to writing,” Steenburgen told Houzz. “Movies are rehearsed here, songs are written — we wanted it to be a place that breeds creativity.”
The front room has floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves.
They furnished the 1,000 square-foot house with pieces from Steenburgen’s store Rooms & Gardens.
The kitchen is small but functional for overnight guests.
It has 2 bedrooms and 1 bath.
