Gamers outshine computers in crowdsourced RNA modeling

by Heidi Hoopes

In the game EteRNA, players are asked to solve puzzles that predict how RNA will fold once...

Results from the crowdsourced game and experiment, EteRNA, which combines RNA folding puzzles with laboratory synthesis, show that human gamers are able to develop better models of RNA folding than previous computer algorithms. Design rules formulated by the online community have even been used to construct a new algorithm, EteRNABot, and in some cases represent completely new understandings about RNA folding that have yet to be explained mechanically... Is This New York’s Smelliest Pizza?

by Hugh Merwin

Jingle bells, this pizza smells. Also, Robin probably laid an egg — somewhere.

In the summer of 2011, Molly Young wrote a piece for New York anointing the stretch of Broome Street between Allen and Eldridge as the city's smelliest. Comically, the block was alive with renegade and offensive odors: Warm giblets, 1,000 damp dogs, recycled fryer oil, human pee. Things like that, all combining to produce an olfactory rush compared, at the time, to a “flushed-out catacomb." These days, the festering poultry plant at 284 Broome is gone and things seem to have improved, but new neighbor Williamsburg Pizza wanted to reference that bygone era anyway, so pie-maker Nino Coniglio came up with the smelliest pizza he could think of that still tasted good. The shop calls it, with affection, the Broome & Allen.

Coniglio worked out a few different flavor combinations and formats before hitting on this one: round crust, Taleggio, roasted grapes, crushed hazelnuts. It's yeasty, ripe, sweet, and nutty; arugula and frisee add some green to the mix, and the whole thing is baptized with truffle oil and honey before being pushed out onto the Lower East Side streets. (Fresh mozzarella is used to bind the Taleggio to the crust, and there may be one or two phantom smudges of blue-veined Gorgonzola melted onto the pie's surface, too.)

The result is over-the-top and visually busy. It smells ... good. It's not the garbage plate of NYC-themed pie toppings it could have been; it's much more like the Garbage Pail Kids of New York pizza, a kind of parody that happens to be catchy. (RIP, Cheesy Charlie.)

The Broome & Allen is not sold at the original Williamsburg Pizza in Brooklyn. On the Lower East Side, it goes for $3.50 a slice and $27 for the pie. It really doesn't smell that bad.

Google Hangouts Unifies Photos, Video, and Chat in one Standalone App

by Alan Henry

Google took the wraps off of a new Google Hangouts app at Google I/O today, one that makes it easy to connect with any of your Google+ circles or Google contacts. The app puts photos, chats with friends and family, and video conversations at your fingertips on Android, iOS, and the web.

The new Google Hangouts app brings the popular chat feature out of Google+ exclusively and makes it available on any device as well as the web. Photos and chats are easy to browse and save through the app, and one tap gives you a gallery of all of the photos you and your contacts have shared. You'll see live animations as people are typing and posting, and messages are grouped together so a conversation flows naturally across all participants, instead of a disjointed group of back and forth messages.

The app also seamlessly includes video chats, and with a single tap you can start a group video chat with everyone in your conversation, regardless of the device they're using. Hangouts will be available today for iOS and Android, and on the web it'll still be a core component of Google+. Best of all, all of the video chats, messages, and photo sharing is completely free.
