Put A Korky In It

by Sean O'Hara

The term “builders’ grade” is often slapped on a piece of hardware you’re almost sure wouldn’t pass muster any other way new, much less after 6 or 7 years. Apparently such a term was appropriate for the riser in my toilet, which split for no reason this weekend and flooded the bathroom. I returned from the home center with a Korky brand valve.

It wasn’t really more expensive than the cheap crap I was going to put back in it. It was mere nine dollars instead of the seven-dollar kit I was used to, but the difference was astounding. The first thing you might notice is there’s no ball float. The Korky 528 fill valve (pictured) is a twist-and-lock action anti-siphon valve that adjusts by rotating the head a quarter turn, moving it to the correct height, and rotating it back to lock it.

The whole thing installs in less than five minutes like any other riser valve, but the feature that’s worth the extra two dollars (and more, really) is that it fills quickly and almost silently. Korky says it will last longer as well, but the quiet flush is really worth it.

After hearing how quiet it was and how much easier it is to fit correctly, I’m switching the other can to this system even though there’s nothing wrong with it. For nine bucks, why not?

Bold asteroid-snatching plans to appear in NASA 2014 budget

by Lee Hutchinson
Gotcha! Keck Institute for Space Studies

Aviation Week is carrying the news that NASA's FY2014 budget will include a $100 million line item to start planning a robotic mission to snatch an asteroid and relocate it to near the Moon, where it could be studied up-close by NASA—and possibly even visited by astronauts (hat-tip to the Houston Chronicle's SciGuy blog for the news).

The idea is based on a report by the Keck Institute for Space Studies, which outlines an entire robotic mission to locate and retrieve an NEA—a Near Earth Asteroid—of about 500,000kg in mass and a diameter of about 7 meters. Such an asteroid would be a C-type or carbonaceous asteroid, and would have the consistency of "a dried mudball." The asteroid would be hauled back via a robotic probe and positioned in an orbit above the far side of the Moon at the second Earth-Moon Lagrange Point, where the vagaries of gravity and inertia would keep the asteroid in a roughly consistent location. Once positioned there, the asteroid would—at least in theory—be within the range of a manned visit.

To go out and grab the asteroid in the first place, the report recommends a probe weighing about 18,000 kg, which could be lofted into space using an existing launch vehicle (such as an Atlas V). Shifting 500,000 kg of mass with conventional rockets would require a tremendous amount of propellant to be carried along with the probe so, rather than chemical rockets, the probe would be equipped with a "~40-kW solar electric propulsion system with a specific impulse of 3,000 s."

Bullseye from 1,000 yards: Shooting the $17,000 Linux-powered rifle

by Lee Hutchinson
1000 yards is a long, long way away. Steven Michael

My photographer, Steve, squints through a computerized scope squatting atop a big hunting rifle. We're outdoors at a range just north of Austin, Texas, and the wind is blowing like crazy—enough so that we're having to dial in more and more wind adjustment on the rifle's computer. The spotter and I monitor Steve's sight through an iPad linked to the rifle via Wi-Fi, and we can see exactly what he's seeing through the scope. Steve lines up on his target downrange—a gently swinging metal plate with a fluorescent orange circle painted at its center—and depresses a button to illuminate it with the rifle's laser.

"Good tag?" he asks, softly.

"Good tag," replies the spotter, watching on the iPad. He leaves the device in my hands and looks through a conventional high-powered spotting scope at the target Steve has selected. The wind stops momentarily. "Send it," he calls out.

Eye of Sauron Desk Lamp

by Edwin

All right, I know that yesterday was April Fool’s day, and we sure as heck covered our fair share of crazy gizmos that will never see the light of day (or will they? We shudder at the thought), so while we are in full swing where April 2nd is concerned, here is my last take for April Fool’s this year – with the $299.99 Eye of Sauron Desk Lamp, of course.

This is one idea that would definitely score points with fanboys should it be released to the masses, but unfortunately, as of right now, it will remain within the figments of one’s imagination, just like the fantasy storyline that the building itself is based on. The Eye of Sauron Desk Lamp is touted to be an exact model of Barad-dûr, the Fortress of Sauron, where it has been expertly recreated from the movie, all the way down to the finest detail. The roving eye will continue to make sure you give your best at work, and this thing, without an eyelid, sure as heck is creepy! No way Incognito mode on your Chrome browser is going to let you off the hook now when it comes to visiting questionable websites while you are at work.

Amazon paid $150 million for Goodreads

Amazon paid $150 million for GoodreadsAccording to ATD, Amazon actually paid $150 million for Goodreads, one of the most popular book review/recommendation services on the Internet.

Original reports had placed the purchase at closer to $100 million. Additionally, the deal could go as high as $200 million if a few important performance metrics are hit.

Goodreads had raised $3 million from angel investors, meaning those investors have cashed out large.

"Amazon and Goodreads share a passion for reinventing reading," said Russ Grandinetti, Amazon Vice President, Kindle Content, during the announcement. "Goodreads has helped change how we discover and discuss books and, with Kindle, Amazon has helped expand reading around the world. In addition, both Amazon and Goodreads have helped thousands of authors reach a wider audience and make a better living at their craft. Together we intend to build many new ways to delight readers and authors alike."

"Books – and the stories and ideas captured inside them – are part of our social fabric," said Otis Chandler, Goodreads CEO and co-founder. "People love to talk about ideas and share their passion for the stories they read. I'm incredibly excited about the opportunity to partner with Amazon and Kindle. We're now going to be able to move faster in bringing the Goodreads experience to millions of readers around the world. We're looking forward to inspiring greater literary discussion and helping more readers find great books, whether they read in print or digitally."

HBO: 'Game of Thrones' piracy does not hurt us at all

Wmy2k7

Well how about THAT?!

HBO: 'Game of Thrones' piracy does not hurt us at allHBO programming president Michael Lombardo has made comments this weekend that other media companies would do well to listen to.

The executive claims that the massive amount of piracy for their hit show, Game of Thrones, does not hurt DVD/Blu-ray sales at all, and is actually a compliment.

It was recently revealed that each episode of the show sees over 4.3 million illegal downloads, making it the most-pirated TV show in the world, beating out perennial faves like 'Dexter.'

"I probably shouldn't be saying this, but it is a compliment of sorts," adds Lombardo (via Freak). "[Piracy is] something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network." When asked if consumers are still going out to buy the discs, Lombardo replied, "The demand is there. And it certainly didn't negatively impact the DVD sales."

Is your dog a total “dog”? So asks this billboard spotted in Los Angeles, purportedly offering canine plastic surgery from one Dr. Steven Armond. It turns out it’s a promotion for Kroll Show, an upcoming sketch-comedy show on Comedy Central starring Nick Kroll. Similar ads have been seen on the New York City subway, where they take on a real Dr. Zizmor glow.

This nation is closer to a Civil War than it has been since 1861.

by Jim Copenhaver

civilwar2This nation is closer to a Civil War than it has been since 1861.

Scary thought, isn’t it? Especially to those who have seen war and know from  personal experience what it is like. If you are older than 35, would you ever have dreamed that one day, in our lifetimes, our country would be reduced to this? Sometimes it makes me want to cry for America. It makes me want to throw a fit and smash things, rage and scream like a wild man. I want to grab my weapons, march to Washington DC, stand up in front of Congress and the president and say, “Now Look, this is the way it is going to be or by God, I will start shooting!”

Kind of childish, isn’t it? I didn’t ask for the crap that is going on today. I don’t want it. I am near 60 years old. All I wanted was to live out the rest of my days in peace. I wanted to live out those days in the America that I knew and loved, where one was safe and didn’t have to worry about what the government was planning to do to you.

So much for that. Life has changed, as it is supposed to. But it is not a good change. It remains to be seen what good can come from this state of affairs. The one thing I do know is that it is up to us . . . each one of us. . . yes, that means you . . . to bring forth whatever good can be found.

I am very proud of the American people. Well, not the democrats and libtards obviously, but the conservatives and the rank and file. Despite this crisis, we have not panicked. We have not run around in circles screaming, “the sky is falling” and wringing our hands. We have not gone off like drunken fools to shoot up DC and impose our will. We have been patient and tried to give our elected officials time to do what is right. We have been preparing, but one can never be prepared enough. And time is getting short.

I earnestly hope and pray that our differences with our government can be settled through peaceful means. I know many are speaking of open rebellion against the government, but I know of no one who wants to overthrow the American system of government, only those people that currently occupy that government. If our differences can not be settled by peaceful means, then I am one who advocates rebellion. Again, time is getting short.

Last night was the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover. For several years I was the guest of some Jewish friends on the first night of Passover.

If you are a Christian, I would highly recommend that you attend a Passover seder if you have the opportunity. There is a lot of symbolic meaning for Christians in the seder that goes back at least 2,000 years before the time of Jesus.

I bring this up because I am reminded of one particular Passover that took place 70 years ago, in 1943 in Warsaw, Poland. There is, quite possibly, no more unequal struggle throughout history.

warsaw-ghetto-uprising-ww2-003It was on the first night of the Seder in 1943 that the Germans began the process of attempting to liquidate the Jewish community which lived in the Warsaw Ghetto. Like many other persecutors throughout history, the Nazis favored assaulting the Jewish people on their holidays. Yet, the Passover spirit proved to be stronger than the Nazis, for the Nazis were not given the easy victory that they had sought. According to the Hagadah, “It is not only one that has risen up against us to destroy us. Rather, in every generation, they rise against us to annihilate us. However, the Holy One, blessed be He, saves us from their hand.”

Thus, in 1943, the Nazis were the ones to “rise against us to annihilate us.”

However, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto, inspired by the Passover story, rose up against the Nazis and demonstrated that a struggling community of half-starved Jews had the power to hold out longer than countries like Poland and France against the Nazis oppressors. “Imbued with the call of Moses, they too declared, ‘Let my people go!’”

“They took up arms, though no one gave them arms. They fought, though no ally fought with them. On this night of Passover, the Jewish birthday of freedom from oppression and slavery, they restored self-defense and power to the Jewish people. Not many of them survived. Thus, on this night, when God watched over us millennia ago, we honor the memory of the young men and women of the Jewish Fighting Organization of the Warsaw Ghetto with a pledge that we will never forget the gift of revolt against tyranny that they bequeathed to us and to all humanity.”

If war against our government does come to us, then let us look to these brave warriors in the Warsaw Ghetto for hope, for inspiration, for courage. Let us follow their example so that all may see that we fought against oppression and slavery. When our story is told around the world, let it be shouted to the heavens that we fought for freedom.

I asked Jim and he allowed me to attach this brief blurb at the end of his article. For those of you who are not aware, we have a group of people preparing for the possibility of things happening as discussed in Jim’s article. There is no doubt that civil unrest is possible in America today and we are simply looking to build a network to be prepared for that possibility. We are not preparing for any offensive acts of aggression but we are getting like-minded people together in case we need to one day respond to these things being thrust upon us. We are not a militia, we are just a team of concerned Americans who want to be prepared if the worst should ever come. Currently we have 10 regional teams with about 18,000 total members and our project is only four days old. As membership grows we will break down into state and local areas. Conn. Baker Sees Outpouring of Support for AR-15 Birthday Cake Called ‘Insensitive’ by Others

by Liz Klimas

In mid-March a Connecticut baker was hired to make a birthday cake. But not just an ordinary yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Elizabeth Mais wanted to give her husband a realist AR-15-themed birthday cake that would be showcased at the local NRA dinner.

The NRA blog reported that Mais hired Jennifer Montalto with Jenny-Lu’s bakery in Middlebury, Conn., for the job after several other bakers simply refused to make the cake she wanted.

(Photo: Jenny-Lu’s/Facebook)

“Jennifer brought my vision to life, creating the most beautiful cake I have ever seen. She truly is a cake artist,” Mais wrote, according to the NRA. “My husband’s reaction when first seeing the cake was Oh my God, that’s a cake? The joy on his face was worth all the aggravation I went through.”

But in the days since the cake featuring a realistic looking AR-15 and a Gadsden flag was presented and photos of it began circulating, Jenny-Lu’s bakery saw some criticism. The Woodbury-Middlebury Patch reported a reviewer on Yelp calling it “insensitive” and said it was “ridiculing the tragedy in Newtown.” This comment and several others appear to have been removed as of April 1 and only positive comments about the bakery remain on the Yelp post.

A photo posted March 15 on Facebook of the cake with more than 2,000 likes, 600 comments and 2,600 shares similarly shows a majority of supportive comments about cake.

Some comments from the Facebook photo.

Montalto talked about her cake on the NRA News radio, saying she got a few “eye rolls” but overall the response was positive:

On the NRA’s blog, Mais explained that she wanted an AR-15 cake because she and her husband “love ARs” and because of the proposed gun bans.

“In light of the ridiculous gun bans proposed here in CT, I thought an AR cake with the Gadsden flag draped over the rifle case was fitting,” Mais wrote. “Both Bill & I strongly oppose any ban that restricts Americans from enjoying the best sporting rifle created. Bill has even testified at the state capital fighting against such restrictions.”

To the Patch, Montalto said she understood why some might have been upset by the cake but noted that she doesn’t involve politics in her baking.

“To each their own — if someone enjoys it, that doesn’t make them an evil person,” she told the Patch. “Don’t make someone out to be evil over a cake.”

Jesus’ Alleged Shroud Makes Extremely-Rare Television Appearance

by Tiffany Gabbay

Shroud of Turin Makes Rare Appearance on Italian TV This Easter

The Shroud of Turin, which some Christians believe to have been Jesus Christ’s burial cloth, made a rare appearance on Italian television screens Easter Saturday.

Pope Francis delivered a video message as part of the broadcast, in which he thanked God for the technological advances that made it possible to share the ”Man of the Shroud” with so many.

“This image, impressed upon the cloth, speaks to our heart,” he said.

“This disfigured face resembles all those faces of men and women marred by a life which does not respect their dignity, by war and violence which afflict the weakest … And yet, at the same time, the face in the Shroud conveys a great peace; this tortured body expresses a sovereign majesty.”

According to Vatican Radio, one of Benedict XVI’s last acts as pope was to authorize the broadcast of the linen cloth from Turin Cathedral. The last time the relic, which bears the image of a man’s body, was broadcasted was in 1973, at the behest of then-Pope Paul VI.

The image on the shroud appears to bear the markings of the crucifixion.

While some scholars contest the shroud’s authenticity and claim it actually dates to the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church does not seem to mind. Rather than insist on the shroud’s authenticity, the Vatican’s official position is that the linen cloth is an important symbol of Christians’ faith.

But new evidence uncovered by researchers at Padua University claim their more recent tests show the cloth does in fact date back to between 280 B.C. and 220 A.D. — meaning it could be placed within Jesus’ lifetime.

“We carried out three alternative dating tests on the shroud, two chemical and one mechanical, and they all gave the same result and they all traced back to the date of Jesus, with a possible margin of error of 250 years,” Fanti told CNN.

In keeping with today’s penchant for technology, an actual “Shroud 2.0″ app was also launched Friday in several languages, allowing users to examine a high-definition image of the shroud and learn more about its history.

Giulio Fanti, professor of mechanical engineering at Padua University and co-author of the book, “The Mystery of the Shroud,” told CNN that the app will be “very useful” to the scientific community.

“I hope the app will give us the chance of having microscopic data that will be very useful to confront different scientific research on the shroud, which, until now, is still a mystery,” he said.

The New FN FNX 45 Review

by Phil White
fn1

The newest addition to the FNX line of pistols is the .45 acp variant. Since it’s introduction at the end of last year it’s shown to be a very popular pistol.

FN offers the FNX45 in a two-tone dark earth polymer frame and matte finish black slide made of stainless steel. The second model has a black polymer frame also with a matte black stainless slide. Another option is a threaded barrel for suppressor use. Of course the sights on this model are high profile.

The controls are fully ambidextrous. This includes the thumb safety, slide release and magazine release. This is a very handy feature for left handed shooters as well as those who practice left handed as well as right. This is always a beneficial practice.

DSC_0290

FN provides a nice addition with three mags shipped with each pistol. Each magazine also holds 15 rounds of .45 acp. These mags are polished nickel coated with a substantially sized polymer bumper pad. The pistol is packed in a large black plastic case with plenty of room.

DSC_0301

Stats:

FNX™-45
• Caliber: .45 ACP
• Operation: DA/SA
• Sights: Fixed 3-Dot
• Magazine Capacity: 15 rounds
• Weight: 33.2 oz. empty
• Width: 1.58″
• Height: 6.3″
• Barrel Length: 4.5″
• Overall Length: 7.4″
• Twist Rate: 1:16″ RH
Made in the USA

FN’s new FNX 45 is a DA/SA design with the usual long first shot trigger pull followed by a very nice single action trigger. The ambidextrous thumb safety serves as both a de-cocker as well as a manual safety like the 1911. The pistol can be carried in what we 1911 shooters call condition 1. When depressing the safety the shooter has to make sure they don’t depress it to hard or they will de-cock the pistol.

DSC_0300

The barrel is hammer forged with a polished feed ramp. The extractor is external with a loaded chamber indicator.

A polymer-framed pistol, which is shot extensively, can actually wear out the steel frame rails. One good feature is these rails can be replaced if they do become too worn. Two grip inserts are supplied in the case so the owner can tailor the grip to their preference. With the smaller grip insert the grip amazingly comes very close to that of a Browning Hi-Power. This means it’s one nice grip that points naturally and is very comfortable. The textured grip surface also helps when the shooters hands are damp.

DSC_0298

How does it shoot:

The answer to this is very well indeed. I carried this FN in condition 1 which gave me excellent results on the range. Ten-yard groups were right at 2 inches on average with 25-yard groups at 3 ½ inches on average. Not bad for a duty pistol.

I found the FN to be very comfortable to shoot with fairly mild recoil. I imagine this has something to with the grip angle and possibly with the barrel lockup time.

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed testing the FNX45. As I said earlier it’s comfortable to shoot. Accuracy was good. Grip texture and size as well as grip angle helped me to shoot it quickly and efficiently.

One important consideration is size. This is a true duty pistol not a CCW piece. It’s a pistol meant for duty use for law enforcement as well as military use. The civilian will find it a great pistol for home defense with that 15 round capacity of .45 acp. If you can’t stop an intruder with that many rounds of 45 you’re in trouble! Also, if you reside in an open carry state it will fit the bill nicely.

All of the pistols in the FNX line are priced competitively with Glock and other polymer pistols. It’s certainly a newer design with a good number of additional useful features lacking on many pistols of the type.

For this price, features, magazine capacity and extra mags I look at it as a great buy. I recommend anyone in the market for a polymer type pistol consider the FNX45.

Hourly workers at the federally owned Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence have been given voluntary layoff offers as part of a plan to reduce the workforce of 2,600.

The cutbacks result mainly from modernization efforts during the last eight years, according to Bryan Kidder, a spokesman for Alliant Techsystems, which operates the facility for the U.S. Army.

He also attributed the cutbacks to “recent drawdowns in military actions.

DeSantis Ammo Nemesis

by Richard Johnson
desantis ammo nemesis

DeSantis Gunhide announced an addition to their Nemesis line of pocket holsters:  the Ammo Nemesis.  The new holster retains much of the same styling, look and feel of the original Nemesis, but with an added ammo pocket.

Many people who carry a snub nose revolver will also carry a strip of spare ammo on a Speed Strips or QuickStrips.  These strips keep the ammo from rolling loose in the pocket.  The Ammo Nemesis has a small pocket on the “tail” of the holster where that stip of ammunition can be held.

The holster is made of synthetic materials.  The holster’s tail and the rubber-like outer surface help keep the holster in the pocket during a draw.  MSRP is $24.99.
